Ok, just getting my thread started up here. I will have a progress update soon.

Being my first real matte painting I'm not familiar with any good techniques. I'm currently trying to stitch two images together. Its quite difficult to match them exactly, I'm trying to get the colors about the same and match the shadows and highlights.

I did a little more tweaking and started to play around adding in some other elements. I'm thinking this is where I want to put the main gate, I will be extending the walls to the left and right. I'm not sure if I'm making it too small.

yeah I have to agree with suirebit, even if you make your image into a 2048 k resolution the gate is still small. You might want to enlarge it a bit more where if you put actors infront of the gate you can still recognize them.

ok thanks a lot, I have a lot of resolution to play with so it shouldn't be a problem.

I cropped the image, started to block in a wall, re-scaled the building a bit, and deleted some of the background elements.
