Hi,
this is my final entry

My name is Mateja Petkovic, i am from Belgrade, Serbia

I imagine this one as a castle build in rocks itself, very old and moody.
Some knight, after a long battle came to rest, to enjoy in good vine and food :)

It took 4-5 days to finish it. I did it in pscs3 with regular brushes, nothing fancy.

Here is link to wip tread

Uhh...I'm still working on lighting. Real life is making it difficult. Feel free to move on without me, as the quality of mine isn't nearly as good as some of the others. I'll keep working on it, and hopefully have an entry.

Hi Suirebit, :)

When is the deadline for submission of the final entries?

Btw, I have been very busy for the past few weeks, so could not really post an update to my WIP thread! Now, it seems, I must start working on my matte & post the final entry asap! :)

Very nice matte Mateja! :)

No need to PM me, I've seen the deadline, but I just got a new toy (upgrade from CS2 Design Standard to CS4 Design Premium) so I've spent my time on Flash this weekend which is quite new for me. (But it had a little to do with matte ;-)) Promise to finish my matte in the coming 2 evenings though.

Name: Joe Melton

Description of image: Nighttime image of medieval street, gateway to castle courtyard. Had to rush the lighting/shadowing toward the end...real life got in the way of my plans for this one.

Technical details: I created the image entirely in Photoshop CS3, with the assistance of my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet.

Hope you like it, thanks to all who replied in the W.I.P. thread on this forum (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=65590) and thus helped creating this image.

I used several images which were released under the Creative Commons license and learnt a few things on the road. (Amongst others: Make a sketch before you start!)

Hope you enjoy the final result as much as I did making it.

Short description of the image: Being a huge fan of LOTR trilogy myself, I tried to give an epic feel to this mattepainting! Here, a warrior is seen staring at this massive castle, where he was destined to travel to find something precious!

Technical details: It took me approximately 10 hours to complete this digital matte painting! I have used Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended software to do it. I always do my mattes using a mouse; no graphic tablet!

WIP link is here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=64874)

I don't have the time to do any more work on mine, and I rushed it to get something entered before the 31st.

In the interest of fairness, I think we all had the same deadline. However, in the interest of having more entries I guess it makes sense to extend.

eyecon
02-04-2009, 01:50 AM
as for me (I will hate myself for this) do not want this prolonged. I think it will be unfair to those who rushed their work and really took the time to finish it. But whatever the general consensus would be then that would be great. And if its extended, then I may be able to send my entry.

Suirebit-3DT
02-04-2009, 07:36 AM
That's why I called for a vote, so for now there are 3 for extending and 2 for not.

Ok, I'm prologing this until April 10th. To make this fair, those who got their entries ready on time will receive a bonus prize and may edit their entries further until then.

Looking forward to more entries (hopefully) :)

I mean come on guys...it depends on you whether we will have more challenges in the future or not...The plan was to have in the future an uber challenge sponsored by nvidia and others, but if we have such low participation, it will be done for other techniques and not matte painting :(

Hi guys, as much as I want to join this challenge, sadly I no longer can. One huge reason is that I'm stuck to my current work, which, to my dismay is harder than I have expected. Somehow my supervisors just don't want to let me go. Oh well... I have a rough done but I can't finish it today since I'm stuck here at the office. Yeah kaustav, I simply can't finish a matte in a day, that seems to be just too much.

so guys enjoy! I will try next time. Work can be hell, but then again I love my work. :D

p.s. I sooooooo wanted to join dagnabit!

Oh! It's very unfortunate that you are not in a position to submit your Final Entry! :( In fact, I guess, the deadline was extended by Suirebit, keeping your entry in mind (and we too were waiting to see your brilliant artwork)! But...! :wall:

Yeah, 1 day is not at all enough to complete a matte! I hope that, you'll participate in the next challenge! :)

Hi kaustav,

Yeah, and I feel soooo bad right now. Worst part is, I think I have to stay in the office overnight today to finish some renders so :wall:

Once again I apologize to all the guys especially suirebit. But sometimes work takes precedence over pleasure no matter how stingy that would feel. I wish I could just turn back the time and said no when this task was assigned to me...:ugh: The matte I'm doing sadlly will stay on WIP stage until I get some extra time off work... like a 2 months from now...DANG! Anybody knows how to clone yourself? PM me please....

I can understand your situation! There's no need to apologize!

Hehe...LOL! :haha: I know cloning in Photoshop, do not know how to do it in real-life! If I knew, I'd have surely told you! :D By the way, it would have been great, if cloning would have been possible in reality! ;)

Bear in mind that because of this low participation, we might not have another challenge here for a while :(

I'm sorry to hear there are not enough entries to have another challenge straight away, I really liked my first one here. I think it's better to state a definitive deadline from the beginning, this motivates people to finish their work in time, now I think that everyone that started their projects didn't feel they had to keep at it and when a project is put on hold it's simply not motivating to return to it and finish it. This way it will never come further than beeing a WIP.

Well, just wanted to say that I would enjoy another challenge, maybe even a friendly one without prizes, just for the fun of it.

