View Full Version : THE Sculpting Challenge: Suggestions for future topics!

Hello Everyone,

I'm always asking people if they have suggestions for future topics in the individual challenge threads and then losing track of everyon'e brilliant feedback ... So I figured: What better than to start a thread dedicated to future Speed Sculpting Challenge topics?

So here it is; please feel free to post ideas/suggestions/feedback here! We'll check in on this thread to see if there are any gems amongst the suggestions and we'll create briefs out of them for you if we think the majority will enjoy the topic.

Suggestions also for base meshes are also useful! For example: do you prefer the real simple start-from-a-cube/sphere challenges as opposed to start from a pre-defined busts/objects? All feedback will be interesting and helpful!

Thanks everyone, looking forward to reading everyone's suggestions!

Cheers :)

shields
cupid (for valentines day)
arms
decaying terrain/columns/walls/buildings, something non-organic.

it would be cool to do a bust sculpt again of some sort. but including a real human bust base mesh would be nice. i like the starting from cubes/spheres idea, but it feels like, especially for something like a face, i am fighting the technology more than my skill, since i cant subdivide all that high.

hey mdale13, I like your arms suggestion ... it's making me wonder if we could have an anatomy challenge every now and again - choose parts of the body and sculpt them in really super cool detail? I mean, we could even keep it as simple as supplying a reference image/photo/drawing and everyone try their hardest to sculpt "the best". it would totally be devoid of imaginative creativity, but fantastic for developing sculpting skill and getting to grips with proportions etc...

I think bust sculpts when we provide the human proportioned character base mesh are great because you can jump straight into the sculpting work and not have to worry about starting from scratch - after all, these challenges are pretty short...

that's another thing open to suggestions: sculpting times. too long? too short? let us know what you think!

your other suggestions are also great; we've been thinking about non-organic challenges for a while but it's just getting the right topic isn't it ... definitely one to keep in mind! we were thinking thrones, altars - that kind of thing. so yep, non-organic suggestions also welcome!

basically, if people just throw their ideas into this thread then we'll always have something to check out and ponder over when we come to start the next challenge, so it's good for us, and you never know: you might even see your challenge suggestion up in the top news bar soon before you know it :)

self-portraits maybe? that may be cool.
tombstones
zombies
portraits of existing famous people (you provide the base mesh, we provide the image of the person we are sculpting. the perception of who is "famous" differs greatly from person to person so it would be good to have an image to compare)

maybe we could have a sort of mega challenge sometime. longer time frame, bigger prizes, more open base mesh.

i think for these short challenges, 5 hours is a sweet spot. i found myself done with the majority of the sculpting at 4 hours, and that final 1 hour was great to have to tweak stuff and add details.

really liked the challenges started with the bust-manimal-angelic-cartoon
So something in the line of that.

Maybe a piece of script and choose a character to model..

show an environment and we have to model an character who might live there(sewer, in a tower ,on top of an mountain etc)

create a family member of a well known movie character (sister E.T. Mother of Dobby etc)

piece art where the head is erased-we have to fill it in

mdal13-zombies are always good

the ideas out there already are pretty sweet, I also like the 5 hour time frame.

Celebrity
--(realistic or caricatured)
Animal bust
-- (realistic or cartoony)
Detailed weapon
--(Lord of the rings - the elven swords were super intricate, the orc ones had so much damage and shoddy construction. could be fun recreating that)
Robots!!!
--(may be too difficult with simple basemesh...)
Helmets/masks
--(from gladiator helms to tribal masks, could be interesting)

Not very original but what about: monsters?

Maybe more orignal: Haircut?

Anatomie contest like arms, legs, Hands, feet etc, should be a great challenge too.

Lynette-3dt

Very much like the Helmets/Masks idea! Nice one!

We're all discussing these suggestions over in a secret part of the forum where the forum staff get together and work out how to make things bigger and better for everyone, so do please keep 'em coming so we can keep on checking this thread for more ideas! :)

especially a piece of script idea, to choose a character from storyline would be very interesting challenge, :)

and also liked to create a family member or relatives of famous characters idea. :)

i like the arms idea, or body part idea. we could do a whole series, like arms now, legs next time, torso after that, feet and hands, then some head busts. if you focus on one part at a time, the details could be much greater.

All good ideas I reckon!
The anatomy topic could also extend to animal and plant too.

