Started Modeling. Work in progress. I am thinking of buttoning up the pants possibly and adding a utility belt. I will make the pants looser and look more like cargo pants. Right now the way I got em they look more like jeans. That will be fixed soon enough. Ill probably also tweak the hair more so it hangs more down, we will see. I will probably get rid of the tie loops on the bikini bottom too, too distracting. Anyways, I hope you guys like so far.

My God you move fast, Agent-X:O

Great choice man, and great concept/modeling so far. Just make sure you grab reference pics of Guile too man, so you can hone in on all the little touches he has. Stuff like those dog tags he wears, and the USA flag tattoo that's on his bicep - stuff like that. Without, say, the hair style to identify her immediately as female Guile, you're gonna have to nail other Guile-esque things about that character.

Still, you're moving so fast, I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to knock it out of the park!

Agent-X

:) Yes, I will add the US flag Tattoo, dog tags, and a utility belt. Right now I got all that as work in progress, I will share a shot of that come tomorrow.

Great progress so far Agent X. Still plugging away at Unreal 3 Skaarj, as well as this little beauty?
For great ref's look no further than the Zbrush masterpiece....Guile (http://www.gameartisans.org/gamecon/galleries/artwork.php?uid=273&aw=2597).
I think another way to really sell the character is to get her posed in the beginning of one of his signature moves, and move her through it in the beauty shots. Also a good background like from the levels he played on.
Altogether wonderful start.

Agent-X
19-07-2009, 11:05 AM
Hehe, yup, I already got that reference, but I could use some help with like what patches and those award rank things he wears and stuff, so i can put that on shirt. I am not big on military stuff, so i don't know like what needs to be on the shirt exactly to be dead accurate. If you guys at 3d total could help me with that, that would be great. And yes for final poses you guys are going to see some Sonic Boom and Summersault kick action and hopeffuly some comb action for victory as well. And to top it off, you guys will get the Guile stage from 1991 Street Fighter 2. :) I currently got several accessories that I just did, I will share them with you guys later. I made some hand cuffs as well that I will have in the back of the Utility belt. Ill show you guys soon.

And yeah both me and EvilEngine have been working on some Skaarj. I will get back into that again as well. :)

Here is the best freaking Guile I have ever seen.

I can use this for the tatoo on the arm

I was thinkingking I could use this for one of the patches on the shirt.

Maybe I can use this too.

It seems like for your design to represent guile It would help if you went with more of a female bodybuilder body type. It may not fit your idea of hot/sexy, but it seems more fitting with the source. Or you could at least go with a design as tough as chunli and cammy, so that the character looks like it could take part in street fighter.

Agent-X
19-07-2009, 10:59 PM
Cool deal, I think I might take your advice and put in some more muscle, but no where near as large as what Guile is. But yeah, definitely more defined. If the 9k polygons cuts me short of accessories to get rid of, Ill probably get rid of the shirt, so I can keep the sex appeal with the camoflauge bikini top, either that or I might just do a tank top instead. We shall see, I know it's still early in the game and I got plenty of time.

Rv_el did a great job making that model, you can see more of it here. (http://www.gameartisans.org/gamecon/galleries/artwork.php?uid=273&aw=2597)

as for your model, I would lean more towards Cammy as well. She has the muscle build you need. You may even want to go a bit larger in muscle to really push the fact that she reps Guile.

as for her clothing, you gotta do the tiny tank top, with nothing under it. You got to.

I have a friend in the Army that said the patch with the 2 swords is the "10th Mountain Division" patch. It's an Army patch, so you might not want to use it for your Air Force character... if you're going for "authenticity"... ;)

Looking good agent. The only thing that really bugs me is the pants not being buttoned. Sure it is sexy as hell but she is already pulling off the sexy just seems a little odd. I can just imagine how good this will look after you get in the belt and some of the accessories. Also I agree the latest female reference photo you picked would probably go better with the style of the character. Over all looks real slick.

Looking pretty good. I agree with them on the triceps issue, and I think its compounded by a bit of a bicep issue as well. I think the bicep should be a little wider where it goes under shoulder [the skinny bicep is making the triceps look like its hanging down much further than it is], and the triceps should be a little smoother/longer of a curve.

I think the calf could use a little more thickness as well, maybe not as thick as Chun-Li's but a hair more in that direction.

Those minor issues aside, I think your model is looking pretty solid so far. Keep it up.

the tights look to big and rectangualr. slim them down a bit or make the muscles displace the pants.. but i would slim her down a bit - she´s no soccer player.

and whats the "pelt" on her abs? they are disctracting to me ;)

other then that, great model and very sexy - awesome knockers...
and yeah - guile was always my favourite character too :D

Agent-X

Body builders are big. I will deffinitely add more wrinkles and looseness to the pants. Handcuffs and underwear? Or are you talking about the graininess in that area? If it is the graininess, it is from the area lights with hi number of samples in the shadows I am using along with final gather and global illumination. I hope that helps.