Didn't do any more work on my painting, so I'll keep it with the one already posted in this thread. I recently updated my Creative Suite so have been playing around with Flash last week, new toys are always fun! ;)

Looking forward to your critiques, hope to learn from this.

Thanks

Hello!

Just wanted to mention that we are working on plans for a new challenge 'system' for Threedy, which will involve monthly and bi-monthly deadlines and tie all challenges in together (in a way), meaning everyone will know where they stand in terms of deadlines and be able to follow other challenges in the other forums on Threedy as well for added inspiration and motivation. It's gonna be fun! Challenges will remain as they are for a while until we get ourselves sorted (so much to do!), but I think our ideas for the challenges on Threedy will be very encouraging for all - I imagine this will be put into practice later on this year (but don't hold me to that - things have a habit of changing) :)

Big thanks to Tiberius for running all of these matte painting challenges alongside what I know is a very busy work schedule. Thanks Tiberius, we do all appreciate everything you do here at Threedy :)

Suirebit-3DT
16-04-2009, 05:01 PM
Thanks Lyn :) Can't wait to see the new system, it will be much easier for me to keep these challenges, and also for the guys to know the deadlines.

Alrighty, here's the results of this challenge:

Firstly, everyone who participated gets a free e-book of their choice.

No.1: Mateja> While i have some picks with the day version, the night one works very well and the light is right on the spot. The abandoned boat adds a nice feeling. Take care of the left distant areas (those seen through the stone arch), they seem too bright and wrongly lit (they are lit from right).

Mark: 8/10

No 2: Guitarsimo> A bit too bright and the light is off in some areas, but this one is quite a pure matte painting, bravo! Would fit very nice in a set with actors. Just take care of the light and it will be a portfolio piece.

Mark: 7/10

No.3: jfmgraphics> If not for the bad texture quality (looks like you upsampled reference), and the too saturated blues, this would've been quite a nice matte...it's not bad, really, you should just go in and put some proper texture on those walls, also make it more bright where light is (right now it's very dark) and it will be a 7 piece :)

6/10

AND

snwbrdr> This one reminds me of assasin's creed for some reason. I like the concept and idea, also the mood of the image however the light is too uniform and coming from different angles (why are there hard shadows near the castle, to the left? if it is overcast then there should be no shadows at all)

Mark: 6/10

--------------------------------------------------

Comments for :

kaustav> I appreciate your effort, your matte is not bad, but the guys above took you. The blue you used is too saturated and uniform, even though it's night there should be variations, look at mateja's piece for instance. Good job and looking forward to see more from you.

5/10

voil> this is not a bad matte, but not really a night scene...the day one is ok though. I'm really sorry I can't give you more than the participation prize, you should however refine this image, it can be a nice one :)

5.5/10

Thanks for the great critique Tiberius. Looks like I need to calibrate my monitor, because I didn't see the oversaturated blues. I do, however, see that it is quite dark when viewed from my laptop.

It's my first attempt at completing a matte painting, so I'm happy to have received some recognition in this contest. I'll be sure to enter future contests as well. :)

Thanks for the comment, I see your point here about the shadow. Will keep that in mind in my next paintings. Lighting this scene proved to be harder than expected with the snow and night thing goning on.

not a big deal, just look at final entries and pick 3 which u will e-mail me :) And also give critiques if possible. You can do this for up to 3 challenges, after which you can participate again.

Is it possible to participate in this challenges, but without entering my work in "final entry thread"?

Mateja, if you ask me as a judge I would not join, simply because your work might influence the others on how to proceed, being that you are one of the deciding body. Besides you had your chance to shine :D its our chance this time.... :D

Ha ha, i understand that, but i wanted to participate because i want to improve my work and to build portfolio but
you are right, i can do it but without posting.

Yeah dude, I understand... If I was in your position I would really love to do the same... These precious little comments are really important. I suggest though, some other offsite forums that we can critique each other, I can name 2 right now, PM me and I'll add a few more on the list... we can talk there and share critiques... you on me and me on your work... that sound good?

that kinda defeats the object of using Threedy as a community though if you go to another forum to talk about a challenge on Threedy. hmmm. I don't see why you can't work on an image and show people here without posting your final - why would that be a bad thing? I can only see it would help others - that's the whole point of these challenges, so that people work together, share their work, their thoughts, their processes ... We learn from one another - that's the whole point of Threedy! no need to be so competitive: yes, it's a challenge, but you can still help each other, and others.;)

i have nothing against for you to make an entry, but obviously it wont enter the challenge :)

Lynette and Suirebit,
Yeah that was my point, to share my work with other people and to learn for them.
Eyecon, i think we can comment our works here, like Lynette sad, or anywhere else,
it's all about learning and enjoying in creating new mattepaintings.

Btw when and what is new topic?

You've hit the nail on the head - have some fun, and learn along the way :D

Thats amazing new! I always thought the challenges where for challenge entries only (due to the lack of a mattepainting thread) and judges were somehow not allowed to join.... but with this update I am pretty excited! Thanks guys thats really awesome.

Mateja, this would be cool dude... its like total freedom and yes! We can post out work here no problem! (now to clear my schedule....) :haha:
