The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4). You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

Heya there,

free morning, why not spend it modeling, right? :-) Nice topic, I will definitely do another one entry, because I am not fully satisfied with this one (I'll redo it later, because I like the idea and it deserves more time). I think the General Textures is a good one to start with, as are the Architectureal editions aswell.

I've got all of the texure CD's now and think they are essential for any modeller they are excellent quality, resolution and with so many different styles available can transform any modellers scene. :)

a lil question ^^: we can model everything that has an LCD in it ? :P

ClassicGamer-3DT
17-04-2009, 08:41 AM
hmmmmm...........well it has to be computer based, so think about all kinds of computer, Apple II's Apple Mac's, IBM 486's, Dell, HP, Packard Hell, etc.

I'll allow graphics tablets with paint on screens, LCD dual TV/PC screens aswell but that's about it ok :)

Soft: Modo, PS

ClassicGamer-3DT
17-04-2009, 02:52 PM
ClassicGamer, do you have something against Packard Bell? :haha:

Ah yeah lol, I had a Packard Bell as my first ever PC many many years ago and wen't it arrived I was very pleased with it etc. But after 6 months the master CD stopped working properly to format and re-instal windows, and I had mates at college at the time that had Packard Bell's that said they'd had the same trouble, turned out there was a huge batch of master CD roms that were shipped out that were duds and better still if you didn't do the clever thing like me and backup the master CD, they charged you for a replacement, even though it was the company's fault. That and many other accounts i've read about and heard about, everyone i've ever talked to don't like Packard Bell's :)

They are probably very nice high end PC's made now but this was 1996 onwards and it wasn't a powerful PC, I was still using Zip drives back then and floppy dics, no CDR's back then, not as commonplace as they are now, heck most PC's ship out with DVDR's /ROM Drives as standard, and i'm pretty sure in a year or 2 PC's will have Blu Ray drives and writer's as standard specs.

Ahem.......anyway back on topic now....

vladoportos very nice model, i've been looking into Modo and had a quick play and love it, it's very good, i'm not too keen on the viewport and some settings but I could happily see past those for the easy of use and modelling toolsets :)

CG.

vladoportos
17-04-2009, 03:46 PM
ClassicGamer-3DT Yea that viewport was problem for me also... as I switched from 3d Studio where it is completely different, couldn't move without quad view ( well modo have quad view as well, second tab ) but after a while I got to love it... I do all in that perspective view now, using only few scripts for alignments and that's it... What I really like in modo is texturing and sculpting mode, in 401 it will be even better.. ( I like it, but I don't have eye for materials and textures :( )... now I've got Zbrush on my mac and watching tutorials for it, but I don't think I can use it to make monitor

Here is my monitor I am currently working off of. VeiwSonic 22 inch LCD.
Done in Blender and that is my actual scene shot up there. I do feel old though... unless somebody else can say that their first computer was the Macintosh 128k? I loved that thing... I remember the first hard drive I got for it also, about the size of a shoe box and held a huge 10 megs! Ah, those where the days.

I had been computing a few years by the time the Macintosh 128K was released. My first was an Atari 400 with a BASIC cartridge and a tape recorder. I then moved into the Apple IIc. Then came the Macintosh, COCO, and TSR80 - Boy those were some hi-end computers back then. :grr:

The monitor's my xmas present from work (I work at Samsung), the rest is just my twisted imagination...

EDIT:I wanted the hands to be more realistic, but 90 minutes is a crunch! I was at 70 minutes when I started them, so please pardon the bad edge flows! I spent too long fiddling with the acrylic border!

vladoportos
19-04-2009, 05:01 AM
TXShawn I like it, good idea as well :) I would maybe mirror that hand holding the edge of screen made longer the leg out... it would give it more natural pose and give you more time, I think.... but I'm not expert... anyway I like it :)

Hi guys. Here's my entry. I hope you like like it. I used 3ds max 2009 for modeling and mental ray for rendering. Modeling took 25 minutes while lights/textures/render took a little longer since I'm still trying to learn mental ray.

hi everyone!
old style monitor, rough design and not too many settings, and lots of headache. that was the spirit of the 70's/80's computers.

modeling :1h 40 min : monitor - 35 min ; keyboard & main unit 105 min
texturing : 15 min
rendering : 5 min -vray
software: 3ds max 9

ClassicGamer-3DT
21-04-2009, 11:05 PM
vladoportos - I render in R11 because the Advanced Render module is much quicker, smoother and has little of no artefacts and great bucket rendering, Irradiance lighting and GI I model in R10 because it's what i'm still used to and because my R11 is the demo only.

Actually the monitor is what took 30 minutes, and that's only because I did it on my laptop at work. All of the other elements within the scene I did on my desktop(Athlon 5600 4gb ram PC6400) took about three hours because of tweaking.

It felt like my heart got ripped out when Modo crashed after I did most of the texturing and lighting... and found out that I hadn't saved.. :xx:

But I saw that the contest was extended and decided to give it another go. In the end it really didn't take all that long to re-do it,
since I remembered what I had done the first time around.

I'm glad I finished it though, I rarely enter contests. But I think I'm going to do my best to enter as many as possible from now on.

After reading CG words i've searched for something that makes him smile,and...you know, our great mod is a nostalgic and oldie one,so i think that a retro monitor for the contest would be a good thing! :D hope you get better soon my friend :D

done in maya within 90 min, rendered in maxwell and tweaked in photoshop, hope you like it too guys,as always c&c are welcome

EIT: BTW the bottom base of the monitor is just a mirror cut (a really useful tool that can be found in maya) of the tv chassis (the metallic part that hold the black plastic part of the monitor itself) so it takes just a few click and seconds to be done

Hehehe nice one, I particularly like this sentence

"Because the focus is modeling, materials and lighting are not vitally important, though some lighting is obviously recommended."

I saw in my mind automatically posting black image without light and telling it is some kind of supper model just you can't see it

Just a reminder today is the last day for this SMC, I will end this extended SMC tonight :)

The next one should be interesting and also a deceivingly difficult item(s) to model. Some things on first glance can look very easy to model until you actually try :)

More on that later on.....
