Sculpt your self portrait!
Welcome to THE Fifteenth Speed Sculpting Challenge. Whether you're new to sculpting, to the Threedy forums, or you're a seasoned veteran, come and join in on the Sculpting madness – there's plenty of fun and learning to be had by all!
http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww288/Freespace87/comp15poster.jpg
The Rules:
1. The competition will run until the 1st May 2009, 12:00 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/)); the time between now and then will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries – at which point the next competition will start.
2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition, from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic. You must work only with the base mesh provided and you must not add any additional base meshes or objects of your own. We simply want you to use your imagination and see what you can come up with what has been provided!
3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating – we are relying on your honesty here!
4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.
5. As the base meshes show, the sculpt this time starts from a head bust. Do not add any additional objects, SubTools or base meshes to what was given.
6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpt you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognisable and on topic.
7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc., but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "Manage Attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
8. You can create multiple sculpts, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.
9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Submissions thread, once it has been set up later on in the Challenge.
These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!
We've attached the supplied base mesh at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide!

The Brief:
Time limit: 6 hours
Start Date: 2nd April 2009, 12:00 PM GMT+0
Deadline: 1st May 2009, 12:00 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/))
Subject: Self Portrait
Allright, gather round everybody! As we continue to recklessly abuse the suggestion thread (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=64703), a new challenge arises. We know you have creativity and imagination. We know you have mastered the sculpting tools so far as to make Zeus blush when he throws lightning bolts at stray cats. But have you mastered your own image?
The task at hand is to sculpt yourself in a maximum time frame of five hours. An important addition to the rules this time is that you need also provide a picture of yourself to be presented alongside your final submission ( and your WIPs if you want - that's up to you ).
The Mesh:
This month's base mesh has been is our beloved base mesh that some of you know very well from previous challenges ( such as Manimal, Celebrity Caricature ) created by forum member, Crimson King.
Your base mesh is attached to this post - simply click on the attachment at the end of this post, save the file, import it in the sculpting software of your choice, and you're on your way!
Please note that you mustn't add any more objects – use only what has been provided and nothing more! This is the challenge after all!
Here's your .obj file - download it, have fun & get to work! >>>

You should see us lot then, haha! ;) Just take an 'arty' picture of yourself - doesn't have to be as unflattering as a passport photo (yuk!); just have a go sculpting first and then post your WIPs. If you do something great then you can work on the photo to submit along with your final at the end. Should be fun!
. . . look on the bright side.
You DO have access to just about unlimited resources on the target :D

That's a great point, Daye :D
Now really, this isn't going to be a Miss World contest. We're all 3d maniacs here, and it's all about the challenge of sculpting yourself as accurately as you can. I know I've tried once and it was quite tricky.
We need a photo of everyone who joins so we know you're not pulling our leg here.
I hear everyone at 3DTotal staff is really curious to see this thing get rollin.
By the way, that's my face in the Upper-Right corner of the poster. :shy:

Allright, if anyone thinks 5 hours is too little for a self-portrait, I can bump the time limit up to 6 hours. How's everyone feeling about that?
Also, bear with us a little bit as the attachments are off at the moment. I will reupload the basemesh as soon as possible.

Can we submit a different version of ourselves despite how we currently look i.e. shaved beard or a different haircut?

i think as long as its close to the pic we provide, it should be alright, but it would be cooler to do it as you currently look

Sure, why not - just make sure your facial features/expression are sculpted well so we can see that it's you from the photo you provide :)

hardtack, that's a pretty cool starter! Your mouth is a bit lower than in your reference pic, but it's pretty much you. The nose is spot on. :)
So yeah, the new time limit is 6 hours. This should give everyone enough time to capture their visage. :)

i kept thinking that about the mouth while i was sculpting, but i think its actually that the chin isnt long enough. i have a long face. haha

