Ok well, here it goes.
I did this rough sillohette. im still not sure what race todo, im liking the demon lord and war machine classes so far. i want to do something big, rediculous and just plain old unfair for anyone fighting it in battle.
heres a rough, will doodle some more

Big and ridiculous looks good. Rockin' silhouette and wicked guns.
The location of the head is a bit ambiguous right now, I gather that he's sporting some eye lasers, but there's also a middle doo-dad where the head would be in a more traditional character as well, and it's creating some confusion for me visually. I think you might be better off with just two of the doo-dads on the top of his back instead of three. Hope that makes some sense.

I'm really enjoying looking at these silhouettes. The exaggeration you've got with the massive arms, shoulders & chest is full of awesome.

iamnick - thanks man :) dunno what the rules are against swearing.
M_Cederstrom - they could be bigger ! :D
Warlock 279 - i totally see what u mean and thanks man, helps to have fresh eyes on stuff like that.
Jensen - thanks bruv
drGrim - yea i did start the silohette in alcemy, then took it into photoshop. i didnt use alcemy for the guns.
Beindulin - thanks man, the exageration, im not sure if it suites, will see :)
Heres a small update. im not sure where im going this the design, i will try and add and delete parts when ive got all the lines out of the way, and add more detail. still basic atm, im not very good at the techie robot stuffs.

Maybe it's just me, but for the size of those guns the grip doesn't seem to be beefy enough considering the huge blade on the thing.

4 legs sounds good ..
4, increases stability and allows it to handle heavier and higher cal weapons. Plus it looks Bad-a$$ though you might not want to dog-leg the front legs then...

ok well here we go...ive had a rubbish night, my graphics card over heated (luckily its ok) and my pc shutdown (which somehow resulted in my psd going currupt), and i lost the sketch, so i had to retrace it from the jpg, which had its ups and downs (got to change stuff i wasnt happy with), but anyway...
i pretty much made it that hes like a tripod. but his back leg is a huge bad ass metal wheel. and he walks with his two front legs which pulls him forward back or whereever jst like he was walking, but he rests on the wheel, if u know what i mean.the wheel is jst for stability. and for riding things over, i think.
im kind of tired so im not over exciting about the bottom half, i think it needs a lot of work, the style looks diff to me to the torso. lemmie kw what u guys think.
sweet, and thanks for the replys :) they keeping me going at 3am!
now that's what I'm talking about!
drGrim
17-03-2009, 01:12 AM
that is one sweet design. love the new legs. im not really into that whole wheel idea.. but it is a totally radical idea and an interesting one. massive wheel like that + huge badass robot sitting on it is freakin deadly. great job

17-03-2009, 02:33 AM
Very cool, and an awesome start! I think I preferred the initial concept where the top half was a little more dominating in the design though, but the details you've got worked out so far look great.

Looooooooooooove it!
Sorry to hear about the malfunctioning machine, but if it's gonna happen it may as well be early in the contest. I've had that happen at the worst possible times....
But yeah, sweet work, the forms and details are very pleasing to behold. Can't really offer anything constructive right now I'm afraid, just keep uo the good work!

Awesome design so far.
One major point for me though, keep it biped. Sure 4 legs sound cool, but how many poly's are you going to sacrifice from detail to get those extra legs?
The silo looked good as a biped, I'd keep to your orig design, which is Awesome, oh I already said that.

thanks for the kind words and thoughtful comments.
my problems is. he has huge MASSIVE guns. which i imagined to have huge recoil.
i dont want long big legs, because that will detract from teh torso and make him look not as menesing. so if he has 2 medium sized legs, he will fall over. which as u can imagine is not a good thing in the fight versus demons and norms. turtle robot on its back is fail. so theres 2 legs 1 wheel, which to me feels like hes in a wheel chair. and also makes him seem less dynamic and like he can move around as fast. then theres 4 legs, which i will have to explore on, right now spider man isnt happening.
i think the directions im going in are, 2 legs [smaller guns], 4 mech legs [bigger guns], or MAYBE 3 wheels. will have another decent update soon, maybe the finished design. ty again all !
Puckducker
17-03-2009, 12:15 PM
Wheel...wheel!! I like the idea of having two front "appendages" and then one massive centered wheel at the back for counter balance and stability. You could even put in some sort of artillery idea, that he needs to deploy supports in order to fire his big gun.
Check this. look at your third silhouette. I thought it was only three legs till you said four legs. Three tree-trunk like solid legs make it into a tripod. Stable yet still mobile, it slows it down and could set you up for medium or large guns. (I wouldn't do the large gat as a hand held though, more like the over the shoulder RPG style...) All three legs could easily be like the ones you have on wheel chair bot.
I donno just a suggestion.
hulahuga
17-03-2009, 12:42 PM
I would say a huge melee warbot would look awesome!
And he would be two legged carrying a siege gun on his back.
Or four legs/six with guns on his shoulders or under him. Perhaps tentacles underneath him and no guns. The tentacles would be ended with grasping hooks which takes demons and humans into the main body as energy to fuel the relentless siege machine.
BiG ToE-3DT
17-03-2009, 12:42 PM
have you tried a big gun, but lower on the model and two large legs up front to handle the weight of the gun, and maybe some tread in the back for better traction
Freekybevis
17-03-2009, 01:17 PM
so many good ideas! bigtoe, dont kw why i jst didnt put the gun lower in the first place thanks for bringing that to my attention. with seige weapons andthe sort, i read in the rules that these "war machines" make up the crux of the machine army. so i didnt want to make this guy tooo specialized. alothough rocket launchers are always cool. the humon/fueling is also i good idea i will think about. might add that extra oh noes run away feel. have some visable fuel cells with bodies in them ?
heres a small update. i will start on the 3d now, with the parts im happy with (torso, head, chest etc) i want to concept out the arms and gun / guns properly tonight, so that i can go from their on the mobility / legs / wheels etc.
thanks for the replys :)

