This is it. I think this is going to be the final composition that I am going to submit. If there is anything anybody notices that needs to be changed, let me know. I won't actually submit until tonight since my work blocks the site I need to submit to lol.
It has been an absolute pleasure to go to war with you guys. This is the first ever low poly char I have made, and my first real time using z-brush. I just hope I don't embarrass theedy with my noobness. I have learned so much from doing this, and I have to give a big thank you to everybody here for being so helpful and friendly to new soldiers like myself.
Bring on the next comp!!

Warlock - Thanks I'm glad you like my entry :D, yours is looking very very nice I love the texturing the teeth and gums it looks awesome the design on the hat and jacket are very cool and the color choice is good, the only problem I have is the texture of the hair it is looking a little bit blurry and could be a but more crisp but that could be due to the low res image I'm sure it tightens up more at a higher res. Also the tip of his nose could maybe be a slightly darker color it blends in so much with the hair.

Hey guys everything looks really awesome, Unfortunatley I don't have enough time invested in Zbrush to actually have made a decent atempt. So instead I perused what you guys have been working on and I have been learning the nuances of Zb so hope fully I can have a go at the larger format. Good job and Good luck.

Bryand - Turned out pretty nice. You tried shifting the hue over to the 3DT colors just for fun? Anyway, looks pretty cool, looks like you drew a good bit of inspiration from Giger's alien designs, which is always cool.
redonix76 - If you're 80% done, that last 20% should really make this shine. Its looking good now, with the exception of a few "bare" looking areas, probably those which you've not gotten to yet, the chin/jaw, the "clasps" on the straps. Can't wait to see him all finished up.
gfxengine - Thanks, ya, I need to fine tune the fur, there's a lot of detail painted, it's just washing out on the render for some reason. :dunno:
You're fine time wise, don't forget to officially submit it tho. He turned out pretty cool looking, I think I'd still have liked to have seen him dirtied up some, but it looks pretty good the way it is. Nice work.
Mxma - Looks good, you need to get texturing tho, like yesterday! ;) Hope you can get it finished up, this is a pretty sweet sculpt.
SR_6274 - I think the blue helps show his loyalties much better. Turned out pretty nice.
Fixor - Thanks, glad you like it. I don't usually work stylized so this was a lot of fun.
Looks good. I think I preferred the white face paint tho, the black is getting a little lost. Regardless, I still think the way you incorporated the logo is awesome. Nice work. :)
LaMonk - I try to keep up. Your entry turned out great, really solid. You got a lot of nice subtle detail in there, didn't have to go overboard like a lot of entries did. Well done.
Astaroth - Its looking a lot better now, as far as the color issue goes. I think you could certainly get away with what you've got now, tho I'd still encourage you to play with the clothes borders some like you're planning to.
animateque - SR_6274 is right, now time for posting, back to work! [says someone who's neglecting finishing his own piece :wall:] Sculpt looks good, can't wait to see what you do texture wise with it.
IsadistI - Hey, that turned out pretty cool. Looking at the flats, the texture seems so simple, but really there's a lot of nice detail in there. Good job.
McKronic - Yeah, I'm probably gonna have to run a sharpen filter on that fur to get it to show up a little better, even if "destroys" it as far as the way I painted. You're right about the nose, I'll touch that up while I'm messin' with the fur.
Creos 3D - Looks good, I like it. She seems almost ghostly in some ways, with all the soft glowing elements. I dig the eyes. Well done. :)

BiG ToE - Yep, just a little warm up to have some fun. Your entry turned out pretty cool. I think the Adidas logo looks like it fits in much better now, and the clothes in general turned out pretty good.
rawk777 - Yeah, that turned out really nice. Well done.
Mxma - Looks pretty good, you've got about 5 hours left if you I believe. I'd try to get just a little more texture in the skin on the chest and try to define a couple of the edges on the trim around his temple area. Otherwise, lookin' good. :)
Haven't submitted yet, gonna mull it over for a little bit yet. Let me know if you guys see any stupid mistakes that could use a quick fix.

BiG ToE-3DT: Nah, you did fine on this ToE, I really dig the presentation you settled on. Certainly going to be unique in the competition.
rawk777: More solid work rawk. I like the design and the final turned out quite nice.
Mxma: Looks great, especially for how quickly you put it together. I think even if you just went with that, you'd be pretty well off.
Warlock 279: Turned out awesome Warlock. Really clear and clean, you get your design across perfectly.
drawec: Pretty good, I really like the final texture of your guy, especially in the blue metal. I like the background you used in your presentation as well.
Spiderclaw: Hey, just bake out your normals/diffuse and quickly put it on a background and you totally have time to get a final image in. Looks like it was a good start regardless.

