Sculpt your own Jack-o'-Lantern
Welcome to THE TENth Sculpting Challenge. Whether you're new to sculpting, to the Threedy forums, or you're a seasoned veteran, come and join in on the Sculpting madness – there's plenty of fun and learning to be had by all!
http://www.3dtotal.com/images/pumpkinimage3.jpg
The Rules:
1. The competition will run until midnight on Halloween (GMT); the time between now and then will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries – at which point the next competition will start.
2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition, from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic. This week's base mesh has been provided by Richard Tilbury (in-house at 3DTotal) and adapted by a ZBrush artist to include a hollow pumpkin shape with a lid. You must work only with the base mesh provided and you must not add any additional base meshes or objects. We simply want you to use your imagination and see what you can come up with from this simple base mesh!
3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating – we are relying on your honesty here!
4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.
5. As the base meshes show, the sculpt this time starts from a simple sphere. Do not add any additional objects, subtools or base meshes. We basically want to see what you can do from just this simple base mesh!
6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpt you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognisable and on topic.
7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc., but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "Manage Attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
8. You can create multiple sculpts, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.
9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Submissions thread, once it has been set up later on in the Challenge.
These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!
We've attached the supplied base meshes at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide!
Prize:
This month's prizes I have tried to keep Halloween related! Wordware Publishing, Inc. are kindly sponsoring this challenge with three copies - one each for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place - of Wayne Robson's latest title, Essential ZBrush (http://www.wordware.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=wwpub&Product_Code=1598220594). On top of this, I have three copies of Tofu The Vegan Zombie: Zombie Dearest (http://www.tofutheveganzombie.com) for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places - one each. And as a special present for the person who comes in 1st place, I am going to also send them 1 copy of Total Textures DVD: Volume 11 - Alien Organic (http://shop.3dtotal.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=195&osCsid=ad50dc70e6e0693e62e002ffb59068ae). So no tricks, just treats for the sculptors who come in the top 3. And don't forget the status that comes along with a 1st place Speed Sculpting Winner is always pretty cool!
The Brief:
Time limit: 4 hours
Start Date: 21st October, 18:00 GMT+0
Deadline: 30th October, 11:59 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/))
Subject: Sculpt your own Jack-o’-Lantern!
Trick or treat!
With Halloween fast approaching we thought it was about time we got our sculpting tools stuck into something a little festive for this time of year, and what’s more festive than carving a pumpkin on Halloween to make your very own jack-o’-lantern to scare the kids as they come greedily knocking for treats?
Well, carving a Jack-o-lantern couldn’t be more perfectly suited to a great Speed Sculpting Challenge, so sculpting tools at the ready – let’s get carving!
It’s going to be a short challenge this time – all in the name of Halloween. So no time to waste; let’s see what you can do in just the 9 remaining days till All Hallows Eve!
But before we get carried away, let’s have a think about where we should take our sculpts … With a challenge as simple as this, you can imagine that we’re going to be looking for something a little special, something a bit unique and that pushes the limits of sculpting a traditional jack-o’-lantern. There’s no room here for run-of-the-mill pumpkin sculpts – we want something a bit more exciting! And we’re talking Halloween remember, so we’re thinking ghouls and ghosties, witches and demons – that kind of thing! And have a think about what jack-o’-lanterns represent, too! Let’s see what good ol’ Wiki has to say about Mr. Jack-o’-lantern:
A jack-o'-lantern (sometimes also spelled Jack O'Lantern) is typically a carved pumpkin. It is associated chiefly with the holiday Halloween, and was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs, called ignis fatuus or jack-o'-lantern. In a jack-o'-lantern, typically the top is cut off, and the inside flesh then scooped out; an image, usually a monstrous face, is carved onto the outside surface, and the lid replaced. At night a light (commonly a candle) is placed inside to illuminate the effect. The term is not particularly common outside North America, although the practice of carving lanterns for Halloween is.
Exactly, thanks Wiki! So we’re looking for monstrous faces carved into weird and wonderful pumpkins. Use your imagination! Everyone’s tried sculpting a pumpkin for Halloween once in their life – and made a right royal mess at the same time, I should imagine. There are so many limits when sculpting a fleshy pumpkin with a knife and gutting it with a spoon, so take the advantage here with your ZBrush/Mudbox sculpting tools and create something truly unique (whilst not deviating from the subject of course).
As always, time is of the essence – speed is the nature of this game, after all! You’ve got just 9 days (but that’s plenty of time) to get yourselves carving your pumpkins! The time limit for this speed sculpting challenge is 4 hours. You can of course spend some time beforehand on your research – we’re just limiting your sculpting time, not your brain food. We don’t limit the number of sculpts you create for any challenge, but we do say you can only submit one for the final submissions.
Great, so we’ve got our subject – tick! We’ve got our sculpting software – tick! So get sculpting! And don’t be shy, go for 1st place – why not? Have a look through previous challenges to see the quality of the past winners and take some inspiration from there for your own sculpt. The base mesh is simple and so is the idea, but don’t take that to mean your interpretation has to be simple – your imagination is the limit!
Happy Halloween everyone!
The Mesh:
Your base mesh is attached to this post - simply click on the attachment at the end of this post, save the file and you're on your way!
The base mesh was created by Richard Tilbury (in-house at 3DTotal) and adapted by a ZBrush artist to include a hollow pumpkin shape with a lid, from which to sculpt your pumpkin and get carving. You just need to take the .obj file into your ZBrush or Mudbox scene, and get started!
Please also note that you mustn't add any more objects! Use only what has been provided and nothing more!! This is the challenge after all!
Any problems, gimme a shout - lynette@3dtotal.com
Here's your .obj file - download it and get going! >>>>

