Hi

i just finished a tutorial about skin tones, mostly is for ilustration and not 3D.

I used Painter 7 (with the painter classic brushes), but it can be applyed to photoshop as well.

I posted it originaly in the concept design forum, but ill post it in here too.

The tutorial is intended because ive been seeing in many forums that people are asking for help about "How can i make skin tones"

Well, there are many ways of aproaching the creation of skins allthough they are all related in prosses.

I personaly have a palette that i allways use, and it features colors that tend to go to grays, by that i mean, the shades wont go as bright as many other colors. (You can see my palette in the tuts last pic.

OK

I used the image of "MERO-APE" of this thread (concept design forum):

i mainly used it for FUN, but i desided to save my prosses from time to time so i could make a tutorial about skin.

This image / and the end result.

Note that i work at least 300% bigger, but in this case i worked at the current size of the image so the details are very low. and it took me about one hour to finish what i did.

1.- I use a basic color as base for the ilustration, even if its going to be entirely diferent in the end, by doing this it helps me materialize my ilustration and will make the colors easier to blend.

2.- I start defining some shapes, by this i use a little darker shade.

3.- Then i blend the colors with another color that is between the first clear color and the shadow color i used in step two, that way im adding more personality and density to the colors. I also start defining some areas like the nose, the eye, jaw and wrinkles.

4.- I define the light sourses and the shapes by introducing some highlights, this way itll start looking better and youll work less stressed as youll already be looking at your image taking shape ;)

5.- i keep adding more shadows and refining some more.

6.- I start creating more detail, in this case the mouth and i define with shadows the shape of the jaw.
Since he has a couple of objects in his face ill leave the strong shadows to the last, since i still dont know how exactly those objects are going to be....even if you have them drawn, its better to leave it till the end.

7.- Now im going to make the objects, look that i use the same prosedure i used with the face.

8.- I define some shapes of the tubes

9.- Added higlights, stronger shadows and definition.

10.- And i repeated all of the above to do the objects.
Note that it lacks in detail as i worked in a really small image, so the tools had their limits.

11.- And lastly the Shadows and stronger higlights. I also finished the eye.

Here is a sample of my palette.

An important note, Never.... NEVER use pinkish colors to do skins, use yellowish colors, you can however use oranges and red colors to define shadows in a really white person BUT with a brush with really low opasity since we want to add shades slowly in a controled manner...... really white people's skin is slightly yellow (never pink nor red).

Use only pinkish shades when you see a mussel directly (like a zomby without skin) or when there is a scar.

I used this same technic to make this image, ive allready finished this image, (though my real site is down at the moment and im using a shared site) so ill look this one up and post it next time.

Comments......Critts........allways wellcome.

Was This of use to you?

As a beginner I found this very informative. I'm sure I can adapt this for 3D, as far as colors and such are concerned....

Thanks for posting this.
