View Full Version : THE Sculpting Challenge 011: Pleasure & Pain

Welcome to THE ELEVENth Sculpting Challenge. Whether you're new to sculpting, to the Threedy forums, or you're a seasoned veteran, come and join in on the Sculpting madness – there's plenty of fun and learning to be had by all!

http://209.85.55.5/test_server/tac/upload/image/ssc011cover.jpg

The Rules:
1. This competition will last 12 days, which will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries – at which point the next competition will start.

2. TThe moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition, from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic. You must work only with the base meshes provided and must not add any additional base meshes or Subtools! We simply want you to use your imagination and see what you can come up with from this simple base mesh!

3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating – we are relying on your honesty here!

4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.

5. As the base mesh shows, the sculpt this time starts from a simple sphere. Do not add any additional objects, subtools or base meshes. We basically want to see what you can do from just this simple base mesh!

6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpt you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognisable and on topic.

7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc., but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "Manage Attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

8. You can create multiple sculpts, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.

9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Submissions thread, once it has been set up later on in the Challenge.

These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!

We've attached the supplied base mesh at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide!

Subject: Pleasure & Pain

Ouch!

Ever heard of Murphy's Law? Basically, it states if anything can go wrong, it will. Usually right after something really cool happened, here comes Murphy's Law and screws it up. As such, where there's pleasure, immediately comes pain. The theme is to either sculpt an agonizing expression following something pleasurable, or a pleasured expression prior to something painful happening.

Wonderful example from Wikipedia:
You're starving, and you've just finished creating a delicious sandwich. You're going to eat that amazing tantalizing sandwich. Pleasure. Whoops! It fell on the dirty floor, face down. Pain. Think of your facial expression before, or after your feast has fallen to its doom.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/08/LA_LEY_DE_MURPHY.jpg/794px-LA_LEY_DE_MURPHY.jpg

Another fine example:
See this guy? Yeah, that's going to hurt. Pain. But just a second ago, he was happily strolling back home, glad to be out of the office and off to a cozy warm evening with the wife. Pleasure. Think of his facial expression either before, or after this Murphious event.

http://www.lifeisajoke.com/Pictures/a_moment_before_accident.jpg

With a spherical base mesh, all we want from you is a head. No bust, or body sculpt. It can be a realistic head (like in the challenge poster), it can be cartoonish or heavily stylized - it does not matter as long as it clearly depicts an expression of pain or pleasure. The ability/skill/talent/luck to create a believable facial expression of pleasure or pain will be crucial.

Attention!

You must also provide a short backstory as to what is going on or will happen to your character. Why is he/she happy? But what disaster will happen to him/her right after? Or why is he/she in pain? But what happy moment did this awful calamity just destroy?

The Mesh:
Your base mesh is attached to this post - simply click on the attachment at the end of this post, save the file and you're on your way! Open up your favourite sculpting software, import the .obj file, and remember that your imagination (and in this challenge's case, perhaps your own experience of Murphy's law) is the only limit! Oh, that and those pesky four hours. :wall:

Please also note that you mustn't add any more objects! Use only what has been provided and nothing more!! This is the challenge after all!

Me and the mods will be hovering around the challenge and make sure things go smooth, so if you've got any questions, by all means ask away!

Here's your .obj file - download it and get going! >>>>

Excellent, dpunisher! Funny story and that expression is spot on. With 30 minutes left, maybe you could take a look at that ear lobe, I think it's a bit squareish, unless you wanted it to be on the cartoonish side.

Androit, that's a good start to an expression. I'm curious what happened or will happen to that guy.

I'm really looking forward to more entries, and don't forget your short backstory for them!

hi guys,

This is my first post on the forums so hopefully i will not do anything wrong :)

I dont have much time to work on things right now so this is just a quick one. 30min in total.

Story: this little fellow has just seen something he wants to play with high up on the tabletop and has had the most fantastic idea that if he pulls on the tablecloth the object of his desire will fall off and land perfectly in front of him, BUT of course we all know where its really going to land :) (Yes, on his head)

Im going to try and do a a few more of these as its great practice, would love to hear any feedback you all have.

cant wait to see some of your sculps.

Hello Darkmonk, welcome to the Sculpting Challenge!

That's a cool backstory for your sculpt, and you've done a good amount of detailing and expression in 30 minutes, but it could still use a bit more refinement. Final touches. :)

hi,

Freespace-3DT: hi, thanks for welcoming me :) Im going to try a couple of different models before the weekend and then hopefully when i can get some more time i will work one of them up to a more detailed sculpt, im still deciding if i want to do a realistic baby or keep the cartoon style.

