Creatures of Legend - Dragons

Welcome to THE Sixteenth Speed Sculpting Challenge. Whether you're new to sculpting, to the Threedy forums, or you're a seasoned veteran, come and join in on the Sculpting madness – there's plenty of fun and learning to be had by all!

http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww288/Freespace87/comp16poster.jpg

The Rules:
1. The competition will run until the 10th of June 2009, 12:00 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/)); the time between now and then will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries – at which point the next competition will start.

2. The moderators will be supplying a base mesh for each competition, from which everyone will start sculpting. This is so we all get an equal start and it keeps us on topic. You must work only with the base mesh provided and you must not add any additional base meshes or objects of your own. We simply want you to use your imagination and see what you can come up with what has been provided!

3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating – we are relying on your honesty here!

4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.

5. As the base meshes show, the sculpt this time starts from a head bust. Do not add any additional objects, SubTools or base meshes to what was given.

6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpt you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognisable and on topic.

7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it. It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc., but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "Manage Attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

8. You can create multiple sculpts, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.

9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Submissions thread, here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=67047)

These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!

We've attached the supplied base mesh at the bottom of this post. Take it and go subdivide!

The Brief:

Time limit: 8 hours

Start Date: 8th May 2009, 12:00 PM GMT+0

Deadline: 10th June 2009, 12:00 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/))

Subject: Creatures of Legend - Dragons

This challenge begins a series that will take place over time ( not necessarily one after the other ), featuring creatures of legend and myth. Depending on how well this goes, there's going to be more ( make sure to suggest your creature of legend in the suggestion thread (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=64703) ).

To kickstart a new wave of SSC challenges, we plunge into the depths of the domain of Dragons. These beasts are the largest, meanest and most feared entities of legends of days past.

Any type of dragon is accepted, from fire, ice, golden, green, red, black, and so on. Both viciously realistic as well as stylized dragons are accepted.

Deliver the strongest and most vicious dragon you can allow your mind to imagine. The time-frame for this one has been beefed up to a total of eight hours, to allow all the intricacies of a complex dragon to be dealt with. Best of luck, Dragonsculptors!

The Mesh:

This month's base mesh is a basic attempt at a generic dragon made by yours truly. It shouldn't hinder your creative flow in any way, and you should be able to make just about any sort of dragon out of it. Update: There is also a box attached, that you can optionally use for a pedestal for your dragon.

Your base mesh is attached to this post - simply click on the attachment at the end of this post, save the file, import it in the sculpting software of your choice, and you're on your way!

Please note that you mustn't add any more objects – use only what has been provided and nothing more! This is the challenge after all!

Here's your .obj file - download it, have fun & get to work! >>>

There was small mesh error at the mouth area, i fixed it and uploaded it.
http://rapidshare.com/files/230668529/ssc016_dragonbase.obj.html

Btw, can i start with moving some poligons in other program ? like cinema or max ? And then switch to mudbox/zbrush

Freespace-3DT
08-05-2009, 08:34 PM
NeXt One: Thanks you for spotting the error, it has escaped me. What was it? I've updated the original post with your fix. And no, I'm sorry but you shouldn't modify the base mesh in standard applications - it would remove the equal-start of everybody. Though this is easily achieved with move tools in Zbrush/Mudbox at the base subdivision level.

capitan_popo: Fire it up!

But what is the diference, moving some vertexes in mudboy in cinema is the same, the effetct is. will somebody know, if i move them in other program ? wtf

Pedro Toledo
09-05-2009, 04:21 AM
I agree with you. Moving verts around in any software should not be a big issue as long as you don't change the topology.

I love the theme, but I wonder if such a complex subject, and 8 hours time limit, can still be considered a speed sculpt...

I'll try to join anyways.

Freespace-3DT
09-05-2009, 09:23 AM
Sauron: I'm looking forward to your dragon.

mrpeculiar: I'm so sorry you HAVE to join us, hehe. ;P

NeXt One & Pedro Toledo: The rules have always been that people don't alter the base mesh in other software. If you feel it is an extreme hindrance ( I may not be the best base mesh builder - or it may not be quite as you would have made it ), I'll talk it over with my fellow mods, and see if we make it work for you to move stuff around in 3dsmax/maya/cinema, etc... How's that?

I felt that 8 hours would do a dragon justice, as 5-6 hours could be rushing it for some people. If it's too long, you can always finish up in 4-5 hours and call it done, anyway. :) I'm really excited to see what you guys do with the theme!

mrpeculiar
09-05-2009, 12:07 PM
8 hours is perfect for me ...........Guess i better get modeling then since i HAVE to participate :haha:

One question ..........are we allowed to add a base for presentation .......nothing flash ........just a simple pedastool ?

