Video Game Character
Welcome to THE Eighteenth Speed Sculpting Challenge. Whether you're new to sculpting, to the Threedy forums, or you're a seasoned veteran, come and join in on the Sculpting madness – there's plenty of fun and learning to be had by all!
http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww288/Freespace87/ssc018_poster.jpg
The Rules:
1. The competition will run until the 20th of Septenber 2009, 12:00 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/)); the time between now and then will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries – at which point the next competition should start.
2. You will be supplying your own base mesh for the competition, from which you will start sculpting. You can create your base mesh in any application ( 3dsmax, Maya, XSI, Cinema4D, Zspheres in Zbrush, etc ) using any technique, with no limits other than the number of meshes used. In this challenge, you must use only two base meshes, whatever they may be. Do not use an already made base mesh, you must build it specifically for this challenge.
3. There will be a time limit for the sculpting. Spend no longer than the allocated time limit, then post a screen-grab of your model. No cheating – we are relying on your honesty here!
4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.
5. You will have to supply a wireframe screenshot of your base mesh/meshes along with your final entry image ( see rule 7 ).
6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpt you can produce "under pressure". If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognisable and on topic.
7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it, along with your screenshot of the base meshes used ( see rule 5 ). It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labelling etc., but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "Manage Attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
8. You can create multiple sculpts, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.
9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Submissions thread here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=69558).
These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!
The Prizes:
1st Place: 3 x 3DTotal products from the 3DTotal Shop. These can include our books, ebooks, texture DVDs, Shorts DVDs, training products and 12 month subscriptions to 2DArtist Magazine and 3DCreative Magazine.
2nd Place: 2 x 3DTotal products from the 3DTotal Shop (see above).
3rd Place: 1 x 3DTotal product from the 3DTotal Shop (see above).
Note: We do unfortunately have to limit prizes to 1 book per winner per challenge, due to high postage costs for heavier items. Please note that we cannot offer any non-3DTotal products as prizes, such as the Design Studio Press books, the 3D Printed models, the Anatomy Models or the Artist Busts.
Plus! don't forget the status that comes along with a 1st place Speed Sculpting Winner is always pretty cool! The award you receive is also polished and shiny.
The Brief:
Time limit: 6 hours ( base mesh creation included )
Start Date: 1st September 2009
Deadline: 20th September 2009 ( possibility of extension ), 12:00 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/))
Subject: Video Game Character
There is one driving force that unites most of us digital artists together. No, it's not the latest uber-computer with more GB of RAM than craters on Mars. No, it's not driving naked with a huge flag waving out of... ( oh wait, I should delete this ). The true thing that brings us together is our love for video games!
For some of us ( myself included ) it's what started us down this path in the first place. For others, it's a source of fun and periodic relaxation. For those few who truly immerse themselves into the universe of their video games, it is living a life of unhinged posibility in another world, fighting some one else's wars and living their adventures. But it all comes down to interacting with and playing a character. So naturally we would associate games with the characters that stood out for us the most.
Who is your favourite video game character? There are so many that it would be a shame for me to name a select few for examples. Remember him/her/it ( hence forth referred to as "it" ), visualise it, create a base mesh for it and sculpt it. Feel free to add your own twist to its appearance if you feel like doing so ( call it artist's license ).
This challenge brings a big change to the rules of the game ( see rules 2 and 5 ), meaning that you will be making your very own base mesh for this. In this challenge, you will be able to create two base meshes ( though you can choose to only have one ). The meshes can be anything from someone's head, body, weapon to whatever you can imagine as long as the result will be on topic. Your final character can be only a bust ( head + chest ), but full a body sculpt is highly recommended.
The six hours are both for base mesh creation and sculpting, so don't waste time on minor details unless you've got minutes to spare. Block your mesh out, use reference, check proportions, and keep adding details in controlled iterations, as you subdivide further toward infinity.
You have the option to sculpt a pedestal for your character, regardless if you used one or two base meshes for the sculpt.

So, the base mesh could be a full body or just a portrait sculpt.

Does the time limit include the time you spent modeling the base mesh, or just sculpting time?

NeoGeo: Time limit includes all. We're looking for more sketchy sculpts, with crispy details only if you can manage the time appropriately.

