tb1alexc: when it's all said and done, you will want to rotate all your wheels so that the textures don't jump out at the viewer as mirrored. Just give each one a 15 degree rotate, meaning, you can leave the front tire alon, but rotate the next one 15, then the next one 30, so on and so forth.

CasyeyD2K - I checked out a few pictures of round fog lights. And according to them they are round on the back and flat on the front (glass). On your model it's the opposite ;P. I like how the jeep has turned out, really goodlooking. Though two miniguns hanging on the sides seems quite overkill :). How do they hang and where does the ammo come from? :)

Good lookin out! Something like that (ther lights) seems as easy as flipping the geometry and reducing the flattened part! I agree about the guns, they do seem a bit over kill. I really wanted to mount something like a turret or howitzer or something in the back. It would probably benefit the model both aesthetically and geometrically.to have one mounted instead of 2 hanging.

I'll change that! Thank you very much for the help/advice!

CaseyD2K, well done! Are you going to use normal maps as well?

I've actually never Normal Mapped anything before, and part of the motivation for this contest was for me to try to figure that out! I think a normal mapped version of this would be awesome so i hope I can pull it off!

If not, i'll just texture the crap out of it Haha!

Thanks!

Other than the tires what else would the normal map be good for? Bullet holes and damage maybe?

Buzzy

what else would the normal map be good for?
Pretty much everything.

Casey, if you wanted to learn normal map workflow, vehicles are about the worst thing you could start with. Organic stuff like characters are much easier to do.

HulaHuga - Ben Mathis pretty much re-taught me how to model! Haha! I hadn't done anything 3D related in almost 2 years and that site helped me through the difficult re-learning process!

Buzzy- Thanks for the heads up! Maybe i'll take my driver out for some serious normal mapping experimentation.

tb1alexc - Those hubcaps are intense! I can't wait to see this done!

the models being put up are amaziing,
Warlock, I love your style and how the car looks, nice
Casey, excellent, I really like your the most recent one, the side mounted guns look awesome.
alex, love that massive gun. all coming along exceleently,

To anyone else i have missed, excellent job.

I would participate if i could even grasp the concepts, i muk with 3ds max at home, but rarely produce anything of any quality.

Once again, nice and cant wait to see the finished results.

Been playing around with this for the past few days. I finally worked out how to make the tracks using animation snapshot. Original art by George "Speed" Webber, from the old Car Wars day ( I lived my life on those races). My count is too high with the wheels coming at 13k, so I'll rebuild to a 8 side and see how it plays...other dimensions came from my Sand Scorcher...No Miniguns here...it's all about rockets...lots of rockets...:)

you don't need to rework your wheels, just delete the faces noone will see when the treads are added. Basically, everything after the first big chunk of wheel can go. You do that, you might get down to 5,000 tris.

Katana: You might be able to get away with just normal mapping those bolts on the wheels. would save you considerable tri's. Knocking out some of the details on the wheels near the back like big toe suggested is definetely a good idea since when the model is complete you really wont see that much underneath.

Oltskul: thats unfortunate man, hopefully see you in on dominance war.

CaseyD2K - Yeah, that's turned out really great so far. Looking forward to seeing what you do settle on for the gun[s]. Wouldn't be interested in putting up a shot of the underside would ya? From the angles you've got, it's got plenty of detail, so I'm just got wondering how much you actually committed to the under side.

tb1alexc - I'm diggin' the amount of texture on the wheels, be careful with it, as really contrasty stuff can sometimes get a little bit noisy.

Shur'tal - Thanks, I'm glady you enjoy it. :) You could always jump in if you wanted, even if you don't finish, or even intend to, it wouldn't hurt to work along with the group, and get some feedback.

katana - Killer! Nice choice on the concept, and solid execution so far. Can't wait to see where you go with it from here. Rockets/missles FTW.

Oltskul - Hate to see you dropout, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Hopefully we'll see you back for the next one. :)

BiG ToE - Sweet. That antennae is perfect. Love the beat up look of the car, certainly looks like its been around the block, and that it took the hard route at that. My only crit, and this is just a matter of personal taste more than anything, would be the double wheels, I probably would have put them in the back, so they're supporting the heavy rockets, course if you've got rockets propelling you straight, 4 wheels in the front might be what you'd need to turn. Anyway, looking solid, can't wait to see what you do after your drag it thru the Mud.