Warlock 279 - Thanks man, gonna call him done and look forward to the next, learned a bunch doing that short piece, been a while since I had those kind of restrictions. Your rabbit turned out great, I like it a lot.
Creos 3D - She turned out nice, still can't believe someone got a chick out of those busts, hopefully the next mini will have some female busts to work with, if not there is always the main comp.
Ok, now to sleep for a couple of days, hehe, great job everyone. Gonna do these contests a lot more, helps me push myself further with so many good people out there.

I wonder how the voting is going to work. There seems to be too many entries for people just to vote on one/two/three. I feel like everyone should get to vote for one entry per forum, or something like that.

Seriously. I've been scoping out entries for both the 2D and 3D challenges for the last hour or so (and saving many of them to My Pictures, natch!), and I've still got plenty to check out. I've already gotten so many ideas from looking at all the varying styles and designs people have done. There's so much talent involved here; I can't believe there are this many forums competing this year!

drawec - Nice work. All the blues and whites make me think he'd be at home in an ice/snow environment.
ced66 - Thanks dude. :)
Spiderclaw - Shame you can't get it finished up, its certainly a nice start. At least you're warmed up and ready for the next one tho.
Joseph Pomeisl - Haha, thanks. Mostly just went element by element thru my texture sheet and tweaked levels to get things to pop more, and ran the sharpen filter on the fur probably a half dozen times, rendered him with the new textures and called it done.
I trust you're using the last hour and a half or so to finish your's up? :)
Puckducker - Yeah, the clean one looks nicer, I'm a sucker for breakdowns tho. I guess it comes down to preference. Would have been nice if the rules had been a little clearer as to what exactly they wanted. Seeing as "portrait" would imply a single focused image of your general, yet the nature of what we're doing...and most contests want breakdowns, oh well. Nice work, congrats on getting it finished in time.
I think voting is just a matter of picking the top five from each forum...and then judges will take it from there to decide the overall, I do believe I read that somewhere, could be mistaken tho.
Thanks, I'm glad you like my rabbit.
Bryand - Thanks man. The two mini's will serve nicely for any last minute learning and getting all your ducks in a row for the main one. Don't sleep too long, you don't wanna miss the second mini challenge!
bruceape - Don't fear, you're probably not the only person to make a clerical error on your entry. I always try to leave mine sit for an hour or two, and then proof it. Live and learn. :)
Warlock 279: submit before time is up. ...d-d-d-done! :)
Tallooriravi - Looks pretty good. I've got to wonder the same thing as they other guys are wondering tho. Would hate to see you get dq'd on a little technicality after a week of hard work.
Creos 3D - Who's side are you on? I think you may have uploaded to the wrong team. Your entry is showing under the GA.org entries rather than the 3DT ones.
melvinsqualor - Nice work, congrats on making it to the end in time. :)

If you didn't finish, please do not feel bad, keep working on it and finish it. It's all good practice for the main event later on!!
I manage to optimize the armor down to 494 tris. You'll notice that the top and back or his armor is quite boring and bare. I'll add more details later this week and finish him off for good.

Joseph Pomeisl - Glad to see you made it in time. I think your general turned out pretty excellent. I really like the stylization of it. Awesome job.
DeadlyFreeze - 37's not bad really, I think that's about what we had for the main war last year, and I know quite a few people who were staying out of the mini's this year in favor of just doing the main War. This was just a warm up afterall.
All that work for nothing. But thats life. Nonsense. You know what to expect now, you've refined your workflow/honed your skills a bit no doubt, and you're all warmed up for the main event. That's not nothin'.
Astaroth - Nice work, that turned out really nice, I think that yellow really accents things nicely. I think you're one of the few that I saw that did actually "posed" their model.
redonix76 - That turned out pretty nice, even if, as you say, its not completely done. I really like the dark red outlined by blue, that you carried thru-out the textures. I think it really helps to unify the whole piece.
Creos 3D - I figured it was just a mistake, and not that you were jumping ship on us. ;) Looks like they've got you in the right place now, so welcome back. :)
I just can't believe how many entries there are, just for the mini-comp. The number for the name comp is going to be staggering this year. ...Yeah I figured we'd see maybe two dozen at the most from any forum, and maybe a total of 125-150...GA.org alone has over 100 entries. and most of the others are hovering around the half century mark and up. Crazy! War's gonna be epic this year.

