Hello, this is my first post on threedy forums and it's my first contest.
I've started to work on the concept i'll post a first description soon.
Good luck all, have fun with your work!
[Edit]
Ok, so here is the conceptual idea:
A young god descends to the underworld using its personal mount, a crow. He wants to get a powerfull artifact, an old powerful warrior god's chest armor, sealed on a well protected sanctuary.
The problem is that there are powerful guardian monsters, sort of demons, keeping the place. So the young god will take the form of an elder priest to deceive the guardians...
He needs the chest armor because the powers of the old warrior god remain on it.
Why does he need power? His lover has been taken by another bad god (maybe an evil war god), and this one want her to marry him using force if necessary, poor goddess...
The big guardians will be chained to columns, the chest armor will be on an altar one the center of a wide place.
I'll try to make some research and documentation now, maybe some sketches too.
I'm sorry with my bad english, not my mother tongue.
Cya
[Edit]
I made some sketch test, but the previous concept with the sanctuary is not giving me enough inspiration.
It's too complicated for me, every times the scenery takes too much space and the main character is erased.
So first I'll try to focus on the main character, the avatar.
Concept 2:
A young god incarnated as a warrior descent to the underworld because he is the only one amongst the gods who can claim for an old powerful legacy remaining there, but shadows are waiting for him in the darkness...
I had some old sketches...

I've decided to work on the second pose, I'll get some more detailed sketches next time.
I've tried to get a preview of the scenery ambiance, composition and lightning test:

Will you find the three monster moss hidden on the swamp?
I'll need some more documentation about mangrove swamps and wet atmosphere.

Thanks a lot Munkybutt, if you practice enough, I'm sure it's only a matter of time that you get better than me, keep going on and sharpen your observation senses.
I got a drawing teacher on my school and I'm always fighting with him because i can't accept my own mistakes, but I still have so much to learn... That's how you grown up, accepting your own mistakes and hunting them, and if you can't always track them, sometimes others can help you. ;)
I've been working on the shape and details of my avatar's sketch, I'll start the painting process soon adding some more volume and texture.
But first i need to work on the sketch of the scenery, I have already got some swamp documentation and inspiration for my hidden monsters.

I've been working a bit on the composition of the scenery.

I've also started to paint the face of my character, cleaning my sketch.

Next time, I'll try to get the whole body cleaned.

Thanks a lot Munkybutt, -IdanI-, and penguins, i truly appreciate. Now I'll need to surpass your expectations. (O_o) ...
Bad news for me:
I need to stop my painting work for a while because i got an important 3D project to finish for my studies, but I'll be back on the end of January / beginning of February.
But I'll continue to watch over your threads to see the advancement of your masterpieces, don't worry.

So far love your work,
and in that last image you made
you used well the texture, it looks very realistic!
Great work :)

Incredible stuff. If I gained the ability to draw that well all at once I think my head would probably explode. I think my favorite thing about it is that I haven't ever seen anything quite like it. The combination of elements you have here is very interesting. Ethereal and vaguely dangerous all at once.

Excellent stuff, good backstory and great painting. The crab is looking fabulous and I really, really like yore concept of the main character.
Main character really interesting, I like proportions and forms.
First scetch awesome!

POSEIdOON: I wanted to make a texture work for this challenge, i don't want to achieve a realistic result but that it seems "realistic".
Your magnetic field concept is really interesting, i like it, a lot of electric potential.
Jibberwocky:Ethereal and vaguely dangerous all at once.
You've got the feeling! That's what i want to communicate. And i know you're also working on something toothly dangerous.
mr_carl: Your "goat of the earth" concept is also amazing, i like the contrast between the fantastic side and the modern side. I should have used a 3D proxy for my "temple" because painting stairs is a real pain in the a.. , and i'm not really familiar with perspective. I wonder if you wanted to participate in the 3D category with your modelling work, because it was a good 3D workstart, really.
ez5k: I prefer your Vesta sketches :), and your modeling work is really impressive. ( I don't know how did you get this style of viewport in 3dsmax) Maybe you should scale down the legs. Your 3D work is one of my favourite in this contest, good luck.
Here is a little upgrade of my work, I've been working on my temple, some texturing on my main character, and some more trees.
I still got so much painting work (background vegetation, water details, sky, lightning, colors...) and I'm progressing soo slowly...

