- Liquidbear : thx man
- Blackham : not bad at all for your 2nd model ever in Zbrush. well done
- Pedro Toledo : Cool update on the full body man! Really digging it so far.
Wonder if anyone has ever thought of Duke? Or any of the Quake guys...
I was thinking about sculpting Duke, but decided to go for crash at the last moment. Mainly because he has quite some accesoires on him which would have been tricky with only 2 basemeshes, and also just because I really wanted to do something else than muscled torsos :)
Anyway, here's a small update. Leaves me with 1hour n half. Still lots of work on the hands, shoes and hair.
cheers

I just noticed that a new user, massuman, posted his entry on the final submissions thread
http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=737738&postcount=12
It's a nice model, and I am glad to see the challenges gathering new users - Welcome Massuman :) - but I would like to suggest, for future editions, that we include in the rules that the artist must post at least one wip image on the wip thread.
I just think that the main reason for challenges like this is to improve interaction and sharing among participants, and if you skip the wip thread it kind of looses its meaning (in my opinion).
So, just a suggestion... :)

If i create a weapon or any maechanic thing using some lines, that means that i am creating different base meshes? or just one, the weapon.
Freespace-3DT
12-09-2009, 12:03 AM
Lines would be considered separate meshes. You need to have everything connected somehow, to constitute one mesh. You can use lines and then connect them somehow to the mesh, and it'll be alright.

hmmm so here I am guys... I am not sure I will be getting on this really soon due to finals, but I am finally in a sculpting challenge. Here is my progress. It is Pimple from Battletoads. Not much on him, I was really just getting a feel for his size. I haven't slept in almost 26 hours... We will see how it look when I wake up :D

Hi, I'm new.
This is the first sculpting challenge i participate in.
I'm doin Makron from Quake 4, hope i can achieve the look
I have a Question:
Does this Basemesh comply with the rules?
Face is one Mesh, mechanic Parts are one Mesh
have the parts to be connected?
http://mtmodding.mt.funpic.de/jpg/makron.jpg
Only half of the time left, hope i can finish him.
Sorry for my english
betomagr
12-09-2009, 08:30 PM
Here's what I´ve got in 1 hour 25 minutes. I think its not very good but I'll see what I can do with it.
If its not working I can still make another one and start over ,right?
Freespace-3DT
12-09-2009, 09:04 PM
smoke91: Welcome to the challenge. Your basemesh needs to have all parts connected ( a single element ). What you currently have as your armor is several parts that are just collapsed and attached into one object. So you're going to need to edit that a bit. Makron from Quake IV, eh? I was wondering if there would be any Quake characters. A tip, you're spending too much time on the basemesh - remember the basemesh only needs to give you a general shape that you can start sculpting ( in this competition where 6 hours doesn't give you too much time to mess around with it ).
betomagr: Certainly, you can start over as often as you like, but you can only have one final submission.

nice job eweryone. i like that battle toed and god of war.good ones.
theres my take on war craft 3. orc cheaftain Thrall. about 30 minutes of work. i see some contestants bothered to make more detailed base meshes, so my mesh looks a little like from stone age :dunno:, but its more fun this way:roll: . good luck to all. i'll try to post more of my progress along with a concept.

Some fantastic sculpts here!!!
I've been trying to find the time to start but my work has been insane!
Will try and get started on my sculpt in the next couple of days.....
I'm gunna try RED XIII from Final Fantasy VII (just re-released on PS3 BTW).
Was thinking of doing Abe but decided on this guy as a test for a personal project I want to start.
Freespace-3DT
14-09-2009, 04:57 AM
KREFT: Good start, he's already got a cold stare.
Fernando: Kratos looks fierce, just like he should. I think there's something weird about his elbow, but only from one angle.
Ichiban: The thumbs up in your sculpt says it all. :)
paulius: Simple base mesh is sometimes good from a creative point of view, but your mesh isn't proportionally accurate ( head too big, arms and feet too small ), unless you're making a cartoonish stylized version of Thrall.
3dhorus: Someone likes Baldur's Gate, hehe. Good looking beholder, I'd hate to run into one of those without Minsc ( and Boo, of course ) in my party.
gumby: Yes, didn't think anyone would be doing FF7, but Red XIII really stands out from that cast.
paulius-st
14-09-2009, 05:53 AM
freespace - yes. its going to be something like a caricature. and i think i'll do this one to the end after submiting in the final works thread if i'll have time.