Coming along very nicely! I just want to see some mobility on the wheel, It would be good to know that the wheel could extend backwards in order to deal with a stationary duel weapon strike, what with all that recoil.
Fantastic progress, keep it up!

17-03-2009, 03:29 PM
Just a thought, and maybe someone said it...but with a huge wheel like that could you have those two stabiliser legs fold up and curve around the front of the wheel, and then he just thunders around like a big ass unicycle! Then he has a bull bar for running down things as well. (eg. put something painfull on the front of the legs) :)
Freekybevis
17-03-2009, 04:14 PM
gunz start
actually thought of that disc and now that u point it out its not a bad idea ! wat i was going todo is put big blades coming out of the wheels. but then i thought theres no point cause nothing gunna ever be getting within meelee range to it anyway! will try work it so it folds up. setschaos : i was planning to do that :D, lots of joins like an extended spine with tons of armour end eventually ending in a wheel.

Great start, the silhouette really is translating to 3D well. Maybe make the wheel a little larger in diameter and tuck it up closer towards the body? Not sure how that'd effect the rest of your mechanics, but it might make the wheel feel more like it's handling most of the weight.

really nice concept and a good solid start to the modelling, my only suggestion would be to try and find some elements that show the scale of the warmachine. In your earlier concepts, just the shape and feel suggested a huge machine or (BFOR ;p) though looking at the current 3d, it looks like it should be quite small. possibly its the wheel, or the general scale of everything in comparison to each other. some added recognisable elements at correct scale could really bring back the (this thing is f-ing huge!) feel of your earlier designs :D
good luck!
I think hulahoop was talking about the enemy polycount... not the model s polygon count... Damn this is confusing.

L3XICON - thanks man. and i know what u saying. i get that feeling as well. thats why i put a tiny little box infront to try and remind myself im making something huge. i think it could be that im worried about the current poly count in the model so im really jst focusing on getting the big shapes down, and ive neglected the tiny elements that add scale (which i was hoping to accomplish with the normal map) im trying to finish the torso up quick so i can take it into mudbox, andtry to get some of the details in. maybe that will help. if not its back to the drawing board :)

got an idea, so you can keep both the back legs and the wheel.
Lets say this beast needs to travel long distances, in a situation like this, the back legs would mount up next to the wheel, almost like a fender of sorts. When it reaches its destination the back legs release and once again, make contact with the ground.
jettmx
19-03-2009, 01:44 AM
when i first saw the wheel, I was wowed because I had never really seen a cool idea done like that before.
however after seeing it without the wheel and seeing it with the hind legs, i see that it looks definitely more power that way.
is there some way you can change the posture with the wheel to keep the 'wow' effect for the wheel and the 'wow' effect for the stance?
I like the wheel better. But both are cool. Do the one that feels best to you. (I still think that three legs is the way to go.)
Puckducker
19-03-2009, 02:26 AM
Yeah, I like the wheel as well. I think though right now the horizontal is more spread out that the vertical with the way the wheels/legs are positioned. It might help sell the idea of scale if he was taller than he was length wise.
BiG ToE-3DT
19-03-2009, 02:34 AM
another idea, make the wheel bigger, like real big, like the top of the wheel is at the same level as the top of the robot.

it starting to come alive i think. not too sure about the hands / protection stuff.
EDIT- actually im gunna just give him one huge gune, ive designed this whole thing around stablity so theres no point in taking the bad ass gun away. gunna put the nuke grenades on the outside of each leg so he can unclip and throw.

Hey mate! really nice job so far! You'll be done by next week!
Is it your intention to have a kind of humanized face? I can see the eyes, a noze and an open mouth (where there's a blueish-whiteish bright light). I prefer your early stages when it looked more "pure mech".

