yees, kewl indeed!

lots of detail, i like it, post more!

only crit i have is that he seems perhaps a bit broad shouldered for an elf, but hey the elves in JRR Tolkiens series where probebly shaped more like this in their "youth" before they left, ugh, taht island, cant remember what is called  :p

Nice work. Great drawing skills and nice shading...my only crit is next time try to define a light source when shading and cast some deeper more dramatic shadows...i think it would compliment your drawings well and bring them to a new level. Can we see more of your work?

I looks great. To me something looks a little wierd with the arm, not sure what it is. I think that the chest is a little wider then it is supposed to be anatomicly-wise. Great attention to detail. only if I could draw like that.

Sorry about my other post, i was just kidding, maybe I should have added a smile.

The strange looking beast stoped in the middle of the alley, breathing hard, searching for a new victime. The small eyes stoped upon Minora and something like a cruel smile rose the huge fangs that grew along it's face..."

At first, only the big, yellow eyes of the minion were the only thing he could saw but soon the moonlight came to descent upon the greysh skin of a goblin. Yeah I reckon you draw some really top quality stuff, but in my opinion you could do with sorting the composition of your drawings before you draw them. It looks like you run out of space on the paper quite a lot, which is a shame. Otherwise, excellent.

Ido, look up, above the "Naga Queen" drawing, you have there the resources I use. About the 3d 'do... Well, I can model pretty good but I suck in texturing. I still learn to do the blasting thing. But I'll try to post a "Gollum" I've modeled some time ago. Search for it in the 3d art.

awesome work dude

what's your main technique for shadowing? can't really make out deifined crosshatching. are ya using a smudge stick or what is your magic?

Avatar-3DT
01-06-2003, 09:20 PM
I have in fact two tehniques: the main one I call it: "The pressure tehnique". It's how hard you press your pencil on the paper. Press harder for darker shadows, press less for difusse shadows. Important is to move slowly while pressing to create a black-white gradient.
The second tehnique is "The finger tehnique". Where there are spaces between my shadows I smudge with my finger until I fill those spaces with grey from the near by shadows. I use thise one pretty rarely, but is very effective. I try never to use erasers, they ruin the paper.

xeltestic
02-06-2003, 06:32 AM
i see...thx for telling me.
are u using also different kind of pencils with different hardness like hb, b, 2b, 4b, ....? are ya holding your pencil down flat on the paper for the shadows?
sorry for all the questions, im still xperimenting myself.
i read in several places that when drawing with a pencil u should avoid smudging cause graphite ain't really good for that (not like charcoal e.g.), but yours seem to turn out very nice. keep it on:D

Avatar-3DT
10-06-2003, 11:44 PM
No, I didn't took any classes - officialy. But I did study by myself different things, like anatomy, mythology and others, too many to speak about them here. I practice a lot and I'm blessed with great imagination.
No I don't plan a skeleton before start working, in fact I don't really plan. Maybe I start with the idea of making, let's say, a dragon. I buil around that character an entire story, asking myself why he's gotta look like that, could he really fly with those wings, how would he see, even how would think. And that's with all my characters. Sometimes I stand infront of a drawing long minutes, just "dreaming" about it. I have to make an efort to snap back to work.

sarN
11-06-2003, 03:05 AM
thanks for the tips hehe, yeah... i should study anatomy and that stuff especially, since sometimes i have a cool idea, but i screw up with the shape of the thing and it looks like crap half the time
once in a while i actually get the shape right (i dont have many pencils lol) and i come out with a picture i actually like
a lot of times when im attempting to draw something in a scene i imagine a sort of movie, and i put it in a box so i can get my views right
of course, like i said, they usually look like crap, and about the only thing i can draw is a dragon lol
something realistic like a person? fogeddaboudit
maybe its cuz when i was younger i used to practice drawing creatures, especially raptors (jurassic park!) which im gonna do tomorrow in school so i can attempt to model one
i think one of the most important things like you said is practice... and ive been spending too much tiem on stupid shcool work lol
thanks again avatar :D

sarN , don't ever think the "crap" you did in school will never come handy, you would be dead wrong. And when you wanna do a dragon, start with what you already know (a raptor!) and build around it. Put him wings, some hornes, some spikes on his back and, voila, you have a dragon.
DanielB, thanks for your kind remarcs, you realy made me blush. I prefere to think I'm not good enough.