How about a Carnivale, Freakshow, Fairground topic?

I used to help come up with topics for a weekly art challenge on my college's forum. We used to use a random text generator to create a topic. You could choose how many words, whether they were nouns, adjectives etc. The topics were abstract but very open for interpretation. It was interesting to see how differently people interpreted the same phrase. The only problem would be if this style proves difficult for non-native english speakers.
An example of a different (the ones I used to use are no longer active) random text generator is:

http://www.seventhsanctum.com/generate.php?Genname=quicktheme
Example: - Setting: cyberpunk/western. Theme:man-against-the-world/metamorphosis story

I'm sure there's plenty of other similar sites available
Just an idea

2.dragon child cant tell his reknowned and veneered father that he just flunked dragon academy flying exams?(just a simple 2 dragon sculpt ,the childs approach and conveying possibilties shud be the high light)
3.lynnete maams bday party wth cake off course XD ( imagine the scene)
4. what would a hairless were wolf kid fell when mocked at school.

oh i like the chess pieces as living beings, aby arty, i kind of worked on that a little a while back. With that said:

1.Demons and fallen angels...if you actually look up demons, there is a list of MANY of them. Creative freedom is open and they are always interesting. This not only informs but provides a great challenge! Take a gander.

2. Humans infused with objects or machine.

clothing sounds interesting, alot of zbrush work ive seen is nude, which i think is because clothing wrinkles are hard to get right, but a clothing competition would be good practice, and to see everyones wrinkle workflow would be usefull.

hmm. I wonder if we could do something silly, like take 3 random photos of people off Google (or wherever - could be photos of friends, colleagues, or even the 3DTotal staff - eek!), and cut those 3 photos into horizontal strips, separating the eyes, nose and mouth (I can do an example if no-one gets me ;)). and then: sculpt it!

I used to do this for paintings back in college (a loooong time ago) using photos from magazines and you can get some pretty cool results - surprisingly! using PS you can scale the photos up/down to get a good face shape, too ... perhaps you could even use animals, and mix men/women, adults/children ... ? just a thought anywho! :)

I would like more simple themes. Like:

a bust of a......

· Gangsters of the thirties
· cyborg kid
· Monsters from MIB
· Alien house pet

six hours sculpt time
and two own simple base meshes for accessory

3)a wood modellers shack (scene)
4) hidden treasure uncovered ( scene)
5) most artistic hairdo (well have lots of hair practice :) )

ya i know all above ones are inorganic, coz i feel we need a change from the manotany of organic an faces seriously. scenes base meshes can be primitives placed like in a room thats all.

1)the kiss
2)dance
3)a treat at pizza hut (mmmm XD)
4) the lost city
5) towards paradise riding on a camel

these are expression based ,scenes mostly , but they are more organic than above .

1)fishermen
2)rockstar
3) archaeologist
4)entrepeneur
5) cobbler
6) the jet pilot
7) soldier(the huge hulk type , wth game like styling , somone ho can use rocket launcers wth one hand )

15)kungfu teacher/ sensei (yeah something hotter than the third in naruto)

these are profession based, or role based, these are broader concepts.well if patient these cud awesome scenes too.

oh lol i can go on and on , ill cut off the list here , coz if its too much lyn maam will sleep again XD.

would like to hear everyones feedback on these

Just had another thought on a couple of other possible topics:

1) Sculpt the animal that you'd want to be reincarnated as (real not fantasy).
2) Gods. Only 'real' 'existing' ones from actual religions (buddah, jesus, ganesh etc).
3) Kick arse magical/powerful weapons.

I'm sure some of these topics have already be touched on but just thought I'd keep the ideas flowing.

2)railway
3)bees vs bears (yup! over honey)
4)pokemon. seriously i dnt know why u guyz hate it. its got so much potential ,u cud just use human characters if not the pokemon.
5)inventions of dreams. ( umm flying shooz fr eg.)
6)hands ( lets see who can use this the best)
7)kerem beyit ( lol dnt run away ! i know hes a detail monster but sculpting his works would be a cool excersize.)
8)artix entertainment's characters maybe.
9) anime (i know dbz fans will be unleased XD)
10) butchers
11) General Blastall ( yay lol this guy got a gep gun)

Hi aby arty, thanks for all your suggestions :)

1 - scenes or multiple characters: I think the reason we haven't gone for this (yet) is that it could be too detailed/difficult for a speed sculpting challenge, but we'll certainly keep it in mind anyway

2 - railway: do you mean a railway scene, such as sculpting a train, the tracks, the station? I'm a bit confused - I think sculpting just a railway track would be a bot boring, hehe

3 - bees bs bears: Winne the pooh? hehe! Erm, this topic is very specific; perhaps if we had something a little more open, like something along the lines of a battle between a big land animal and a small flying insect, then we might be onto something...