I wonder how many people got DQ'ed, unfortunately. I noticed a few people didn't submit with all the info they need to have, several people didn't seem to submit at the resolutions specified, and a few even submitted 2D work for their 3D and vice versa. There were a TON of entries though, so even with all the DQ's there must be like 5000 entries to look at:)
...
I wonder if I got DQ'ed. I didn't put my textures anywhere on my final render...
Oh well, even if I did, at least I got a workflow down:) That mini comp was great experience, though I personally felt too rushed to listen to any critiques, something I'm definitely going to do in the main comp. Also, not entering the 2D main comp. That should help my time management.

VersionThirst: coolest name award. Love the hat. Lots of character in the face, but the lips feel abit off for some reason.
Sathe: nice work - packed tons of stuff onto those 500 tri's. Reminds me of Sauron's helm. Only thing is that the basemesh is pretty much removed in the overall - may hurt for final voting.
discmage: neat idea. The eye could've been looking at the camera for more effect. Just a little too shiny for my taste.
Budelis: the low+normal came out well; the two color only texture hurt your piece quite abit.
KaterinaD:cool design. Good to see a lady competing. Just not seeing the 'general' in your character (or logo). Maybe if the specular was a little less glosssy the features would stand out a bit more - kinda washed out on the cheek area.
r0xmys0x: nice colors and character. The double pupils feel off for some reason. Maybe the 'blank' eye would've worked. Like how he has the feel of a general but not in a super-obvious way. Think that not using the necklaces may hurt in final voting.
Cloak: nice textures, the face has neat qualities. Seems like he'd be something the general sends out - not a general himself. Overall has a good portrait appearance.
Woody: seems too much of the sharpness of the hipoly got lost in the transfer. Like that beedy eyeball. Seems like he'd be something the general sends out - not a general himself. Textures could've helped him out alot.
Agent-X: the gold chord on the shoulder pads looks like shoelace. Neat design for the face - smoking's always a plus in my book. Kept the necklaces, but they don't appear to be fastening the cape; they just kinda end. Probably could've left the dogtag out - the pedastal as well, they don't help your character or image.
ced66: we all know how well the normals turned out:) like the colors and style. If anything will hurt in final voting it's that the 'general' in him is abit lacking. I can see it - just feels like I have to tell myself I see it.
heiyu: when Big-Toe asked to see your wires it was with good reason. The notorious point on the base's dome is non-existent. Still, textures and colors and design are pulled off well.
SeveredSon: the facial expression says general but the torso doesn't - could be the tank-sleeve. The wide nostrils are odd - but then again he does appear to be an alien.:)
VinsanityV20: the flames are a distraction from the character. Missing that 'generaliness'.
DeadlyFreeze: that's one odd character. The gas mask seems stuck on, maybe if it covered his chin more. Nice colors.
FrZnChAoS: brains....neat concept and the textures are good - just can't see the general in him. Like the glow of the eyes.
McKronic: I like the idea but it kind ends up all blending together, it's hard to focus on any particular point. Can't explain it too well though.
Fixor: this thumbnail pops the most. Like the style. Looks like a portrait. The grimace on his face is awesome. There's a generaliness about him, but could be more from the tough-guy appearance.
LaMonk: pretty cool, strange design. The textures could've been used to push him in the older, wiser direction.
Bryand: the torso is too repeating - could have used a visual break. He looks to be in pain more than letting out a massive battlecry:)
IsadistI: something instead of the logo could've fit better - like some venting/grill type stuff(logo could go to that dark patch adjacent to the face - made to be more of part of the suit than a decal). Nice job on the face, the nostrils are abit tall though.
talooriravi: the thumbnail pops, but the main image suffers in compression, kinda blurry. Lacking in 'generaliness'. Like the skin and neat design for the face.
L3XICON: nice colors and design. Monacle a plus. Great job overall. Like the progression shots on the right.
BiG ToE: kinda goofy, but that was the point, eh? The textures, especially the shirt, came out well. Why 4 o'clock?
drawec: nice design on the armor. Maybe the fangs would work better coming from the lower lip?
grindill: you got the parrot in there:) Teture on the jacket collar and hat could've used some more highlights. Maybe if his eye was more looking at the camera?
gfxengine: you render with the blend filter? nice design, like that dark eye. Just not seeing the general in him - more of a mercenary feel.
rawk777: it must've taken awhile to put all thoe stiches on:) The texture is too much of the same - some different colors would help to break it up.
Warlock279: looks like a general, smokes like a general. Only thing is that the planes around the collar(for tufts I assume) didn't show up in the render. Nice job on the fur. Congrats on the worst name award:)
Puckducker: nice work, clever turning it upside down. The collar's shininess takes away from it looking like fur. Not using the necklaces could hurt in the final voting. Overall has a good portrait feel to it - the airplanes could've been left out, without taking anything away from the overall.
bruceape: the eyeball seems out of place, as does the logo - could've been more of a design element than a decal. Does'nt come off as a general. Maybe if the blue from the shoulder was present in the holes throughout there would be more cohesion in the texture.
Creos 3D: neat idea. nice textures and colors. The straps have buckles but no end(generally found near the buckle). Could you explain to me how you copyrighted the image?:)
SR_6274: the textures could've used some more attention. The area where the bone shows through is a difficult thing to pulloff- maybe highlight the skin edge to pop it out abit, and the bones could have some shadow to appear more rounded and set back. The lightblue and gold works nicely.
melvinsqualor:neat idea, like the way the textures look. The chest area could've used some more time/different design. The stripe running down his face might work better with a color other than black.
polysmooth: the lighting could have been a bit brighter, maybe if more of the right side was visible. The charcter lacks any trace of threedy colors.
mxma: nice job on the textures, just doesn't come off as a general. The print on the fabric is really nice. Neat design on the mask/helmet.
Lsouthard3D: like the scar on his face. But the textures are abit blurred.
arobbins: the thumbnail pops. Well done on the disign and textures. Just don't remember seeing any wips for this. Not alot of general going on.
Bahamut: Good portrait quality to the image. The necklaces came out great. The gold trim may have worked better if it was ribbed(if that makes sense).
redonix76: nice texture work. Would've been neat if those lights bounced off of the appropriate surrounding areas.
Joseph Pomeisl: you really spent the time to do this? Don't you realize most people have deleted the files already? You're an idiot.