Ooh, watch that cable on our right [machines left] on the bottom, it looks a little square with how drastically it drops from its origin, I would suggest adding another loop just to that section or even just making it less of an angle on its way down. Looks absolutely amazing otherwise!

Jensen
24-03-2009, 08:36 PM
I really like the yellow. The contrast it creates really makes the character pop more. I agree with Ghostbrush that the darker color looks more "menacing". Maybe a tad of desaturation on the yellow image would be able to achieve both, but I'm not sure.
Anyways, I vote for yellow,
And I also vote 5 stars. I'm loving this thread great progress!

I like the orange tone from the first one. Something about it just looks awesome; I mean, usually orange is too loud, but that shade is perfect. It stands out, it looks great, and it gives him a nice personality. Almost regal looking.
Btw, just awesome looking work so far man! Really cool design, very distinct looking. The concept art is solid, the modeling is great - especially for a first D-War? Dude, you're rockin' this thing!

25-03-2009, 08:20 AM
I stick with my original choice of the second darker colour scheme, have it drippin with oil and fluid, few dry blood stains and magic burns would really help the detail and break up some of the larger shapes. Really like this though! its cool as f**K!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the second choice.. add dirt blood scratch n such.. any brighter colors i am afraid will make it less intimidating.. imo anyways.. maybe add brushed/stainless looking steel to more parts of the armor.. instead of brighter colors..

Sigh i hate Telkom (south african communications hell government owned monopoly @#$%). It rains here (a slight drizzle), and the phone lines go down for the whole day. >.<
It was actually kind of kewl. I seem to concintrate better when theres no internet. No distractions.
Need some advice on this. Seen as I havent really gotten very far with this robot, ive decided to change it, quite a bit. I wasnt really happy to be honest with the 4 legs wheel, was a cool idea but when i put the legs together as mud gaurds it looks REALLY weird. It helps to concept that stuff first.
All im changing is the parts i havent started texturing yet. i want to keep the main torso and tweek it a bit as u can see in the concept. (will be scrapping the texture ive done), my reason for this is because i want to normal map this, obviously. and bake a high poly model onto my low poly. and thats gunna be a mission with the texture already done. So im gunna do a backview of this current version, and then start straight on the high poly, i dont kw why i didnt do this in the first place...
In the old design i wasnt happy with the contrast in shapes as well. Ive worked a lot on that now, and the flow of lines seems to be working for me a bit better. Anyway, heres the updates. btw, ill post his gun up in the next 10/15 min or so. somehow i duplicated the layer 3 times within itself and saved so have to redraw.
Hopefully i can bring all youre colour suggestions into this new one. Thanks for the crits they all help! :D
ps (there is a hole on the back side of his left arm, where the grenades fall through and come out of a hole in his hand, then he throws them)

Love the size of it.
Now... 3D!
Uh... it's a HUGE rat!!!
But I really like the shape. Looks amazingly great!
(And I'd take the second colour, for this robot, too.)
I love the arms, very cool. But the new legs while they look good, they seem sort of thin and weak. Or at least they look like the weak point in this things design.

I wasn't sold on this idea because I found the wheel to be a bit.... odd. I'm sold now- this new concept is really quite good. It has the feel of a big, hulking, killer machine. *subscribe to thread* I can't wait to see where you go with this thing.
See not to sound like the odd man out, but I liked the other one better. It was so different from anything. Now it's just a giant robot. Cool looking, but still just a robot. The other was it was visually distinct and interesting. But that is my opinion and you gotta d what you like and will enjoy Freekybevis.

Freekybevis
26-03-2009, 02:22 AM
dhin - yea man i know what u mean. My main reason for loosing the wheel is that it just doesnt make any sense to me, logically. what can a 30 foot robot do with 1 wheel that he cant do with 4 legs ? and on top of that he didnt have a 30000000cc engine to power the 1 wheel carrying 30 feet of steel so i wouldnt imagine he would go very fast. Another reaon is in battle i only see it slowing him down, also i wanted to try make it more of a generic style, reason being is that warmachines make up most of the machine army apparently so i see them being mass produced, not special case 4 leg 1 wheel syndrome. anyway ty :D
xxxcubanxxx - Ty man, im not overboard sold on the weapon. Seen as hes jst 2 legs 2 arms i want to try do something really insane with the gun, will design more when i get there.
hardtack-thanks bro

love the Desert Rat is one of my top five. I originallly liked the hands you had in your first sketches, but since it is a machine you can top-off on the 10K tri limit rather quickly. I'll keep a close eye on your progress. Are you using Maya or Max? I'm curious because in an earlier post you mentioned this is Ur first mechanical design. Most of those detials you can get from a well designed texture and bumpmaps. Well, I'm sure you have a plan to acomplish your task. Good luck