Makaveli: thats the exact image i had in my head when i made this lol, originally i wanted to make a realistic baby but i dont have much time at night to work on things so when i thought cartoon baby JackJack was the first thing that came to mind.

hi guys,

here is another quick sculpt, wanted to try a more complex overall shape this time, I dont have a story for this one but im not using it as my final model.

i think im going to to back to the baby model for my next sculpt, i will either add more datail to the one that looks like jackjack or try and get enough time to sit and model a more realistic baby face.

this model took 45min.

DELTATHUND3R: awsome sculpt so far, love the detail around the eyes, cant wait to see what you do with your final hour of sculpting

dPunisher: great story behind your sculpt, im laughing just thinking about how that would look in real life, and my image of how it looks in my head is just like your model lol.

Adroit.jrk: loving your model, the hair on the beard is nicely sculpted, do you have a story behind whats caused this pain ?

keep up the good work guys, cant wait to see more.

FreeSpace_3dt first thanks, and I forgot the background story.ok here is the background story for my model.

3h50m;
Background story :
Meet the harlequin of pain and pleasure. Born through pain, raised with the hope that the richness of

the world will bring him the long sought after happiness, challenged by life to accept suffering, he

twists and turns at the mercy of his own fate. Sometimes the pain is too great for him, sometimes the

happines brings him tears of joy, and knowing this in his heart he keeps each half of his face ready

to embrace whatever the moment brings him. And in everyone of us, there is a part of him.

Hi,

finally I made it to create my first posting on this board so actually I'd like to participate...

I'm looking forward to a great competition, guys and gals ;) .

Freespace-3DT
21-11-2008, 03:06 PM
xsto101: Great so far, might want to watch the mouth a bit, as it seems to me it's too wide. Each half of the face could use a bit more wrinkles to make the expression more powerful ( both pleasure and pain ). Right now, you're more on happy/sad, but what I'd like from you is pleasure/pain. :D

JHarford: Awww, come on Joe!

Sadone: Welcome to the forum! Good start to the competition, and yes, WIP images are actually encouraged. Good luck!

Lynette: Well, Bryzol put it quite accurately, that no, you cannot retopologize or extract from the given basemesh. It's part of the challenge! And I see xsto is doing a good job with the mesh.

hello,
Here is my WIP.

Here is the little story:
A skull which is trying to revive itself into a person. The thing here is.....the skull is pleased to revive itself n live life........but the person that it is reviving into is not at all happy and is in pain thinking about the cruel n hard things he might have to face in life if he is fully revived.

This is 45 min of sculpting,i dont know whether i can finish this in 4 hrs bcoz i have to do lots of sculpting if i want to bring that fleshy and boney feel.
But i will try.

kogen
21-11-2008, 07:35 PM
Interesting story, rraj. I think it's bit hard for that guy, cause he already has a skull, so I guess it's really hard to depict this transition between that two skulls... very cool.

I continued sculpting and I think I need to tweak some more things like eyes, maybe work on the eyebrows again... still got 1:10 hour.

darkmonk
21-11-2008, 07:46 PM
hi guys,

loving all the sculpts so far.

I managed to get bit bit more time today to work on my more realistic version, this is 1hour 30min of sculpt. need to refine the details more and i might also tweak the expression a little.

would love to hear any comments on what you think might need adjusted.

kogen
21-11-2008, 08:05 PM
Hei darkmonk,

I like this version of the baby more than the previous one.
The eye/nose region look very good, but the mouth region could use some additional work.
I guess the lips are a way too thin plus the forms are too hard.
In a baby's face there are normally very soft forms blending into eachother. Maybe give the lower lip some more volume. Oh, and I guess some tweaking in the area of the mouth corners would be fine.

Medusa
21-11-2008, 08:27 PM

DELTATHUND3R
21-11-2008, 09:31 PM
The pleasures of life and the pain of death.
17th century priest Giovanni cantonias while standing at the alter looking out the stained glass windows. So overwhelmed with his love of his lord and his king his life seems too be in bliss. But with a quiet wisper in his ear he is thrown into deep pain in the news his king his great king is dead.

21-11-2008, 09:42 PM
Hei Medusa,

errr... why do you think it's a "he"? Actually it's a "she". I guess we need to talk about a couple of things I should change to make her more girlish... but don't say: "Make her hair longer!" :P
The back story is still there, but I want to reveal it later. It is something about a tiny thing with big influence :)

This is Bob, Bob lives in the world of Murphy and thus is constantly experiencing pleasure, followed immediatly by pain followed again by pleasure etc...
This is bob finaly cracking under the stress of the constant tug of war between the two experiences/emotions. Notice how even though he is smilling, he looks to be in pain.

Hello Guys !!!

I tried to write the most correct way for everyone to understand ... sorry for Bad English and Here goes the Story ...

LOBOTOMY

A SerialKiller Known only as " Z " by having this letter carved on his forehead, earned PLEASURE compulsive with the PAIN and SUFFERING of his victims that he called " Mesh dolls ".