4 - pokemon: hmm, well the reason this isn't perhaps loved is because pokemon is already a highly stylised subject so there is not alot of room for manouvre for those who aren't into that style. It's a niche subject really, that would not appeal to the masses.

5 - Inventions of dreams: not quite sure what you mean by this? Do you mean inventions that people dream about creating, like a robot that makes me my breakfast? let us know what you're thinking

6 - Hands: I think some subjects like sculpting body parts would be great - a bit like a sculpting class, where we all sculpt a reference or something would be good, and the best, most accurately detailed wins!

7 - Kerem Beyit: I think it's best to allow artists to create their own unique characters, rather than using someone else's artwork as a concept.

...I'm finishing my lunch now so going to stop this reply before it gets mega huge and boring. Feel free everyone else to join in and give your comments and suggestions! :)

@Lynette-3dt :1) nah theyll enjoy it. theres a lot of room in a scene to go crazy u know.

2)oh i just ment a train ! pp can do extra if the time limit and basemess allow.

3)all people dnt make same bees and bear i guess .

4)493 creatures and along wth many human characters is what u call niche.
hmm thank god ken sugimori aint reading this lol poor old man wud have heartbreak.

5)yeah ur on right track ,but u got of on an early station :p. just kiding . u r right.

6)yep i have been saying the sim. may be uhave mod effect ;):D

7) umm i thought all 3d artist dnt concept themselves. and all concept artist dnt model themselves.
that is why i said lets try to replicate kb's awesomeness.

aaw u got stingy here i wrote 12, u respond 7 . more please, u respond damn good ,it helps me a lot.

haha, yeah i came to the end of my lunch at #7 and wanted to get back to work, but will have a read of your posts again later on and will reply again ;)

just a couple of points though: sure, modellers in the industry model, and concept artists create concepts, but you'll get a long way if you can come up with your own concepts and designs for your own models! it also saves problems of copyrights when you want to come and sell a 3D illustration for example; if you've used an existing concept by someone else then you wouldn't have the permissions to do that, you see. so ... i think it's good for us to encourage people to come up with their own concepts :)

when i said "niche" for the pokemon i didn't mean not many people like it (i used to watch it religiously a few years ago, hehe), i just meant that it terms of modelling/sculpting, then the style of model is very particular, and it wouldn't be good for encouraging creativity in that respect. I think the challenges work well when they allow people to use their creativity and make some really unique work! for example, pokemon worked well when we did the real-life cartoon challenge, as someone represented pikachu (i think) in their own way; however, as a whole challenge on pokemon ... i don't think it would really work. but, i have been proven wrong on many occasion, so this is just my personal opinion :)

will reply again soon ...

ok, here we go:

8)artix entertainment's characters maybe - again, i think this would only work like in the pokemon suggestion sense: it could work in a broad topic such as real life cartoon, but I think it's too specific for a whole challenge to be based on it. again, just my own opinion! ;)

9) anime (i know dbz fans will be unleased XD) - I think this could work!

10) butchers - we had this as a topic on the 2d stylised challenge (over on Conceptart.org) and it was very popular, so ... it could work! It would be cool to add props and see what people come up with.

11) General Blastall ( yay lol this guy got a gep gun) - who is this? hehe

12 )umm babes XD ( sry got carried away ) - time for a cold shower? hehehe ;P I guess the pinup topic would cover this one :)

wow, your past post was huuuuge! ok, let's have a go at a reply...

1)futuristic car - yep, like it!
2)"Reebok wants u to design their next premium sneaker, and they want u to go crazy" - I would like it if it was a made-up label or something; i'm never keen on using brands and stuff due to copyrights, but something to keep in mind for sure!
3)a wood modellers shack (scene) - yep, this could work - not sure what the popularity would be, but it would be good to do more inorganic stuff!
4) hidden treasure uncovered ( scene) - again, this could work - maybe with some props, too?
5) most artistic hairdo (well have lots of hair practice ) - this could be fun! maybe we give a base mesh of a finished head and everyone just does the hair? hmm, interesting ...