wow, although i may lack the proper barriers between reality and fantasy i feel somehow more evil from looking at your work,

good thing there was the occasional (insert word here) piece in there, like the snail frm another world

i just dont like thinking sometimes,,

now on the other hand awsome work the creativity you display makes me feel small and at the same time motivated to keep on with my art as i may oneday be able to express myself as you do.

top stuff, excellent work, you are indeed a rare breed of human, i hope you live to have children and pass on what you have learned,

rage, I'm happy you visit my post again, buddy! I've kindda miss me here for sometime:p

DanielB, you could be right. Some said its looking like Spawn. Thinking about it could be a Spawn-Venom combination. So I'll kill him an start another character. I don't want to make unoriginal characters. It's kindda hard this days to create a new superhero.

TyKeil was not my intention to make you feel evil, au contraire! But I'm happy if I can inspire you. I didn't knew what word to put between the comas so maybe you'll iluminate me somehow.
You have no reason to feel small, but to become more determinate to impruve yourself. As for me having children... I'm still very young to think me as a dead person. I love children but for now I have nothing to offer them so I guess I will stay single for a while more.
Here's a more stilized drawing that, paradoxal, liked to a lot of people.

thanks, and keep the drawings flowing :)

Part of them are my inner demons, part of them are heroes like I would like to be, others are drawings made when i was bored and had nothing to do. Yes, the size of the paper is A4, but sometimes I cut from it and the size is fluctuant.

wow, insane detail!

only a few crits :P
there seems to be little "depth" and its hard to see whats in front of what, now im asuming that the drake is being fought by all three heroes? however the dwarf looks like he is about to attack the warrior with the sword.. and in my opinion the half finished one looks better, cus you can tell whats going on much easier, the dragon looks simply incredible in that one... in the finished piece all the other detail takes away from what i feel should be the main focus of the drawing...

so once again, friggin cool work by Avatar (hurry up and post more!! :P)

edit:i mean four heroes...

evil, EvEr, lol my brothers! You took a boulder off my soul! This picture was an experiment. The picture was suppose to creat sensation like confusions and moovement. It seems that you couldn't focus because al of the ditails. It's like in a real fight: too much, too fast.
Now, evil, if you look at the dwarfs feet you will see that he is climbing stairs. The knight and the dragon are on some sort of a plateau; The witch is also on a small plateau and the archer is much back (as it has to be) and he is just rising the bow. See where the tip of the arrow points? He's not ready to shoot.

My advice is to copy the drawing and to take a look at every character individualy before you try to see the entire scene.

Here is some character to cleanse your eyes after too much detail :D

Pice of the letter of sir Agrabant of Lorenslis to lady Syelin, the half elfe:
"I writte to you again, my lady of a thousand tears, for this is thy name in my crying heart. It's been a month since thy radiant face has not brought smile upon my lips. Knowing of thy pain I cannot close eyes and sleep is running away for I suffer with you. Do mourn your loss but search upon the things to come and rise upon suffering to smile into the rising sun. I beg to the gods, in my dispair, to guide my destiny and my steps closer to your abode so we can finally join..."

Tomorrow is N'Naggy day fellows! The ugly, mean sonoftehbitch is coming at last. Meanwhile, to keep you on the thread, a robot I've draw for a freind; keep in mind that this is a sketch for him so please, do not use it to create copys of the sketch or models. Awsome art. You are very good. I think what Tykeil is saying is her face is at a 3/4 view but the nose and mouth is draw just off from straight. Not the contour of the face, just the nose and mouth.