:hmm: I was so in a rush that I forgot to put the 3DTotal logo and even my own name!! I had a chat with Fred from GA and he said it was ok if we forgot to include your personal information and logo, as long as the logo was on your character. He told me my entry is fine. I feel a bit better!! I would suggest talking to Fred to see if they might have any problems with your entries. He's a really cool guy so I'm sure if need be, he can let you fix "some" things.
BiG ToE-3DT - Maybe you can help others confirm that minor issues could be fine? I'm sure everyone's were all stressed out and didn't realize some of their mistakes.
Warlock 279 - Thanks man, for the kind words. If only I had one more day...but then again, I'm sure everyone feels that way!!
Joseph Pomeisl - Thanks for the crit. I literally uploaded like a minute from the deadline...I totally forgot to add the glow and bounced lights.

The way it will work, you are alllowed to vote for the top 5 for each forum, 5 for 2d, 5 for 3d.

Haha, no worries about the planes...really. They kinda weren't looking so hot anyway, may have been a blessing in disguise having forgotten to turn them back on.

Joseph Pomeisl : Thanks for the comments, I know I really appreciate them. I completely agree with you about the textures. I had originally textured the body, and I thought it looked better, but something happened to the file, and I couldn't get it to convert to a texture, so I had to completely re-do it, and I think I rushed it the second time around.
Overall I'm happy with the way it turned out. Considering this was my first ever low-poly character, I hope it will only get better as I keep going forward.
Good luck to everybody on the voting. You all deserve to be in first place in my book :)

Do we have to vote for every site? Also, something occured to me regarding the cross forum voting...say, if you were a chump(there's quite a few of 'em ou there), wouldn't you just vote for the crappiest ones for the other guys so that when the final judges vote came there'd be a huge imbalance?
P.S.: Please do not do this.

I have a question, for those that do not make the top 5, does that mean they can not compete in any of the other mini challenges?
grindill
05-03-2009, 08:37 PM
Agent-X: Nope, rules say "- You are not required to enter all challenges. Pick the ones you like, and join."
Agent-X
05-03-2009, 08:43 PM
Ah, well the reason I asked is because I noticed it said this on page 1.
- Public voting starts Thursday March 5th to March 8th to find each team's best 5. Each team’s best 5 entries then gather together into a single pool and a grand mini champion chosen and announced with all other Dominance War IV event champions in June.
I thought only the top 5 voted would move on to the next mini challenges. But I think its great for everyone to compete. I hope everyone can compete. It would suck if only the top 5 voted would move on. Well, that being the case, I am looking foward to the next challenge. I would like to compete again.
redonix76
05-03-2009, 08:59 PM
I think each mini challenge will have their own top 5 finalists. So I guess the next mini challenge will just be considered a new caterogry and everyone should be able to do it all over again...I hope.