Remeber what awesome things people would sculpt from a simple cube, in our earlier challenges.
Don't take too long on doing an intricate base mesh, it's the sculpt that counts. But now you've got the freedom to do things that you could not with predefined meshes. ( This very topic is a good example )

You make a good point Freespace
Pedro Toledo
01-09-2009, 08:37 PM
Does it mean that you have to create an unique basemesh for this contest? I like to start from a very neutral basemesh that I use for most of my humanoid characters. It is pretty simple, based on Montecristo's mesh that was used on some SSC.
Is it ok to use it?
Freespace-3DT
01-09-2009, 08:40 PM
You need to make your very own mesh for this, Pedro.
A tip is you can build over that mesh of yours.

liquidbear: Awesome! Cintiq rules, I'll get one of those one day too. Don't forget that, at the moment, this challenge is shorter than our recent ones, so don't miss out!
Just to make sure i understand this clearly. We make a base mesh ( a bust ) of a character's face, or characters torso, or weapon, but not a full character? This bust will include both base meshes.
Now..........here is MY BIG question. Can we make something as simple as a cube, and say...sculpt it, make it look cool. Subtract, or by some other mean create a another subtool ( which will be the second mesh ) Then go ahead and retopologize stuff using zbrush, and would that count as both THE final 2 base meshes?
Also, if we are doing this base mesh stuff, and since this is for a game, are we having to uv map and bake normal maps?

To clarify things, you must make one or two base meshes, that can be anything ( from a face, bust, to entire body if you want to ). The second mesh is there for support, in case you need it for whatever ( weapon, accessory, maybe it's a tricky character that needs two pieces ).
Once you start sculpting, you cannot edit your base mesh with substractions, etc.
This is a video game inspired topic, as in you choose your favourite character. That's all, you don't do this for a game, so no need for uvs, baking, or anything. :) Just sculpting.

Hey.. got a question.. can we just use Zspheres to create the 'base mesh' stuff? It's quick, simple and don't have to worry about symetry and stuff...
gumby666
02-09-2009, 03:49 AM
Just bought myself a new system last weekend as my old one disappeared into a cloud of smoke! This'll give me the perfect chance to put it through it's paces!!
This challenge will be a good way to see how everyone works with their base meshes through to 'final' (and get a few tips on what I'm doing wrong).
What's the ruling on using characters from films/books/comics that have been adapted to games (ie: Wolverine, Transformers, Hellboy etc)? Do we need to use character developed solely for gaming or does this crossover make a character ok to sculpt?
freespace - he he he, i know right! :) I have the same problem. Im old school so i cant help it. lol.
gumby666 - i was going to ask the same thing. Can we?
So i had to think this one through. and i decided that i want to do do crimson viper, from street figther 4. She is not only the ultimate sexy killer machine in the new game, but it is also my fav character.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/RaulXpT/challenges/3dt_SC_018_gameCharacter/10293-cviper_large.jpg

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y259/RaulXpT/challenges/3dt_SC_018_gameCharacter/crimson-viper-by-j-estacado.jpg
Now, im sorry i keep asking. But say i decide to only model from the hips all the way to the head. I would make a basemesh of the upper body, head, hair included. Then on the same mesh, i would model a pedestal...Finally, i guess i could use the extra subtool to model the glasses, correct? That would be totatlly valid, right?
Pedro Toledo
02-09-2009, 05:59 AM
When I read the theme I had an idea of which character I would like to model, but just after I saw that we could make our own basemesh I was certain that I would model him... You really need a custom basemesh to make him right.
Anyways, it was one of my favorite games (back on the first and second versions) and Goro used to make my life miserable :P
A little less than three hours, about 30-40 minutes for the basemesh.
I would suggest having separate time for each step. Like, 5 hours for the sculpting, 1 hour for basemesh (6 total), and in case someone wants to use a pre-made basemesh, he or she would just have the 5 hours for sculpting. After all it's a sculpting challenge...
Well, just my two cents.
Zlatovous
02-09-2009, 06:08 AM
That Goro is killer!
I will participate too, which will be fun, 'cos I just started to learn ZBrush and all I did was three sculpts. But I am here to learn, right :-)
I am thinking of Nameless One or Max Payne...
Freespace-3DT
02-09-2009, 07:42 AM
Anoxic: Welcome aboard!
dPunisher: ZSpheres are OK.
gumby666: Now I would strongly suggest doing an original video game character, even though thousands of comics/movies characters eventually got into games. ( heck, we might have a favourite comic book superhero or something in the future, and we don't want to overlap topics ;P )
Neto: Yes you could have one base mesh for her hips-torso-head-hair, and one base mesh for her glasses. This is one of the scenarios I was thinking of when I said two base meshes :) Tip: You can use a separate "third" mesh for your pedestal if you want. I remember C Viper, she packs quite an electric punch, hehe.
Pedro Toledo: Good suggestion, I'm definetely going to think about it. This challenge is really a beta-test for the new set of rules to come with the great revamping of the forum. So far, it seems people like providing their own base meshes. And Goro looks awesome so far! Nice use of your support base mesh :)
Zlatovous: Nameless One would be much more easy to sculpt than Max Payne, in my opinion.

