Sounds good, so what about requirements for the mesh, poly budget, textures, presentation, etc. Could you be more specific about those before we just go at it? :shout:

The aim here is not to make a character for games or cinema
Its about to make a full character with good quality, so u have the option to make it for games, cinema, or even for digital sculpting
But with good quality and be sure that most of the part are separated from each other, cuz u can go and retopo later on to convert it for games or wt ever
And that’s why we are going to make the uvs to be sure that the model will be ready for the next step which is texturing or rig or wtever
So again u have the all the freedom for the poly count as long as it’s free and apple to retopo later on if u like (aim is: to make a full character you can use for wt ever later on or even for ur demo reel-any tips about making modeling demo reel I will be here and I will share u guys wt I learnt from vfs and my small experience)

For the base mesh u could use any FREE base mesh as long as it has no details or levels on the top of it, which it could help to make you focus more abt the proportions and the sculpting

Also u guys have the right to use any s/w u like
Zbrush , mudbox or even modo
Cuz by the way we could share wt the best in each program and learn from each others abt the tools and the work flows

seems like everybody is off to a nice start ^^ curious to see what wolverine+orc will look like ^^.

I'll be putting mine on a chariot pulled by two boars. The pose will be them rushing down the battle field as he swings his main weapon on the chariot. his main weapon being an assembly of his victims skulls hold together by a chain and covered in spikes. doing some rough sketches before diving into my bed. i m not much of a drawer :p

images tomorrow

The_Caveman : nice . would u make the orc pulling it ?!

power3d : i love the u thing in a creative why for mixing 2 concepts in 1

Little update. about 3hours into modeling on this beast. There will be two of them pulling the chariot. Mix between Mammouth, Wild Boars etc and some references from the internet ;)

Not happy with the front yet but will fix that once in zbrush

I really like the chariot and the beast pulling it. The chariot is looking really sweet. I also like the wolverine/orc idea. Try adding something more to it, cause right now its just like someone pointed out just an orc with wolverines sideburns and claws.
Heres where I'm at the moment.
Got the base head done.

It's more of a lord of the rings style orc, this

Sweet update Kirgan :D

MStandar: The fastest way I think would be to play with it and try out different things :) stay at low subd levels first dont go to high to fast. I think there are some tutorials here on 3dtotal

here is an update on the boar :). and one with the chariot. almost figured out how to attach the two together. This is a render without displacement maps and stuff though :)

quick question. I was thinking Id split my base mesh into several subtools, such as the arm, head, legs and torso. How do i prevent them from separating when i divide the different parts?

quick question. I was thinking Id split my base mesh into several subtools, such as the arm, head, legs and torso. How do i prevent them from separating when i divide the different parts?

Well...select the parts you would like to sculpt it ( legs,arms...) make a polygroup ,polygon mode ->ppolygon propeties, than if you in max, assign a Multi/Sub-Object , for example you have 4 polygroup (arms, legs, torso, head) set the mat. 4 :), after it , export,
in ZBRUSH -> pref. ->importexport->Import Mat As Groups , just turn it on, than import ur modell, and whoalaa! :))))

it allow u to separate ur model into many part
if u notes : i have many colors on my wirefram
i can c each area as a separate part

here is an example :-

Sweet progress Siah!! looking forward to the next step looking very promissing!! His arms might look a tiny bit short? but that is probably the angle he is on?

I was a bit stuck today with my orc so started thinking about the environment I wanted to put them in so digged up my tree generator I wrote back at VFS and reworked it a bit and switched the needle system of grids for a needle system of fur. this is a first test render :)

Thanks The_Caveman, i think I'm in need of some good orc refs... I'm kinda making it up from the description on Wikipedia.
What area of the arms do you think are too short? I extended the biceps/triceps area a bit, do you think it might be that the hands are too large?... I kinda like the hands big looking :)
You're whole set up is looking awesome by the way. Send some pics of your Orc so we can try to help your flow if you want.

Hey The Caveman,
Thanks dude. Definitely keeping the big hands :)
I hope you don't mind, I did some draw-overs to try and figure out how to give crits on yours. I hope this isn't considered rude, i did it with the best intentions.
I found that the nose and mouth might need to be lifted up a bit and that the jawline could be more defined and masculine.
I'll post the draw-over if you're keen.

-Thanks heaps Neozerahan :) I'll keep working on him.

Cheers,
Siah.

@neozeheran: thats one cool looking guy. maybe add some chains? you could maybe twist them around the arms or instead of having twice the same for the legs have one with chains and the other one like it is maybe? just a suggestiong though :D

@Siah: I'd love to see your drawover. I dont fint that rude at all on the contrary glad you are giving me crits and suggestions. looking forward to seeing them :D

@The_Caveman:
Cool man. Happy you weren't offended. This is the sketch up i did.
I just selected both the nose and the mouth and dragged them up in all views. and added a line which gives a more square/solid jawline:

@neozerahan. I use XSI not sure what program you are using but it has a cool feature letting you duplicate objects along a curve. Pretty sure there is something like a deform by curve for Maya and 3ds max not sure though. let me know what program you are using and I'll try and digg up some info about it :)

here is a new update. trying to get the skinshader in place. a bit shiny all over but no real specmap yet :).

