The last one on the right reminds me as a cross of a void walker from WoW and Slimer from Ghostbusters. My favorite is the middle one on the second image, although I would do away with the cross.

I like the bomb guy. Something about a huge blob thing thundering toward me with a back full of bombs scares me a little.

the bomb guy does look cool.

I really like that first guy. He just looks so ...godlike, I guess. The bomb guy is standout also though; and I like the headress on your last concept. Wanna see what you're going to move ahead with!

I think the fat one has more potential. It's less traditional to the one below. I'd really like to see you work on the face and play around with a couple different head and mouth shapes to give it more menace. Arms also could be bigger. Definitely looking cool.

I actually liked the deer lookin sketch, could have been cool.

Yea, I think the fat one has a better chance of being more original. They both look great so far though.

You might be pushed to do it within the budget, but how about doing both of the concepts from the first image with the fat bomb thrower being the demon lord's pet? Would be very cool if you could pull it off and well within the rules

The bomb guy is quite suited to be a pet. I like the very first sketch, the Demon prince would look cool with a mask and horns sticking out of it.
I found more interesting the fat bone collector.

Although the antler guy looks more cool also, the rest of his body looks normal. I still vote for the big bomb guy, but ultimately it's up to you. It's important that you feel comfortable with what you're working on since we only have 7 weeks left. Keep it up!

I like the idea of a gun for the arm. Are you going to have some type of feeding system set up so the bombs go directly from the bag on his back into his arm? Like an automated loading system.

I don't know that i know how to make two characters on one 2048x2048 map.
I am a year away from graduation still, so im still learning. Also this will be my first game character.

another idea to maybe have a loader, that works under the skin and into the cannon.
These are quick just to get the idea across. please don't judge ha

Can't say I'm a big fan of the pirate thing, but I do like the loading system under the arm. Would be really cool if you could find a way to make part of it either transparent, or torn apart through use so you can easily get the point across that it is the loading system.

your top left concept art is the best character I see in this thread. I would go back to that original design and make that. Possibly really think about that character and work what is working in that one. The other characters just look silly to me and dont cut it. Seriously man that first design is a nice one. Go with that.

23-03-2009, 05:40 AM

Warlock 279
23-03-2009, 07:04 PM
Aaarrrrrrr, I'm all for the pirate thing. I think it's both fitting, and adds a bit of fun to the character. The bombs need "smiley faces" on them, one's that mimic the big fella's face, so everyone knows who they came from. Good stuff, keep it up.
chris_solo
23-03-2009, 09:14 PM
I like the idea of Warlock 279 smiley about the bombs. The gun really take shape, I like. I suggest making the feet a little larger and against I don't hang by the pirate band, but this is only my opinion. Nice work, man.
VinsanityV20
25-03-2009, 03:48 AM
You might be pushed to do it within the budget, but how about doing both of the concepts from the first image with the fat bomb thrower being the demon lord's pet? Would be very cool if you could pull it off and well within the rules
I should probably finish reading this thread before I start writing anything, but I gotta say that this idea is pretty cool:) Seeing a big, fit, sorta tradional demonlord character riding a big fat bomber demon would DEFINITELY be the strongest idea out of any of them seperate.
Now to read the second and third pages and see what road you headed down:)
EDIT: Man, you sure are sculpting some models pretty fast. Really, really cool - it lets you toy around with all sorts of designs. If you're going to stick with just the one idea -- the fat bomber -- than the design you're taking him down is definitely more interesting than the original concept. The organic sacs that load bombs into his arm cannon is a really cool, kinda disgusting, visual. He's looking pretty unique so far:)
khemist000
25-03-2009, 04:06 AM
Glad youre going with the bomb guy. He's looking awesome! I say, no pirate eyepatch, but some chains perhaps? Or do something interesting with the bomb sack, rather than a traditional Santa bag. Maybe something along the lines of capitan_popo's wing design but different.
Good Luck.

25-03-2009, 03:03 PM
First off thanks to everyone for the comments and crits. this is a huge help. Im finishing up my finals right now so there won't be any new posts til monday porbably.
Khemist000- thanks, i am not going to do the eye patch. Im going to ditch the santa bag thing and concept something more interesting to hold the bombs.
Warlock 279 & Chris_solo- i am going to put the smileys on the bombs, i think its a sweet idea. now i just need to make it translate
Im going to do the steel cannon with some sort of built in skin sac to hold the bombs. Also im going to attach a small flame thrower to the bottom of the cannon so that he can also attack the short range attacks and to light the bombs when he puts them in the cannon. Also im going to put some sort of tank on his back next to the bombs for the flamethrower.
The idea to have the demon prince on top of the bomber is awesome but i have no idea what im doing as far as texture space. So for now im just sticking with the fat guy. I think that i will progress more and get a demo reel piece if i really try on this guy.