not to come off rude or anything, but shouldnt this competition be about pure video game characters and not characters from other mediums that have had games made about them. i mean there are an endless amount of them so it shouldnt be hard to pick one.
here is mine. This is 3 hours worth of work. Doing the base mesh was tough game. Im not too sure about my proportions, and the face def needs more work.

Neto: Good start. I'm curious how you're gonna integrate her into that pedestal. Proportionally speaking, her head might be a bit too big vertically ( I know her hair is freaky in the game too, but yours is like 4% bigger :) ) and that ear is gonna eat us alive.

As I said in the challenge brief, you can do anything you want ( head, bust, full body ). It all depends on your preference and how you thing you will balance the time you have available between quantity and quality. The final submission should be a screenshot of your entire sculpt and a wireframe screenshot of your base mesh ( at subdivision zero ).
Lol...I know man. I keep poking those ears back they keep biting and barking.
Well wut I had in mind was to mold the pedestal like a marble block and engrave her name on it.

Cool start Neto and Nato :)
Since I don't want to waist time trying to guess the right proportions while working on the model, I thought it would be a good idea to make a paintover to visualize some proportion tweaks and add-ons, before I restart the clock.

This is what i got. I got one hour left. And i am trying to decide if i should use the second base base and model a cobra wrapped around her arms. Or if i should just fine tweak the topology and call it done.
Some of the things i wanted to work a little more was the face, right now she is supposed to kinda be smiling a bit, but not to much. Or maybe change the pose to something more sexy. I feel the hair needs a bit of more work.

I hope it is, Neto :) After all it's not much different from a simple symmetry function, where you work on one side and all the work is simply projected, on the fly, to the other side.

I know we're supposed to use 2 base meshes. But can we retopo to get to 2 meshes? or are we thinking more...it's a stone sculpture and we get two blocks? Am I asking this question right? Alright...if I do up my mesh can I do a ball for a head, a box for a shirt, a simple hand for the hands and then retopo them all back down to give me 2 meshes? or are we thinking more...you get two to work with?
With six hours I can probably do this evening as I have **** else going on so I need to know soon. Hmmm...I sound pushy. :)
Freespace-3DT
03-09-2009, 04:42 PM
Well here's the beauty of you doing your own base mesh: you do whatever you want to it before you start sculpting. Just as long as there are only two meshes ( when you start sculpting ), and you've created them specifically for this contest.
So that means we can't retopo after we start sculpting. Sighs.....there is always somethimg about this challenges...that makes it more challenging! Lol

liquid bear: Allright man, the second mesh can be eyes, but they need to be connected on the inside to form one mesh ;P Sort of like a wire or somethin', otherwise you'd be having 3 meshes to work with. I'll make sure to sort eyes out for future challenges, in a more user-friendly manner. Now... All of ya! Follow me.
CleT0: I do belive I've had the pleasure :)
Cleto- looking good man. A few things i've would have done before starting modeling was belvel the edges of the knife so you should have a hard time trying to harden the edges.
Also, if you are going with the pyramind head from the movie. Then one of the arms is bigger than the other. And that's the one that he uses to carry his sword.