Your texture work is awesome The_Caveman.
How much longer is this thing on for? any word? or does the original date stand?

Tank[NL]
03-06-2009, 11:58 AM
hmm, orcs. lots of em. yarr, i been lurking this thread. caveman, i think your general direction with the texture is cool. more tolkien then warcraft, however your current texture is swamping all of your detail. its like he got burned really badly and recently.

it doesnt do the model justice. pretty much all i see is a brown-ish mess. i dont want to be harsh, but thats just how i see it. if you limit the scar-like texturing to a few areas, like near the right side of his face, that would look a lot better, imho.

gl to ya tho. and to the rest of your orc-fans ^^

I reread your post Siah and kinda agree with you. the deadline would have been the 11th of june but the thread really started moving about a week ago maybe make it last till the end of june so people that just joined and those who have problems and those who have work can take their time on finishing it?

here is an update from me :) got rid of the burning skin hehe and repainted the whole skintexture just keeping some details, here is what I got so far. still some more detailing coming up (oh and teeth are just place holders right now hehe)

Tank: Thanks for the tip man, i made his Jaw a bit wider but I'm wondering if it's the size of his body that is taking away from his head?

neozerahan: I'm trying man... seriously thinking that I'm not gonna complete it though. Well... the orc might be, but no clothes or weapons.

The Caveman: yeah, it would be awesome if we could push it till the end of the month. I'm having a heap of fun, but I'm not sure that i'll be able to pump it out in 5 days time... not complete anyway.
To be honest man I really liked the darker red look to the the sandy yellow. I agree with Tank about the swamping.... just personal preference I suppose.

Here's my latest update, with a few details. Still working on the head. Gotta move to texturing soon :( not enough time.

Liking the cuts Siah :D!! Looking more massive with the day
I would be okay to push it to the end of june. Not sure what everyone else thinks though?

I agree on the red color but it made a huge contrast between the boars and the orc himself and all the details were gone with the darker color :( going to try and put in some more colors though. In the meanwhile a little update. painted the spec map added in some more skin details etc :)

Hey Marv, I'd say we delay the deadline till the end of june. since nobody really said they ddint want it and most of us seem to be okay seems fair to me to delay it till the end of june.

If anybody isn't okay just let it know on the forum otherwise I'd say new deadline june 30th

@JLCG, I think it will be a pedestal for most of us :). think it will be better rather trying to squeeze in an environment as well ^^ could maybe be a project for the month of july though ;)

Lol Siah, yeah euhm I didnt really paint the body texture yet so just unwrapped it and applied the head texture hehe clean it up and made a simple texture for it now, needs a lot of tweaking and actual painting :).

The_Caveman : hey dude very nice update so far
Don't get in love with dirt skin... :)
,(expect the lips) I don't fell the spec. at all (I know that u didn't fin. Ur main color map) but I guess u could test the spec cuz it's very important as JESSY always telling us at the ANTLAB in vfs ha-ha

anyways, I'm not sure which way u use to paint ur maps, but if u going to the old fashion way by painting it in ps , I would say y don't u go and try to poly paint it in zbrush and also if u need help , let me know and I will do my best

Thanks Mohammed. I mixed both actually poly paint and normal photoshop paint. the issue I m having with polypaint is that you cant go back to your layers and adjust them later on :( so use it for small details etc but not too much.
You were right about the spec hehe. I kinda killed it when I increased the bump map lol this looks better I think

looks like a good start m.shaheen. The scratch just looks a bit to clean right now but guess you just started so I am curious to see the rest. Keep it going

The_Caveman : I agree with u dude, every one I guess facing this issue in zbrush

But form that start I guess u should paint the over all as long as the head attached to the body right?!! But u seems get happy and u want to test with ur cool amazing skin shader

And the sec. way to get away from this problem is: to use bodypaint3d , it's such an awesome package

But anyways...i guess u know all wt am sayin, so good luck buddy

Crispy4004
11-06-2009, 09:43 AM
I've found polypaint can give kinda pixolated results too. Maybe if I had enough ram to divide one more time it would make the difference, but for now I've just been creating a large canvas and using the good ol' projection master.

Caveman - Any plans to add some FG, hdri, and reflectivity if you haven't already? I'd really help add some variety to the highlights on your model, which will also help show off the bump. Also you should look into using a surface sampler to simulate a peach fuzz effect. Yeah, I know he doesn't have peach fuzz, but the effect really helps sell the waxiness of the skin. Don't know how to do it in XSI though.