Avatar-3DT
02-08-2003, 02:07 AM
In that case he could be right. I was not paying to much attention when I drawed her. I was just felt the need to draw a woman. I guest she looks like that because of the shading. A deeper shadow on her right side of the face would be able to correct that.
Ok, I'll try to pinpoint the defect and to adjust it. Thank you Rick and TyKeil for being so attentif and sensitive. Now, that is constructive criticism!

First of all - I really like your art - you have a great imagination. I would only suggest that you practise the perspective - it's sometiomes not very convincing.

About the lady - I think her left eye ( our right ) is too high... and I would suggest more shading - the hair would use the highlights. Experiment with lighting.

When you draw - try to visualize the thing you draw like a mesh in a 3d programme, try to see the perspective in everything - even the face. If you don't have the 3d programme - this is serious what I will tell you now - draw lines on your or your model face and draw it WITH those lines in different poses - from top 3/4, side 3/4, en face, slightely nod...and whatever comes to your head. It's a great practise, I was told to do it by my prof. I hope it'll help you.

I look forward to your other drawings.

One more thing - you gave me a kick to make it ( all rights reserved for Reverie Entertainment ) ;)

Michael-3DT, yhank you for your kind advice, be sure I will take account of it. And you are right. I don't know if is the "all monster" policy I've run my art till now, or just plain tiredness (I go to sleep at 5 o clock in the morning every day and sleep around 5 hours) but there is something definetly wrong with my lady and I think you've pointed it out. And aldo I not a big fan of schools tehniques I will try what you suggested. I'm always eager to learn. The hard way if necesary. I expect your crits anytime.

evil_radish thank you also, you are right too. But my shading tehnique is intentional. Through it I induce confuzing feeling and a certain dizzyness to the viewer. Remember, some things look better only if you see them between your eyelids.
As for perspective, I think I'll just find my self a girl to model for me. Hopefully we'll do nudes also. :D

"I got berserk with perspective and proportions. Brrrr. The more I watch her the more I ask my self what was in my mind?"

Ummm.... she's allright, there are just some TINY bitses out of perspective, that's all. Those little details make her look like I wrote.

Human mind is a living thing - it can create great things, but it gets tired. If you will look at something that you work on, you get to loose your objectiveness, flaws that are on the pic don't hurt your eye so much comparing to when you are fresh, when you slept well and have a "fresh eye". So I would like to suggest you that you sleep more, and always make corrections the day after you make something. Or ask someone to have a look at your work and say what's wrong.

About those school techniques - they aren't so frequently used, I must say - making lines on the face. I just made my prof. say some advices, he actually didn't say it to anyone else. The "3d mesh visualisation" is just the way I put it. Look at some good ink art - they shade the geometry with curves; when you would make the 3d model out of it and make the same pose, you would see that the lines are almost the same. Try that.

Thanks for appreciation, evin_radish.;)

Ey, michael, great advices! I'm also new on drawing by hand, i sure could use some advice. I possess so many ideas but I don't have the technique or artistic mind to make something out of 'em! I've only done photomanips in Photoshop so far (pretty good at it since i've done it for many years), but one have realized the limits of expressing oneself this way. I'm trying to learn some digital painting and 3d, but it get's harder then necessary when you have noone to ask or get proper crits from. I can't even draw by hand... yet i'm trying. Looking at other drawings, trying to copy them. A photo in the background, drawing over it - trying to learn the outlines and shadings of objects.

Do you have some pages with sceetchpractises and advices?

