so... I have a question. what makes a matte painting different than a 3d rendered scene? or a simple photoshopped image?

Hey EpiPlayer, whats up man?

Well a mattepainting is actually both a 3D rendered scene and a Photoshoped Image. It can also be either of both. The main and huge difference is that a mattepainting (ideally and most of the time) is Photo-realistic. It also (ideally) doesn't have any major moving element like people, cars, animals, or anything of that sort.

I placed Ideally there since in real world mattepainting, these animated elements are composited and 80-90% of the mattepainting work is Photo real.

At the same time mattepainting is a process that is somehow a "cheat". Since it replaces huge scenes, elements, interiors etc that otherwise should have been constructed or made.

does anyone have any idea when the #3 challenge for 2009 will be? I am new to the site and haven't done much matte painting, but would love to get in on such a challenge. Especially after seeing the works from previous challenges!
