Lynette-3dt
09-12-2008, 07:25 PM
This is a notice that the AVATAR competition will be coming to the Threedy forums soon. A special sub forum will be created for the challenge.
Due to the short notice provided with the rules and details of this challenge, we have been unable to get the competition sub forum set up on the Threedy forums with immediate effect. We are now working to bring this challenge to all English speaking participants of the challenge and we thank you for your patience whilst we go through the specifications of the competition and set up the sub forum for you. Once the competition is set up on Threedy, it will be announced from the top news bar and linked to the correct thread in the special sub forum.
Any questions in the meantime, please contact Lynette Clee at lynette@3dtotal.com, who is assisting Leonid Kozienko with this event.

Here's some more details whilst we work on getting this set up!
AVATAR
International Art Competition
08.12.2008 – 08.03.2009
To all artists, 3d artists and just creative folks!
CreatureDesign.org and CGFight.com together with 3DTotal.com community present 2D/3D International Art Competition «Avatar». We thought it would be great to gather artists from all over the world to fight creative task together. We really want to turn it into a remarkable, exciting and fun event so we’ve invited an amazing group of artists to our judges’ panel and partnered up with great sponsors. On the judges panel we’ve got professional artists from all over the world - from Russia and China to America and New Zealand. These are world class masters Donato Giancola and Todd Lockwood; fantastic illustrator and painter Christophe Vacher (credits includes «Hercules», «Tarzan», «Treasure Planet» etc.); stunning illustrator and concept artist from Sony Pictures Animation Armand Serrano («Lilo and Stitch», «Mulan», «Surf’s Up» etc.); animator, writer and character designer for Marvel Comics Steve Gordon («Madagascar», «Shrek 2», «Over the Hedge» etc.); visual effects designer, Gnomon School instructor and «Maya 6 Killer Tips» book author Eric Hanson (credits includes «The Day After Tomorrow», «Mission to Mars», «Atlantis», «The 5th Element» etc.); digital sculptor Steve Jubinville, who worked on film «300», as well as popular videogame «Assassin's Creed» and «Prince of Persia» series from Ubisoft; Francisco Cortina, one of the best 3d modelers on the planet (credits include full-cg movies «Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within» and «Animatrix: Final Flight of the Osiris», characters for videogames «Final Fantasy IX» and «Parasite Eve»); talented Russian painter Andrei Riabovitchev, character designer for «Prince Vladimir»; Timur Mutsaev, great concept artist from Crytek... 25 people in total!
«Avatar» sponsors and partners include such companies as Corel, E-on Software, Luxology, Pilgway, Pixologic, Wacom, publishers Ballistic Publishing (Expose, Exotique, d'Artiste etc. series of books for artists) and 3DTotal.com (2DArtist and 3DCreative magazines). Our VFX partner is CINEFEX magazine, the legendary edition with a 25-year history featuring advanced technologies in the visual effects production and computer graphics in the movies. The main media partners are popular portals 3DNews.ru and DesignCollector, specialized resource for game developers DTF.RU, the largest community of digital artists CGSociety.org, as well as many other sites like 3DTotal.ru, ArtTower.ru, CGTalk.ru, Comics.com.ua, Drawmanga.ru, Illustrators.ru, ipixar.ru, Lightwave3d.ru and Powerclip.ru.
The competition will run from Dec 08, 2008 with the deadline set on Mar 08, 2009. There are three nominations for submitted images: 2D and 3D illustration, as well as stylized illustration (especially for comic and cartoon style fans!). Besides the great prizes for winners, all of the participants, who will provide final submissions, will get special offers from our partners! Considering theme, «Avatar» is the Sanskrit word which literally means «descent» and usually implies a deliberate descent from higher spiritual realms to lower realms of existence for special purposes. It often translates into English as incarnation, although it’s not quite right. In our case, we encourage artists to imagine their avatars living in fictitious worlds. Would it be a totally futuristic, alien realm or maybe something primitive and close to nature? Imagine a world you'd like to live in and tell us about it. You are free to create any life form for your avatar character, just make sure it has some charisma and personality. We'd like to see not just alien vistas but images with a story, so we encourage participants to tell interesting stories in their works. In other words, we’d like to maximize your creative output. Who knows, maybe «Avatar» will be the starting point in your career or a new milestone of your creativity?

Good luck and all the best,
«Avatar» Team

the point is to transcend your self into a form of an avatar, so the fight between good and evil in you implemented on an avatar, or a super ego tripping version of your self :) this should be an interesting event to see, and observe the final submissions

so the idea is to create a character that represents you? Or am I missing something.
I think what is throwing me off is the link to the guidlines, once you click it, it takes you to a page with no guidelines.