Cheers

ClAyMan, exercising is the best way to learn. So take it easy and draw a lot. Copying things is another great way to learn - for starters - but take care, you can get addicted. As for your imagination, just putt it in practice. There's no better way to satisfy yourself. And if something does not look right, draw it again and again until you have your desired effect.
About the crits... Just make yourself a thread, post some of your work, and we, the voultures, we'll soon be around "peaking" at your art :D

Yeah, i know that "practice is the way to success" and so on, but i don't have the patience to keep drawing that same object over and over again! Hell, i haven't even completed a whole 3d-model yet - lack och patience (and technique?) i guess. I want to know everything NOW, be able to draw everything NOW! Aaaah! *going insane*

I'll try draw a simple box and rotate it a few degrees and draw it again... i'll probably smash the hand together with the pencil and paper in the wall after 5min, but it feels nice to say "i'll try!" for the moment :) Would be cool if anyone, with more skills, could do the same thing and post it here, just to get some reference (...and a person to direct the anger and frustration at) ;)

Off to work now, greets

I don't know a faster way, sorry. Sometimes I wish I could draw faster than the speed of light but I know I can't so I learned patience. There is no need to draw over and over the same drawing, but the same character, improving it every time.

As I've promised, the werewolf.

ClayMan - try this - buy yourself a wooden puppet, that has evey joint movable. Pose it in some simple position for the start and ... draw it AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE. Then - turn it 30 degrees left and draw again. Try lots of different views. BUT... that needs patience.

You can learn patience, you know.... ;) Just draw. :D

xeltestic, at first I wanted to make sharp long claws, so long that could touch the ground, but I've decided to go with smaller claws, long enough to ripp anybody appar 'tho. Glad you like it. As for genitalias it was pretty easy. "He" is a "she". :D

Michael-3DT great advice with the puppet. Maybe I will use it too. As for the shadows, I use a pencil, so the only way to make the shadows darker would be tweaking them on photoshop. Thank you for your professional hints, be sure I'm all ears. It would be even better if you have some examples to show me.

Well... I use different types of pencils - 2H for the skin in light to make it "fleshy", HB for the first sketch and base shading, then 2B for midtones and 8B for deep shadows. This will make the shadows really deep. Then tweaking them a bit with levels in PS and voila...;)

Mike, I live in a small town of a small country. The comerciants here bring only the merchendise that sells out and I must say to you that it would be useless to try to find those kind of pencils. But as soon as I will travel to the capital I'll have those in my list. All that I've used was a 0,5 HB mine. Don't think I'm cheap or something but I must organize myself around the resources I have.

Freshly out of my drawing board, still smoking: Thorr the Thunderouse, God of War and Thunder, keeper of aliances, protector of Middleearth (Midgard), host of Valhalla. A guy you don't want to mess with and my favorite god of all mithology. In his right hand, Mjolnir, the mighty iron magic hammer, forged by the Nibelung Dwarfs for the god himself.

very nice sketch......Thor is my favourite norse god too......no offense but i always prefered to look at him in a superman built.....and i always pictured a much larger hammer head for Mjolinir...thats a personal opinion......great work though.
I'd love to see ur take on the midgard serpent or the Fenrir wolf.

Realy nice! You ain't even from up north, yet you know so much about our ancient mythology.

Realy nice sceech, would love to see Oden, Fenrir wulf or Valhalla (spelling? only know the Swedish therms...).

Actualy, don't know if you know it, Thors' belt and mjolnir often have swastikas; it's taboo to write 'em nowadays, but as a little info :)

hells angel, Thorr was a party man. He liked to eat and drink a lot. Do you know how a party in Valhalla looked like? Ok, let me tell you: All the great viking warriors stood at a long, unfashioned wood table, with Thorr in the head of the table. They eat and drink all day long and, when the day was over, they steped outside, in a large courtyard and slash each other to death. Then Thorr revived them all and they start the party again till the next sunset. Cool, no?
As for the hammer... Mjolnir was iron made. Not steel, not anything else: iron. So it was pretty heavy. And it was magical. Not even Thorr couldn't touch it without wearing a glove. It beared in it the power of thunder, so the size (in this case:)) didn't matter.