Lynette-3dt
20-05-2009, 01:05 PM
1)the kiss - is this the classic painting you're talking about, or just kissing?
2)dance - ermm, i guess this could work? might take more than a speed sculpt if doing a full figure - not sure...
3)a treat at pizza hut (mmmm XD) - errmmmmm, not sure on this one ... you hungry?
4) the lost city - this might be fun, but could be alot of work for a speed sculpt if it's an entire city!!
5) towards paradise riding on a camel - ermmm ... would people model the camel and the person on it? not sure ...

1)fishermen - sure, why not, this could work
2)rockstar - ... and this
3) archaeologist ... erm, might be a bit of a boring one (no offence to archeologists, just not sure what defining features would make this fun to sculpt!)
4)entrepeneur - as above
5) cobbler - i guess this could work...
6) the jet pilot - this would be great if we give props for the glasses and hat - i'm thinking a cool retro open aircraft pilot!!
7) soldier(the huge hulk type , wth game like styling , somone ho can use rocket launcers wth one hand ) - yep, definitely; we did super solider before didn't we? so perhaps this has already been covered...
8)the clown - yep, could work!
9)the ice skater lady - again, would be a full body sculpt, similar to the dance suggestion I guess
10)sorceress (emphasis on clothing ) - yep, could work!
11)dragon king (bored) sitting on his throne ,and hear his ministers blabber ... very specific, let's just go with the dragon we're doing now, and maybe we can consider king for the future?
12)the mafia - this would be cool!!!
13)doctor - see my comments on archeologist. now surgeon would be different - could have props and a cool expression! but doctor is kinda dull...
14)scuba diver - yup, good one!
15)kungfu teacher/ sensei (yeah something hotter than the third in naruto) - yeah, this could work too - similar to the dance and ice skting onces where they'd be full body poses, i guess...

1)no just kissing
2) umm yeah these 5 are all scenes.
3)just having pizza wth frends scene. (if the treats on u then iam ):D
4)we could gve 16 hr time i guess

----------------------------------------------
i see all profession based wer enjoyed by u.

umm archaelogist is so dam cool u just dnt let ur mind wander:
1.a dinosaur ( mistaken for corps e but not) bites the head reseercher butt after being taken out.
2. the team is scraping out jewels from the lavish tom walls. and suddenly a lady sees thereflection of the mummy checng the m out. X
3.the researchers are partying coz they think they found trace of a lost civ.
but actually its a part of the UFO that distroyed the civ , hahaha.

see!! an this is not all thats possible.

Hi Aby Arty, sorry we don't agree on all topic suggestions - don't get me wrong when I say "specific"; what I mean is that I think the challenge may be better with a wider topic.

Anyways, I'm thinking what might be cool at some point (Freespace what do you think to this?) is running a survey of all the viable sugestions we've had so far, to see what everyone thinks? Everyone loves a good survey :D

aby arty
21-05-2009, 03:17 PM
@lyn maam :no no thats what i mean , we gotta make it wider.

and ur a goddess of stingies, my post was huge u said 4 lines only hmf.
:p

a new idea : lyn mams fabled coffe is furious at her, why? oh coz she slept on her keyboard ,after drinking the cofee( the cofee considers self royality), so her cofee feels she insulted it.

we can sculpt faces in the mug ,and show a caricaturistic lin maam ,in heads down.

this ought to be the idea for scene sculpting debut , what say lyn mam :p

survey ?? hmm , tha kills the fun of developing new ideas dnt know, it depends how the survey , maker does it.

Lynette-3dt
21-05-2009, 03:35 PM
errrrrrrrrmmmmmmm ...

I'm a Goddess of stinginess? hahaha! I like it, I might make that my official title, haha

The new idea ... hmmm, it is unique, I give you that! We've thought about doing Stylised 3DTotal Staff before - it would be terrifying for us, but I guess you've gotta leanr to laugh at yourselves hey?