Still diffuse. There's a lot more detail to be added in yet, and I've still got 3x 1024x1024 maps to eat up yet... Then it's on to normals, spec, emit, reflection, bump etc...

tb1alexc: you make me want to start over. man that thing rocks does the driver sit under the barrels of the gun.

Oltskul: Sorry to hear your stopping. was really looking forward to seeing the finished product. anyway hope to see you in the next one.

BIG ToE 3DT: love the strap-on engines.

CaseyD2K: good to see that someone other than me was motivated to try normal mapping for the first time. good luck

katana: what can i say but :drool::drool::drool::drool:

taking longer than i wanted to finish modeling this one. fortunately both the vehicle and driver are at about the 95% done. here's a quick update on the vehicle (17,200 tris)

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/344/vehiclekp7.jpg

still have some minor details to address, luckily i've been unwrapping as i went so that part wont take long. Never actually textured or normal mapped anything before and i have no idea what i'm doing in that regard. wish me luck.

Unfortunately I got really busy the past week and was not able to work on my model but I buckled down and got some progress done tonight. I'm at about 17k tri's I think I'll just use the rest up smoothing a few of the pieces and maybe add a few details to the cockpit. I'm probably not going to normal map this one there really is no need.

Everyone's entries are looking really awesome it's going to be interesting to see who wins this one. Hope I can still finish on time!

Still trying to decide whether to enter this one or not... I have an idea based around a normal F1 car, but with a modern twist to it so perhaps I'll do a 3d mock up and post it.

Nice work so far everyone. Too many to comment on individually, but looking up the page

Katana - nice looking model so far :)

Big Toe - Looks suitably silly. Has to be bright pink with orange polkadots for the texture ;)

theaquarianspac - nice flow to the model

McKronic - I think the shape could do with a bit of tweaking to make it more interesting, but it's coming along nicely

tb1alexc - you're getting through this really quickly which is great, but the textures are looking a bit too detailed right now. Try making the parts a little clearer with a better contrast as the shape of the vehicle is getting lost under the paint job right now

Ok, this is where I'm heading with this one. Originally I was thinking hover car but I ended up adding wheels with individual suspension, steering and mini-engines in the hubs... About 10k tris to date but this will probably all be scrapped and rebuilt to allow for higher detail

some amazing vehicles out there. well beyond my skill level....great work guys

I'm going for a steampunk motorcycle. It is ridden in the horizontal position with the feet controls in the back. The small wheel in the back is only on the ground during acceleration/deceleration. Jets of steam come out the pipes in the back for the power boost that levels out the motorcycle. I hope to be posting screens of the rider later tonight.

With just under 7k tris used I've got plenty of room to smooth things out and maybe add in a few gauges and what not.

theaquarianspac - Looks rad. Very Mad-Max-esque. The body appears to be rather short and squat, but it still looks cool. And I have no idea how anyone is supposed to see out of those louvers in the front.
tb1alexc - Looks awesome, but your textures appear decidedly lo-res. Two 2048 maps is HUGE. I'm finding that my bike looks fine with a single 2048, so two of them should be crystal clear.
McKronic - Really cool retro-scifi design. Think we could see some perspective shots? It's kind of hard to read in tiny ortho images.
Perversonality - The giant wheels make it look like a horse-drawn F1 car. Still looks cool though. I think the suspension could use some more authentic detail.
ianchaos - wicked cool uni-racer. There are actually alot of people that build these things for real. Check this out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/klaash63/3123516588/sizes/o/

Ianchaos - looks like a cool design! Definitely more original than a lot of the others, including mine!

Thanks for the comments chaps :) The wheels look a little better from behind in terms of the size and placement. The engine parts are going to change to something more solid and the suspension will still be hydraulic based, but probably beefed up. F1 cars tend to have light suspension so it's kind of more consistent how it is right now. I've also got to work out the way that the parts attach to the main body which will have a bearing on the final design too... Lots to do as always!