Psycho Mantis
24-07-2009, 09:19 AM
yes, the grain ;) looked like a pube-carpet - and that was kinda freaky ;)

Agent-X
24-07-2009, 09:46 AM
LMAO a pube carpet hunh? Hehe, thats so funny. In the end i will switch to a Directional light and an ambient light. I plan on doing an Out door scene. Ok I am going to post a couple more images of my character from different angles. And some more reference for my anatomy. Ok I figure with these angles you guys can really give me feed back and look at the reference photo and better give me advice.

If I may make a suggestion: I think THE defining aspect to guile is his hair. Really, he's just another beefy marine otherwise, (yes I realize he's supposed to be "air force") but that near mohawk he sports practically defines him.

so.. suggestion on general hair and look/mood:
http://vailias.com/Misc/JaneGuileHair.jpg

(pardon the quick job on the hair)

H2olt
25-07-2009, 05:40 PM
Agreed, I wouldn't try anything quite that crazy since it seems like you're going for a more realistic/natural look. But sans animations, guile is pretty much defined by his hair.

You should at least try out some things in this direction.

Thanks Psycho Mantis.

For everyone out there, I can use a hand with creating a shadow pass for my objects that have transparency maps, such as my chain link fence. I am rendering with Mental ray and using final gathering and global illumination. I am hoping someone out there is a maya user like and can help me by creating a short tutorial step by step how I might go about getting my chain link fence to cast shadows with a shadow render pass and if I need any other render passes to make this work. I know I can get the shadows if i don't use global illumination, but I do want global illumination. So I am hoping with a shadow pass I can comp the two together in photoshop to get what I want. If anyone could help me with that, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Sincerely,
John Inman

I just have three letters O M G! That is some sweet work you got there.

SnappedStrings
30-07-2009, 06:53 AM
AgentX, I don't know how you can get the fence to cast shadows properly, however I know of a workaround.
Set the Chainlink fence to not cast shadows (this will get rid of the big black patch on the tarmac) and then create a texture to mimic what the fences shadow would look like in Photoshop and texture it on the ground. Now, obviously, this is useless if you need the shadows to be dynamic, but if you don't, then it should work just fine.

Agent-X
30-07-2009, 07:04 AM
Thanks guys, I am going to try some other alternatives with the casting shadow of those transparency mapped objects. I am destined to figure it out. I know theres got to be ways. I just dont know of all of them yet. Ill try some rendering tricks and see what I can get. But yeah if anyone knows, please, please tell me. As I do want to push this to the limits that Maya can offer.

Agent-X
30-07-2009, 07:17 AM
Ok, I can get shadow passes, but not with global illumination, so I am going to render these objects of mine that have transparency maps on them with out casting shadows with global illumination and final gather turned on then set them to not visible in the render stats but to cast shadows and turn off that damn global illumination so I can get my damn shadows I want, hehe. I am feeling develish right now. Its almost too easy.

Agent-X
30-07-2009, 08:07 AM
I figured it out Shadow Raw Pass it is, then invert it in photoshop and then set the sucker to mulitiply. OK, its on like Donkey Kong. I was working on that in my free time for about 5 days off and on. Now that I got that down, now to my character. I am looking foward to doing some SSS.

Agent-X
30-07-2009, 08:57 AM
Yeah, I am just going to keep my life easy and turn off the global illumination and the caustics I had on and just keep the final gathering on. This way I get what I want and less crap for me to worry about. Heres how it looks with final gathering alone which I think it came out quite nice.

As that is yes, first and formost. The other character and all the other goodies I made, that is just icing on the cake. I got plenty of time still, so I am in no rush to finish em right away, I am going to take my time and do the job right. I have a life and personal problems to attend just like anyone else. Got to find ways to survive. 3d just happens to be the best skill I have at making money, so Ill make the most of what I got and know. As any family man working in this industry, its tough and hard. you cud really trim this model and give it some cleaner geom looks a little messy and theres alot of wasted polys. hope to see an update soon :)

just did a quick paintover, u got to realise that when u make a low poly game character when your distributing the polys theres 2 things u must bear in mind, is it helping the silouete or is it helping the deformation of the mesh? now things like the belly button should be left to the normal map to show of. i did this to show u how many polygons u can save and how much cleaner your mesh cud be. hope this helps :)

I did it the way I did, because skin has sub surface scattering and cloth doesn't. Unless I can tell the subsurface scattering shader to not scatter by possibly painting out a mask some how, but I have never done that or know if that will work. If it will work, then yes I can save some polies. If someone knows about that then please tell me. I don't plan on using a blinn in a layered shader for my entire model, just for the hair, clothing items and accessories. A blinn will not cut the realism for me in the skin, so I must use the miss fast skin shader. So yes, if there is a way to mask out the subsurface scattering so it will not scatter, please show me how and then I will cut the polys down more. If not then I am not going to do so. So here is an image of the shader I am going to use for the skin, I am just going to dial in the settings I need once I have the model uv mapped and textured.