Hey thanks everyone!
Can i get some feedback on where to improve, i'm kind of new and don't have a eye for the extra 20% i need to make it finished.
All comments are welcome, i do not take anything personal
Buzzy
16-04-2009, 08:02 PM
Here are some ideas to get that "extra 20%"
First, you gotta do something with that hand. Compared to the rest of him, it looks muddy and unfinished....its a lumpy mess right now. Give him talons...or a gauntlet.
Give him some kit....some accessories. A belt.... a few bits of armor...a coin purse...a small powder keg tied to his waist...just some random useful items. Maybe put a wick on the cannon and give him a torch, so that he has to light his own arm to shoot the cannon.
Give him some sort of close-quarters weapon. He'd be vulnerable in battle once the enemy got in close. Maybe a nasty curved dagger or a hatchet.
Lastly, lets get some interesting details on his body. Scars, boils, piercings, spikes, warts.
I really like this guy so far, but you're right, it needs a little extra to put it over the top.
chris_solo
16-04-2009, 09:09 PM

Excellent progress on this guy!
The work so far is top-notch, but I gotta agree with comments thus far that the right accessories and a good texture (make sure you put a lot of smoke around the cannon's opening!) will give 'im a little more 'zazz'. Particularly something for aiming - since I have the images stuck in my head from when he was a pirate with an eye patch (ahhhh, back in the day...from page 3), I keep imagining some sort of steam punk-ish monacle he uses to aim. That's just me though. I'm sure whatever you come up with will be interesting, well sculpted, and add tons of personality to "big ole fat bomb demon"
...
Hmmm, have you given any thought to a name for him:D

Yeah thats a good colour but make the barrel silver/gray instead of black.
Warlock 279
30-04-2009, 08:01 AM
Yep. I'm with them, that color right there is wicked. Make sure you paint the veins, and not just the ones that are reflected in the normal map, but the other ones that are close to the surface and can be seen as well, but don't actually effect the shape of the surface, the slightly sub-surface ones. They'd add nicely to the rather ghastly look of this fellow, as well as adding a complimentary[ish] color and breaking up what you've got now.
I'm not sure I'd go silver with the barrel, that seems like it would be distracting. I dark pewter might work tho if you wanted to try that. I'm,personally, liking the black, but as you have it now, its too black, bring the value up some and I think it would work.
Also, just your friendly reminder, you need either the 3DT colors, or the logo in there somewhere, I'm not seeing either at the moment [course I've been known to have not looked closely in the past]. I think you said way back when, something about the logos on the bombs but we've not seen those yet so... Embossing the 3DT logo on the barrel of the cannon wouldn't be a bad way to do it, they often were decorated.
Otherwise.......this is looking ace! Great stuff! :D

Hey everyone, Im hitting a roadblock...I want to add some accessories to him but i can't visualize anything that would help his character. I don't know if i should have rags or chains or armor.
What do you think?
jjvdb15
01-05-2009, 05:36 PM
an idea for some makeshift armor. The idea is that it is bolted into his skin. I want him to be more of a crazy mofo. So something nasty like getting bolts into your skin would be badass i thought.
This way he could have protection but still move, though his movements are limited.
Any other ideas?
http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc236/F1fanatic/update7.jpg
I like your model very much. Though I'm not really sure about the armor. I guess this is just a test and the colour would be different?
Warlock 279
01-05-2009, 07:07 PM
You know, I'm kinda liking the bolted armor. Ggiven his shape, its just about the only way I can think to actually attach anything to him.
If you're looking for more crazy, you could always try some crazy piercings, either aboriginal bone-thru-nose type stuff or more tame rings/studs/bars. If you did pierce him all out, and wanted to have some fun with it, how about a mohawk? Be a nice way to get some color in there and liven things up some.
Nothing says crazy quite like a mohawked-pierced-ghastly looking dude running around bombing the be-jebus outta his enemies. Just a thought anyway.
I see veins in there now, nice work. :)