Perversonality..That's a slick design...nice going...Too bad I'll have to blow it up on the track...lol, but I figure you could use the painting practice...huh?

ianchaos I never considered going the route of Steampunk...you got some serious modelling there...neat idea on the little rear wheel.

theaquarianspac..Man, I wish I had that during my Car Wars days...maybe I would have gotten my a$$ handed to me....(and I'm the one who taught all my friends to play that game...what fun!) Just need to add a sawed off shotgun and a ragged dog...lol

I always wondered what 60 four inch rocket tubes would look like....These "Screamin' Mimi" are courtesy of an abandoned Sherman T-34, left behind in an old military museum. The tubes were too long so they were cut down. effective range thought to be about 2000 yards. The tubes will be scaled up to 4.5 inches as my initial research was wrong, but hey, who really cares if you're on the bad end of these things..huh? I'm still banging out the front fender (not shown) and there will be a gunner position located at the sunroof. I dropped the tub to fill the gaps behind the tracks, there will be virtually no interior as the armor plating will hide everything....more to come...thanks for all the great comments...love this challenge.

OK, I know I'm coming in really late on this one. And I doubt that I'll get this done in time. But, what they heck. What's life without a little challenge once in a while, right? So, my original idea was for a limousine with a bunch of pop out hatches for concealed weaponry. I've decided not to do that and to do this one instead. It's a 1937 Cord, one of the most beautiful cars ever produced (IMHO of course). If I can get the basics done in time, then I'm going to futurize it a bit with hover pads instead of wheels and other gadgetry. But, of course, it'll still have to keep it's elegance. I hope I can keep up with this one. There is a lot of really cool stuff in this challenge.

Hey guys, Been a while since I updated any progress. Here is the latest update with a few new angles to show how i'm making certain things look more interesting than they are. Comments and Critiques are always more than welcome:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y68/CaseyD2k/Jeep_Update_Armed.jpg

I modeled some of the undercarriage but I modeled it as if you would only see it from the front, back and sides al a Twisted Metal style! I'm still sitting on about a hundred triangles so I might tighten it up down there a bit. I attached the gattling guns to the front end more appropriately and made them smaller. I also mounted a guided missle system to the back as kind of a special attack! Added a steering wheel, a stick shift, a rear view mirror and a license plate to expand on the interior and exterior.

Maybe i'll put an air freshner in the cab! Hahaha!

In other news....

Got a chance to look through the forum and I see some pretty impressive work here and there!

Katana - The back end of that thing is lookin super sweet I love the tank treads! It looks like you managed to down-size those wheels in order to fit the limit. Great job!

Warlock 279 - I half built the underside due to my limit but, like I mentioned in my image post, I figured no one was going to see it from the underside. It works from every other angle and I managed to fit it into my count.

tb1alexc - That thing looks tough as nails dude! You might want to soften those textures though it's looking pretty flat and to high contrast. I'm sure this is a work in progress and obviously not a finished texture job. Some specular mapping will fix that thing right up though!

IanChaos - I'm diggin' that Steam-Punk bike, can't wait to see the textures on that bad boy! Very cool!

BigToe - That looks like something out of Heavy Metal magazine. Can't wait to see your character!

Theaquarianspac - Coming along real nice so far! Those hubcaps are pretty rockin! Nice edge flow too. I love the Gattling guns over the back! and the plated window in front is awesome! You still within your limit?

Warlock 279, theaquarianspac, CaseyD2K : Thank you for the kind comments...looking forward to seeing the finish with you all....

After some backstabbing comments about speed...a quick Google search turned up a metal scrap yard in Kuwait that was dumping a bunch of used jet engines...we bought three..ignoring the U.S. manufacturing markings on the sides..seems they were purchased at well above the general price range and only left to collect dust in the desert...politics I'm sure...anyway...installation went well...and we even have parts left over....the best part is that fuel is actually affordable again...yea!

I'm very pleased with my count so far. I still am intending to do a decent representation of the front axle and steering linkage, shocks, front rock guard, more armor, tidy things up, a turret, more bits and pieces...and finish off the pods. Which i put into place because my crew only stand about 4 feet tall and the stack of phone books on the seats weren't cuttin' it...

Buzzy: Thanks for the comment about the (what did you call them?) louvre, over the wind shield. i will have to adjust that.