Hmmm, I think I found the answer, I apply a black and white texture into the scatter weight. So the clothes will be masked out black, and the skin area in the texture will be white. Hmmm. Yeah, I believe this is correct. Please do correct me or if you have a pointer for me using this shader regarding this issue and my character please tell me. Thanks.

I don't think he means cutting down your mesh to save pollies, I think he mainly means to cut down, to clean up the mesh. As it is now, the mesh flow is messy. Cleaning up the flow would be a good idea, before you unwrap.

Yes, I agree with that. And that I will, I am just trying to figure out more on this SSS, since I am still trying to master that shader. Lots of nodes in that bad boy. Hehe.

Hi X,

if you haven't already - try getting the Gnomonology's sss video by the great Alex Alvarez - it's for Maya but i got it anyway and it is veery informative, he almost went through the whole parameters and explain the effects given

Agent-X

Yup, got it, Alex Alvarez is great. Lots of good stuff by him. I also have Jason Walsh's tutorial on SSS, I have been researching it pretty good, its just in none of the tutorials I saw did they show where something doesn't get effected by scattering by using a texture map, so I didn't know which node to plug in that black and white texture, but yeah the scatter weight which is the one I think it is makes sense, no scatter weight should mean no scattering. I tried a test with a checker map and it appeared where it was white in the checker pattern it was having scattering there, but not where it was black.

hmm not sure how to get the effect you wanted by means of nodes since im using max and i think its much simpler implementation compared to maya and xsi's mental ray..

sorry wish i can be more of help

well basically where I have the tank top or any other clothes and accessories, I dont want that to scatter, So I could make a black and white texture map to tell it where to have scattering and where not to. So the only areas I would want SSS to show would be on the skin and the eyes. I might have to make a seperate sss shader for the eyes because of the size of the eyes is much smaller than the body. So the scatter radius is a much smaller value in the eyes. Ill probably watch those videos again to go over things. It wouldn't hurt. Lots of good info.

Agent-X, just make the clothing seperate objects.

gegrazion
23-08-2009, 03:50 PM
BiG ToE-3DT: why would he make the clothes seperate that would just result in loads of wasted polys?

BiG ToE-3DT
23-08-2009, 03:52 PM
nope, the count would be the same.

gegrazion
23-08-2009, 04:18 PM
hmmmm wel im not sure how dat would work only thing i cud think was get his mesh and cut it into sectinos, pants, shirt etc but then there would be loads of problems becos wen the cam pans round you might see the sections where they dont join as one mesh.

BiG ToE-3DT
23-08-2009, 04:36 PM
what you would need to do is have them overlap slightly. Then, even though the different parts of the mesh are seperate, it will still look as if it's a whole.

Here is my work in progress on the texture. I am still working on the textures, I am far from done, but its slowly coming along. I have been dealing with a lot of things in my personal life, so I am sorry for not showing sooner. Anyways, here is where I am at, I hope you guys like so far.

she is HOTTT

agree that the tatoo looks saturated

usually blue inks -unless freshly tattooed - will change to a somewhat dark blue color and red color will fade to a more dark orange - this will give a more realistic feel to it

other than that, she is looking awesome

Thanks guys. Yeah, I just took the US flag and scaled it down to fit on her shoulders, I didnt think about changing the blue or red. I guess I can redo that. Yeah, Today is going to be a crazy texturing day for me, lots to do still. So Ill post again later tonight.

Great progress John!
The face and the eyes are killer. Sweatshirt looks really nice too. Good detail with the blackness from the sweat there ;). Gave it a realistic feeling.
The overall texturing looks good so far.

A couple of pointers though...
The stomach looks a bit to flat. And the "hipline" (where the bone ends) looks a bit "messy" (I think it's the diffuse that does that).
The triceps are actually hanging to much.
And lastly the pants ain't fitting realistically. Look at any real photo or person..
They are pushed to much outwards at the thighs. And they are to narrow below the knee.
You should also try making some sharp wrinkles at the cloth, to give that real feeling. This could be done with some normalmapping ;). Some tweaks to the material are needed too.
I also agree about the tattoos' color ;).

Just my two cents ;)

Rock on,
Hula

Looks better now in color. The tats need to be worked on more tho. Maybe make her look dirty a little and put little splats of blood on her gloves and feet from all the beat down she does to victims who mess with her.

lol.
That blood thing would just make it gruesome. Would take away the sex-appeal a bit...

Most likely she would only have a flag tatoo on one shoulder. if there was one on the other shoulder I'm guessing it would be something else like an airforce symbol of some sort

Small little update. I am working on the pants right now, I will then get back to the US Flag tattoos. In Street Fighter 4 Guile has the tattoo on both arms. So I am just going to leave it the way I have it and just darken the colors and try to make it look more real. Here is currently where I am at right now.

Great improvement. Now they look much more real.
The belt still needs a little work;).

The thing about the thigh thickness is still there, but it might be so that you can't change it now because of the UV mapping.?