Temple upgrade... i'll need to add some shadows, fix some details...
It's not really a temple, it's a warrior's tomb.

Got some internet connection problem, not resolved yet, so here is a quick
update from a cybercafe, I've nearly finished, some more adjustement, I'll try to post my final entry tonight with a complete WIP.
I'm waiting for your comments tonight for my corrections, :) . I really appreciate negative or positive critics, points of views, comments...
I'm also waiting for your final with a lot of impatience. Good luck for the achievement!!!

Well... again looks amazing! I think the reflective image on the water needs a bit more distortion.. like small waves present in every aquatic ambient. And the cross section between the character and the water looks a bit strange because the absence of waves. Looks like the objects are above a mirror unless water. But don't get me wrong mate.. you have a great piece of work here. Just one more thing... maybe you should put something on the horizon..mountains.. I don't know.. looks like the water is in contact with the sky.
Good luck!!

decosouza:
First time I'm working on 2D moving water reflection, I've used wave distortion, it's the same procedural for the left tree than the character.
In fact there are two distortion pass on the whole reflected images, but it doesn't look like the same maybe because the shapes are not on the same scale, i don't know... I'll try to get a better result next time.
The "mirror" style is not completly unwanted, if you look really carefully (you can't see it on my low def image), there are three circular wave around the character, the water is calm enough, just some wind.
About the cross section, it isn't clean, that's some correction I should do.
About the background, (it sucks I agree), we're in front of the sea's flat horizon (I know you like mountains :)). In reality, i had to finish it quickly, but i wanted to add some more blur or mist, maybe I'll make some corrections and post it later out of challenge. It's impossible for me to work on my image the 08 : /
But thankz a lot for the constructive comments decosouza, I really appreciate, it helps me a lot.
My turn now: your background seems horizontally streched (I'm not the only one to get problems with backgrounds :D), and I can't see the face of your beautiful lion, the woodstick is hiding his face, maybe you should move it a little bit. And a last comment: Zbrush rockz!
And here is a medium res piece, and the WIP sheet, I've already made my submission on the cgartaward gallery.

While I agree the reflection is a bit strong, I can tell you right now that if my piece were in the 2d bracket rather than 3d, I would have given up after seeing this. Incredible work.

WOW!!! It's the best one here for sure.....in my opinion....
I really loved it......and about the reflection.....if we compare this with reality that's really strong.....but it's a so differente environment and style....that it's just perfect....Good luck....!!....you don't really need that :P

Ok... I can see the waves:smug: And don't get me wrong mate... like I said before you have done a GREAT work! It's really a beautiful image. About the face of my lion.. I just saw it when was too late to fix it:wall: and the streched background was intentional.
You certainly could be one of the winners! Great art.
Good Luck my friend!

I'll post a corrective later (about the reflection problem, character's crossection problem, the background problem, the root-arm problem, some depth value problems, lightning, colors, some details etc...) Yes there is still some work...:'(
mr_carl: I like the crab too, it was my favorite part of the work. And it's great that you finished it in time you too, you're on my favourites painting on the 2D category.
decosouza: you can still move the stick if you want to, even out of competition ;)
Daniela: I don't really believe in luck.
I don't know why but I want to paint a crow now, and i think I'll post it on threedy, maybe some dark spells...
Jibberwocky: I would have given up after seeing this.
Hey there will be no fun if none participate, don't said that, if we can't compete we can't get better. Look at the constructives comments on the forum on any thread, you can get the point of view of others artist/CG/painters that can only help you. If you don't participate you can't improve your skills, that's how you get experience.
But you know, everybody's got different skills, and that's what make this whole thing really interesting.
I've learned a lot during this first contest and each thread advancing get me motivated to continue my way.
Maybe we don't all share the same way, but there are crossroads, without crossroads, you can't see or even know there is other ways.
Next time maybe I'll be on the 3D category and you on the 2D, who knows?