Surveys don't spoil the fun, they just help to work out how many people like the ideas already suggested! So what I mean is, we run a survey where people can choose their favourites of the topics already suggested. Get it?

aby arty
21-05-2009, 03:56 PM
yeah i get it is just "making sure people vote" trick. coz voting in a thread can take ages.

survey wud be taken by more ppl i guess.

the idea: any way whats the worry? u have ur head down ! ur face wont be seen, though ull have ur mr. cofee yelling at u beside ur ear, lol.

the best thing here is , it is mix of both organic and inorganic.

and yes i have been repetedly requesting and suggesting new set of emoticons, but the mods semm to keep ignoring it.
please put this up in the next team meeting.

if the whole board needs upgrade thn tell us in advance how many days threedy be down?

about learning to laugh on self , go see post 81 in speed painting ideas, ull get the hint.

Lynette-3dt
21-05-2009, 04:00 PM
we have plenty of emoticons at the mo - don't think we need anymore just yet, but if we do upgrade the forums again then I'll ask if we can have some new ones, too

i think the challenge idea is ... one for the backburner. it just wouldn't be very interesting, i'm sure we can come up with more exciting ideas :)

will check out the speed painting post...

all the best

:haha: what you think of a contest to be a mythological invented by each participant? for example: each will do a new be based on the idea of monster. and how the ideas are many, the site could provide 3 basic model to mesh with monsters like snakes or sea monsters, Monsters quadruped like chimera and biped like ciclops and giants.

but, can make all type of monster. not only chimera, sea monster, ciclops or giants

Sorry my english!!!!! hehe

Write the word you want to link up, select it with your cursor, and then click on the "Insert Link" icon in the message tool bar (the one with the little Earth symbol and what looks like a paper-clip on ot). It brings up a box you can then write the web link into. Hit ok, and you're done!

Something inspired by Jules Verne could be awesome, but I would not want it to be a full illustration, or a complete scene. I think having too complex themes breaks the base idea of "Speed Sculpting". I think this current challenge has already gone too far, with the 8 hours limit. To me something complex like a full illustration in 3d should be a full contest, with no time limit.

2)puss in the boots
3)pinochio
4)goldilocks and 3 lil bears
5) jack and the bean stalk
6)red riding hood

General:
1)what if ur spouse has to be a diff species, how do u see them?
2)monsters of our childhood stories, styluzed, Seksily dressed.
3)gourgeousest bedroom
4)yoga and meditation
5)umm if god designed us wth a wacom?

@pedro sir : how abt a month long challenge , 90 hrs duration, sculpt 3 hrs daily.

I don't have issues about long lasting contests, I just don't think they fit the Speed Sculpting criteria.

Your idea could be cool for anyone who has this kind of time available. I find it very difficult to have three hours a day to do any personal work.
When I have three hours a week is already a lot, and that's why I preffer the really short Speed Sculpt challenges. 3 or 4 hours (five the most).

But that's just me. :)

@ liquid haha lol aint she too blue?

@pedro sir: actually my idea was abt when u said long durations shud be for different challenge altogether, so i gave what the other challenge cud be.

now for the speed sculpt , i agree busy people will find it taxing on their time.
but i believe there are exception who do a winning entry in a fraction of the time given, thts why i said long hours are fine.

now to rectify this imbalance , what we can do is provide diferent levels of a basemesh which will have a duration attached to it .

so every one can use the basemesh accrding to their time cmmtments.

what say freespace sir ?

Freespace-3DT

hmm sir we cud make different threads for different duration ppl may be.

or else , its just that those who dont want more than 6 hrs challenge , they can try final it out in 6 in more than 6 hrs challenge.

like if one dsnt have 8 hrs , he shud take out 8 hrs wrk in as many hrs he goton his hand.

theyll just have to sculpt fast or well have to disect the challenge.

The challenges last a month, and time limit is 8hrs. I assume this is to give folks plenty of time to jump on board, which I think is great. But when it comes to getting a job, I think employers might see speed sculpting as a parlor trick. They want to see finished work.

Not to discount the validity or importance of being able to knock something out quickly, but I'd love to see the sculpting challenges be less speed-based and more quality-based. Challenges, for me anyway, are a great vehicle to create solid personal portfolio work: A deadline is imposed by someone else, there are constraints, etc, it's great. Something that took few weeks to make is going to be much more portfolio worthy than an 8hr speed sculpt.

That said, I know these challenges are for fun. I'm not trying to take away from that, I'm simply saying that if they were more quality over speed based, they could be fun and also have the added benefit of giving people some nice work for their portfolios. I suppose one could always continue to work on a sculpt after the speed-sculpt challenge is over, to bring it to a finish, but I like the idea of being able to potentially tack an award graphic to a finished piece.