aw man - didn't know you were struggling with some ideas so rapidly lately. I really have to pop in to WIP threads more often, instead of just on the weekends.
Well, you can always trust Team Threedy to guide you in the right direction. The color is an excellent match for the detail; it's fleshy and realistic - it complements the details nicely. Meanwhile the armor is dirty and industrial; he's very muted, but it totally works. He looks dirty, he looks tough, and he looks totally believable - everything is just working:D Though the Team Threedy logo on the back might be a bit odd - will you be presenting him in a way that can show it off when it's ...in the back? That's the only part that might not be working for me - ideally, I'd shape that plate that currently rests on his left breast into the Threedy logo. It'll be smaller, but you'll definitely see it on the front.
Btw, thank you for putting the smoke ring on the cannon opening:) It looks excellent now. Your intuition was right on also; the armor is a cool idea, being bolted directly onto the "crazy mofo" as you put it. Though - and this is really the only critique I can think of - I think if he were so crazy, tough and dangerous, his texture would be dirtier still. Y'know - dried blood from the demons he's killed and rust on the armor and stuff like that.
Don't spend too much time though - he's excellent as is! Do what you gotta do to finish on time - the deadline's coming fast! Monday, May 11!

THe flesh looks awesome, both texture and sculpted detail. One thing to keep in mind. and i hope this is a minor adjustment, it that most creatures (especially humans) don't have the same flesh tone across their whole body, tones tend to get more saturated around the head, and undersides of limbs and things (rolls of flab in this case) tend to be paler. I think a little bit of that would go a long way here.
Just try that a bit on the head especially to bring it out a but, and then get that lowpoly going, at this point i hope you don't run into any problems with projections. Good luck.

well your maps are fine, but you do have yourself some free space in the middle. Unless you plan on using that for somthing, it will be considered wasted space, which is bad.
for your renders, you can go with one of Buzzy's shaders, which will be a real time viewport screen grab. Or you can toss a few lights into the sceen and then render. Don't know any tuts on it. Wish I did.
discmage
07-05-2009, 12:48 AM
Yeah, from what I see those aer all the parts, meaning you have a TON of space you could use up. I would redo the mapping and bake unfortunately (it sux, but if its any consolation I've redone mine 4-5 times already!) and see if you can scale up your map parts to fill in the area more. This will give you more resolution for the parts you have, meaning more detail.
How are you planning on doinging the teeth? You could possibly use an alpha on that perhaps? Although it might be tricky to blend into the mouth.
Looking pretty sweet though! Keep it up! :)

Very nice update. Looks like you've figured out the rendering in real time issue. The skin looks really nice now that the specular has been added in there, it looks great from what I can see, if you want some more detailed crits throw up some shots from other angles and I'll see if there's anything that stands out.
Also, could you post up any tips you found for getting the rendering going in real time. At this point if I run into any real time rendering problems it may be hard to finish on time.

BiG ToE-3DT - My tri count is 9,762 but the other polys that are in the scene are sending it over that. I'll post a new one to illustrate.
H2olt - I can't remember where i found it but i went to some site (that i will try to find again). I'll go through it tonight and post what i did and see if i can help you out.

last thing, I'm checking the main war site, and looking at all the entries for our team, and I don't see your name. Did you create a thumbnail page for the main war site yet?
If not, take a look at the thumbnail thread and do what it says.

BiG ToE-3DT - yes it is in editable mesh mode. That's what its supposed to be in right?

What bigToe is getting at is the fact that the screen shot says "Polys: 9952" and not "Tris: 9952"
The rules are specific that it must be less than 10,000 TRIANGLES. If the model is an editible mesh, then polygons and triangles are the same thing. However, if the model is an editible poly, then polys and tris are different and you would probably have twice as many triangles as polys.
You can set your viewport statistics to always display triangles instead of polygons.
In other news, this character looks great! And your base is killer!
I think I prefer the flesh colored version, but the blue version is cool too! If you play around with that concept some more, you might convince me further.

Thanks Buzzy! I had to turn on the tris in the viewport options.

Added lights to the scene and this is pretty much done. Now to pump out the render sheets.

what you got going on now is the way to go.
I liked the fleshier texture-version better, but it looks also awesome this way.

That texture looks so badass, man! The blood is perfectly done, and shows so much (admittedly twisted) character. It also contrasts nicely with the rest of the texture, so things like the teeth "pop" more. He's super detailed and totally gruesome - one of my favorite monsters to come out of D-War IV definitely. Excellent work jjdvd15!

Here are my final images. Thanks everyone for inspiration and help on this project. It is so great to have a community that is so willing to share ideas and help. I'll take this experience to my graduation in December and hopefully compete next year!
Thanks again everyone and good luck!

Nicely done man. I love the pedestal. It looks like he's taking a shower to get all the blood of his fallen enemies off of him. Grats on finishing :)
