I'm gonna take a go at Mario and Princess peach. Here's a quick sketch of the rough idea. The costume design and the colors are subject to change, but this is the basic idea. Mario (maria) as the burly game hero, and Princess (Prince) peach as the simpering waifish dude in distress.

Awesome concepts! Great transition to opposite genders. I love the tough "Rosie the Riveter" look. And sissy prince works great too.
Are you planning on doing both characters?

Buzzy - Yeah, I'm planning on doing the both of them. Neither one of the gender changes really does it alone, but with both of them together I think it's really funny. If i have the polys I might make a wrench and a parasol too.
Edragon - lol yeah, i have to work on a great 'flee' pose.

It'll be great to throw in Bowser in the loop, but it might be pushing it:dunno: Can't wait to see the final result

I'm working on some quick 3d base meshes at the moment, but i figure I should post up a slight update to the concepts. Mainly it's just some cleanup work and an actual direction for the shoes.

Brilliant concepts. Can't wait to see these take shape...even though your Maria is likely to make my Marioette look more like a distant cousin.;)

Edragon & Dhin - I might try luigi and bowser too if this goes over well, but for the comp i think i'll stick with the duo
Goast - Sorry I'm disturbing you. Oh wait that's what i had in mind. peach says suck it. ( I always get way too attached to peach in the mario kart games, she has a mouth like a sailor.)
Vinsanity - thx i like to think i'm disturbing people
Everyone else thanks for the awesome encouragement.
Here's what i'm working on so far. Still need to give maria a bit rounder profile (modeling cartoony stuff is hard)
I'm still not sure if i want to texture them gritty like in the brawl games or more clean like in 64/galaxy. what you guys think?
I may slow down on this for a bit I'm getting started on the comicon comp too. look for me there soon. I think i'm gonna try to model Lobster Johnson from the hellboy series. Unless (like my wife is telling me) he's to obscure a character. I was also considering Atomic Robo, Taskmaster, and the main guy from Fear Agent. Anyone know who any of those characters are? *hope*

Thanks for the comments guys it really helps me keep working on this. Yeah Ed the legs might be a tad too thick, we'll see.
I got the prince's head modeled today. The shoes are mostly done too, gonna do a slight white snake skin pattern on them but i think i'll do that in the texture.
Let me know what you guys think

Heya guys, i'm Definitely not quad core. I can only work on one challenge at a time apparently. I'm done with the stuff over at comicon challenge and I'm gonna try to finish this up here. I'm a ways away from hitting that mark still.
But I mannaged to build the lowpoly version of peach and get him mapped out. I don't think I'll be able to finish both characters before the deadline (the maria proportions are still really bugging me. If i can finish thus texture up in record time though there might be chance of getting the maria model done as well. With that in mind I'm still shooting to keep the two character total under the cap. Currently peach is sitting at 3,676, and I'm gonna use a 1024. Idealy that'd leave me plenty for Maria and maybe some maria alternate suit pieces.
Here's a screen cap of the normal and occlusion in real time inside marmoset.

well, time for me to get to bed. Spent some time playing with color on this... Gonna take a while longer to get this looking like anything natural... I guess this kind of quality will have to do for this one though...

Looks great man, I love Prince Peach. I am not too into Maria, I don't know she doesn't really seem like a complete redesign as Prince Peach does.
Looking great though, keep it up.
Cheers.

dark_maggot - thanks, yeah, i'm really feeling that the maria won't be finishable in the time frame. But I really like the prince peach. I'll spend a bit of time redesigning Maria and finishing her up after the final for the comp.
So I've been speding a lot of time trying to work out how the specular should look, and what would be a good shading model for this, but then while I was fiddling around with the shader settings I realized that this probably looks a lot better (mario like) flat shaded. So unless anyone can see any reason to spend all this time on the specular I think I'm gonna just use the flat shaded model.

lol! that looks super cute. Great work... I see what you mean about the flat shaded... I kinda like it like that too.

I agree the flat shading fits perfectly in the Mario World.
Keep it up.
Cheers.