thanks for kicking things off with a great start, 3dhorus!
what are everyone's thoughts on the deadline? do you feel you need longer? i'm considering extending the deadline till 5/Nov/08 (Bonfire Night), depending on how things go and what you guys think. so let me know if you think that sounds good, or if you'd prefer to stick to the Halloween deadline

I hope I can make something for this one. The pumpkin below was made in an hour(and it looks like one made in an hour).

love the theme for this one!!! if I dont participate in this one I will shoot myself!!!!! I think we should stick to the halloween deadline, just because its jack-o-lanterns and it feels approriate for it to end in halloween, but on the other hand more poeple will probably participate if it goes on till the 5th, which would be cool 2, so haha not sure at the end hahahaha:dunno: haha not much help:wall:

great work everyone, i'm glad you're all getting stuck in! i'm even tempted to have a go myself - you guys are making it look like so much fun! :D hope to see more WIPs soon - keep 'em coming! :)
as for the deadline, I'm going to leave it set for Halloween as I think that's just rather cool. if for any reason it is felt that the deadline should be extended later on, I'll consider it next week and keep you guys updated. but for the meantime, keep working to Halloween as your deadline - not alot of time for this challenge, so don't leave it till tomorrow - sculpt now! :)

wow, nice stuff people, puts my work to shame... any way, i saw this post and decided to have a go and sign up to the forums. So i have spent about 2 hours on my model, its my first proper sculpt in blender(we can use program other than Zbrush and mud-box, right?) apart from the odd tutorial or 2. Enough ramblings, here's my pic(not great, but something)

Welcome to the forums, MadComputerUser!
This challenge is all about sculpting, so if you can sculpt in Blender (can you...? not sure - not too familiar with this software!) then all is OK. the easiest thing is if you tell us how you modelled your pumpkin and we can then say whether it's OK or not :)

23-10-2008, 08:42 PM
thanks, yes, blender has a quite powerful sculpt tool, with same tools Zbrush and mudbox have, move, magnify, textured brush(like Zbrushes alpha), draw, etc. So all i did was import the .obj into blender, apply multires, and start sculpting like in any other tool, sculpt, add detail level, sculpt etc.

Hey lynette, I know that, but I just auto groups - group split the base mesh that you gave me.
the top of the pumpkin is like another object on the .obj, I just separated them.
We have done this in all sculpting challenges, but if in this one its not allowed, there is no problem.
I'm having fun making this =D

im pretty sure we are NOT allowed other objects, i.e, the knife. Correct me if im wrong
Lynette-3dt
25-10-2008, 09:28 PM
hey guys,
ok, so i wrote a whole speech about the use of the lid object and then 3dhorus went and posted his funky sculpt in which the lid incorporates a knife - which has obviously been sculpted in place of a stem. i have had a think about this subject and i think 3dhorus has made great use of the lid concept, and i feel that it is still in keeping with the brief.
however, i don't want the lid of the .obj to be taken as a separate object and sculpted into something that is not reminiscent of a pumpkin lid (sorry, longhi :(). the lid can be incorporated in another way, i.e. on a different part of the pumpkin, such as used in place of a nose or placed inside the pumpkin - as long as it keeps its lid origin/form, but i do not believe it is fair to take the lid of the pumpkin .obj and turn it into something that is not essentially acting as a lid, or of lid form but used elsewhere on the pumpkin. does everyone agree that this is fair?
in previous challenges, we have not allowed the use of eye objects to be used as alternative objects, such as to form an item of clothing (for example), and so i believe it is fair to stick to this same motto here and ask that the lid is treated as a lid. the .obj gives you a clear pumpkin and a lid. 3dhorus's use of the lid, although it incorporates a knife, is still effectively a lid - this is fine. but i can't allow the use of the lid to be turned into a non-lid like object, such as a man.
everyone ok with this? let me know what you think - i'm all thinked out!
3dhorus