Hey Felipe, if all the fur are separate parts, you could probably try and project the chest and arm's fur into the main mesh, and just keep the hair as a separate subtool.

My first time to use zsphere and I haven't skinned it yet.

Here's what I´ve got in 3 hours of work.
I´m not liking it too much, lol. I think I need to practice a lot.
You've got a base body going there, but now you need to bring in some detail. His face needs the most attention since that is what gives him his personality.
There are two official Claw portrait styles. Realistic:
http://i36.tinypic.com/11uw4s4.jpg
Or cartoonish, like what you see in the game's cutscenes:
http://img12.nnm.ru/e/a/a/c/6/eaac603e7924db71bb85a586a43b33cf_full.jpg
You should choose one of these, and see what are their overall characteristics. What defines their shape and how you can translate those into your mesh through sculpting. Look at the overall details first, and only after those are done should you get to smaller details like wrinkles or fur.

Finally able to start sculpting.i decided to go with shadow from sonic.
heres the zsphere and base skin.
Gumby666-your zspheres seems too be fine.
next stage is adaptive skin.Atm u can press A to see what she looks like skinned.
after your happy with zspheres just click on adaptive skin in the tool tray,to open it up set subd too 2-3 to check how she looks.
when happy click make adaptive skin..
Then you can start sculpting your character..
Hope that helps.

You can use two meshes Victor.
Not two subtools necessarily, but only two separate meshes.

Shiskebab: Thanks for the comment, really I'm working faster than I can, of course a good reference and some techies of traditional sculpture help a lot for a fast work in zbrush hahaha, so the material that I'm using is the mah_clay 01, u can get it in pixologic download center, thanks again.

@victor22 - tauren has only 3 fingers and you kinda modeled the hands too big
i can give you mass amount of reference since WOW has it's own subprogram - wowmodelview in which you can view all models in side wow, and apparently export them to 3ds but i don't think that works
Snake as a boy? Pure genius!

So many last minutes entries! You can just feel the buzz.
Well I ditched Snake as I've spent way too much time on the sculpt to qualify as I am still trying to get my head around Zbrush  Learned a lot from it though and started with a new model. Spend about 3.5 hours on the base mesh :ugh: but will hopefully make up for it when adding the details.
This is what I got so far after about 5 hours:

Some kick arse sculpts!!!
I ran out of time due to being insanely busy at work and the joys of wedding preparations!
Here's my base mesh, it's all I had time to finish :(
This said, I've learnt heaps about zspheres (I had to start again from scratch due to some nasty mesh twists that I just couldn't smooth out) so it's been a very valuable sculpt for me.
I'll finish this guy off in my own time.
Great work by everyone!! Gunna be a hard one to vote on!

really great works everyone O_O
i'd have two question
the first is if there is a way to disable the double face, since when i hav to sculpt thin objects when i pass the pen on a part of the object it affect the opposite face too, and in the same direction, and it's really a problem
the other question is, if there is a way to freeze a group of polygon, since my character has long hairs it would affect the body mesh too, but i need to see the body to pose the hair in a good way :\
jramauri
20-09-2009, 06:28 PM
Unfortunately, it seems I didn't make, as the deadline stays the same, and I'm not finished yet. Anyway, I'd like to post the rest of process here. I'm having a lot of fun with this sculpture. I pretty much finished her body and going to start her hair.
http://www.amauriilustra.com.br/images/sketchbook/Felicia_WIP_04.jpg
@Astaroth: If you mean in zbrush, look at the Brush pallete, it has an option called Backface auto mask, that will help you with thinner surfaces. About the groups, you can select a group and then mask it, to avoid brush strokes affect it. If the hair is a separated piece, like in my model, you can use the option transparency, on the transform pallete.
