ryvick: Thanks for your comment. Yeah I'm pretty much going for a dinosaur feel and kinda basing to a lot of different dinosaur reference. The wings are kinda blocked out still and don't know how I will be doing it yet. Roght now I'm kinda going for bat wings but we'll see.

I think I might give it a rest for today and finish off other work, but if there's time tonight I might give another 30 minutes or an hour.

Thanks for your comments aby arty. I'm kinda getting different dinosaur reference on my sculpt and the velociraptor is one of them.

Here is another one and this one roughly took 1 hour and 20 minutes. will try to get another hour done tomorrow after work.

Here's my new dragon.
Gave up on the eastern style dragon 'cos I was having trouble altering the base mesh to suit (removing wings etc) without ending up with nasty effects. Might get back to that one later if I have time.

Decided to aim a bit more realistically for my skill level and do a good ol' traditional dragon.

Only low division at this stage but will get into more detail soon.

Great entries so far!

3 Hours Work now... Spent a lot of time making the fingers... What a nightmare!!! now I've got to do the same with the legas and finally, some alphas. Is there any suggestion on how to make those wing stripes I've drawn on the picture? Thanks in advice!

P.S.: The pedestal is the fire, and I've downloaded that matcap from pixologic's page. Sorry for my english!

Freespace-3DT

Slashmore: In Mudbox, there is a Curve system, by which you can draw 2d curves, and then sculpt along those ( this means it's very easy to do stuff like straight lines ). There should be something similar in Zbrush. Nice creative use of the pedestal. :)

Thanks Freespace-3DT for your comment really much appreciated. Godzilla is awesome and although not a lot of people loved the recent film I really liked the creature design in that movie. I'm gonna try give him a bit more bulk on my next update but for now I was able to squeeze in roughly 45 minutes before starting work.

just out of curiosity, how do our mudbox users deal with mesh posing and such? i feel like im missing something silly here but its pretty simple to pose in Zbrush though it looks like it cant be done in Muddy.

Apollofox: Mudbox users at a small disadvantage here. You need to manually grab and move parts of the mesh to sort of pose it. Or at least, I haven't figured out another way.

Hi... finaly got some free time to do this... ( ~7.5h - too much time... :P )

I'm not that in to 'types' of dragons.. this just came out when i was 'doodling'.. :P.. but inspired from all the great sculpts here! (thanx for all the great stuff!)

didn't put much time in to sculpting the 'pedestal'... (it's supposed to be a hand.. less details to this so dragon the standsout... :P and i'm too lazy :D )

about 6h to sculpt the dragon.. 35min to do the 'pedestal'.. and 1 hour 'posing' + fixing...

hope u like it.. :)

XADA
29-05-2009, 12:25 PM

XADA, Slashmore - thanx for the comments... :)

XADA, if u mean it's less organic.. cos of the texture… hmm.. i guess this little guys is more of a jumper-glider rather than a total flying one... hunts small animals (pests!)

(the real reason: i found a simple alpha.. (2-3 mins work right there! :P ) and was too lazy to do more detailing.. cos modeling the head took some time.. and i wanted to do part of a castle for the pedestal.. to make the dragon look HUGE! but by the time the dragon was done i had only about 2 hours for that and posing.. so had to do a simpler pedestal..

from Huge to tiny... i then wanted the dragon to go around just one finger of a hand... but that way the pedestal would have been bigger than the dragon.. (and just modeling one finger raised up .... not a good idea ;) ) .. so i did a hand.. maybe a gloved hand.. ? )

This is the last update for this dragon. I probably won't submit it for final submission yet until close to the due date because if I can get enough time, I might try another dragon completely different from this design and decide which one will be my final entry. Otherwise If I don't get the time this will be final submission.

Didn't get enough time to work on the pedestal and used the remaining time to do a quick pose and last minute touches mainly on the wings and hand.

XADA: Thanks for your comment. It's going to be tough call. Mr Peculiar's horntail is a very strong entry. Also Darkmonk's is also very solid. Overall though good effort to everyone! Dragons Rule!!!!

Thinking of having a stab at this later in the week - are we allowed to extrude faces? I was thinking of making an adjustment for horns in Maya by pulling faces out. As long as I'm not tacking them on is that allowed?

dPunisher - that is a mighty fine sculpt. I really like the hand as a scaling device.

Freespace-3DT

wow . i have a first fan i think :D . i'm happy that somebody found my creatin interesting.
freespace-3DT - i wanted to mak it a little bit more like a real thing and found that chin dont have much of the detail. but maybee i should give it a bit of noise or texture of skin.
dpunisheer - good idea. i think i'll try to make some vegetable and to put it in the mouth of dragon. or to compose something interesting . i have 3 hours left.

paulius-st

well. i'm finished. here's some pics of what i've done. big thaqnks for dpusniher for the idea of a carrot and a dragon atempting to take of with it. a carrot at the begining was a pjedestal. i posed a dragon again to mach a hard atempt to carry a big weight :) . fixed his jaw. total 7 hours of modeling and 10 days of laughing :D . and ofcourse 2 minutes of scetching.

i figured i should ask this before I get too carried away.

Is it legal to break the object into separate subtools? I am still using the same mesh. And this was all done inside of zbrush no outside app needed. As you can see the wings and head are separate from the body. Let me know what you think.

Matx - one of my favourites!!!

Not looking like I'll get a sculpt done in time :(
Works been flat out and in my spare time I've been flat out laying over 5 tonnes of bricks in my backyard. If the next sculpt was a bricklaying one I reckon I'd kick arse now!!

Great work everyone!!!!!