ClAyMan, aldo I'm not what you can call a norsman, I kindda look like one. I'm not very tall (1,72 m), but I'm blonde and I have blue eyes. And recent the english history studies tried to trace back the origin of the arian people. And my ancestors, as the vikings, descend from the boreean people, the original arians. So we are somekind of cousins my people and yours.
And yes, I know about swastiks but I don't need to tell you why I didn't draw them. On all the mithologies the swastiks are simbols of life and the way of the univers. Nazists perverted this symbol and the world is one benevolent symbol shorter.
I know a lot about nors mythology. I love the fact that this is the only mithology where the gods, aldo powerfull, know there must be an end to their existence.:D :D :D :D

Your picture of Thor is really great, it's a wonderful drawing, the whole thing just oozes quality. Congratulations on a great pic.

So what next ? I'd love to see some more Norse mythology drawings Avatar. Maybe a picture of Thor fighting Jormungand the Midgard serpent on the day of Ragnarok ? Or Odin fighting Fenrir, or just drawings of Surt the fire giant and Hymir the sea giant ??

Mythology is such a great subject to take inspiration from. Let us know what your plans are next, i for one will be very interested to see your next drawing :D

Rych, he lookes short because he is a "round" man and because there is nothing to compare him with. You have quite a point there; so I'll add something to the drawing to take out that feeling. Thanks my man!

Jazzy, I see you are a norse mithology fan also. Well, I was planning in time to draw all Asa and Vana, to make a portrait of Helja on Naglfar, reapping the clouds towards Asgard. Maybe some valkyries, maybe Loki... I must put some order into my plans first.

Jazzy
01-09-2003, 06:33 PM
Wow Avatar, it sure sounds like you'll have your work cut out if you're planning to draw all those characters from Norse mythology.

I think the Valkyries could be a really interesting subject, beautiful women warriors on winged horses ........ flying around searching the battlefields for the bravest of slain warriors .... so they can take the Einherjar to Valhalla ....

I think light could play a big part in a scene like that. I read somewhere that people believed that the Valkyries' armour causes the Aurora Borealis and with that whole sort of transition from Midgard to Valhalla ..... it would be similar to the sort of passage to heaven in biblical stories. Well, it could be anyhow :D

Avatar-3DT
02-09-2003, 01:45 AM
I new about the Aurora Borealis and the Valkyries armors but that would be kindda hard to represent in black and white. Instead I think I'll do a daughter of Odhinn kneeled near a dying viking warrior, kissing his forhead.
I guess we, norse fans, get togeder on this, ha? :D

jbsniff, if I would be a company I would hire myself:D .
I know your 3d work but I didn't know you draw too. The sketches are cute and they will do great for a short animation if you have a script for them. As for my drawings, believe it or not is all depending on my mood. If I'm struck with some great ideea and I'm afraid that if I'll stop I'll loose it I don't stop till is finished. Otherwise I draw 10-15 minutes then I do something else, after an hour or two I draw again for a while and so on. It may take me 2-3 hours or 10, 12 hours per drawing.
And now my dream creature.
I call them Night Maidens. I cannot give you the feeling I have in my dream seeng those creatures flying above my courtyard, but it was awsome. The colors are made in photoshop, the background is just a picture which, unfortunaly, I don't know the artist.
Hey, Daniel, look, I draw in Photoshop with the mouse! Am I crazy or what?!

jbsniff

jbsniff, maybe my problem is that I draw only from my head. I got problems with the perspective also (Mike can testify on that) but its not a thing that is too hard to learn. At least for me. As I said, this is what I've dreamed about one night.

DanielB, to be completly honest with you, I didn't draw this with the mouse, just applied the colors. Here is the original draw that I've scanned and then colored with photoshop.

would you mind making something like a tutorial ?

