Well the mustachioed plumber is about to get a major estrogen injection.
Damnit I was gonna secretly do Mario.

I think this is going to be one of my favorites. It's gonna be hard to pull off a mario without the trademark mustache. Good luck!

all opinions welcome...

pokemon for sure. I mean, sexy wins. And you'll have more poly's left over to do extra stuff with on the smaller character. You could actually do a gumba or however you spell that. + who doesn't want a hot chick plumber?

Sadly I have to back up Goast here, I don't think the world is ready for a Squidbillys Mario. I am the world is not.
The Pokemon style coming from the minds of Nintendo, as it were, is a good choice for the character direction. That there is tons of ref's of females from said IP is also good.
Good luck with this.
oh yes, another cheap pokemon knock off to deal with!
Give her a yellow lightning charged gumba named gumbachu and you descent to the darkside will be complete.

Go with the pokemon mario :)

Thanks for the quick responses.
Well that's 3 votes for Pokemon Mario and 1 vote of disgust for all things Pokemon from dhin :P
So cute and spunky it is.
If I've got enough polys and texture space I think I'll try and make three outfits for her. The standard red/blue outfit, the fire throwing outfit, and for all those furry fans the raccoon outfit.

mustache!
The squid billy version would have been awesome but the po-kay man version looks good too.

more cleavage plox
ianchaos

As Tetsuya recommended I gave her more cleavage. ;)
Perhaps I can give her a fake mustache as part of the fire throwing outfit.
Alright here is the base body form WIP...wires shot...and a quick and dirty color eyes a bit past normal.

Looking great so far, but you're losing that "pokemon" look. Her eyes are too human I think. Her arms could use a little more care as well I think. You have all the polygons on the top and bottom, and only 1 for the front and 1 for the back. Try to play with those a bit to round that out. Her arms are also kind of thick for a pokemon character as well...I think. I never watched the show...but I remember string beans for some reason.

Yeah, looking pretty good so far.
I think the calves could use a little tweak. They seem like they should be shifted in a little.
I don't think what you have now is wrong, just looks a little unnatural, to me anyway, that could just be a matter of personal taste tho.

Maybe its a bit late, but I think you should do Tanooki Mario instead. :)
Its looking pretty good so far, but I think the proportions are still too 'realistic.'
Mario is a short, stumpy style of cartoon...not a tall, think manga guy. I think something like Harvest Moon would be a better point of reference.
Keep at it, its coming along well.

Yeah, goast and warlock are on to something, the proportions seem a bit off. If you're still going for the pokemon look that is. the torso needs to be thinned out and the hands and feet need to be thicker (the basic cartoon treatment). If you are going for a more adult look it'd be wise to go grab some refs of the more adult characters in cartoons. You cant just take a model of a girl and add bigger boobs and call it a woman... it just looks kinda odd.
If you are going for a more realistic adult woman just wearing the outfit from the concept image then i think you're heading in the right direction but in that case a whole lot is going to hinge on a great texture and pose. good luck.

Thanks everyone for the helpful comments...I think you were all dead on in your assessments. I followed Buzzy'z suggestion and used figures from Harvest Moon as scale references. I also gave her Mario's large gloved hands instead of the fingerless gloves.
Here's the new wires and quick render. Please keep the suggestions coming :)

Nice update. Much cuter. Could still use some work, the fingers look kinda thick at the tips. They should be thick all the way through. And i'd recomend thickening up the thin areas at the wrist elbows and ankles a bit more.

How come the concept is stylized like a Pokemon trainer but the model is fairly realistic? I mean, besides the Chibi proportions - her face, mostly.
Overall though, THANK YOU for not making a fat chick:D If ever given the choice, NEVER go with the Squidbillies option. Also, yours is way easier on the eye than the other WoW Dwarf-looking female Mario in the contest:D I mean, that one's a good model, but it's so, so wrong....

Hi Vinsanity
Buzzy suggested that I model my Marioette after a Harvest Moon character rather than a Pokemon character to better match the size of Mario, so I took her in that direction instead. Harvest Moon characters are quite Chibi proportioned, so that's how I ended up here. It's Buzzy's fault...all his fault.
thanks for the continued comments H2olt. I'll thicken up her joints a bit...but not too much or Vinsanity will come after me for making her put on too much weight. :)

Small Update...currently at 3766 tris.
Gave here bigger knees, elbows and thicker fingers. Made small adjustments to boots and face, and I know some of you are turned off by bald chicks so now she's got hair. :)
So if no one sees any major changes that need to be made, then I'm off to make her 3 outfits.

Hair looks really good. Only crit I've got is that the shoulders could use a little more sloped they're awfully "rigid" looking at the moment. Female shoulders are generally pretty sloped. Looks good otherwise, get on those costumes.

Yeah looking real good. I agree that the hair rocks. The new proportions are perfect.
My only gripe right now is that the soles of the boots look really thick.
I would rather see some 3/4 angles....I have a personal hatred for orthographics :)
Get to it!

ok, so here is what I'm seeing. The arms are long. This could be fine is that is what you wanted, and would be the eaist fix, but if that wasn't done on purpose then, you can either make the legs longer, or the arms shorter. As for the sole of the boot, maybe if you gave the front portion a smoother flow from boot to sole it would look better.

Okay IanChaos, you've officially won me over:) She's looking really cute, so if that's Harvest Moon's fault, than Harvest Moon is fine by me. My only crit is something that has been said before; her shoulders are a little too broad for her body type. Fortunately you can't tell unless you're looking straight at her - from an angle or side, it's not noticeable.
Keep going man! She's turning out great!

Model Updates.
As per BiG ToE's suggestion I shortened her arms and smoothed out the the front of her boot where it meets the sole.
narrowed her shoulders a bit as Vinsanity and others suggested, and gave her sleeves and minor hair adjustments.
Outfit Updates. Here are the three outfits. Standard - Raccoon - Fire. I'm at around 7500 tris at this point so room for improvement or perhaps another outfit.

OMG! Mario 3 sooo many good memories of those days long ago :)
ianchaos

yeah Mario 3 was my favorite....haven't played the newest one yet but it looks pretty good. Mario Sunshine was horrible.
Now as far as the outfits go. Mario always had a much bolder look with his red bibs and white accents so I thought I'd take her fire outfit up a notch...I also hope the icons as belt buckles aren't too over the top...girls like to accessorize.

This is looking H-O-T Hot!
I really like the different buckles.
When you say "7500 tris", is that for all 3 models? Or each one?
ianchaos
04-08-2009, 09:21 PM
thanks Buzzy :D
Here's a breakdown of the outfits
Base Model with starting outfit pieces: 4608 tris
Raccoon Bits : 374 tris
Fire Outfit : 2108 tris
Total : 7090 tris
I had a duplicate set of gloves that I removed which brought the count down from 7500+.
