Where have I been? Nothing like a stylish late entrance.
Here are a few quick ideas thrown at you, can't really decide which to go with personally, but time (and you, the fellow artist) will tell which is most appealing.

i like the bottom left. and top right. Those look cool to me and seem like would have cool weaponry and armor design. the top left is too kiddish (baloon beign teh main reason) and the bottom right is just a beast (no armor, weapon. seems like a pet without a master)

I gotta say, I like the idea of the demon balloons, darb. That could be really wicked; or maybe not "balloons" per se, but various demon heads tethered to a character. Like a demonic dog walker, or something? That's a great idea, man. Bagpipe hero seems like a great idea as well.
Now, whether you'll be able to do it justice, I can't say...:D
Oh, and be sure to mess with your profile to link this thread to your signature. So whenever you go commenting on people's work they can do you the same courtesy easier, instead of having to dig through the forums to find ya. Also, get your thumbnails on the Dominance War website, yea? If you don't do that, your entry won't count for Team 3DTotal...or at all, actually.

I really don't know if I could do the balloons justice... so I may go towards another concept for the final. those intestinal balloon strings would be a nightmare to rig properly and pose. It actually was more of a "look, Toad has 7 chain chomps handcuffed to him, let's see what happens!" type of thing. So good call.

One more thing, Darbs. If you haven't checked out the Maxscript/Plugin thread for D-War warriors, you should. It's time to bulk up Max; at the very least, you should get some UVW tools like TurboUnwrap (remember how Dave...or Chuck?...used to talk about Chugnuts?) or UnwrapTools1.50

Actually, I believe my inspiration for this and the Murlocs was the same, play any FF(insert number) game or MMO and most likely close to half of the creatures, and sometimes a lot more, are based off mainstream or obscure european folklore. LINKAGE (http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Grindylow) Just reading some of these crazy folk tales can lead you to some interesting concepts.

The Kelpie was originally a water spirit in Scotland (that happened to be a horse), but now that I've gotten a second look after some sleep, I get your point. (Also it's not exactly a horse anymore.) I will do another revision of these two tomorrow.
Thank you for the support all. More coming tomorrow.

Hey darbs, I came up with a second idea (since you're doing my first) that requires other forums' logos, and I ran the idea past Big Toe and it's totally doable (so long as everyone knows your guy fights for Team Threedy). Anyway, I hunted down the Polycount and GameArtisans logos high-res (I think they're TGA's too), so head on over to my thread to pick 'em up:
http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?p=708841#post708841
You'll have to troll other forums if you're going to use their logos on your headhunter-esque "Ear necklace, but with logos". Or reproduce them yourself from the tiny pics on the Dominance War site. Good luck trolling the Korean, Russian, and other non-english sites! :D

no, never.
and yes, i am very apprehensive of this fact, though more of the texturing than the unwrap. but at the rate i am working, should begin unwrapping this weekend and texturing monday-ish. that should give me a nice chunk of time to texture my heart out (KfE! gave me some needed painting practice.) so we shall see how it goes.

instead of the necklace, maybe go with a "ear" belt, it will allow you to make the logos larger. Or even an "ear" scarf that goes over the shoulder and down around the waist.

Ooh, liking the giant planes, I'm sure those will texture nicely, with a little alpha maybe and some nice soft lighting. Maybe add one under the arm pits too, they are a cool element.
The only crit from me would maybe raise the feet up a little bit. They look a little flat right now, but if the "sole" of the foot were raised up a bit more, it'd look more like they are carrying weight.

could you explain a bit more what you mean exactly, i modeled some webbing planes in between the toes, so it makes the feet look a bit off. I could lengthen the toes, perhaps?

Freaky looking stuff, but that's totally what you were going for:) It looks pretty clean too. Also, I second PuckDucker - I think you should put some planes between the arm and the body and put another fin there, a la the ones for the ear and crown...thing. Not a lot - about how much Spidey has in the Spectacular Spider-Man 'toon, maybe. Though you're running out of a tris - Can't believe you're actually putting in mouth sacs; does that mean you're gonna do the morph targets for some reason? Maybe you should optimize him a tad - don't want the bandolEAR to not be as detailed as the rest of him, eh?
Also, have you considered poking around 3DTotal for job inquiries? You do know there's a section for freelancers on the forums right? Kinda forgot to mention it...ever...:D My bad.
Darbruce
24-04-2009, 07:38 AM
I can always optimize them a bit, but im only doing the mouth sac for the beast and rigging it like i did the rottweiler i had in my portfolio (ponytail bone for the jaw.) so no morphs needed for that.
as for the finer stuff, I'm getting to it now, and I should have enough tris to pull off a decent bandolEAR in the end as is, though a few loops may need to come out of both models. (good thing I 86'd the breastplate and other armor pieces in favor of the tribal look.)
pit fins, really? the spectacular spiderman has almost non-existent lats! he needs the pit web to look manly. now this guy... well ok maybe.