I can think of a few ways to implement it:

1) Two separate categories (speed sculpt and long sculpt) for every sculpting challenge. For example the Dragon challenge would have had a speed sculpt and a long sculpt thread, with different constraints.

2) Two separate categories (speed sculpt and long sculpt) with their own challenges. For example the speed sculptors could be working on dragons while the long sculptors are working on something different.

3) Alternate challenges between speed and long sculpting.

4) Require speed sculpts to be part of the beginning conceptualization part of longer sculpting challenges, to teach people how to use ZBrush and Mudbox as conceptual tools as well as finishing tools. For example you make a long Dragon sculpting challenge, but require 5 minimum different conceptual speed sculpts with a 1hr cap on each.

I like #4 best. I think it's most useful from a career standpoint. Personal opinion :)

Those are some great points, Dustin. We have discussed them among the staff since the challenges begun over a year ago. I'm going to take note of these for our future meetings, though we still don't want to overcomplicate it with the challenges ( too many sub-categories tends to alienate people; and most people who participate in these can only spare so many hours of their free time )

The quality over speed notion can still be implemented by anyone. After you finish up your speed sculpt within the time limit and submit the images of it in the final thread, you can merrily keep detailing and finishing your sculpt for portfolio purposes. So if someone did a dragon in 8 hours ( for example ), and they feel the sculpt can still be worked on, nobody is stopping them from doing so for their portfolio.

liquidbear

too many sub-categories tends to alienate people

I agree but maybe one more section for longer sculpts and speed sculpts to give more people a chance to show of there skills .

Some people might be really good at making models really fast and other may be more inclined to take more time and care into sculpts making them more personal and detailed

long story short freespace was right wth the 8 hours duration for the dragons weteher ya like it or not, but the second thing wch i also felt awkward was why wasnt the base mesh a cube?

i think a basemesh wth more scope is more suitable for a long duration sculpt, and besides every one cant get hang of transpose if they entering for frst time.and also no one tried legless dragons cause taking out the legs wasnt wvery ones cup of tea. u see?

maybe after few months we can do dragon v2.0 wth a cube :)

so, what's up with the new chalenge??

darkmonk
19-06-2009, 11:58 AM
I also preffer having a simple base mesh to sculpt from, my computer does not handle many subdivisions so anything that helps the flow of polygons to all the different areas of the sculpt is always good for me.
i dont think we would have seen as many fantastic sculps in the dragon contest if the basemesh had been a cube and it also makes things even more difficult for begginers to get started sculpting.

I also like having a short time limit as it forces me to work outside of my comfort zone and i have to try/learn new techniques to improve how i sculpt different forms and details.

Would also like to comment on something dustinbrown mentioned in a post.
"I think employers might see speed sculpting as a parlor trick"

Being able to sculpt a very detailed model in a short period of time shows that the person has a very good grasp of the program he is using and also of the forms he is trying to create, if 2 different people can create equally good models but 1 person takes a day and the other takes an hour who do you think will be hired ? -this is just my opinion by the way :D

Cant wait for the next challenge, hope to see as many entries as there were in the dragon comp:)

yes freespace sir i prefer cube for lengthy challenges , cause cube has more scpe for smthng to be done on it.

about it being hard , well if we have the freedom to give our own form its easier.

I have to say I have trouble enough finding the time to finish an 8 hour speed sculpt before the deadline, let alone a longer sculpt.
This said I would never begrudge people a longer sculpt as I would love to see the results!!
Please keep the speed sculpts to the 4 or 8 hour as it takes me that long just to get started but as SEAL has commented it might be a good idea to have a concept speed sculpt section for longer sculpts.
Bring on the next challenge!!!

yeah, I've got to agree with gumby666 on this one, the thing I've enjoyed with the ssc's is the fact that I actually might have time to participate, between work and all the other crap one has to get done. Two other advantages to this way of doing things are 1: you get to quickly try out an idea and its main forms, without necessarily getting bogged down with thinking about the dude's skin pores, and 2: it kind of forces you to learn how to streamline your work process, which will be invaluable when you start actually working in the business (I'm guessing there is a good amount of younger, aspiring artists on this forum looking to be prepared for entering this line of work).