what if someone votes for their own? are there rules against that??
grindill
06-03-2009, 04:32 PM
McKronic: I don't think there are any rules that say you can't vote for yourself. They just say vote for the top 5. If you think you're in there, go for it. Also, if you couldn't, it'd be pretty hard for the forums that only got a few entrys.
Can this thread still be considered a WIP thread? I was just doing a little more practice before the WAR and thought I'd share and try to get feedback. It probably won't get finished all the way, but I'd still like to hear what people think. I'm thinking some kind of a forest spirit. Maybe make the collar out of wood/bark? Ripped and torn flags. Still not quite sure how I would integrate the very geometric threedy logo into it.

maybe move the antlers further towards the front of the head.
redonix76
06-03-2009, 06:05 PM
DeadlyFreeze - Thank you very much for voting for me, I feel honored!!
McKronic - yeah I've looked around to see if there was anything in the rules that says you can't vote for yourself and I didn't find anything. I'm guessing it's fine.
grindill - That's a great idea to keep this thread going as a WIP for people who still wants to keep going or finish. There's still a few people hanging around on here that can help give you crits...until the next one starts anyway!!
You know I'm all for creativity and all that, but I've never really seen a design with those flag things on the back that really works well and is balanced. Personally I think you can do without them because it stands out too much and will only look right in certain angles. I like the antlers and the shoulder piece.
If you are using the front part of the head as a mouth and nose, then the antlers are in the right place. If the nose part is the top of the head and the face will be in the front, then I would agree with Joseph Pomeisl and bring it forward more. Keep at it and we'll help you out as much as we can.

I have a question for you guys using Maya. Are there any other ways other than using a Mia_Material_X shader to have two bump maps. Its the only one I have seen that has two bump maps in one shader. The reason I ask this is because i usually use one for normal and then another for tileable detail bump. If you guys know other methods using Maya please share them with me. Thanks.
redonix76
07-03-2009, 07:06 PM
Agent-X - A far as I know you can only do it easily with bump maps but when I tried to combine Normal with Bump, it doesn't work. Sorry man, but I'll see what I can come up with.
Warlock 279
07-03-2009, 09:47 PM
DeadlyFreeze - Thanks! :D
grindill - Looks like a cool idea. I think I'm with redonix76 tho on the flags. Maybe just one flag, or two that are parallel with the viewing plane, maybe crossed. The logo should work alright on the flag[s] if you keep one/them, otherwise, maybe on a sash? Sashes are kinda cool.
Creos 3D - Yeah, when I think of a General, I think stars, bars, and cigars, [ epaulets as well I s'pose, tho they didn't quite fit the uniform style I went with]. Enough others were already rockin' the cigar, so I figured a carrot would be a suitable substitute given the nature of my character.
If you guys keep this open, I'll continue to stop in. Had a think I might even play around with a making a second general just for some painting practice. :)

You can vote for whatever forum you want to and it doesn't have to be the top 5, you can just choose the top one, two, three, etc.. from each or single forum you choose.
Agent-X

Thanks Redonix76. I think I found two other ways. Layered Shader and Layered Texture and of course the third is Mental ray Maya Shader Mia_Material_X. I have been experimenting with multiple things. Just watching Gnomon Tutorials here and experimenting, Prepping up for the next competition.
DeadlyFreeze: I wanted to say something to you, I learned something after the contest. I could have probably gotten a better looking normal map if I didnt seperate the model into seperate objects. So yeah, I just wanted to say sorry. I noticed from creating the normal maps with seperate objects on the head and the hat I maintain hard edges seperating the uv shells and normal map. Meaning its not smoothed right there, because I made it a seperate object. If I would have kept it one object, and projected the normal map and just painted my other textures ontop of it I would have not had that hard edged look. So yeah, I just wanted to come out and say that. So um yeah, I guess its all good. We learn something new. I think its good for other to hear that too, it helps them out too. Ill be in the next competition for sure. I am just going to keep studying in the meantime. Peace.

Its cool man I wasn't trying to be a dick and call you out or anything. There is a distinct advantage to using sub-tools like that, you can go from being capped to 3 million polys for one mesh to 12 mill for a mesh with 6 different sub-tools.
I'm sure more people, myself included would have worked the way you did but it was simply against the rules.