The eyes are a bit too far apart, the nose is too bulged up and the cheek bones are too powerful for a woman's face. Here, look at this for some proportion ideas:

well no cintiq this morning :( so i just went ahead with the challenge and hope to squeeze in a second sculpt before finish .
This is 1 hour into the process only worked on the top half of the body and never got to his hands yet so still a lot of work ahead but good fun so far :)

liquidbear - shame about the cintiq! Still your Abe is coming along nicely. I was planning to sculpt the same legendary gaming icon. Still one of my favourite games! Ballistic have a great book of the Oddworld art out. Can't wait to get started on my version (sure it won't be as good as your's!). Just a minor critique on his ribs. I think I could only count 3 on your abe and I think he should have five that extend down lower. It's only early on so I'm sure he'll evolve.
Great stuff from everyone!!!

Wow, thanks Ghost. The neck is actually already 4 sided, you just couldn't see from the angle I posted. The only triangle I have on the mesh is on the back of the hand, I'm hoping it doesn't cause to many problems (the same with the shell I guess :dunno:).

Sauron.... A quick question before you get in the sculpt will spiderman count for this challlange because aint he originally a comic book character. Best to get that check incase you spend all that time then get disqualified as you post in your final entry
Freespace-3DT
06-09-2009, 01:15 PM
That's right, Spiderman ( though he did appear in several games - some fun, too! ) is at origin a comic book character.
Now this is tricky territory, because most comic book characters have been in video games and would qualify for this topic. But then they're not originally video game characters, are they? And we might do a sweet comic book theme in the future.

goast666
06-09-2009, 02:04 PM
paulius-st - I think if you're going to do an orc you're going to have to pick one from a video game and do that one. If you just do an orc, that is what everyone will think when they look at it. If you do an orc that stands out as iconic (I can't think of any). Then it should be okay. My 2cents anyway. And I have never heard of that character :P but I think i want a purple pompador (spelled that wrong) now.

Yeah I agree, we should keep it with original game characters as there is plenty of choice.
A question regarding the basemeshes: Are we allowed to duplicate a basemesh? Let's say my character needs 2 guns...Identical ones though, so I can just duplicate the base gun?
Pedro Toledo: Sweet looking Goro man!

I don't think you can copy the gun. Earlier in the thread someone asked about eyes and freespace said they needed to be connect and one "continuous" mesh. So if you use your 2nd mesh for eyes you have to connect them inside the head.

Baron3d - Looking sweet man. He seems to be missing something important though...(coughHEADcough) :P
Sauron - I don't think the punisher works for the comp. Video game character first is how I'm reading the brief anyway. While the punisher has been in video games he was just an adaptation of a comic character. While say, Lara Croft was a video game character first, then a comic and movie and such. Same goes for Gears, Mario, Sonic, things like that. I'm sure Freespace will let you know either way though.

Goast - thanx man! :)
To tell u the truth I'm super tempted to just make a whole brand new chacter of crimson viper. Wut I mean is make a completly new model without the contrains of this comp. But then again, that's a lot of work lol. Migth just be easier to do a cellphone and the glasses and call it done.

Liquid, you might want to make that all one color. I don't think we get different colors for this comp. I don't want to see that sweet abe get knocked out because of something simple like that. If you have the extra half hour you should mess with his left shoulder, it looks like when you posed him it is falling in on itself.
liquidbear
06-09-2009, 10:38 PM
hmmmmm you might be right .... i will change it for the entry just take that as a update :P
Freespace or any mod do i need to make it all one solid colour or is different colours ok to show the different characters ?
yo liquid. that is looking rad!
I will have to agree with goast, man. For presentation purposes, i highly recommend that you keep your stuff one solid color, prolly also use just one mat. Wut happens is, abe now is too dark, the creature is alright, and the pedestal is another color. My eyes get lost and distracted. They want to look at abe, but the color of the creature breaks the unity between the objs. Just a thought, thats all.
Also, if you still have some time left. I would back and polish the base a little bit more. You could smooth twice and get crisper edges and that sort of stuff out of your mesh

Using different colors is allright for the two base meshes.
Everyone who's ready with their sculpts, don't forget to submit them in the Final Submissions thread, along with a wireframe of your basemesh.
Keep up the great work, people!

