Hello, I'm a student in 3D CG, I know there are plenty of "pro" participating in this contest, but I think what's important it's to participate, that's how you learn, no? I could add: and because this Dominance Wars IV rocks, but i think, maybe, it's useless.
And I've got this robot project for my school... and there is a robot category...
The problem is that I suck when it's about worktime management.
So depending on my advancement in others tasks I'll decide myself at the end of this week (Friday) if I post my work here or not.

About the concept:
Machine: Scout
Scouts are advanced intelligence gatherers for Machine kind. They are small and are either fully mechanical, or animal hybrids comprised of animal and machine. Scouts are extremely mobile, fast, and possess light weaponry and armor.

Protecting a precolombian style portal, two colossal pillars remains...on the watch.

Tasks finished, I'm on it.
I've been working a little bit on my concept during schoolwork so it's easier :halo:
Story:
"It was only a secret reconnaissance mission on a primitive planet, but they identified a hight quality crystal, a level 3 energetic diffuser. Their objectives had changed...
And now, it has been approximately three hundred years, slowly adaptating their shape to the environement with their metamorphic abilities, that they're keeping the precious stone... 'nd not a move, not a single one...
Just...watching."

Somes sketches, somes concepts...
I've also worked on the pedestral (It looks like a big cookie, hmm), and on some structure test (I've got to make an animation with it). Comments are welcome.

Hey, you've got a lot of interesting stuff here. For the heads I'm really liking #3, I think it'd be a great match for the speed painting on the right in that same post.

You're "X-QQQ" image is really really hard to read. I think you overdid the filters in that one a bit.

I really like where you're you're taking your inspiration from, looking forward to seeing some more.

Jgavin: Scout are always on the first line on the battlefield!

markus_omega and Warlock 276: Thanks for your constructives comments.
I'm trying to get some impressive and frightening guardian, something "sleepy", inactive, something you really don't want to wake up when you approach it.
Something maybe like an old mummy, conceptually, or some kind of "frozen" snake ready to bite, it's hard to explain the concept. :)

You're "X-QQQ" image is really really hard to read. I think you overdid the filters in that one a bit.
Warlock 279: yes, and maybe not a bit... It was late, I won't do it again, I'll try.

Started the basis of the inner head, enough research about mandible and maxilla, now I need to make some mesh, this is just a start:

Update of the head basis, I had to get some more maxilla documentation, I'm soo slow... I forgot to show the inner part of the mouth, maybe next time...

Vas-y fonce! Il y a plein de choses geniales dans tes concepts, et ton dernier model 3D a un style d'enfer!

Keep it up!

PS: Chuis belge ossi :D

Great stuff man, keep it up!

Salut la France
So you've also worked on the precolombian style, that can be useful for for me.

I agree with you, on my concept sketchwork sometimes I make too much lines and I loose my shapes, we can only and hardly distinguish the outline, that's a real bad habit, but I don't always draw like that, those are draft. Maybe I shouldn't post them on my thread, those are not really useful.
But this kind of work is not always negative, I'll explain myself:
I've seen plenty of "outline" concept sheets developped from the "splash" technique. I'm using the same kind of trick with lines.
I know it's something unreadable, it's not clear, but it's some kind of suggestive technique. You can see different shape in one, and you have to take out your best one. Sometimes I obtain something completly black because there are too much lines, but it's funny, just like spash. Those are the not-useful-but-funny-draft, but I can understand that we can't win the war if the orders are not clear! Yes sir!
Another annoying problem, it's the detail versus contrast battle, I think too much details kill the contrast, and conversely, am I right?
And the fact is that precolombian style is something really heavy talking about construction and details, there is a lot of geometrical parts going there, so I need to be twice cautious as somebody else. Because if I'm loosing myself on it, I'll overload and "kill my work", so you also remind me that chris_solo, thanks.
I've started the rings work:

Pacman is back and he escaped, just find him sergeant, we've got some questions...

Modelling looks solid so far....the repetition looks great, and going to make texturing a lot easier. Hopefully you're able to beat the deadline...still a ways off, but I'm feeling it getting a lot closer myself.

washka

You're right about the texturing trick, and I really need to beat the final deadline, still a biig way to go, time will judge me, maybe I should talk/post less and work more.
And your Dark Matter is some great warrior of this war!

This is mostfully a test for others high relief parts of my robot.
This is a "tumi", an Inca ritual knife (I think). The blade was longer when I made it (somes edges there...), but I wanted to show the traditional blade in half-moon.
Don't be fooled by the realistic side, it's not. The diffuse map is just the reference photo with some colour on a planar UVW. On 3dsmax when you change the view and zoom on the flat model (no normal map, foots are just box, it's 2 sec default scanline), you can see the pretty little stretching and the false shadows photo aspect :halo:

Chris_solo, your "Sleefen" is really rich (particularly the sculpting), he's got an aggressive and dynamic style really interesting, I also like the "devil monkey" side. If in reality I got your "Sleefen" in front of me, I would just run...and fast, but I'm not sure I would survive.

Some upgrade, I'm happy the submission date has been reported but I think I won't finish it in time. And even if I think I've already lost the war, I wont surrender until the end, I'll continue to defend the flag! And maybe...

There is some update: I'm working ATM on the ring part C, then I'll continue to the head part A or the legs part D. I also need to start the thorax/claws parts, still a looot of work...

Ok deadline is there...
I've not finished my mod... :hurt:
I've not started my tex, I've not finished my rig...
There is no more hope left...
They told me that only death awaits the brave soldier... :ugh:

BUT I STILL WON'T ADMIT DEFEAT!!! (Because I've seen too much masterpieces here and also I'm a too bad looser for that)
So I'll use my secret dark side skills... My precious hidden weapon

But tremble, yes you can, people of the vegetables, because "HE" will claim his dominion on the kitchen garden.

that is simply my favorite entry into the war, even if it isn't quite 10K tris, you came close! I applaud you, sir. that's what I'm talking about people! do not be afraid to take risks!

When you've nothing to loose, is there a risk?
But thanks for the nice comment, really! I wish you'll be on the war again next year.

Just wanted to show you the final result of my school project. I finished it in august. I couldn't finish it for DWIV because it was quite impossible for me ^^, critics and comments are always appreciated.

can you change the background color to something lighter, it will help viewers see your model.

washka
01-10-2009, 07:59 PM
Yes you right, I used black background for my render test because the short clip was taking place during the night...so...
And this thing is not a low poly work. Even if I would finished the hight poly work for DW4, I'm not sure I would have been able to make it 10 000 tris with my actual skills, definitly not, maybe next time...

Here you got some lighter background, I hope it will help:

That is a really awesome idea man- and well executed. The only thing is that its so crazy that I'm not exactly sure what it is I'm looking at! Whatever it may be though I find it very interesting- I think it'd make a sweet video game boss.

washka
03-10-2009, 07:03 PM
Yes, with some more detail work, and a reworked low poly version maybe, it could be of any use it in realtime.
It's already the main character of a short cheap clip I did.
There is still some sharp edge problems, and I should rework the mod of some pieces like the headress..
Thanks for the comments.