For a neglect in its last act, his main tool called for it of " Slash-01 " , was found next to his newest victim in a Bustling International Forum , being evident the connection of the tool with the " Z-Sculptor " , as such Monster its mark left .

These Series of Events became known as the " 4 Hours of Hell on Earth ".

After caught and brought to trial, his Sentence in the Electric Chair would be right if it were not for a small segment of the Scientific Community .

Lobotomy was said ...

and as Irony of Fate, the tool used by the Neurosurgeon was the feared “ Slash-01 ” .

Perhaps a little of the Law of Murphy , but with certainty the Old Law of Talião , contained in the Code of Hamurabi … Eye for Eye , Tooth for Tooth , If makes necessary .

I have been fan from 3d total from a long time, and this time I really want to get in to this challenge.

But I have a few questions that are like an impediment for me to start to work:

1.- How you will know that we just spend 4 hours of our time in the sculpt?
2.- Wi will send the .obj file of our final work to the administrator?
3.- About the rigging. The transpose tool of Zbrush is not considerated a rig method right?

Just answer me this question please, and I think I can accept the challenge :)

2.- Wi will send the .obj file of our final work to the administrator?
3.- About the rigging. The transpose tool of Zbrush is not considerated a rig method right?

read the rules on the first page :
1 >> There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating – we are relying on your honesty here!

2>> Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Submissions thread, once it has been set up later on in the Challenge.

3>>I don't know the answer =D

Hey guys,

it's great how the challenge turned out. I'm very impressed by bryzol who is already ready... :) The details are quite cool (the sculpting as well). But also the other guys are doing a great job.

Yesterday I've shown you the "happy" version of my Satyr girl so let's continue with the sad version now. Here is the story:

It was one of those days in spring when young satyrs make plans to meet each other... let's call it: Flirting and dating.
However our girl was in the happy position to have a date with the best looking satyr boy in the whole Fantasy realm. It's not necessary to say that she wanted their first date to be the start for a glittering future.
So she dyed her hair and dressed up pretty nice. In the afternoon she took the way through the forest to meet that guy. Unfortunately a couple of humans were chasing squirrels (yes they need them to pin the tails on their hats). In a wink of an eye those crazy blokes chased down the way right next to her jumping into puddles and spattering mud on her from tip to toe. Her hairdo was a mess, her former goof mood was splashed away and anger started to spread. Worst of all she had no chance to note the number plate to sue that guys, so she ran home crying.
Stinking humans ;)

Thanks Frebel.

In fact, I read all the rules before to ask... but, I was wondering if the 3d total administrator have alternative method to know if anyone is cheatting, you know... for be sure that the people that wins really deserve the prices.

What is the end date of this challenge? (in the first post I just read "This Competition will last 12 days").

Regards!

darkmonk: The pain version is awesome!

mre: I'm sorry but in this comp we only want a head sculpt. No bust, or body sculpt. - As stated in the rules. I like the head of your character, it looks loony cartoony.

bryzol: Excellent attention to detail, as always a pleasure to see your work.

Sadone: Love the backstory and I love the sculpt. It's got great character, and that's just what I was looking for with this challenge.

efrenstudios: Welcome to the Threedy forums! As stated in the initial post, the deadline is the 1st of December. Please read the post carefuly for all rules and theme related info, then if you have more questions, feel free to post them. Looking forward to seeing your sculpt and backstory for this challenge!

hey hey!

It seems everything I post on these forums has somthing to do with Valve Games.....Oh well:dance:

Anyways, my submission is an Engineer from Team Fortress 2.

It is the joy of building something of cunning ingenuity coupled with the pain of having it all maliciously torn down.

SPYS SAPPIN MY SENTRY!!

Anyways, I'm still new to Zbrush, and I took a lot of time fighting with the helmet edges, trying to make them look uniform, i had a lot of trouble odviously, any crits on what i could've done to make them better would help!

Some insanely nice work on these forums, I hope I'll have time for another submission.

Thanks Freespace 3DT, there's still some time left so maybe I could add or change something, let's see.

Woha, N's R this looks great. Looks like you captured his expression directly from life.

I was thinking about your problem Thrillhouse 900, and I guess you could try to mask the edge and then pull it out by the inflate-option in the deformation palette. This will push the edge out uniformly. For the fine tuning you could use the clay brush to fill gaps.

hi guys,

ok, ive made some very small adjustments to the babyface to define some details, Im not sure what else to add or change so would love to here from you guys about anything you think looks wrong or could do with being added.
if there is nothing more i can do this will more than likely be my final entry and ill post it in the correct place.

Ive also added a very quick render but i know the final entry needs to be a screegrab :)

the material in the render is a composite of a couple of materials, one of them is the antropus skin shader by k. costa

As usual amazing sculpt from skull monster.

My 3 hrs 15 min is over, now i have to blend some muscles and a little work on the jaw and teeth also.