That said, I do agree with SEAL DENİZ's second suggestion that it might work great if we could have it both ways, with another section for longer term challenges. We could probably all need some new portfolio pieces every once in a while, where the ssc concepts often can't do the trick

About this, I've said before and some ssc participants have done a wonderful job at it: once you're done with your sculpt for the challenge, it's yours to take it further than the ssc timelimit allows. And there's also a slight change in the following challenge, that people might be really glad about.

I definitely agree with that, and it works out just fine just like it is in my opinion. I was just agreeing to one of SEAL DENİZ's suggestions, seeing it from his point of view if you like, as it seems that some kind of challenge or similar organized type of process works better for some people. You know, these kids today, no self discipline :p

Looking forward to the next one, and if its the exact same type of rules as always, I wouldn't mind that at all. Hope I'll actually have time to get into this one. Might have to go get me some of that swine flu so I get to stay home for a couple of days

SEAL DENIZ - Yeah I actually read that, just didn't notice that you were quoting him since you didn't put it in the quote frame thingy. My bad. The main thing I tried to convey was that I agree with gumby666 about having a hard time finding time for longer challenges, and that if something like that was to be done, that I hoped that the short format still would remain in some form.

But as previously stated, I like the ssc how it is now, and I'm excited to see what this slight change Freespace mentioned might be. And to make this post at all relevant to this thread, a topic suggestion :D : Terrors from the Deep, creatures from the deep blue sea. Personally, I think the shorter the better, if you are talking about Speed Sculpts. Just as a sketch challenge, it should be quick.

I think 4 hours is good enough for any sketch, longer than that, to me, is a full sculpt. I think it's fine to have full sculpts challenges, of course. And I would not give any time limit for those, but if we are talking about speed sculpts, about 3d sketches, then I am totally against long time limits.

EDIT: I could swear this used to be called Speed Sculpt Challenge!?! I just realized it isn't (anymore?) Am I crazy?!?!

I quite like the suggestion to have separate speed sculpt and detailed sculpt threads for each challenge actually, I'm gathering some thoughts from the mods on this one to see if we can work it into the challenge schedule in future.

We're going be streamlining our challenges in the near future so that everyone knows when the deadlines are, when they start, and what's going on. My Idea: Tutorial Challenges. Come up with a topic, as usual...say Head Sculpting Tutorial, or The Best Eyeball Tutorial Ever. The point being, not only would you be challenged to come up with a cool end product, but you would have incentive to share your techniques with the community. In my head I imagine you would get points for how cool the end product is, how well written and cohesive the written or spoken portion of the tutorial is, etc.

goast666

Junkyard. A rather broad topic that is open to quite a bit of interpretation but I think that will actually turn out the largest number of unique entries. Junkyard...is it a dog, the actual junkyard, someone working there, some piece of equipment, etc. It the junkyard from say Sanford and Son, or is it the City Dump? is it the 1800s or 2700s? Is it a whole planet?

My 2cents

Hmm...I just realized it's not the SSC anymore either. Hmmm. I have to agree with pedro on this one. When we're hitting the 8hr mark and such that's nearing finished piece. I really liked the last one (18) 6hrs really pushed me to try to get a "finished sculpt" in that amount of time. I like the idea of 4hrs better though. I don't really see me being able to put out much more than sketchy lines and big broad claytubes strokes and actually having them be in the finished piece. Hmmm. So to sum this up. I like what Seal was saying about having longer sculpting challenges...those not being speed or having any real time constraint to them...other than the deadline that is.

But I especially like having the "speed" aspect of it for these challenges. I encourage my students to take part in challenges to help hone their skills and give them more competition that the other people in class. I will directly pull homework assignments or give extra credit to my students that want to participate in a challenge. When the challenges are 4-8hrs I can justify giving them the SSC to complete and submit. If it's a 4-8wk challenge though I can't make them do it...well, I could, but they have my projects to work on as well (If they want to do a longer challenge I still throw down some extra credit though).

Anyway, I enjoy forcing my students to get actively involved in competitions on the web. Either here at 3dt, or over at GA, or polycount, or ZBC...anywhere. I've found the stiffer the competition the better they become (while they do bitch when great sculptors and character artists are their competition, Cedric S...sathe, marcus D...etc). I think it helps them to better understand that the competition for a job isn't open to just the people you have classes with, the competition is the people you compete against in challenges such as these.