That's part of the challenge, hehe. It's quite tricky to sculpt someone in particular, but you guys already know that from the previous challenge. :)
Don't forget to show a photo when you submit your final work, or for WIP if you want some constructive crits.

these are great! it's really hard doing self portraits. i remember trying to do a pencil one once when i was studying - you know, trying to be as realistic as possible. and it's hard because you kind of want to change what you see - you know, you sort of subconsciously make it to what you think you look like, even though you can see the reference (be it photo, reflection) says something else. it's a hard task!! the best way I found of doing it was to grid up a photo (you could do that in PS, i imagine), so that you can actually see where the features fall and not just where you think they do (or want them to, ha ha). good luck guys - it's a tricky one for sure, but really great practice for your sculpting - as well as for training your eye - so keep up the great work!! :)

I actually might finally find the time to have a go at one of these challenges!! I really wanted to do the last one but work was just toooo busy!!
Can we sculpt ourselves when we were younger?
It'd still be a self portrait but not of present hagardness.
I'm not really interested in sculpting myself as I am now. I have to survive looking at that in the mirror everyday as it is.
If I can't I understand and it's totally cool but I'll probably give this challenge a miss.
Hardtack I agree that your chin could be a bit longer but it's looking great!

Allright, it's still you and that's important. :) As long as no one comes along and sculpts a version of themselves when they were in diapers.

Here's my first attempt. An my first challenge post (and ZBrush Sculpt) for a very long time!
Decided against doing a younger version of me 'cos I realised I don't have any photos and I just wanted to get into the sculpting.
Only 1.5hrs in and still needs soooo much work. Very hard topic for me!!
All crits are welcome! The nose needs attention as the bridge is too thin but there's plenty else wrong with it.
Still having fun doing it though!!

Joseph Pomeisl-nice sculpt, but if you think you are ugly -look at me:smug:
gumby666-good work, you're right about the nose
And here is my second try and my pretty person:::evil:
Freespace-3DT

Joseph: Hey, that's a really accurate replica, you've got your proportions and your expression pretty much nailed. What I feel in it is a lack of skin details, even if you're a young person with smooth features.
gumby: Keep it up, the mouth and chin are right where they should be. The nose could be a bit thicker toward the top, so you might want to watch that area.
mafida: Come on, the reference is actually your sculpted head with textures and a light system. It's too accurate, man. Don't make me get my mod-guns. ;P

i think these are great, and actually, i've been thinking that self portraits by artists have not always been exact representations of themselves, but sometimes they can be more expressive. i'm also thinking stylised self portraits might be fun for those who aren't too keen on realistic sculpting? just trying to get more people involved - looking forward to seeing more :)

Thanks everyone. I hear you Freespace and you are right. Lot of good work by everyone who has entered.
Lynette: allowing stylization would kinda turn it into something to similar to the last one. If one's afraid to show their ugly mug in all it's glory then one just doesn't enter. Seems we all have the same thoughts about our appearance and we worried not.
CHAO5: too perty for this:D grow a nasty beard or something.

Think mine need some work.
Might work on some clothes next... feeling a bit naked as I am now.
Think a hoodie might be in order.

Good work on the nose-looks better now:)For eyebrows i think i used standard brush with alpha 59(not sure about the number-this one with 5 vertical lines) and in brush options brush mod tuned to about 30 to add some pinch effect, then i added some volume to the eyebrows with inflat or standard brush without alpha. You have lots of time left so keep working -making some cloths is a good idea:)

I think people are just shy. :o
There's really no reason to be, though. This is a contest between artists, all the judging to be done is relevant to the art and skill with which everyone sculpted themselves.

dpunisher: You did a great job on the sculpt. The hair turned out well, really fluffy ;P, and all the little skin details add to the image. I think the lips could have used a bit more care, regarding the cuts in them, because everything else is so much more detailed. That's your fault for doing it so well. :)