Freespace-3DT
09-05-2009, 12:18 PM
I guess it would really benefit the dragon to have base to stand upon. Good idea, mrpeculiar. I'll edit the brief post to reflect this right now.

And to show my appreciation heres my first 30 minutes to get the thread rolling :*poly:

darkmonk
10-05-2009, 07:55 AM
hi, are we allowed to sculpt the box into any shape we want ?
could i sculpt it into a large rock face and have my dragon gripping onto it ? or is the box just meant as a simple surface to ground your sculpt?

thanks

Freespace-3DT
10-05-2009, 09:29 AM
mrpeculiar: You're very welcome! If there's someone with a great idea that will add to the experience value of the challenge, I'm always welcome for input. :) And that dragon looks pretty good, I like the muscular structure you're defining. The pose makes it appear noble, lighthearted, like a white dragon.

darkmonk: Hey there! You most certainly can, that sounds really cool.

Now, as ClassicGamer requested the Hungarian Horntail from Harry Potter, what would be extra cool is if whoever does do it, also sculpt the pedestal into one of the towers of Hogwarts and have the dragon gripping on to it. Oh man that would certainly look awesome. :D

Freespace-3DT I have a quick question

Are we allowed to subd the hands and feet to allow us more polys?

Of course this would add polys to the original base mesh thats why I am asking if it is legal to do this.

Thanks in advance and I think I know what the answer will be but I just wanted it pointed out.

Oh and one more thing do we have to show a sub D level 1 poly count screenshot to prove we didn't add anymore polys? (in relation to the above question)

Freespace-3DT
10-05-2009, 10:33 AM
Scottleroc: You should be allright to subdivide things locally, as long as it all stays within Zbrush/Mudbox. Prodiving subd level 1 screenshot along with your work is not required, but some people do it and it's pretty neat to see the sculpt at different subdivisions.

mrpeculiar: Just take care not to make the scales too powerful, otherwise details like eyes/teeth could get lost from a distance. I love the mouth you did for the dragon.

But what is the diference, moving some vertexes in mudboy in cinema is the same, the effetct is. will somebody know, if i move them in other program ? wtf

If there is no difference in the effect, then it shouldn't be a problem for you to use your Mudbox or ZBrush to do the job. Of course, we won't know if you have used another software package to do this, but these challenges are all about coming together and tackling something under the same guidelines, using the same programmes and coming up with something great under the same rules and restrictions as everyone else. Every challenge has restrictions, that's just how it is.

Sorry to butt in Freespace! Over to you :)

mrpeculiar - great dragon! Really like the face! once ur done modeling... u could do a really cool pose... :)

I always used to draw dragons when I was a little tacker so I'm looking forward to having a play with this!

mrpeculiar - great start! maybe you could vary the scale sizes a little more? looking very fierce!!

KREFT - a very different approach but an excellent start

CHAO5 - can't wait to see the details emerge

mrpeculiar
12-05-2009, 05:01 AM
Ok .......think the horntail is looking ok for posting
Just over 2 hours and i think i can squeeze one more sub D out of the mesh
The prob for me has been the extra polys where the two front legs were ......they are up around the neck area and took me a while to squash back into the mesh ...............seems a waste of polys having those spots there but thats the nature of this challenge ........
Obviously i have to add all the spikes ect so its looking a little naked atm ;)

mrpeculiar
12-05-2009, 11:35 AM
well im having an absolute ball with the horntail
Im at the 4 hour mark now and thought yet anather update was in order.
8 hours seems like ill be cutting it fine but i think once ive reached my 8 with this ill submit it as my final and move my progress to the organic WIP part of the forum and continue with retopo, texturing and rendering ect .......just enjoying this one tooooo much.
Anyway ....heres the standard modeling pose and a quick free transform pose

mrpeculiar: I've got to say I'm amazed at what you've done here, with both dragons. Way to go, man! And that's pretty cool how you solved the fact that the horntail doesn't have front arms.

KREFT: Hello, and welcome to the challenge. I see you're starting to define the dominant forms for yor dragon, keep it up, and when you've got something, don't hesitate to show.

CHAO5: Hey, that's a happy dragon right there. What I'd say needs more attention is the muscles that attach the wings to his back.

SR_6274: Try defining his elbows ( all of them ) more, that'll give a sense of anatomy and utility to his limbs. The wing tips could be pinched and his mouth needs to be big enough to eat a man whole. :)

KREFT - Loving the progress! Really wise looking dragon.

mrperculiar - I'm thinking about getting rid of all the legs and doing an eastern style dragon. How'd you remove the front legs on your scuplt? I was thinking of masking the area at lowest division and then just reducing it back with flatten and other brushes. Is there an easier way? I don't want to end up with a mess of polygons that I can't apply any texture over. Any advice?