The_Caveman
11-06-2009, 12:09 PM
Thanks guys for those tips :D.
Not sure my skinshader is that cool though hehe still hoping to someday reach the photoreel effect you manage to get Mohammed :).
I'll look for bodypaint ^^. Heard of it but never played with it. But yeah I'll be using polypaint again to get rid of that horrible seam around his neck

Thanks Crispy4004. Yep found that out too that some maps get pretty pixaleted when using polypaint or that the pickup process messes with th textures and where they should be on the map. Right now I am not using any HDRI or FG, there is a reflection map (Which happens to be an hdri and is in the environment slot of the render pass) but I'll try those two out.
Looks like that peach fuzz can be made in maya thanks to a sampler node and a ramp plugged into the ambient color of the skinshader (if I follow what Max Wahyudi says on his making off) so to have that in XSI I should be using an incidence node together with a gradient and plug it into the ambiant color. fiddling around with that one right now :) will keep you posted. Its true that I never looked into the peach fuzz effect hehe :$ my bad

thanks for the tips again. updates later today
Cheers
Jozef

The_Caveman
11-06-2009, 09:35 PM
as promised updates ^^
redid the skinshader and got a bit more of the peach fuzz I think workingin this one. still messing around with some setting but I hope looks more realistic and brings out the bump a bit better still some detailing needed but I like the rubber feel I got going on the lips

Thanks power3d :)

one more for today.

Wanted to see how it all looked together so far. it definitly needs euhm poses and lighting and texturing and some more modeling hehe.
Yep he has "Wings" now.
It is not his wings though. When I looked for Shamans and witch doctors etc in general they had some sort of animal on their heads. Wolf, lions etc but I didnt wanted to go for something on his head and wanted a bit more of a fantasy creature so ended up with the dragon and his wings. then found some awesome concept work which I am working on now and try and get integrated into the wings. so right now there is about 30 mins of work on the wings. they will be held together by chains and ropes attached to the shaman's back.
More to come

I'd say drop the competition? dont think we really need a winner or something just keep the thread going as long as there is updates till everybody is done and we can have an army of orcs? but that decision isn't up to me though ^^

Thanks Siah, I'm still around but decided to make my project a tiny bit bigger lol ^^ since I want to learn more about rigging, and more about maya and creature stuff (rigging, muscle sim etc) I launched myself in picking back up Maya which is taking longer then expected ^^ but I m still here hehe :D. I ll put an update this evening with some environment stuff I have been working on :)

Cheers

Update :)

this is after picking back up Maya after having not touched it for a long while ^^. still pretty damn rusty and using XSI shortcuts all over the place but this is what I got.
Part of the great rockwall this will be embedded into (sorry not really organic anymore)

looking good caveman. you might want to break up the symmetry on the pig. maybe a broken tusk or something. liking the scene so far. very LOTR-ish.

I dunno what everyone else is doing, but unless someone is planning on closing this thread down I'm gonna continue work on mine next week. Hopefully we can run with Caveman's idea and just keep going till we're finished. I would kinda like to have something for my portfolio so I really wanna finish. What does everyone else say?

The_Caveman

Agree with you Siah. I'd say we drop the competition idea since everybody is very busy and some have abandoned I have the idea lol so maybe just keep the thread going and make it some sort of resource thread or something :)

So I'm done rigging the boars. A rather simple maya quadruped rig. Pretty boring to show I guess :D. but allowed me to rework my rigging and pick back up maya.

Once done with the rig I realised that well I didnt like the boars that much anymore. something was bugging me. First thought it was the lack in detail of the texture, so restarted the texture till I realised I didnt really like the sculpt. the boar looked dull, no feeling nothing so restarted the sculpt today well this afternoon and this is what I got after about 1h30 of work.

Still figuring out some details for the nose. Any ideas more then welcome :D

Made a list of models I would like to complete for this project which is kinda turning into my new demo reel ^^. So I'll keep on posting stuff in here for a while I guess and look forward to everybody else's models and ideas

cheers
Jozef

Quiet in here ^^ where is everybody?

After the hyper ribbed boar I toned it all down a bit and added some more details.
The second image is the boar back in maya with just a simple skinshader applied. no textures yet.

Thanks Mohamed!! pity you aint posting updates on ur orc ;)

to put some more "how I did it" in this thread I thought I thought I'd post a screengrab of the skin texture. Its the composite of the three layers for the skinshader to get something close to the final result.
Put each section of the shader in a folder in photoshop and put the blend mode to screen (using the screencomposite) otherwise put it to multiply. Found this out recently only when reading more on how the skinshader works. thought it might be usefull for others when painting the skinshader.

enough talks here is the texture

Sorry guys for being silent last couple of days. quite some things changing during the next two weeks.

Siah awesome updates man!! can't wait for the detailed axe :D. as for the flogging away u should see the list I got pinned to the wall :p.

Thanks Mohammed, Nope no polypaint used and not 100% sure all seams are gone. I'm planning on doing a turn table one of these days and will double check then ^^. but most seams (except for the neck one) are underneath his belly and fixed them there as best as I could :)