CaseyD2K: Undercarrage was a nice touch. Really pulls the overall look of the model together. I can see that thing, laying waste to everything in its path already. BTW, I still have 3,000 tris to spare, more if I scrap the missles launcher hidden under the seats (see 1st post) you will probably never see them (until its to late) anyway.

tb1alexc - textures are looking good so far, maybe try to add a little more variation the vehicle looks almost solid rust

CaseyD2K - solid model, should be a fun one to un-wrap

Ok, so I have finally finished the UV mapping it turned out pretty good. The layout is pretty tight on the one map but on my 2nd it's not as compact but I wanted to have equal uv space for all the pieces so I left it a little bare since nothing would benefit too much from being scaled up marginal amounts.

McKronic: Great job keeping the textures even.

Tetsuya: Great looking bike.

katana: That thing just looks dangerous, for the opponents and the driver. Really cool.

tb1alexc: Looks good but it's a little dark to really see what's going on with the textures.

CaseyD2K: Beep Beep a small jeep, running down the street. This is looking killer. There are some spots where you could shave some polys, but it's looking so good, I don't think anyone will mind.

Perversonality: I really like the drive mechanisms in the wheels. Good touch.

Perversonality : Oh...you wanted to race......(Silly me...:D)

I won't need to race you if you are placing jet engines in the body of the car. Still, it will look pretty in my rear view screen when you self-ignite :D

@tb1alexc - try setting the texture to 80-100% self-illumination so that we can see the details. It still looks a little bit over-cooked to me, but that could just be the viewport settings

katana: Even with a jet engine you may not be the fastest machine in the race, but I feel sorry for anyone who gets in your way :)
grindill: looking good...you can't go wrong with the classics.
McKronic: you're UV layout looks good. I hate laying out UVs, and mine rarely look that clean.
Perversonality: love the style of your machine...can't wait to see it textured.

Not much of an update...used all but about 1200 of my tris smoothing this thing out. Now it's off to z-brush to smash this bike up a bit....It's in too good a condition to be a steam-punk bike :)

tb1alexc - That's coming together really nicely. Those are some really nice gritty textures, with plenty of weathering on them. I can't wait to see what you work in with smaller details, those will really sell the textures on this.

theaquarianspac - Model looks quite nice now, much smoother and more rounded out now. Only thing I can see that's missing is some side mirrors., other than that, I'd guess you're about ready for texturing.

- Looks pretty good. The top view has a really nice silhouette, and the side isn't bad, but the front seems kinda of lacking. Have you considered curving the wings down just a bit perhaps? Not a lot, but I think a subtle little curve would help make the straight on silhouette more interesting. Maybe a vertical fin/spoiler or two as well?

[B]Daddy OH - Nice find with those two tutorials, looks like they should prove useful.

Perversonality - That's wicked cool looking. I second Buzzy about the suspension, it could use some more traditional elements. In any case, its looking really futuristic and sleek, I'm looking forward to your final version.

katana - When you said lots of rockets, you weren't kiddin'! Looks like a whole lot of mean so far, can't wait to see what you do with the front end. I like the jet engines, s'pose they're the perfect answer to those calling your car slow.

grindill - Nice start, I think the pop-up/out weapons sound pretty cool. There's still plenty of time. :)

CaseyD2K - Looks good. I like the mount in the back. I think you handled the underside really well. Didn't over do it, you've got enough detail to suggest realism, without wasting tons of tris, Well done.

Tetsuya - Looking good. Wheels look like they could use a few more segments if you can spare them, otherwise, I think you're doing a pretty bang up job on a crazy complex bike. http://forums.3dtotal.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

ianchaos - Looking really cool. I agree with McKronic, it does have a certain Dr Suess vibe to it, which I think sets it apart from a lot of the other vehicles in this. Do you have any weapons planned for it?

Small update from my pit stall, been rather slow going with other distractions lately. "Foundation" is mostly done, save for side windows, so its a matter detailing it up now for the most part. Sitting at just a touch under 10k at the moment.

Rock Solid Warlock! Really great looking so far.

10k? Really? Sure you're not counting polys? looks like you have half of that 10k in the wheels alone.

Regardless, its an awesome model. Really looking forward the final entry thread for this comp!

Not alot of progress on mine. Here's a shot of it unwrapped. I have started texturing, but its not far enough along that I feel like showing it yet.

Your model is looking great it looks very tough im liking what you did with the windshield, can't wait to see what weapons you put on it

Hey folks, all the entries are looking fantastic. This is going to be one hell of a race!