I'm not familiar with you're past work, so I can only guess going by the quality of your sketches but I think you could sell these as nicely stylized. I think the models themselves have enough character that you could go with just a color/diffuse map, and some nice stylized textures, maybe even 100% self-illum style. Not cartoony, but a nice semi-realistic stylized look. Just a thought. :)

current progress as of like 5 minutes ago.
unwrap done for all parts of the entry, packed and ready to roll, Warlock's suggestion got me thinking on what i actually want this guy to look like style wise, and i made some custom cel-shaders in MAX to get my thoughts across.
the left sphere is your standard render with normals, AO, spec, etc.
the middle sphere is cel-shaded with just a color(diffuse) map,
the right sphere is cel-shaded with normals, color, spec, AO, etc.
i'm torn between full on cartoony and a mix of cartoony and realism. If anyone has any thoughts or preference hit me up, plz. I'll be working on the color map.

well, if its a shader your playing with, do both. For the war, you would do better going more real, at least that's what most people will be doing. But, if you want to stand out, hit them foos (the judges) with a freeze pop, then go with the cartoony feel.

Nice, super clean unwrap. As for the style, I say full blown - totally rightmost sphere; "everything but the kitchen sink" approach. AO map, cel shaded, diffuse, etc. Also, I think it fits with your design - it's clearly weird and unrealistic (the cartoony), but you come from the Styers school of thought, so he could theoretically function (the realistic). It SHOULD look like the new Prince of Persia or Borderlands when you're done, which is guaranteed to 'pop'.
Btw, speaking of Borderlands, have you talked to Chuck lately, Darbs? E3's coming up; our more successful friends should be busy right about now...
Oh and also, you're BLAZING man! However, remember, the deadline is May 11th, buddy! Keep an eye on the calendar.

Shader test. Textures about 40-45% done in the last day and a half, should take less than the next two days to polish up. got a rough normal that needs tweeking on it, but so far, its progressing nicely on that end.

Make sure you put some kind of marking over the other team logos - like a red "X" or something. Just to make sure there's no confusion over what team he fights for. That style is crazy man - you're well on your way to pulling off a Borderlands/Prince of Persia-esque work. I suggest looking at a ton of screenshots from POP and getting as much reference as possible to see how much they paint onto their texture.
Especially now that the D-War has been extended - who saw that coming!?! If only Bush was in charge of this war - he'd put up a 'Mission Accomplished' banner on the 11th whether or not we were all done, and that would be the end of that. Right? Anyone? =)

11-05-2009, 03:44 PM
hahaha, truthiness, but yeah, i have been checking out what they do with painting the textures and I am honestly thinking of starting over as soon as the new sculpts are done (used Zbrush this time, Mudbox can go to Helheim) but i was planning on using some polypaint to get the base colors laid out and going from there, now idk if thats the smart thing to do at this stage, but we shall see.
blood spatters and tally marks are so better than X's. I'm not done yet sir.
also, *note to self*, do not ever again wait 'til the last minute and try to learn yourself some Zbrush in 4 hours. STUPID IDIOT.
Looks good so far. I'm looking forward to see your work on the textures as soon, as possible. :-)

13-05-2009, 04:12 AM
FINALLY, normals, cavity, and color maps are as close as they are going to get. specular, as you can see is about 45% done at this stage. still need to drop in fine details like BLOOD, but hopefully thats it, the shader's done and the pedestal is ready, just need to skin these bass tards (no pun) to their respective rigs and light the scene.
never ever again will i get the bright idea to teach myself an entirely new 3d package when a deadline is only a week-ish off...

Y'know it's funny you mentioned Helheim (whatever could Mudbox have done to **** you off so much!?!), 'cuz I'm playing through Tomb Raider Underworld right now. Rad game - terrible story, but it (for some reason) has something to do with Nibelheim and Helheim. Which, apparently, are in Thailand - Vikings TOTALLY got there first, dude! :D
Nah, but seriously, it's rad. I'd still say Legend (and Anniversary) are definitely better though. Underworld seems rushed, 'cuz it's got some glitches and major collision/animation issues (relatively). You should try and play it when this is all done and you got some free time on your hands. Oh, and you can sticky bomb tigers, so there's that:D

@ Warlock - i gueeeessss, there were some but i must have done too much alpha-ing, and idk how much more time i am going to devote to the texture, depends on how fast i get the skin done.
@ Vince - Dude, seriously, I told you I played that game like 5 months ago, and it peeved me the frak/frell off that they basstardized norse mythology that way. It was original for a tomb raider game though, props to that. But tying Avalon, Helheim, Niflheim, and god knows what else, (Hades? Hindu Hell?) all together to explain the same "Ancient Culture"? I'm not buying it. and everyone knows there's nothing on Jan Mayan except volcanic rock, now if they had transposed that to Spitzbergen, I would have bought it a bit more.