Might get kicking on this one tonight.

mrpeculiar
13-05-2009, 08:17 AM
ahoy gumby .......
unfortunatly the rules in the challenge state somthing along the lines of not being able to alter the mesh .......so in this instant you will have to squash those legs back with flatten/move/smooth as i have with my mesh.

It shouldnt work out as too much of a problems for texturing with this challenge as were not supposed to texture/render our sculpts other than basic screen grabs of what weve done.

What i plan to do with mine is retopoligize the sculpt after ive completed my model for the challenge and then do my uv unwrap ect for my own personal enjoyment......... hope that helps and good luck.

On a side note .........would have been nice to have a few toes on our base mesh.......managed to get some out of the stumps provided though ;)

And since im here ill show off my 6th hour ......still have to do the tail half ......wings and feet ......and a few adjustments here and there
Hope i have enough time to sculpt a little base

Here's about 1 and a half hours progress.
I've opted to try and make an eastern style legless dragon.
Thanks to mrperculiar on the hints on getting rid of the legs.
I still have some work on the remaining legs mesh to hide it totally.
Spent a great deal of my time so far just amputating them damn legs & wings!!

I may have some time this weekend to do an entry. Curious if the no-altering mesh thing applies to setting up groups? It makes for an easier sculpting experience but doesn't require actually changing any geometry. Is that allowed this go around?

Freespace-3DT
13-05-2009, 03:19 PM
Gumby: I'm glad you found that reference for the asian dragon, it's going to be much easier on you. :)

mrpeculiar: Congrats on a job well done! That's definetely the Horntail we were hoping for.

Dunric: The box is for a podium/pedestal/terrain/object for the dragon to interact with. But what were you thinking of doing with it?

califfguzman: That's looking sweet so far! I love how the tail goes around the rock and the dragon looks like it's protecting its territorry from tresspassers.

Teyon: Great to see you around the Sculpting Challenge! Please tell me more about setting up groups.

Teyon
13-05-2009, 03:33 PM
:) Nice to be back in here again! It's been awhile.

Well, for the group setup, you'd just select faces and assign them to a group name. Then, in ZBrush, since the object has been grouped, you can hide areas you're not working on by holding down the CTRL and SHIFT keys and then clicking on the object in the area you want to work on. Basically, it's just an easier way of hiding parts of the mesh. Most modeling apps have a way of doing this - ZBrush included (that's what polygroups are for in ZBrush).

So, the actual geometry doesn't change at all, poly counts and vertex order are the same, they just have been assigned to a particular group name the same way you'd assign them to a material.

Why do you choose to go to the highest subD and work down with the flatten brush? I am wondering why you didn't go from low to high rez? It seems faster to work with the masses down to the fine details. Is there a particular reason you work from hi-rez to low-rez? Thanks and amazing work!

Teyon

Oh hey! Added benefit that I didn't know about until just now - local subdivision inside ZBrush. So if you create polygroups in ZBrush (or group the object and bring it into ZBrush) you can hide the body parts based on what you want to work with, right? Well, you can also do local subdivision on the visible parts, allowing for increased detail only in parts that need it. I'd never used them that way before, I've only ever used them as a means to hide stuff. It's pretty cool and very handy in situations like this. Something to consider. I don't know how Mudbox handles groups or if it even recognizes groups but I thought I'd put it out there as a request...

Wow! amazing entrys. I have been inspired by mrpeculiar to enter. Dude your thing looks awesome!

Now, i have never done one of this, tho i have kept an eye on some challenges.

Is it like you spent 8 hours and if it looks badass, you enter it? Do you get second tries? Does the 8 hours have to be all in one sitting?

I will mostlikely enter and embrace this challenge. It looks pretty awesome!

Freespace-3DT
14-05-2009, 03:00 PM
Neto: You can show us work in progress images at any time, and you can try as many entries as you like, however you can only submit one entry in the Final Submission thread. Also please read the rules regarding submission in the Final Submission thread. Additionally, you don't have to spend all the 8 hours in one sitting, you can spread it out over several days/weeks. You don't even have to spend all the 8 hours if you can finish your sculpt in 5, for example.

Hi there.. I've always seen these challenges and wanted to join in, But never had the courage! :o
I don't have much experience with Zbrush and I've only learnt the basics, but hopefully participating in this challenge will help me learn!

I've always loved the dragons Feng Zhu has drawn in his concept art.. and have chosen one of his images to base my design around.

Here is as far as I have got in the first 1h 30m.

His head and neck need a bit better positioning..
Any and all crit VERY welcome.. I want to make it to the best of my ability!