Katana: Looks great mate, though I can't say I'm very fond of the pods on the sides? Maybe rework it so that your driver(s) can sit insde the vehicle?

theaquarianspac: Looks awesome dude! Out of curiosity, what program are you using to model?

Grindill: Looks good, though it's a little hard to judge anything yet!

Perversonality: Wow, that's cool. Reminds me of some kind of robotic F1 car or something. Really classy, can't wait to see it textured.

IanChaos: great idea, and that's looking really really cool! I assume you'll be going all-out with textures?

McKronic: looks very UFO-ish. I bet that would look awesome with some battered, dirty texturing!

Warlock: Yikes. Damn, that's one hot car. I agree with buzzy, are you sure that's in tris? Lol, awesome modelling! And you've got 10k left for weapons.. Gee, I'l' just have to blow it up on the starting line... ;P

Tetsuya: Reminds me a lot of the LEGO Roboriders from a few years back... looks very cool, what sort of colours will you be using? I'm thinking dark greay and ice blue...

CaseyD2K: Awesome jeep bud! Really digging the rockets too!

Buzzy: Awesome bike there mate, what sort of weapons does it boast?

Here's some updates on mine. I wasn't happy with the body, so it's been extensively remodelled (read 'remodelled' as 'removed'). What you thinky?

Warlock: Thanks, I knew I forgot something.

tbalexc1: Whatever those guns can't blow the sh@t out of, can still be run over...repeatedly. sweet. Oh and I use Maya for the most part.

Another small update today. got rid of the missles under the seat thing and now have an extra 2,000 tris or so for more stuff. Not looking forward to texturing, but will take a stab at it.

Buzzy - Thanks, and yes, I'm countin' my triangles proper. ;) Not quite half, but I do have a solid third of that 10k in the wheels. Four wheels accounting for a collective 3424 triangles at the moment. I tend to optimize pretty heavily as I go, which can be a blessing and a curse, when I get to the end, and I need more triangles, its often difficult to scrounge up more than a handful.

The UV on your bike looks pretty good, doesn't appear to be much stretching. Looking forward to those textures when you get them far enough along to show.

Tetsuya - That's wicked. I really dig how it opens up to "protect" the rider. I don't think I've noticed it before, but the arms holding the the wheels are really slick as well. This is going to be ace when you get it finished up.

CaseyD2K - Thanks, nuthin' special tho, just police style push bars, but I liked the look of 'em. :)

McKronic - Thanks, that windshield was a bit of a pain, but I think it was worth it in the end. :) I'm looking forward to seeing what you do, shouldn't need to be a whole lot, a little can go a long way in the silhouette sometimes.

tb1alexc - Thanks. I'll be half way down the track before your driver manages to let the clutch out on the big ol' beast of yours tho. ;P

I like some of what you've done with rebuild, I'd really like to see you bring back the fenders from the old version tho. Somehow, it feels a bit exposed without them. I dig the new front bump, that's pretty mean lookin.

theaquarianspac - Can't see anything to crit. I like the new front lower bumper, looks good.

Figured, I should put up a wireframe for all you doubters. ;P
9816 triangles, I know, there's quads there, but I do triangulate the mesh to check my count, don't worry. ;)

theaquarianspac: Cheers buddy, yeah being run over by eight wheels would probably hurt. I really like where yours is going at the moment. Are you going to use smoothing on it?

Warlock: Thanks mate, yeah I think you'll have a slightly better 0-60mph time than I would! have a look at this update, is that any better? Your car looks awesome as usual, I can't believe how few tris you've got on a model that looks that good... What will you be using the extra 10k tris for? Some huge weapons?

Here's a quick update, have added a few things (some of which can't be seen, for example there is now a small ladder at the back for the driver to get into the cab) and some 'bullet guards' for the wheels. I like where it's going, and I've got around 3.5k left for any extras. What do you folks think?

tb1alexc: spikes on the front grill along with the horizontal bars could definetely get some extra triangles pumped into them. You could chamfer some of the hard corners very slightly so when you light this baby the light will catch on the corners/edges better. Other than that it looks pretty solid to me.

funkdelic - Thanks. :) I don't know about "super" but I try to do my best.

tb1alexc - You know, I think those fenders did the trick. Looks not quite as exposed as it had. I think some bevels would help in places, like FrZnChAoS suggested, if you're using a normal tho, you probably won't need them. If you were looking for one more thing to add, perhaps some forward facing spikes on the grill, for impaling things it doesn't crush.

