Am I first? Woohoo!
This thread will probably be a bit quiet for the first week or so (I'm finishing another project) but I just wanted to get setup.

oooh - cool choice. Which version of Shredder will you be flipping? The comic version? The old cartoon? The new cartoon? The Imagi TMNT version in TMNT: Smash Up? There's a lot to do with Shredder - can't wait to see this one, Buzzy!

This one should be awesome wish I had of thought of it. Always loved TMNT as a kid I can just picture a bad ass female version of The Shredder.

Ok, so I've got my work cut out for me for the next month and a half. I'm going to do the Comicon Challenge as well as this one. But, since Threedy is my home turf, this competition takes precedence. And besides, this is a much cooler and creative theme.
I'll get some mock-ups or concepts done in the next few days. I'm planning on doing a stylized/almost cartoony character. Possibly forgoing normal maps and such. I've been doing alot of cartoon-based models lately at work, so I think I might take what I've been learning there and apply it here. Also adds variety to my portfolio.
VinsanityV20 - My plan is to work from the classic Shredder from the original TV series for now. I will likely draw from other versions for certain details and stuff.

that damn Comicon, they got me too. As I said to Joseph P, you gotta be hard-core to do both. Maybe even quad-core.

Buzzy is quad-core. Do it to it.

Here's a idea sheet I put together.
The girl in the bottom right is the sort of style I want to hit. Stylized and a bit cartoony, but not anime.
I'm debating between a short and sexy kimono or hot pants. She's going to be a samurai girl, possibly with some geisha influence if I decide on the kimono. Thoughts?

shredder is his armor, I'd personally like to see you focus on making a unique yet recognizable feminine twist on that armor.
Buzzy

Well of course she's going to have the armor pads. But she needs to wear something underneath (or not, if Toe had his way)
But I don't want her to have the bulky chest plate and chain mail that he wears. I wanted the clothes under the armor to be a bit more....scanty. I want to show some skin. The male Shredder is covered head-to-toe with armor and clothes.

chain mail is see-threw. I approve this message.

I completely support your move to change up the costume, I think so long as you keep it recognizable, probably just need a similar helmet and claws for that, rock the purple/silver and maybe get the Foot emblem in there somewhere, you'll be fine.
I'm liking the short kimono idea, maybe loose/open a little in the front, with the wrap type bra underneath [next to top right].

Not a terribly exciting update, but here's the first pass base mesh. I'm thinking that I'm going to push the proportions a bit more.
Hey are you sure that is the same mesh that you've used in all your other comp entries? I looks IDENTICAL ('cept different.) ;)
Nice start, Buzzy. Forgive my cheek.

Yeah definitely work the proportions a bit more. Give her some hips, lengthen her legs, and soften her face...or perhaps make the nose, mouth, and jaw smaller.

once you go quadcore, you can never go back. Everything else is just boring.

Gotta agree with Darbruce. It's cool if she wears a kimono, but it best be covered in Shredder armor. I say go with a short kimono - like the chick in Red Ninja: End of Honor. It's a nice blend between what you wanna do, something that's practical in combat, and something that's sexy without being slutty. Check it:

But, yea - she's still going to need a helmet, breast plate, shoulder pads, etc. If she's to read as a female Shredder.
Btw: whose that chick in the middle. The gray statue looking anime chick - that's a cool design, but I've never seen her before.

That would be Yoko from Gurren Lagann (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAAOQHhoyzA). Insane show.

Yeah, I'm rather inexperienced at modelling females, so forgive my clumsiness.
I always look at reference whenever I model characters. And personally, I've modeled more females than males. I figure they're curvier, so they're harder to do, therefore it must be better for me as an artist (makes sense right?). My point is this:
http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/906156/tomb-raider-anniversary/images/lara-croft-tomb-raider-anniversary--20070514043032628.html?page=mediaFull
Crystal Dynamic's Lara Croft model? Some of the best reference I've yet found. Plus, someone else in this contest clued me into the personal website of the artist who modeled Lara Croft AND Amanda Egret for TR: Underworld:
http://www.pig-brain.com/gallery.htm
Also, this interesting pic:
http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/namco-scales-down-ivys-polygons-not-her-size-for-broken-dest/
Where they show the wireframes for Ivy from Soul Calibur IV and compare it to the wireframe for Soul Calibur Broken Destiny.
All of these are GREAT reference because they show off the wireframe, and therefore, should help clue you in towards the kinda poly flow you gots to shoot for. At the end of the day though, make sure she looks womanly in your 2D stuff, and it should translate to the 3D.
Hope you find the pics helpful! And mel_danes: thanks for answering my question - I haven't seen that much of Gurren Lagann, but apparently I'm going to have to! I wonder if they still give it on SyFy, or if they're just giving (yuck) more Rave Master...