im pretty sure we are NOT allowed other objects, i.e, the knife. Correct me if im wrong
from the looks of it, the knife seems to have been sculpted from the stem of the lid. it doesn't look like a separate object has been added. can you confirm this for us, 3dhorus?
3dhorus
25-10-2008, 09:41 PM
Yes Lynette-3dt ... but i can do the changes if you want or is no right .
Sorry for the English ... i need the help of Google Translator .
Lynette-3dt
25-10-2008, 09:47 PM
hey 3dhorus,
i personally believe that your knife is an extension of the stem. i think madcomputeruser was worried that you'd added another object to the scene, but i can see that you've used the stem of the lid to form the knife - i believe this is OK.
i'm off to bed in a mo as it's been a long week and i have episodes of 24 to watch, so if anyone has any questions about any of what's been said this evening then i'll check in tomorrow. in the meantime, happy sculpting, people! :D

wow, you guys are great! am i to understand that you like challenges when they're kept simple like this? or do you equally enjoy more challenging sculpts, such as full characters? i'm just wondering about this as you all seem to have really enjoyed this one, and if we know what you like it will help us to make better challenges in the future :)
here's your final submissions thread: http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=62664
good luck everyone!

Well I have participated in a handful of these challenges, and I think the best bet is to stick with more simple challenges. Maybe slightly more difficult than a pumpkin, but not quite a complete bust.
Stick with that area for the most part, as the quicker challenges allow me to have time for some of my own work. But every two or three challenges, raise the stakes and have a more complex challenge with a little better prizes. Maybe even give the challenges a 'level' rating for difficulty?
I would also say that everyone seems to enjoy the challenges that are 'loose'... like the nightmare statue, the egg, and the pirate challenges.

Personnaly i'm a new comer but i was keeping an eye on your sculpt challenge from some months ago. And now i'm really motivated to participate to the more i can.
I love the halloween theme I think it's my favorite theme, and it's true that making a pumpkin is funny you can have a lot of fun with a simple form.
But personnaly i think i will enjoy some "harder" subject too like the "manimal theme" you did some time ago.
Simple or harder, i think both are cool, the most important for me is the subject himself.
What i love the most in your challenge is the time limit, it motivate me a lot! You have to work really quickly and so let your creation speak, it's cool!
And the other advantage is that it don't take you 2 month to finish it, you take one or more nights and that's it you had fun and feed your creation appetit.
Hope my english is understanding.
And hope my opinion help you.
cheers :)
Edit: I'm agree with Slangford, but i don't understand your last sentences when you say "challenges that are loose" sorry my english is limited, what does it mean?
slangford

JulienN is right, Subject is really the most important factor.
And by 'loose', I mean challenges that are flexible, where you have more options

thanks slangford and julienN - your comments have been noted ;) i like the idea of giving them a difficulty rating, but then it may put some people off from having a go - not sure. it's all about the taking part at the end of the day! but yeah, the idea of more open topics are cool, although is that because they're less of a challenge? i guess they allow for more creativity! we'll definitely keep thinking about the prizes; i certainly think the harder challenged require the better prizes - especially because you'll need more incentive to take time out for those ones.
any suggestions for future challenge topics?
by the way, i received the Essential ZBrush books this morning - they look fab!! I'm trying with all my might not to get fingerprints on the lovely, pristine books to keep them all lovely for the winners of this challenge. be sure to submit your work in the Final Submissions thread for your chance to win one of those! :D

I spent 25 minutes on tweaking a material to look pumpkin-ish and I also sculpted the upper part. It`s 2 hours and 20 minutes or so until now so I still have time, maybe I`ll subdivide some parts further and add more details.
Thanks for the appreciation, bgen, siah and Cederstrom.