Anyway...to make a long story short. Keep the Speed part so I can justify making my students participate rather than just giving out some ExtraCredit for willingly doing it.

If you have to waste time in the basemesh maybe 6 hours, if they provide us with a simple mesh to start to sculpt maybe 4 hours is nice. :) Waiting the next topic soon!

steban it would have to have a unified theme ... not much of a challenge if someone makes a squid dragon and someone made a goomba from mario it be unfair and impossible to judge

What about musician animals (one very good example in the last Digital Art masters where we can see in a toony style a crocodile playing saw and a lobster playing violin).

If we're going with the zombie thang can we make it just zombie portraits? Kinda got sick of looking at myself in the previous self portrait challenge.

Reckon there could be some killer ideas!! Zombie Arnie, Zombie Paris Hilton, Zombie George Bush....... hang on he's already a zombie, dead and buried!!!!

If you still wanna do a version of your self that'd be totally cool too!

P.S. sorry any GWB lovers out there. feel free to have a go at the Australian ex-prime minister.... if anyone can even remember who he was hehehe!

Did you guys enjoy the "supply your own base mesh" idea for the sculpting challenge, or not?

Also, we're going to start the big global challenges very soon, but I think we can squeeze a nice Halloween challenge in here. Did I hear something about zombies? :)

While I never got to do the last challenge, because of my desktops wonderfully crappy graphics card, I did enjoy the idea of creating your own base mesh. I can't wait to see what the global challenges will be. Until then. Brains:lurve:

1) jack o lanterns
2)zombies
3)vampires
4)werevolves
5)horror costumes
6)candies/ trick o treat
7)witches

i thnk pumkin monsters will be quiet cool

I largely prefer the challenge with already a bash mesh, we all start from the same point and consequently only our sculpting skills count. With our own base mesh you add skills on traditionnal 3D modelling soft, it's not only sculpting.

However with a supplied basemesh the subject can not not be as open as "Halloween" for example.

Jabberwock, your post put the problem perfectly in view.

Own basemesh - creative freedom;
Supplied basemesh - equal starting point; rigid workflow ( you can't add stuff, can't edit the basemesh topology, etc )

I'm thinking the rigid workflow is going to be harder to maintain with some of the tools in ZB 3.5 such as the sketch tools meaning that it is easier to add details prior to subdiv and I would imagine people will want to be able to use those tools when sculpting for the challenges. I could be wrong though!

Well my plan is to give you guys complete freedom in how you work through the challenges, hence the "supply your own basemesh" philosophy. I think the Videogame character challenge went great ( it wouldn't have been the same with predefined starting basemesh ), so the idea works.

I'm on the create your own base mesh band wagon. I actually think I learnt a lot more doing this in the last challenge (although it's all I got done :)). It really made me think about my workflow and character design a lot more!!

It also promotes greater discussion of individual methods and increases interaction and learning between people.

Bring on the zombie action!!! UUUUUUUURRRRRGGGGHHH!!!

Cool, I think this is a good idea.
As I mentioned before, I think there could be two separate time limits, one for the basemesh, one for sculpting, and if you wanted to use a pre-made basemesh you can only use the sculpting time limit.
I think this kind of approach would help the ones who don't want to spend time on polygonal modeling first, and also the ones who want to make their own custom base.

Not to mention softwares like 3DCoat, that simply doesn't have the basemesh concept at all, as you don't have polygons, just a vert cloud that does not obey to the same rules of the other sculpting packages...

have we had werewolves already?

hmm then i guess:
1) vampires
2)griffins
3)genies
4)gargoyles
5)bigfoot/sasquatch/yeti/snowman

soemething sequential:
domestic animals go to las vegas
switch mode of travel of human and one insect.

but to take out another meaning of ur words, i say you dnt mind other beings, u just dont want them monsters.

so we can do cute aliens , right?

Hey guys!

I don't know if it's been suggested yet - I know, I know;) - but I was thinking that maybe you could sometimes do something like the Dominance War mini challenge. Where we get one of three low poly busts, and sculpt whatever we want onto it? Or a few generic low poly prop models; either or. I know some people like characters, and some like environments. I think mixing it up is important.

I'm just starting to learn Zbrush, and I can say that it would be great to just have a model ready to sculpt, just for the practice. So I'm just throwing that out there - that was a cool mini comp too, as anyone who saw the results can tell:)