Here is a story again-
A skull which is trying to revive itself into a person. The thing here is.....the skull is pleased to revive itself, but the person that it is reviving into is not at all happy and is in pain thinking about the cruel n hard things he might have to face in life if he is fully revived.

Thrillhouse: Haha, that's a funny idea, and with more refinement to detail ( I'm mostly talking about the too visible subdivision level ) it should look really good. You've done a cool job mixing organic with inorganic, and slightly more wrinkles in good places ( check out N's R's work for a good example ) will usually increase the impact of an expression.

N's R: Looks almost like a real man. That's some skill. The expression of disgust really sells it. Excellent.

darkmonk: Yeah, there's some subtle details in there that really give it that finishing touch.

skulll_monster: So far it looks spot-on. Now I'm waiting for his expression, because currently that old guy looks bored.

rraj: Superb work! Great concept and you managed to get it looking really expressive and detailed in quite a short amount of time. Even the skeleton looks happy. :)

efrenstudios: Good luck, then!

DELTATHUND3R: I would crit your anatomy a bit in there, mostly the lips ( which could be bulged up more ) and the neck muscles. I recommend brushing up on some anatomy ( this site is great: http://www.reybustos.com/03ra/ra.html ), it will really help you define your characters.

ibrahim: I guess he's being punched or slapped for something? Looking forward to seeing more from this, it can look really cool when finished.

mre: Great, that's what I'm talking about. Now you've got your character's head sculpted ( and quite nicely ), it's time for an expression. Don't forget your backstory ( what happened to him to make him happy? Or what WILL happen to him to make him be in pain )

It's really cool to see so many creative entries. Keep it up everybody, there's still a week to go!

Sadone -thanks for some good words. I have to admit that I like your satyr girl very much too. Nice face expression.
Freespace-3DT - thanks man! Realy nice to read something like this :)
N's R - great job, realy great detail and expression in such short among of time :)
skulll_monster - I can't wait to see more.
rraj - nice!
DELTATHUND3R - I agree with Freespace that you could work a bit more about face anatomy, and it will be great.
ibrahim_gabr -Thanks for kind words. I've allready submited my final entry so I can't add any more detail, and I rather wonted to show pleasure from taking pain so I think I whouldn't add tears anyway. I am waiting to see more detail in your sculpt.

Hi Everyone,

I'm so glad to see all of you in this challenge :haha:
I had a huge problem with the Internet connection which has hold me back from participating; however, thank God this challenge is limited to a certain time!

What I like the most in this challenge is the originality of work! Most works are original and have nothing to do with reproducing!

Anyhow,
dPunisher: That’s why I hate Ice-cream!
Adroit.jrk: Something is stuck in my throat :xx:
darkmonk: Welcome abroad :haha:
DELTATHUND3R: You make me cry
frebel: Welcome abroad :haha:
pinkio75: :haha: I love it
silvaticus: Very inspiring :haha:
Sadone: Great Idea
ibrahim_gaber: I will share the same idea with you, but in different style and situation ;P
3dhorus: Crazy ideas as usual :lurve:

And for the rest, who I didn't mention, accept my apology, but great work all participants!

Now for my story:
It will be about a lazy worker who will take a punch in his head for being late to work from his boss!
The style is going to be cartoonish.
I hope you will like it guys :haha:

I’ll see you when I’m done with something

Nice challenge again and many good works. I think that some are pretty far from the theme though. Good sculpts but not fitting the subject. Would you feel like laughing to a joke after your lips were sewed? Where`s the pleasure part when your son dies or you get stabbed?

Thanks for the comments on my post.

This is my final entry.

I forgot, I was always curious about how many polys some of the sculpts have. In this challenge I`d like to know about the models of kazmamurat, eiadahnim, mafida.
And another one: where are all the cool Mudbox sculpts, with the huge hype around it I have only seen a couple of images with a crappy DOF and the old images in their gallery. Nothing here as far as I know.

I think that i have interpreted the wrong way the theme of the challenge and very well observed silvaticus you is right, i understand that a make a sculpt using one of two subjects and not something that was ambiguous, because of this my sculpt is linked only with pain , holy crap my lack of attention x.x

Bgen i have once similar accident like Frank only worse because without helmet;P

And i made a second one last night:
Poor guy eat a cake(pleasure) and then his tooth started to hurt:cry:

And here we come to the end of this challenge. I was really glad to see so many entries, and even the return of some of our hardcore sculpters. :D

Allright, did everybody submit their entry in the Final Submission thread? I'm keeping it open a couple more hours, and then the voting begins.

Some great works here.
I don't see a lot of exagerated expression, too bad.
I wanted to vote because some of your models deserved lot of votes, but i can't because i have not enough messages.
I'm a little sad because i wanted participate but no time for. Next time.

Congrats to all the particpants, see you next challenge. :)