Nope, a lot of that 10k went into the interior, and nope, no big weapons, couple small machine guns will suffice for me. :)

Darchand - Not bad, a little flat tho, I hope you've got a little more variation planned for the real textures tho. Does have a good bit of attitude like hulahuga said.

Update on mine, got a big chunk of the interior done. 16k and some odd triangles total now. Got the roll cage done, finally, it's not pretty, but it'll do.

lampshadehead:: looks pretty cool, are you done texturing? cause it looks like a few pieces on your chain gun are just solid color diffuse. im not familiar with blender so cant really give you any rendering advice. if it has some kind of reflection map would be helpful.

Warlock279: looks sweet. you have any weapons planned or it going on just racing aspects alone?

tb1alexc: yea, i agree chamfers are a pain to remove. looks like you tightened up the model that next little bit.

heres a render of my texture map so far. pretty sure im going to throw in the trash though since the palette reminds me of tree bark lol. thinking i want a fleshy juicy kind of look instead. this is without normal maps applied, just pure diffuse. any tips for creating fleshy textures would be appreciated. the vehicle map is pretty much a 20 minute job at this point.

lampshadehead - Not a bad start, I think your base colors work alright. Looking forward to what you come up with for the textures. For your lighting, while its not specific to Blender, this link (http://www.andrew-whitehurst.net/3point.html) might help you some. Its just a basic 3 point lighting set up, its simple, but it's effective, and can be tweaked for some really nice results. Its what I usually use for lighting now-a-days.

FrZnChAoS - Weapons, couple small machine guns, nothin' fancy, toyed with some other ideas, but machine guns seem to fit the feel of my vehicle the best.

Before you scrap your textures, play with the hue/saturation of what you've got, maybe you'll stumble onto something that does work without having to repaint a whole lot. First thing that comes to mind for tutorials for this type of thing would be Marcus Dublin's Paragalis (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=61544&highlight=paragalis).

[B]Tetsuya - I've got nothing to say but that looks sweet. I cannot wait to see it all wrapped up.

Martin_x - That's a pretty nice looking tire you've got.

with less than two weeks left, I'm asking myself why I haven't unwrapped my ride yet. The answer, I have no idea.

...with less than two weeks left, I'm asking myself, why on earth am I still modeling this stupid car, I should have been texturing a week ago. And I thought I was gonna make a vehicle AND a character, ha, who was I kidding.

tb1alexc - Unwrap looks pretty good, Nicely packed so far. Also, your latest update, does appear you might have reposted an older pic.

Buzzy - Nice work on the chrome and the heat discoloration. I'm not sure on the red either. It might work tho, since your characters got the red bandanna on already.

Hope you riders got wheels on his boots, because I'm not seeing anywhere for him to put his feet while riding? [Perhaps you've just got the foot rests turned off in this shot, in which case, please disregard my comment.]

McKronic - Nice! Yeah, you didn't need to do much to it I don't think, just a couple little tweaks should have been enough. Tho textures are really nice. Joseph already hit my only crit, and that's the glass, could use some transparency and some dirtying up while you're at it.

BiG ToE-3DT - Nice start. Is it me, or are some of the paint chipped areas looking a little blurry? I think you could add some duck tape in your textures, to further push that "barely held together" look, which you've got working for ya very nicely so far.

ianchaos - UV looks pretty good, now for some speedy texturing aye?

katana - Thanks. I was wondering what happened to your vehicle, hadn't seen any updates on it in awhile. :(

Novian - Door handles?!?! Nonsense! Doors on race cars don't open. The doors are welded shut, and the handles are "shaved" as they'd be of no use anyway. I'm all about the climbing in and out the window thing, which I may or may not have sealed with a piece of glass possibly complicating that process. ;P

Everyone's entries are looking awesome so far!

Warlock, looks great as usual. When do we get to see textures? :D

Buzzy: Looks fab! Any more details going into there?

Ianchaos: Looking very nice, can't wait to see your textures!

Katana, thats a shame dude. It was a great model too.

Big Toe: Nice, almost cartoony in a way! I trust that was the look you're going for?

Lampshadehead: Nooooo! Damn, I so wanted to see that big-ass smart car! Never mind, see you next time!