Like making another drawing and scanning it's progress all 5 to 50 minutes or whenever you enter a "new stage".(from first 10 lines to concept stage to finished drawing) So we could see how you work, if you use help-lines wich are rubbed out later, or if you draw the overall shape and then go into details step by step or topdown or whatever :)

I would realy appreciate this... and im sure others would as well.

sarN, in fact the scar was my choice. In real life you cannot have that kind of scar without loosing the eye or just the sight of that eye. But in movies and drawings that kind of scar makes a guy look though. So, thats why the scar.
Oh, ofcourse, it could have beed across the face, or only spliting the chin 'til under the eye, but I prefere this one. Subjectif choice.
DanielB, thanks man.

MrArmless
11-10-2003, 04:29 PM
Not that Odd ever, that werewolf is headed for campfire to feed on some poor humans.. in fact he's pretty close now, that's why the shadows are as they are.. ;) (isn't that right?)

those backgrounds really help put a finishing touch to a drawing, the lighter shade of grey doesn't overwhelm the image as much as to distract from the main subject but complement them nicely.

EvEr666 in fact you're right buddy! But I had to sacrifice real illumination for scenic effect because the character was already done and, putting the moon in the corect position for his illumination, would have take it out of the page. So...

"The road proved to be rough. The winter struggled yet with the first signs on spring. But Yelotty, the Grand Priestess of Galatheon was summoned before the High Council of the Seven and, despite the war between the dwarfs and the gnols and the perils of the road in those times, she had to travel with only a handful of guards over the peaks of Shimallan Mountains, over the half frozen river of Katurrian border".

Michael-3DT, thanks for the crits. You are right. I'll add some darkness with pencils. I use photoshop for scanning and to adjust a little bit the levels and the brightness/contrast. I don't know about those autographs, I'm not in for fame. For glory maybe, but not for fame. And if will ever be the case (aldo I don't think so), it will be my pleasure. I've learned alot from your crits.

I'm a relative newcomer and my drawing skills were great as a child... they then got "put on the backburner" for a while and I'm making a come back now :) it is really great to know that you haven't had any formal training... I really thought that I was at a big diss-advantage for not being "taught" but your work goes to show that formal training isnt needed...

man Avatar, 3 new ones! lol I love the one with the werewolf, I dunno, I've always been a sucker for the whole werewolf/vampire gothic type mythology. The one for antioch seems to not have ennough contrast yet, but I'm sure you'll make it as impressive at the others I'm sure.

As for the training in the drawing art, I have to tell is always welcomed. My self-training was as if I was fallowing an artschool: knowing the muscles and the way they bend and strech, the proportions of every body part and of the faces I was drawing... So you're in for a ride my friend. You'll have to be a stuborn and a curiouse being to pass the test the Art has lied before you. Take it a an initiation. At the end you'll be better.
I thank you for your best wishes and may the best wishes be bestowed upon you and the ones you love.

DanielB, in fact just a new one. The other two are just redone. As for the last one, it's just a minor problem. To be honest, it will take me 5 minutes with the pencils and about 3 with photoshop to fix the problem. Maybe tomorrow I will fix the problem. And just for you, I will soon draw a vampire.

Amazing Amzing AMAZING work ...

Amazing really isn't the proper word to use.

I bow to your talents and admire each work with mounds of respect and honor.

I know I can't draw to 1/100000000000th of the scale you can ... so seeing it done and done on a regular basis ... really stuns a person. You probably don't realize what you mean to alot of the lesser skilled people out there. It gives me hope to know that there is a point that I can work towards. It gives people like me goals.

You are a true craftsman and devine artist.

Keep drawing and keep us posted ;)

AND GET A WEB SITE ALREADY!!!!!!!!

Thank youoompa_loompa, I touched by your trust, but I'm as humble like you as I dear to glaze upon wonderful work as Da Vinci's or Michelangelo. They are the true artist, depicting life in such way it touches our souls not only with the level of details, but with the color, the movement and the story behind every masterpiece.
Imagination will be enough if you want to excel, for imagination will make you desire to share with the world your dreams. You'll have to work alot, but a smile and a kind word (like yours now) will be a greater price than any sum you will ever receive.
So keep up the work and make your dreams come true.
Thank you.