Thank you, Freespace-3DT!
Yep, thanx for pointing that out! Actually spent more time on the lips :P ... and the hair was done in a hurry... i didn't even touch the sides of the hair, that can't be seen.. :D ... and looking at it now after what u said.. i think the ear and under the eyes are a little too 'clean' too...
Thanx :)

Freespace - I've started a sculpt, but I'm gonna be away for a week, so it'll be finished a day before the deadline. All I'm saying is please don't close the competition early :)
dpunisher - Nice job man. I'm actually gonna take a stand and disagree with freespace - for me the lips are the nicest part. I do see freespace's point regarding their fine detail, but I think the overall shape of them is very elegantly observed. The thing that jumped out a bit to me is the length of the neck, just seems a bit long compared to your reference photo. Minor issue though, it's a very good job overall.

Hi Everyone, great news: extension!!
As we have a Bank Holiday here in the UK rolling its way towards us (woohoo!), we thought we'd give you all some extra days to work on your sculpts, and extend the deadline as follows. So no excuses, you've got all weekend to get sculpting - enjoy! :D
Extended Deadline: 5th May 2009, 12:00 PM BST (GMT+1 - http://wwp.britishsummertime.co.uk/)
*Edit* Oh yes, and the Final Submissions thread is also ready, here: http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=66813 :)

Yay an extra few days!!
Not sure if I'll get time over the weekend but I only have an hour left so I should be able to squeeze it in.
Here's my WIP after 4 hours. Wasted some time on the hoodie and then ended up redoing the whole thing. My first attempt at clothes so it's not great.
Wish I had a more interesting face to play with. I'd like to try it again when I'm 70 and have more wrinkles etc.
Please give me crits as I'm only new to Zbrush and any hints would be very welcome.

I think you could perhaps work on the eyes a little; the lower part looks really great and a good likeness, but you could maybe work on the eyes to give them some extra life. For example, in the photo you have one of your eyes open wider which gives a really interesting expression which you could play with in your sculpt! You could also perhaps play at getting a hint of stubble in the sculpt, to reference your pic, and maybe work on the eyebrows a touch? Best of luck, hope you find the last hour for this, looking forward to seeing the final :)

ermm, I believe that Freespace wants you to show your ref. with your final, so be creative - you don't need to show a large image of yourself with your final - just a small one will do. have a play around and see what works :)

Well, all final submissions in the final thread must be attached, so just go ahead and attach your sculpt as one image, and a picture of yourself that you used for reference. Just like Lynette said, it doesn't need to be large, just enough for us to see it looks like your sculpt, and vice-versa. :) Looking forward to your work.
Hi!
I've started my sculpting lessons with Alex Oliver two weeks ago (one class per week) and I like very much this challenge because with this I hope I can improve my studies.
I can manage the hours in the way that I need? For example: I think that I'll start this today but I have only 3 hours to do this, the remaining hours can be used another day? Or the time must be used entirely from when I start?
(I hope you can understand my english)
Best regards

Yes, that's right, you can spend the time staggered if needed - you don't have to do it all in one stint. Best of luck, we look forward to seeing your entry! Please do post some WIPs along the way :)

Thanks for the crits, I definitely agree about the eyes. I realise now that they have been bugging me but I just didn't realise it. At the moment I do look a little undead so I'll try and work some life into them.