If there's anyone I've forgotten... forgive me, it's late! Off for some more texturing now...

tb1alexc That's some really nice texture work.

tb1alexc - Hey now, those textures turned out pretty good. I like the little "east dust" on the one fender. Only two crits I've got are a], the tread on the tire seems like it should wrap down on to the side a little more; b] You need a fill light on there [doesn't need to be too bright at all], set about from where the camera is, so we can see your model better. Right now it seems like most of your light is coming from behind the model, casting the front into darkness, especially with the dark textures. Anyhow, nice work, it turned out pretty cool.

Textures from me? Hopefully by the deadline, I' wouldn't hold my breath tho I'm afraid.

Don't s'pose any one would believe I was going for a race inspired paint scheme would ya? No? Didn't think so, guess I'll need to come up with some proper textures then. ;p

All UV'd and packed.....finally. Every checker is 16 pixels of texture space. Weighs in at 18840 triangles now, 1x 2048² and 4x 1024² maps.

BiG ToE-3DT: pretty damn sweet loving the stylized look

Buzzy: badass bike man, love the look of the welds on the pipes

ianchaos: curious to see what your doing with those textures dude, are you going to save it for your final post?

tb1alexc: now that's a heap of texture maps lol it looks good though a little on the dark side but that could be my monitor perhaps?

warlock: going for gold again haha, time is a little tight for texturing so you will definitely have to crack down, good luck!, how did you manage to get your uv's so perfect?

So here I am...the down forum was a bummer, but it wouldn't have mattered. I couldn't be more happy with the way this model went. I found that I was able to identify problems quickly and solve them. I still have the undercarriage, rocket mount, twin .50 cals for the gunner, lights, and various other details to do, but my count is good for that...so I will continue. I also noticed while scanning my projects that I have finished several models that are finished or near so and even one unwrapped. I think what seems to work for me is not to get to involved with several projects, but to bring each one to an end point, similar to an assembly line. Afterwhich i will treat the sculpting phase and the texture phase the same way...anyway, crits welcome as always and good job to everyone.

Great entries - glad to see them in spite of the bad link (although it wasn't that difficult to get where you needed).
tb1alexc: the textures looked great on your texture sheet - just couldn't see them on your model.
warlock: please share the finished product some day:)

Another comp. down.

katana / Chung Wong / hulahuga / McKronic - Thanks guys. Unfortunately time proved too tight for me to get very far with the textures, barely made a first pass on things by the time the deadline rolled around.

Chung Wong, I wouldn't say the UV's are flawless I did have to change a couple things once I started texturing, mainly due to having out thought myself on some of the seams, particularly the nose of the car.

McKronic, mostly just time to get them like that. Once you start to get on to where to put the seams, just about any relax tool will start giving you pretty good results, then its just a matter of packing it. I did end up spending the better part of two days packing these tho.

Since you guys were discussing packing UV's a page or two ago, I figured I'd throw together some images of the route I went while packing mine, for anyone that's interested. [Warning 5000+ pixels tall, only 600kb tho, sorry 'bout the size :o]

katana - Your car's looking really solid, just need to get that front end square away and I think you're set.

That's an interesting take on the workflow, sounds like it would alright if you can handle that much of each phase at one time. I know if I spend more than a week or two away from modeling I get anxious to start modeling something.

Joseph Pomeisl - I certainly will get it up somewhere for everyone to see. :) I'm shooting to get it done before War, barring that, I'll probably end up finishing it up War when I need a break from my War entry. You need to get your car finished up as well, you're driver turned out great.

Alas...I was truly sad that I too did not get to finish this comp. It was a lot of fun on both ends, the driver and the vehicle, but in the end it got the best of me. I plan on posting both finished piece in the low poly thread soon.

On the plus side the reason i didn't finish the thread was a pretty hectic couple of days as a result of me getting a new job! I was recently hired by an up and coming game studio as a Texture Artist and I will be starting the first Monday in March! I was presented with the opportunity to work with several industry veterans whose work expands from Halo 2 to Television to Hollywood!

So i am sad I didn't finish but I really feel like I got the opportunity to push my self more than i have in the past. Hopefully I will get to partciipate again in future comps!

I suppose that's an acceptable reason for not finishing, this time. Don't let it happen again tho! ;p

Seriously...congrats on the job, best of luck with it. :)