Don't know how far along your are with your lighting, but a nice rim light never hurts for wet/slimy skinned creatures.

Yea, the new pose is totally working. Very dynamic, no weird silhouette problems anymore (like the top pic, where the tangent issues with the weapon make it look like he has guitar from the back). It's dynamite, man!
Now all you need is some kinda mood lighting. If at all possible, may I suggest putting a reflective plane under the pedestal, so it looks like calm cave water or something. And lighting it like a watery cave would be moody and dramatic as well...

but seeing as how I've never worked with anything such as water, how to get the material to come out correctly is eluding me. i have working reflective surface, but it just looks like a mirror, and doesnt have specular on the ripples.
also, im thinking i may just make it a section of water, (like a liquid chunk of ice) instead to make it more pedestal-y.

are you working in max, try this, for the reflect and refract use a raytrace material. adjust each to get what you need. To add the ripple without adding geo, toss a cellular material into the bump slot. Up the tiling to something like 8x8x8 or whatever. You can then use a falloff under the spec slot, or keep it empty.
Keep in mind, the raytrace material will make it see threw, so adjusting that to the right see threwidness is key.
I'm playing with water as I write this, so it's on my mind.

meh, water's a pain, this is as close as i care to get, I'm with Vince, learning experience. lighting's getting closer to getting done, hopefully I'll be able to render out the beauty shot pose tomorrow so i can work on it in PS, the rest are just going to have to be as good as they can.

*note to self, the cel-shading is awesome, but it's starting to get lost, what to do? (also, on a side note to self, you would see more of the awesome normal you made if it didnt have a cel-shader on it.)

well, i cracked my face off of a very hard surface last night. (never do laundry at midnight when its really humid and the linoleum is slippery.) nose is swollen and cut up, so I can't wear my glasses for at least today. hopefully i'll see well enough to get the lighting rig done and render these bad boys out.
I am an idiot.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that and hope you'll be fine again, soon!
Your last picture looks great!

Pfft.
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTT, I say! You know I worked my last two weeks at Digital Embryo before caving to my failing kidneys legally BLIND! I'm 100% serious - I animated purely on the fact that Maya has a VERY RECOGNIZABLE gizmo and I had roughly remembered the UI, admist a sea of blur. If I could do that, you can light your model with a puffy, swollen face=)
...
Man, I miss work.
Anyway, what you have here is looking fantastic, sir. The water came out well enough, and the lighting is pretty much what I had in mind. It fits your model and it provides some nice ambience. Rock rock on!

Now that that has had time to sink in, thank you to all of you that gave me some great suggestions and feedback, everyone's a hero. Like you, and you, and mostly me, and you... but seriously, thanks.
Special Thanks to BiG ToE, Vinsanity, Warlock, and Withalboy. For the great suggestions that made this crazy ass design that much crazier.

Congratulations on finishing up, the final entry looks great. Doing two characters is very challenging, but you pulled it off well.

@ Puckducker - hey thanks man, it's definitely not something I'll want to do again next year, prolly hurt my chances of winning with the super low poly characters compared to others already submitted. Plus I need the practice on higher poly, my highest is only 6K.

Turned out pretty sweet. I'm really liking the shot with his hand on the pet, shows a nice interaction between the two. Don't really have any crits, its pretty well executed all around.
S'pose if I wanted to nitpick, I might suggest that the blood is a bit too bright, I'd think a deeper red would look better, and a little more splatter on the blade wouldn't hurt. I do think, with the tweaks you made and the the addition of the blood tho, that weapon is reading much better, to me at least.
You're more than welcome, I'm glad I could be of any help I could. :)
Yeah, splitting the budget is a rough thing to do, that's a road I've gone down too many times myself. You did well tho, and neither is showing any horrific faceting that I'm seeing.
You've never done a single character over 6k??? Guess we'll look forward to seeing you over in the 3DT LowPoly mini challenges once War is all wrapped up then. ;) [Says the person, who's only completing his second [maybe third] 6k+ character]

@ Warlock - haha, I know it's a bit sad, but I was taught old-school modeling (pre zbrush and mudbox) when i was in classes it Pitts. and that usually meant using max 6 and photoshop CS. painting verts on high polys straight into max? fun times. only recently did i even touch mudbox, and never bothered with Zbrush 'til like last week when mudbox decided to not work for this. i think my highest may have been right around 6200, but could have been much lower, average is around 4-5K.
I've already begun theme-pitching over in the low poly section, so JOIN US!
also, I may post some older stuff to show you guys crazy is as crazy makes. for kicks.
It turned out really great! These guys look just crazy. You really nailed your concept.
Congrats on finishing!

side note, Vinsane, you had best be in the nexy low poly challenge, even though you have plenty of Deep Sea to concept.