Hey guys!
When I read the theme I had an idea of which character I would like to do, but this is one of my favorites game and character Kratos, God of war is very a good game to relax is just kill everthing that moves on the scene and kratos is also awesome hahahhhhhhhhha
A little less than three hours, about 20-30 minutes for the basemesh.
This is my progress during 1 hour and 45 min in this project and I hope to finishing him in more 3 hours but i dunno.

Congrats guys there are pretty cool sculpts, keep it up.
I will post something as soon as I get some time to do so. cheers
Grapix - Its Mario! :) Nice detailing!
Baron- I really like how organic the armor feels and looks.
HardTack - good job on finishing tho! I think part of the problem you had was that you tried to model the little parts on the mesh. On the cannon, bevel the edges before going to zbrush, keep the base mesh round and nice, where it needs to be round and nice. The rest. On your final sculpt most of it, looks very squarish and blocky.
To give the edges between armor parts more depth, draw an alpha as your line and do that all around your model 1st. Invert that selection, and from the deformation tab, do an inflat in the negative axis. Go back with the pinch and flatten brushes. to sharpen and bevel the edges a little bit more.
Freespace-3DT
08-09-2009, 04:14 PM
liquidbear: Sorry to hear that, man. Sure it's fine if you show the lowpoly wireframe as unposed.
Baron3D: That armor looks great, very nice blending of organic shapes into inorganic. But you went 30 minutes over the 6 hour deadline.

Very well, looking forward to your next sculpt. You do good stuff. Talent or training, I don't know :)
However, we have that six hour deadline for a reason, so I will have to remove the sculpt from the final submissions. Also, when you submit for this or future challenges please read the rules for submitting - you need to attach the image through our forum's Manage Attachment option, and in the case of this challenge ( and probably future ones ) you need to also show us ( in the final submission thread ) the low poly wireframe of your basemesh.
Pedro Toledo
08-09-2009, 08:57 PM
If I may give my two cents here... I would rather have the 6 hours limit as something not so rigid... To me if you passed only 10% you should not be disqualified. 30 minutes doesn't sound too much for me in a 6 hours limit.
It may be just me though...
Freespace-3DT
08-09-2009, 09:52 PM
Suggestions are always welcome.
However, if we let pass 30 minutes here, then next time we will have to let pass 45 minutes, then someone will want to take his time and completely disregard the deadline. It's escalation. Besides, weren't people asking for shorter timelimits? :)
Nevertheless, with the new challenge system for the forum upgrade ( next month! ), there will be sculpting challenges with timelimits, and without. This challenge we're in now is a hybrid between what we've had so far and what's coming next, to see if people like bringing in their own base meshes as opposed to having one given to them.
Pedro Toledo
08-09-2009, 10:26 PM
Besides, weren't people asking for shorter timelimits? :)
Haha, yes, that sounds familiar
But even though I defend shorter time limits, I think a 10% flexibility could be acceptable.

Alright...as to the debate on basemesh or no basemesh. I like having a base mesh when there is a crazy deadline. 4-6 hrs. If I have a premade head or body to start from I don't have to waste time getting the mesh down, then waste time getting the basic proportions down. I can immediately start working on form and silhouette. Also, if a client were to give me a stupid deadline like this and I took the job for some crazy reason (xtra $$ probably). I sure as hell am not going to sit down and make a mesh for the project. I'm going to grab all the previous meshes I've made and make them work for this one...so in the essences of a true "time" factor, I would pull out all the stops...so to speak.
For one without any time restrictions I don't mind at all using that time to work out as mesh as I can take my sweet ass time in some 3d modeler. Granted...if Z3.5 comes out that might change my way of thinking on that. Sculpted base meshes...ahhh...my dream come true.
Anyway. Great work everyone! Daxter, awesome. Battletoad, awesome. I'm missing something in there too...actually probably a lot of them if I remember. Anyway, great work everyone. Way to make me look bad :)

Definetely. If you have screenshots of him at the 6 hour version, you can submit it. Don't forget to attach, and don't forget a wireframe of the low poly base mesh. :)
After you're done submitting him, you can continue working on him as much as you like and do whatever you want, since it is your work and it's out of the competition once you've submitted. There have been members that went on with their sculpts after the competition and what they managed to do was amazing. ( no deadline, retopologize, texturing, etc )

You're spending way too much time and effort on the base mesh. The base mesh should be extremely simple, just enough shape in it for you to start working it in the sculpting software.
