Sculpt your favourite Celebrity!

Welcome to THE Fourteenth Speed Sculpting Challenge. Whether you're new to sculpting, to the Threedy forums, or you're a seasoned veteran, come and join in on the Sculpting madness – there's plenty of fun and learning to be had by all!

The Rules:
1. The competition will run until the 20th March 2009, 12:00 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/)); the time between now and then will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries – at which point the next competition will start.

2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition, from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic. You must work only with the base mesh provided and you must not add any additional base meshes or objects of your own. We simply want you to use your imagination and see what you can come up with what has been provided!

3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating – we are relying on your honesty here!

4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.

5. As the base meshes show, the sculpt this time starts from a simple cube, so as not no limit what your conception of greatest fear is. This time you can use the base mesh twice, if you choose to. However, do not add any additional objects, SubTools or base meshes yourselves!

6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is

the quality of the sculpt you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognisable and on topic.

7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc., but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "Manage Attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

8. You can create multiple sculpts, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.

9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Submissions thread, once it has been set up later on in the Challenge.

These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!

We've attached the supplied base mesh at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide!

Subject: Celebrity Caricature

Attention fellow sculptors! We here at Threedy have listened to you, and due to the popular demand shown in the sculpting challenge suggestions thread, we’re returning to our human torso base mesh and allowing you clever people to craft your favourite celebrities. You can sculpt your favourite pop stars, film stars, television stars, models, presidents, DJs – heck, even politicians! And as an added bonus we are allowing any celebrity from history – living or dead. You can also choose whether to sculpt them as they are now in the present, or when they were younger, or perhaps as they appear ravaged by the sands of time. The choice, as they say, is yours.

The Mesh:

This month's base mesh has been ressurected from the Manimal challenge, and has been created by forum member, Crimson King.

Your base mesh is attached to this post - simply click on the attachment at the end of this post, save the file, import it in the sculpting software of your choice, and you're on your way!

Please note that you mustn't add any more objects – use only what has been provided and nothing more! This is the challenge after all!

Here's your .obj file - download it, have fun & get going! >>>>

Here is mine. This one is Galder, Dimmu Borgir's (my only very favorite band, symphonic black metal band) guitarist:

133593

I'm not happy with it but it was a nice experience to sculpt him, nice practice. It tooks me 4 hours, then I still have 1 hour to spend =). If you have any suggestions about what I could do in this 1 hour to improve him please tell =).

[EDIT] The lack of creativity didnt let me go much beyond this =|. This is final . . . 4.5hours total.

well i have no idea what the actual man looks like, but it doesnt look all that stylized. the only thing that looks dramatically altered is the forehead seems a little high. i would try to exaggerate some of his more prominent facial features. looks good though!

You can't create a new mesh from scratch, but you could have Ghandi laughing or something that involed him without eyes, and use the eye objects to create the glasses. Or indeed try to extrude the glasses from the base mesh somehow.

Those are the rules i'm afraid.

Wonderful Kramer entry though, looks really good!

Alright 3dTotal, you win... I've lurked here for a while, but I'm in for this one.

1 hr 40 minutes in so far. I think I'll do a couple of different characters, and use this one as a warm-up as I think he has a certain feature that's a bit of a "gimme" when it comes to getting a likeness, but if you can't guess it then...maybe not :)

Anyway, good to finally join the forum and it's a pleasure to be working alongside you guys, some lovely work here.

hi guys,

here is my second attempt, again i found a great caricature online and decided to use it as my ref,
I had noticed that all the entries so far have been guys so i thought i would do a lady this time, she could do with a little more detailing in the hair etc.. so if i decide to use her for my final piece ill do some more work on her but for now she will do.
this is around about 1hour 30 again,

some great looking entries so far,
julienN:- Love bruce, very nice sculpt and i really like the harder edge look to the definition around his chin and jaw. cant wait to see it with the final hair.

CHAO5:- great einstien, i was thinking about doing him but you beat me to it

VersionThirst:- thanks, i dont get much free time so when i sculpt i like to get as much done as quickly as possible :) , great model, i just love that afro

im probably going to try a few more models before the final deadline as im using my lunchbreak through the week for sculpting :D

OK here is it.
Edit After Reading again the rules I think i made a mystake... In Zbrush I extract the Hair from the head, and so the hair are another Subtool...
Maybe i'll have to resculpt sculpt it on the model?

Lord McGoat
02-03-2009, 12:36 PM
julienN - Just go to your head subtool and with your hair visible hit "project all", should work fine for hair like that.

julienN - Just go to your head subtool and with your hair visible hit "project all", should work fine for hair like that.

Lord McGoat thank you for the tip!
But it doesn't work very well, lots of bugs appears.
:dunno:

Lord McGoat
02-03-2009, 01:14 PM
Hmm what kinds of bugs, can you post a screenshot? You could use the zproject brush instead, but for something like that "project all" has saved my ass quite a few times.

If it's just a few areas that are causing problems, you can hide them before projecting, and they won't be affected (masking doesn't seem to work).

If your hair is double sided, like it is a whole piece rather than just being hollow, that will confuse the project, because it will project against the inside rather than the outside, so you will need to hide the inside part of your hair.

ok, heres another one i have done during my lunch break at work, its not finished but i dont like the look of the clothing so im going to move onto another model as these are great practice for me and its rare i get any time to model character stuff just now so i am enjoying doing these quick sculpts, i will probably come back to these after the comp and finish it off.
This model is only 50min of modeling.