I'm having trouble with the arms, tail and wings going really thin everytime I sculpt.. I'm using the inflate brush to stop it. but its annoying..

Well as it is I am kind of tired right now so I will come back to comment on everyone excellent work tomorrow.

I am actually done, at the limit, finish. No it isn't where I would like it to be but zbrush crashing around 8 or more times can hurt your time a bit.

Despite that I learned a bit more in zbrush and used tools that I haven't every really taken advantage of before. So over all it has been a positive experience.

XADA
16-05-2009, 11:21 AM
you know Darchand, i think your dragon might be very beautyfull with some little details. You should make the wings more fine, and work a little bit the transpose to leave the simetry. perhaps too, giving it a matcap clearer...
good job!

I wanted to enter but the provided .obj has some annoying symmetry problems. It looks like it only happens to me if such good sculpts as mrpeculiar`s can be made.
To be more specific, when I transpose the neck/head the symmetry gets badly messed up. I`m not exactly new to ZBrush so I know a bunch of workarounds, none works in this case though.

Thanks to those who tried to suggest solutions for the problem I was talking about.

Im truly thankfull for all the wonderfull comments people have given my dragon.
Thanks everyone .......im also considering doing some kind of movie ....possibly sculping the head (or most probly a new head) to maybe give some ideas on how i go about doing things.

Im currently opening a new thread in the organic WIP thread as im in the middle of reconstructing this beast with new topology so i can take it to the next level of detail, colour it, and do some sick renders, and finnaly if im not sick of it by then i may do a few animations as well.

Here is the X axis dragon i promised everyone since i was give n the ok to post it up. --------------> http://www.sendspace.com/file/e2e3rl

Im loving some of these sculpts ....keep it up guys

Thanks XADA, that helped a lot. I have one more stupid question though,

When I select it so I can just see the head I can't seem to get it so when I sculpt, it sculpts on both sides of the head. I tried X axis but that seems to go over to the tail. What I want to do is sculpt on one side of the head and have it do the exact same on the other side of the head.

Wow I hope that makes sense to someone.

maxxeh
18-05-2009, 04:18 PM
MDN thhe problem is that the default symmetry axis is X, and for this model we need it to be Z!

if you go to the transform tab you can change it.. I attached a pic to show you :)

Hi everyone,
This is my first ever attempt at using zbrush...and i have to say im quite happy with it. im not really working from reference so im prob gona run into issues later on. it took me a good 2 hours to do this as i really didnt know where the tools where and had to look at help and tutorials as i went.

not sure how i get an eye in here...is it best to just sculpt the shape or use a new sphere to work around like in max?

if u got time left u cud improve the snout , its looking like satin , a lil
harder edges may catch attention imo.
@bbbbarus: musculature is beyond awesome finish iti cant wait
@mr peculiar : thanks for the mesh. i wanted to get rid all 4 legs any tips ?
@ opentarget : man !! where shud i hide my face , u r amazing. ur in righ direction , just make the head arch down and make twisted horns on the head.

19-05-2009, 06:02 AM
aby arty, thanks for comments. I think you are right about snout details. Although, i'm very poor with polys on my computer...anyway, I think i'll stay on this version. Perhaps this matcap gives this satin like look...I would have use "all ossuary" matcap, but i thought i'd have to stay with "pure sculpt"....:ugh:
texture of the skin is only with alpha 58 with Zsub, and different scales of brush and Z intensity.

I have decided to stray away from the feng zhu concept, and have drawn up a dragon of my own. I will probably try to mix between the 2.

Would I be allowed to start the sculpt from scratch for this reason?
I feel I have lost my momentum!

kirgan, I love your design, he looks really sneaky! :D
CHAO5, The details on the scales really make it pop. nice work :)
Fellipe Lopes, I really like the pose and the style, almost T-Rex like.. but more badass :D

Freespace-3DT
21-05-2009, 01:27 AM
aby arty: I see what you meant. Sorry, for the sake of keeping everything balanced, please just have one dragon and one pedestal for your final submission. Dragon attire is a great idea, but you'll have to exercise your skill and sculpt it from within the dragon's base mesh. I'm sure you can do it!

kirgan: I'm loving that hunched evil looking dragon! It's stylized, but thre's a certain quality to it that also makes it work as realistic, too, though with a powerful personality. Can't wait to see it detailed.

maxxeh: You can start a new sculpt as many times as you like ( for example, our very own mrpeculiar has two dragons made already ), but you can only submit one entry in the Final Submissions thread.

Fellipe Lopes: I must say that was an awesome looking dragon. I thought for sure you were making a black dragon ( the horns! ), but now I see the reference, I see it in a whole new way. And your teacher is very wise for saying that. Reference is king.
