Speed Painting Challenge no. 84
Topic: Robots
Idea: These can be concept sketches or fully finished renders, your robot can be as tiny as a coin or as large as a building. Can be made to help, or built to destroy. Could be from the future, or from the past. The cool part is, it’s up to you.
Deadline: 11:59 pm (GMT) Sunday December 7th (use the time zone thread to make sure your done in time)
Prizes: (must be at least 6 entries)
Winner gets to choose one of the following options:
- 6-month subscription to the 2DCreative magazine
- 6-month subscription to the 3DCreative magazine
Rules:
-Any medium is allowed, as long as it can be put into digital form - scanned, photographed, etc.
- Since it's a speed painting, it should be finished in the smallest amount of time possible, but if you paint a whole day, you won't get disqualified . But for example, 4 days is too much
- IF YOU PAINT MULTIPLE ENTRIES, YOU NEED TO STATE BEFORE THE DEADLINE WHICH ONE YOU LIKE THE BEST. IF NOT – I’LL DO IT FOR YOU
- References can be used - 3D or photograph, BUT you can't paint over them. It has to be your own painting.
- Custom brushes can be used, but to some extent - they can't be pre-made parts of the future painting, like a whole tree, brush, cloud, an explosion, lighting... you get the point. They can be - a couple of leaves, a couple of grass blades

Heres my attempt, im upto 1 and a quarter hours, 1/2 an hour to draw the line stuff in pencil, 3/4 of an hour in PS doing colouring, there is 18 layers not including the line art on top of the colour. and yes, in the line art the top line is wonky, no idea why, didnt mean for it to be, but in colour its not.

Hey guys, here's my warbot I came up with. plasma cannon as well as missile launcher on the left arm. His feet are so to be able to trek through any type of terrain where humans often cannot (imagine him hanging on the side of a cliff, sighting in on a troop of men who in the harsh environment cant see him hanging over them). Not entirely done, need to do a lot more coloring and fix those strokes a bit.
Hi, i have to say your picture is a start. What you could do to straighten up those lines in photoshop is use a few quick buttons. When you have selected your brush you can click at one point, hold the shift key, then click to the point you want it to go and it produces a straight line. This makes it look much better.
If you think its hard to paint good lines in photoshop you can also use a pencil reference. So make the pencil drawing on plain paper and just overdraw the robot. While you keep drawing you can produce better lines and a better perspective for your robot. There is certainly a good robot in that quick sketch there.
What i can say about the coloring is, you have to use colors that are emotion and feel connected. For myself, i never use grey, because its a dull flat color. Another thing to look at is, where does my " sun " come from. So that you can try to make the right shadows and the right uplit spots.
If its not clear what im saying, i will paint some examples later on this day.
* Update *
Hi, Here is a small picture and example i created to show you how you can practice with coloring and light. Hope its usefull.

Heres my attempt, im upto 1 and a quarter hours...................
You have some perspective issues. You have to look at the basic perspective views.
You have 3 different perspective views to draw from.
The 1 - Point Perspective
http://z.about.com/d/drawsketch/1/0/U/3/perspective1.jpg
The 2 - Point Perspective
http://z.about.com/d/drawsketch/1/0/_/3/twopoint1.jpg
The 3 - Point Perspective
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q13/jbrushes/threePoint.jpg
Your drawing has to be on base of the lines or else i won't look correct a lot of the times. I hope this is usefull. Keep it up.

anyways... my genius tablet decided not to work anymore, so i made my entry oldschool. pencil, paper, 2,5 hours. hope you like.

Thank you for your comment. Your traditional drawing skills are very good. Your character is also very nice. I Don't feel he is very robotic, i think if he had some metal legs or some other elements it would feel more robotic. Now its more like a character from i-robot. Will smith played a character that has alot of metalic parts in his body, but you cannot see alot of that detail during the movie, only when his arm damages, thats why i think it doesn't look very robotic. The skill is superb. Thank you, keep it up

Its part of a story. I made this picture for the contest, but i can use it for my own project as well. The fact that the main character on the robots hand is bigger is true. I have to find a good balance between everything. The robot wants to pick up " the character " on the hand. Im working on it though. Thanks for comment.

do you think that the robot is compatible with the main character.. i mean will be a bit weird a robot picking up a human... wonder what chat up lines it would use.. lol..
nah seriously.. i get what you mean.. looks good.. the only thing that i would say is perhaps scale the people on the floor a little bit.. just a tad.. perhaps... and then it be a great picture.. (well in my opinion anyway).. :D

I see some nice concepts around here.
Here's my entry: 2 hours HB + B5 pencils.
This is a "pregnant" medical robot which continues the fetus' growth in case the mother doesn't survive due to an accident or something similar. The right foot looks weird, but I don't know how to really draw feet, or hands.

@ Tjerkotten - the hand still looks like its a illusion painting done on the floor, the thumb is broken sort of, i mean it looks flat not flesh ,and definitely not metal. else all is nicey nice.
@inprogress- awesome stuff . ya the right foot looks if hes tip toeing. ull have to use overlap here. the front part of the foot will hide the rest half ,only the ankles will protrude.

Cool to see another 3D artist, doing concept art as well. The background perspective is good. Somehow the robot in the front feels a little bit off. Perhaps its too big or the stance of the arms. Don't really know, still the color emotion is very good. Keep it up

Played around with a few ideas finally... but I guess I won't make a final picture this time and in time that is. :) So I share at least the sketch for now...
Will try to experiment a bit with coloring now, but i fear I won't be happy with the result really. ;)
The idea is that once upon a time when humankind was estinguished the Maschinenmenschen (yeah.. I watched Metropolis recently ;-) ) took over the earth and started to live by themself developing their neural networks etc. and slowly reaching a state where they were intelligent enough to realize their own existence and roots (represented by the human skull). It's a bit Hamlet'ish maybe.
ca. 1/2 h with ArtRage
tokai
06-12-2008, 10:28 PM
Some color blocking... a bit progress. I'm happy with the direction the skull is going to.. but not so much with the Maschinenmensch face. Drawing shiny metal with oil paint is more tricky than expected, especiall ArtRage decided now to lag on each stroke massively. Don't know why that happens, but I need some sleep now anyway... ;)

Spend the whole day now to paint the same thing 2 times, because ArtRage decided it can't read its own files again without crashing, so I had to redo all the work I did this morning... bah.. Please, don't imagine my cursing. ;)
Let's call it a day and declare it final...
approx. 6-7 hours with artrage (not counting in the 3 wasted hours) and some 15 minutes final adjustments in Photoshop.