WildWire:- very nice as always, you have a great style to your work, i really like the hard edge's you have in your models, this is something i rarely do in my models but i might give it a go.

julienN - Glad it worked man! Lovely sculpt, nice one.
darkmonk - Both very nice sculpts, very recognisable.
cmarcus - Solid effort for your first time in zbrush, and a great choice of celebrity to do too.
adrianBenjamin - You chose a damn hard one man, I don't think most people would recognise a photo of Hunter Thompson. I think you're making life even harder with the hat, since his large forehead/receding hairline is quite distinctive. Cool idea for a sculpt mind you...
AlexM - My what a fullsome pair of funbags she has. Do you have perspective turned off for those pics? When she's posed the distant shoulder doesn't seem to be affected by perspective, which hurts the pose.

Anyway, here's mine, 5 hours all used up.

Maxter - Would I be right in guessing yours is Carrey too?

Pedro Toledo - I gotta say, it was your pirate speed sculpt that got me following these competitions and eventually getting the balls to enter, so thanks for that. I'm loving the amount of character in your sculpt, but I've got to admit, I don't know who it is. I think that's just because it's an actor I'm not familiar with :o

I've been working on making a model a day, just a couple hrs of work, and i'd been lacking focus, then i found this thread. So I'm probably gonna post a couple more of these before the comp ends.

Here's the start on Dr. Horrible himself, Neil Patrick Harris. About 2.5 hrs into this so if i like it in a week or so i'll put some more work into it before the deadline.

Also, awesome Mathau, and owen wilson.

Great job everyone! I hope to have half your skill someday!

WildWire I love the Pavarotti, very clean work!

Been lurking for a couple years, finally decided to get off my butt and try to take part :)

I decided to take part in this one because I figure a caricature's a great way to learn sculpting without needing to strictly adhere to realism. With that in mind here's my attempt at Sylar from Heroes.

Logged a little over 3 and a half hours on him. I learned a lot about Mudbox in the process, but I have got to get a handle on how to do hair. It's something I usually leave for texture-time, but I see a lot of you doing a damn good job of it, so I decided to give it a go :)

ASTUS
11-03-2009, 01:08 PM
Hey update.

Not sure how to make a custom material in mudbox, i don't think any of the default materials really make my model "POP" and get the most detail out of it.

Advice?

EDIT: Made a custom material what do you think?

hi guys,

Wow, great to see so many entries in this comp and all of a very high standard.
I have done another couple during my lunch breaks at work lol,
the first is george clooney, this took just over 1hour to get to this stage, and the second one is Walter Matthau which took 1hour 20min,

Pedro Toledo :- you beat me to it with Walter Matthau but i had planned on doing a version of him anyway so i thought i would give it a go, love your version of him, really well done

I have also done a timelapse video for the first time ever just to show my sculpting process for anyone who's interested. im planning on recording all my sculpts from now on :)
you can find the timelapse for Walter Matthau here,

Ok, spent another morning staring at celebs. And I'm having the same problem I always have when I try caricatures, I always keep working at them till they look too real. Here's a quick start on clint, If I come back to this one I think it's gonna take a lot of work to make it look exagerated. If you compare to any photo you can see it's not really a likeness, but jst looking at it, it looks as though i've tried to go for total real. I think pather than going off a photo for the next one i'm just gonna go find a caricature someone else has drawn as reference.

AdrianoHM - Really nice clapton. I don't know if i've really seen many pictures of him young so I wouldn't have recognized him without the prompting. But the caricature and model are really nice.

Bobben - Really like the tom hanks. I had found some caricatures of him and that was going to be the next guy i tried, but I think i'll leave that to you now, and try someone else. I think with another hour on sharpening things up and a few minutes painting that could take the comp.

Got another one done, I think i'm getting the hang of these. I know he's not exactly current headline material, but so many people seem to be playing around with obama caricatures, i figured ol' W needed some representin'.
My little brother loves bush caricatures so i consider this dedicated to him.

It was really fun to take part on this Challenge! Thanks everybody and congrats for the great work!

Sigh, well, It seems that when I work from photographs I'm not that good at making caricatures. they end up looking too much like the subjects. My wife tried to warn me that if I tried to caricature churchill I'd end up just doing a likeness cuz in her word "he's just got such an interesting face on his own"

McGoat- That model is freaking awesome. Probably the best modeled saggy old rocker flesh i've ever seen. Makes me wish there were more to the base mesh so that he didn't look so much like an amputee. also is that one of the standard skin matCaps? if not where'd you get that?

Oh also, I finally found a decent use for those teeth inside the mouth that just always seem to get in the way.

Here's my start on everyone's favorite father figure who never makes it through the first Act. Probably still leaning towards finishing up George Lucas for the final, but I wanted to give this one a try.

Nice job finishing up with the Jim Carey model. looks great.

It'll be nice to see all these models finished in the final submission thread (assuming everyone didn't get distracted by dominance war starting again)

Have been some great caricatures here lately! Great work everyone!
The mr Bean is a great start, you really nailed the likeness :)

I also love the George Lucas, really cool caricature!

I guess there won't be any final submission thread? Anyway here's my final submission. Was hard to choose if I would go for hanks or cleese, but I finally decided to go for Hanks.
5 hours used, still some areas I would like to fix, but time's up!

Thanks for the kind words H2Olt. I actually have no idea where the matcap came from, I just took it from the library at work, so it's probably bought or downloaded from somewhere. It's called "wet clay", but I didn't have any luck trying to track it down online. If you're interested I'll ask around and see where it's from.

Very nice finished Lucas btw (was the reference one of Jason Seiler's studies?). Liam Neeson is instantly recognisable too, especially from the profile.