2h and 30 minutes till now, but I think this is almost finished
2 hrs i think, couldn't be bother to do more. :p
btw. i have noticed, some people render out there pumpkin or @ least it seems to me that way....
if so i quote rule 6. "No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpt you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognisable and on topic."

bgen, about which images you think are rendered?
silvaticus
28-10-2008, 06:13 AM
Just in case you mean mine, it`s only preview render (which is on by default in ZBrush), some tweaking on matcaps and color fill. No texture, no polypaint, no render. I hope that`s not against the rules.
As for Lynette`s question about the challenges, I`m okay with anything that comes up and I gladly join when I have time. I have a small problem with the base meshes, I prefer my crappy models started from scratch for two reasons: it`s a better exercise and I know from start how to organize them for the needed result. So I would prefer a simple polysphere with no extra stuff.

Hi silvaticus, thanks for your comments about the base meshes! Does everyone else think that would be best for future challenges - a very simple sphere, cube, etc.? I suppose the reason we give more defined meshes is because we give you such short time limits to do the work. but sure, it would certainly be easier for us to give more simple base meshes for future challenges - everyone agree?

if you start with a basic cube.....than would that give the artist who allready know how to sculpt a unfair atvantage? (people might not enter at all if they have no idea where to start.
oh and i posted a final which was not in this thread as wip is that okay?....did the whole thing in one sitting so there isn't much "WIP" going on.
before i forget...some one said bigger prizes...if so me thinks "win 3 times in a row and you have to sit one out" hehehehe okay send in the hate mail

I understand what silvaticus is talking about with simple mesh, the mesh of the magical staff was like that, one rectangle and one cube and it was cool to work on.
But in another side i enjoyed the base mesh of the pumpkin, it helped me a lot for the start, and i think a win a lot of time with this base mesh, i'm not totaly familiar with zbrush that's probably the reason.
I can't make a choice for this question sorry.

I really prefere base meshes like a cube, but dependings the theme.
I prefer organics, like monsters, humans, angels and so on. so that 3dtotal base mesh was great too
I hope we could have more speeds, like when we got 1 per 2 weeks.
Thanks
slangford

From my experience, I find the simple meshes allow for a lot more freedom and creativity. Now I understand a lot of the beginners might find the simple mesh a little intimidating, but I think that they will learn more if the beginning stages of the sculpting process are not 'skipped' for them. So what might be a good compromise is if the 'easier' challenges have a more defined mesh, and the 'upper level' challenges are from a simple mesh. All of this of course depends on the subject, as some could actually need a better mesh than a sphere. :D
All in all, I say look at the previous competitions. All have been successful (and fun) in one way or another. Even with different timelines and meshes, everyone enjoyed each one of them. I really don't think one plan is going to work for every challenge. It will become too structured and people will probably get a little tired. I say just "go-with-the-flow".
Start with the subject....
is it better for a harder/longer or easier/shorter challenge?
is it focused enough (like a bust) for a custom mesh?
would sub-tools be necessary or beneficial?
ok... I've said enough. Sorry for the long post. :haha:

threre's been a cube challenge before, and i must say it was fun and challenging, which everybody likes and good for sharpening sculpt skills..
i'm not yet a pro and i must say that i am still a beginner till these days but it really thought me something..newbies should try it..
my opinion..
for me,personally,i think this challenge isn't necessary about grabbing the price only..to most people,it's about practice for improvement and having fun with sculpting..(like someone used to say) aite?

i like it with base meshes resembling the shape, as i am not a very good sculpter, so id end up with something remotely looking like slosh, i believe other under-experienced sculptors would feel the same, and so probably not enter

Hey everyone..I entered my submission too already. Pretty sweet pumpkins.
On the subject of base mesh or a cube. Using a cube or what ever is not so bad. But since I'm still learning...The base meshes helped me out on getting a start. I've only entered the Pirate speed challenge. But it was fun. And this was a cool challenge. I guess I've always thought it was cool that someone can do so much with a simple base mesh.

Hi guys!
This is another version of my Jack-o'-lantern, I call him of Jack-INSIDE-lantern.
Jack-inside-lantern was my first idea for the challenge, but I knew that I never could finish it in time. I spent around 3h45 to complete the entire pumpkin :wall:
I carve Jack's from original base mesh. I had a saved version of pumpkin before completing the top, the Jack "" is exactly this part. So did not use other mesh or subtools.
I made several polygroups to keep my work organized.
I used the Sathe's Mat (thanks man)
These pictures are my contribution to the challenge.