To be honest, this is something that the AVATAR guys wrote into the rules, so I'll have to check on that for you with them. I personally have no problems with it, but as it's their competition that we're hosting, I'll have to check and get back to you

It was the first thing i tried to do.
I've already edited and changed the title tab but that's weird, the title into the thread is the right one but outside it's the old one. o_O Maybe a bug?

I have a question, when i finish the work where do i have poste my final work.
Hello, I've heard back from the organisers of the AVATAR competition and I have been told that they will be creating a user gallery for all artists to upload their works to directly. They are starting work on setting this up now, and they will announce for us before the final date where and how everyone is to upload their work, in time for the deadline. They apologise for the small delay.
Hi, so what colour set is ok for this rbg or cmyk?
I'm not sure! I would suggest you go with RGB as the main work is being done for screen, and then you can always convert the image to CMYK at a later date if the work is to be printed for any reason.

So I have one question before I create my thread (a bit late I must ad)
I don´t know if I what to do a 3D or 2D image, or actually I don't know in which category my image would be placed. I use almost everything in 3D but then I paint over everything in photoshop so it looks more 2D.
In what category am I going to place my entry?
Lynette-3dt
05-02-2009, 05:35 PM
Hi mr_carl,
I've just recapped on the rules and it states:
Categories
• 2D Illustration
• 3D Image
• Comic (Cartoon) Style Image
For the 2D category you can use any 2D software package (Corel Painter, Adobe Photoshop, etc.) and/or any traditional mediums, like colour pencils, acrylics or oil paints, to create the final image.
For the 3D category you can use any 3D software for modelling and rendering. For post-processing you can use any compositing software (Apple Shake, Eyeon Digital Fusion, Adobe After Effects, etc.). To clarify things, you must provide a clean render ("as is") without any post-production effects in a WIP sheet (see WIP Sheet section for further details).
For the comic (cartoon) style category you can use any 2D/3D software package and/or any traditional mediums like colour pencils, acrylics, or oil paints to create the final image.
Thinking it over, the rules require that if you submit a 3D entry then you must provide a clean render without any post-production as part of your submission, so if you're simply going to create models in 3D to then paint over, this may not be your category. I'm actually not entirely sure - it seems like you're borderline. Can you give me a more detailed outline of how you're going to create the final image, including the software you're going to use?
If you're going for a comic/stylised entry then you'd easily be fine in that category, as this one seems to encompass both 2D and 3D! But if you're not going for a cartoon/stylised image, please let me know some more info and I'll think some more on it ... I will also get in touch with the guys running the challenge to check on it for you.

Hi Lynette,
Thanks for such a quick answer.
So here is a quick walkthrou of the way I´m working.
First I create the scene in Modo to get the layout I want. I then put some basic shaders on my objects and light the scene to get a ground image.
After rendering out the scene with the alfas, ao, reflection etc. channels I open photoshop and kind of recreates most part of the image, place textures and colourcorrect, creates background etc. and then I´m done.
It files like I´m on the borderline but I think have a great concept so I don´t want to miss this challenge.

Hey mr_carl, I've just mailed the guys running the challenge so I'll see what they say. I'm tempted to think you're in the 3D category - it's tricky to say for sure without checking with the organisers, so I'll let you know when I hear back from them - shouldn't be long at all :)

Hi, I just got this feedback:
If you use 3D tools and other stuff just as helping materials and reference to make a 2D illustration, then it should be placed in 2D.
Does that help...?
mr_carl
05-02-2009, 06:33 PM
Ok I will place it in 2D category, Thanks allot for the help.

Hello, I've literally just downloaded a couple of emails from the AVATAR guys with regards to this, so I'll check out the details and post an update in here ASAP once I've had time to look over how it's going to work. Thanks for your patience on this! :)
Lynette-3dt
25-02-2009, 12:20 PM
Hi everyone! Back with info, as promised :)
Ok, so what's happening is the AVATAR guys are setting up a gallery on a special website; they are currently fine-tuning it and tell me that this should be done within 1-2 days. They will then launch the final submission process details to everyone.
They tell me that submitting artists will have to register (I've been told this is real quick to do!) to upload your work and provde additional details about yourselves.
I'll keep you posted when I know more - this is all I know at the moment. As this is the first year they've run such a big competition it's inevitable that they've encountered some unexpected issues/delays, so please do bare with us whilst we wait for further info :)
Thanks!