Masking usually works well to close the mouth
aby arty
01-05-2009, 08:37 AM
thnx Mak sir
i mean do we use tweak brush or standard?
and how to add the eyes correctly?
aby arty: Try this - mask the bottom or the top of the mouth and then move another part with the move brush, when the lips are almost close remove the mask and use the inflat to tweak the shape (use it carefully, otherwise will mess everything).
I hope it helps, it's the way that I do!
dPunisher
02-05-2009, 08:54 AM
i think i do the lips just like RZC says... easer to close them at a lower sub-levels than higher levels..
eyes... add tham as a SubTool... and use Move/Scale/Rotate... to get them once u've got ur eyes the way they r in ur portrait.
i used a picture (960*720 the doc size in Zbrush) opened in (Win Pic and fax viewer)... then alt+tab between Zbrush and the pic to get shapes correctly... (cheating? :P)
better get at least front/side and 3/4 view pics of ur self...
used Tweak to get the shapes right... and Standard/Pinch with Lazy mouse to do details..
to do skin texture.. used Brush: Stardard with stroke: DragRect with some dotted Alpha..
... that's how i did my one... i'm sure there r better ways... :)
aby arty
02-05-2009, 05:16 PM
firstly , thnx for clarifying in elaboration , RZC and Dpunisher sir,
about closing at lower levels, iam not too sure cause whn i divided after closing the lips they opened up in the resulting lvl.
yes iam using alt tab too XD, but only got front ( my camera went kaput so no more snaps), though ill consult my hand mirror for profile.
umm what is lazy mouse and how to do moustache?
dPunisher
03-05-2009, 04:58 AM
Yes yes.. u still have to do changes at higher levels for the lips .. but u can still use the mask used in the lower levels.. try pressing the alt Key while using the Tweak brush.. it'll pull in opposite direction .. u'll have to try to understand... :)
same with Lazy Mouse u'll have to try and see (u'll get the hang of it very fast!)... it's like add-on to each brush... helps to do stuff smoothly... i use this with the Standard brush or the Pinch..
To use LazyMouse:
select the one u want (Standard/Pinch/Slash1) - under Stroke (one of the top menu) - click LazyMouse... (click again if u want to remove that option) .... then drag a curved line across a model... u'll see... :)
for the moustache... if u have time ... or want to do each 'hair' use the Standard or Slash1 brush with LazyMouse (if u r using Slash1 press Zsub or press alt key while drawing...
if u want to do fast random hair use the Standard (without lazymouse) but with Stroke set to DragRect and there's a Alpha that has 5 random white lines use that (many times) ... u'll have to rotate to get the lines the way u want..

Ok all done on this one... think I bit off more than I could chew, was literally dripping with sweat to try and get it done in the amount of time
Anyway, the skin peeling thing is a reflection on either my interest in anatomy, or my obsession with mortality. Probably both...

Photos with wip... starting with a mirrored photo to make the symmetrical stage easier -
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/4350/frontsymcompare.jpg (http://img17.imageshack.us/my.php?image=frontsymcompare.jpg)
And then my best attempt at a "bemused and interested" look. Made difficult by my complete inability to move my eyebrows, and the face I was trying not to smile...

Lord McGoat, that's a great entry. Well done! The metaphor is sweet, too. Really cool ripping effects in there. Sorry to hear the 6 hour time limit was a bit stressful. Initially it was 5! :) Me ( and the other sculpting challenge mods ) are always open to suggestions either in the suggestion thread, or in the actual competition thread for tweaking and balancing out stuff.
Allright everyone, don't forget to submit your work in the Final Submissions thread here: http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=66813 - there's just a couple of days left, and most of you haven't submitted your entry there.

Thanks very much for the kind words freespace and mafida.
Forgot to mention, but if anyone's interested, the forearm and ripped skin in my hand are the teeth meshes.
I think the time limit and competition structure is fine freespace. The 5-6 hour mark is perfect because it means that over a month even the busiest people are gonna be able to find time to squeeze it in. Just getting a likeness is always a fight, and doing it under a time limit is inevitably going to be stressful - for me at least :) That doesn't make it any less of a rewarding experience in the end though.

sweet work goat. I always forget that it's ok to do conceptual stuff while self portraitizing (sure that's a word)
Looks like attendance is a bit down this time around during DomWar. I'll try to spend a couple hours some time this evening and get a self portrait done.
I'm at gmt -8 so that means i gotta submit by 6AM on the 5th right? or is it 5 or 7 because of DST? I'll just get something in tonight before i get to bed to be safe.
