Well I want to do Samus Aran or Samuel Aran in this case. I want to bulk the suit up to more masculine proportions and do some slight modifications. I have tracked down some good reference photos and will probably do some sketching as of Monday. I have company coming over for the weekend or I would try to get some work out sooner.
Here is the collection of reference images I have so far.

Nice! I like these reference pics you got. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

bulky space armour is always a tough sell for a female character, so I am going to be more than interested in seeing how you tackle this :D good luck, I look forward to seeing your work

L3XICON: lol you remember that I am turning her into a him? In other words no biggy for bulking up. If the foot was on the other shoe and I was taking a big guy I would bulk down to make it more feminine.
Agent-X: thanks Agent I am hoping I will be able to do Metroid Prime some justice.

bah, lol ignore me, will teach me for not reading the title of the thread (in defence I had many open :P) I thought you were making female version of the GoW guy (marcus fenix?) so my apologies, and well hell. I equally interested in seeing yah bulk up the armour :D

curious to see how this comes out as that samus' armor itself isnt exactly gender specific =P
side note: I was thinking you would apply male characteristics to samus' armor (broad shoulders, muscular frame o.O, less curves)

I hope you keep the athletic look to the character because I really hate the bulky, slow look of the Gears of War characters.
Keep it up.

I agree with d_m, keep it athletic, I'm thinking someone with a build close to Michael Phelps or Jerry Rice?

feh - I wouldn't count on Micheal Phelps to fight aliens in space, Darbruce. I think Darchand's reference and initial ideas are more spot on - the Gears of War style bulk. I mean, ever since Retro took over Metroid, that suit has been sleek and feminine looking (except for argurably the suit from Corruption) ; it's about time someone bulked it up again! That being said, it's gonna be hard to tell gender based purely on armor - I assume that when all is said and done, they'll be holding their helmet, or something? At least have the visor shattered so we can see the dudes face!
Also, just a thought. If his name is Samuel, than you should make him look like Samuel L. Jackson in there:) I just automatically think of Mace Windu when I hear the name Samuel.

Thanks for the support. I am still looking for ideas of what male face I should look for. I will defiantly try out Samuel L. Jackson (thinking of which some one should do a female version of shaft). Some of the people I am looking at for a strong masculine face include Dwayne Johnson, Forrest Griffin, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and now Samuel Jackson.
I will of course do both the helmet and the head and probably a pose with him holding the helmet. I am hoping I will get some sketches up Monday for now I am a little distracted by other things.
Thanks again guys the feed back is great.

alright I have worked little on what I would like the face to look like. I will admit I am not a stellar concept artist but that isn't my main focus. Of course this face will be tweaked as I go but until then let me know what you think.

Again I am not the best concept artist but I defiantly wanted to re imagine the weapon a little. Kind of towards the gears of war style weapons in my reference pictures. Let me know what you think.

I find that i don't like doing 2d concepts much myself, but a quick model and then some paintovers can get you a long way. Try to get an image, any image, of what the whole thing will look like and we'll be able to give a lot more useful crits and ideas.
