View Full Version : AVATAR - Comic - trashmito - Electrica

Greetings all!

I've been thinking about my avatar for a while now. The one I entering the contest with is not the first version. First I tended to do a creature close to nature, hunting, living with no worries. But I tought that is not what I want to do.
So my avatar is a super being, Electrica who is charged with electricity. Not only charged, but she radiates. She lives in a city witch is sealed on a planet with savage waists. One day Electrica came down from the sky as a tiny little girl, no one knows from where exactly, but the residents of the city saw her good intentions so they admitted her to their community. As she grew the people discovered the true nature of her destructive power. Anywhere she went, wrecked all the machines with her electromagnetic field. A craftmen taught about the problem, and made an armor witch increases Electrica's power, and also helps her to control it. Since then Electrica is able to fly and she became the protector of the city.
Except that she is a normal teenager, always smiling, always happy little girl. She like to sing and she really like little kids. Maybe she will play with them in the final picture ofcourse demonstrating her power in a friendly or funny way.
Her hair rising to the sky, because the electricity :).

Really nice sketches and inking :)

i have one question...did you made your sketch on paper or digitally?

trashmito
06-02-2009, 09:32 PM
Thank you guys! :)

I made my sketches on paper. The tool for the inking is isograph pen, but I had to vectorise the original, because I work in big size, so the lines would be lost otherwise.

trashmito

This sketch is a little more about armor design. I enlighted it a bit. Maybe it's still not the final version.
Size A3, tool: 0.35 mechanical pencil.

I love your armor design, especially in the part of the arms:)

...and you have a very clean line art, thats why i asked if you made the sketches digitally.

I'll continue to see your work
that is looking really good :D

as POSEIdOON mentioned, really great line art you've got there and the arm peace's looks frikking awsome.

trashmito

Okay, so here is todays process.
Steps:
1. I made a clear lineart of the previous picture.
2. Started to inking it.
3. Inking...
4. Inking...
5. Drawing some more...
6. Inking some more...
7. I was thinking more about the environment, and a strange idea came up: what if, the sealed city is a historical eclectic town under a huge dome. Well, I am living in a historical town so the inspiration is gerat. Just love old buildings :). The tought was followed by action, and I drew the most detailed environment I possibly could imagine. Now it's only pencil. I'll work it out as soon as I can, if my time allows.
Electrica got a few changes on her armor, to fit more in this environment. Gothic elements are dominant. Anyway it's still a concept, but shaping well and I think the final scene will take place on the square below.
Hope you like it!

Very nicely done background and the inking is looking great.
Are you going to colour it also or have it in a classic grayscale style.
I also wonder do you scan the image or photo it?

trashmito
07-02-2009, 09:16 PM
Thank you:)
Yes, I plan to do coloured picture too.
I scan the image, but my scanner is not very good, and I have to decrease the image size because of the size limit. If I finish this concept, I'll try to post a better quality picture.

Thanks for the comments, you're all very kind :).

I had it on my mind that I put people on the square but haven't decided yet.

..hey my friend...
... you really got some skills there...
... I was just wondering on the shoulders' part of the armor...
... are those syringes???...
... because at first glance, that was my impression...
... for me... that's the only confusing or not clearly expressed part of the design...

... but I like marriage the of your futuristic character placed on a classic back draft...
...let's see the colors!!!

trashmito
08-02-2009, 07:40 PM
Husam: Please don't quit! Turbo your creative juices :)! Hope you were kidding :).

Harorudokun: Thanks a lot :). No, those aren't syringes. Those are some kind of conductors. I hope I get Electrica coloured soon :).

your perspective on the church ledge tower just below the 3 windows is a bit off - I saw it pretty quickly cos it throws off the nice fisheye effect.

There's just a couple of things I think you should maybe try.

one : perhaps get some more extreme perspective into the character - to me her feet should be pulled away more (if that makes any sense - so they look smaller)

two : perhaps shift her downwards in the frame slightly or extend the image at the bottom- there's space there that isn't really committed to anything.
it'd be really nice to see the front faces of buildings coming up towards the camera at the bottom

just thoughts :)

Very interesting character, you've a nice touch mate, my compliments!! What did you do in real life? Are you a comic designer?

P.S.: the last draw posted is a scanned hand made sketch? Or there's a post work in PS?

Bye

trashmito
09-02-2009, 02:46 PM
Thanks for all! :)

poopipe: I'm not planning to do any changes on this one, cause this is only a concept but thanks for the reflections anyway :). I'll consider them.

madm4tt: Thank you! I was drawing comics a few years ago for Hungarian papers, but now I'm a designer student and I work as an archeologist technician for a living. Plan to work as an illustrator, but it's really hard to make some money from this in my country.

PS post work: Brightness/Contrast :).

I really REALLY like the "bent" perspective view which you've really captured :) Very good job mate!.

Though I have to agree with poopie's crit: "your perspective on the church ledge tower just below the 3 windows is a bit off"

Looking forward for the rest of the inking :)

trashmito
09-02-2009, 05:56 PM
Thank you again! :)

hulahuga: Yes, I noticed the failure, but I keep it :). I don't like to use a blade (in fact I did a few times). Thanks :).

I think I finished this one. I know it's not perfect or could have been better, but I'm satisfied at this stage. I have the character and environment, now to create a scene and give Electrica colours. Still don't expect digital work :).

Now that I think of it, that part actually pronounces that crooked cartoon look even more :).
Good job on the inking, some more lightning is needed on the back left :)

I think this will be my final entry.
I've made a million sketches before this one.
I stick to the original concept wich was: in the final scene Electrica demonstrates her power to children in a friendly or funny way.
But I also made some changes. The arm devices were so useless (too big and definitely not ergonomic).
They are in a park in the sealed city.
Hope you like it :). Coloring starts tomorrow.

Tonight I've made some progress.
Hope tomorrow I will be able to do much more.
I like to use weird color combinations and clean colors. Maybe the people in the city will be green or something...
I also posted a picture about the tools I'm using.

Hope you like it :)

It looks even better with the new changes. The electrical heart thingy is a nice touch, plus the expression on the little kids faces is priceless. I'd go for normal colors for the people of the city just to make her stand out, but that's entirely up to you. Can't wait to see the final result :)

hulahuga

Looks awsome :).
But why did you trash the old idea?

Jibberwocky
05-03-2009, 07:05 PM
I really like the direction you're taking the colors in, man. I dunno about the skin and armor being roughly the same color, though. Unless that's a base layer, or something. Otherwise, the composition and overall quality is great.

trashmito
05-03-2009, 07:48 PM
Thanks for all the feedback and opinions! :)
I really-really appreciate all the support! :)

cobaltblue: It already contains inking, ofcourse not as much as on the black and white picture. But there will be more contrast and heavier outlines. Thanks!

Husam: The children are already green, but I hope you will like it. :)

hulahuga: Thank you! :) Sorry I don't know what do you mean by "trash the old idea". I always planned to do a different colored version, if that's what you mean.

Jibberwocky: I have my reasons to paint the skin and the armor with nearly the same color. Maybe it's only my notion, but Electrica looks like an ancient greek statue as she stands there. So I wanted to wake similar feeling in the viewer. But previous colored version exists. Anyway Electrica was always blue in my imagination. Thanks for writing! :)

I uploaded some of the previous versions just to see how the final entry started.
Update coming soon!

First af all I'd like to thank all af you guys the support and kindness. It really means a lot to me. I don't want to get cheesy but that's how I feel :). It was a real fun working on this project.

During the process:
- ten cans of energy drink were drunk
- nearly 1000 tracks were listened
- two expensive brushes were killed
