So what should we do next. Before you toss out your ideas, keep in mind this next one needs to be on the quick side of things. Something that can be done in 2 weeks.

How about something like a weapon challenge. Medieval weapons, or futuristic firearms. Something that should be easy to complete in 2 weeks.

I like the medieval weapons idea but I'm also starting to get into architectural modeling/texturing. Maybe a small, 1800's miner type shack/house setting?

I got another idea for a character modeling challenge, whenever you guys wanna do another month-or-so challenge. Though I'm totally not entering another low poly comp for awhile (I'm gonna take personal break to finish up some work, and start learning myself some Maya and ZBrush. I gotta get more competitive with y'all...).
Anyway, how about Disney/Marvel Mashups, whenever you guys are doing another character modeling low poly comp? Something like this:

(I did that for another reason like two weeks ago, but it is really perfect considering the events from last week)
For now though, how about game consoles. I got inspired from this list:
http://www.ign.com/top-25-consoles/
But y'know, you could make up sh** too. The SEGA Phoenix, or the Microsoft Xboy. Y'know, the systems people always talk about (the Phoenix just being what I'd call another SEGA console, for obvious reasons). Or hell, just make up a system all together. Make a Threedy Total branded machine - I dunno. It should be a good little challenge for a 2 week period.
I like the disney idea. We can take a character and completely twist it. Like a badass Mickey...??

I'm thinking if we do a character it will need to be no more than 1200 tris with a 512 texture map.

Why don't we return to fantasy basics and do a dragon bust. I think it would be challenging to get our original designs to fit into 1200 tris and a 512 texture map, but we could focus more on facial details as opposed to full bodies.
I's also be up for a more difficult challenge such as a transforming object with a one stage/2 stage presentation so it doesn't seem to much like an animation challenge. Something like a transforming machine that has a humanoid form and another form. Even something like an everyday object such as a yo-yo that changes into a mech. Something simple.

for a quick contest idea. It could be a quick game environment challenge, or innovative props design (spatula rocket launcher), bust of a horror house, etc. Those are my suggestion.

You could also go really low poly, like something for a mobile platform; 500 tris max, 128x128 texture (64 colour colour map, 1-bit alpha (clipping alpha) only. No normal/spec/bump/etc).
Maybe a duo for this, hero vs evil boss. (making both models)
Or maybe even a small set peice using very low specifications.

I like the disney/marvel idea with platypus_green's low specifications.
I like the idea of a weapons contest, trying to think how to make it more interesting though.
Perhaps weapons with more thought considered for gameplay, very much like weapons in TF2? (i think this is my first post in 5 years :hmm:)

I am too for some weapons, wheter they are cold or fire, I am up for anything.
Congrats Rae :-) You don't see this happening every day

Weapon sounds good or the low specs stated previously for an enemy minion kind of character

Why can't we have full time challenge?

PSP spec. Transformer or Mech. anything psp spec would be fun to see.

Only two weeks? Does that mean something big is on the horizon then or are you going on holiday (slacker ;))?
If it's that quick then it would probably need to be a weapon/prop challenge instead of character or bust as those of us with full time jobs would be hard pressed to get anything complex done in time, unless it was a really low poly spec like platypus_green suggested (though 256x256 for the texture would probably cause less headaches)

great call to make it around 2 weeks. at least I have a hard time managing the steps in longer competitions.

i did a pretty low poly character a while ago. was a Helghan soldier. 1000 tris(could be 2000...) and a 512 texturemap. that was so much fun. i learned a lot with regards to using the resulotion to its fullest potential. been having trouble getting that across on higher res textures tho...
what im trying to say is, maybe do something like that. a very low poly character or prop or scene with a very low res texture.

The Idea of some small work (low count and small texture) sounds fun. I like the idea of a weapon comp, but it definitely needs to be more focused than "weapons" I can think of a couple focuses that might reign in the ideas a bit:
- Elemental Weapon, Medieval to modern but must highlight use of classic elements, earth water fire etc.
- Common Object Mash Up - Kinda like the grenade launcher in bioshock that can shoot all sorts of stuff (I never played bioshock i'm basing this idea off the original concept art they did for the game)
- Steampunk weapons. Everyone loves steam punk right? Anything absurdly steam powered.
- DaVinci Designs that work. Model anything he designed as a working weapon. (I can dredge up lots of reference for this if y'all want to go with this one) I suppose not just DaVinci but anything that seems like something he'd design. Think heavy wood machines.
I think we could come up with something cool if we go ahead and narrow it down to weapons and spend this discussion time focusing on what type of weapons. Any other nominees?

I'd much rather do a low poly character maybe PSP or DS specs.
A 256 (128 of the extremists) comp could be cool. Themed Character, Vehicle, or Scene using only a 256 map (Spec, Def, Normal, etc) and 256 tri for the model... Hell you could even specify a color pallet of 256 colors. Fixed Orthographic camera could also be thrown in to give it that out school feel.
I'm thinking a Steampunk Old West Theme would be cool (alla 'The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.')

No voting then... Your choice mate. Pick and be damned/praised/meh'd in equal measures ;)
I'm off to Utah (oh joy...) at the start of October, so the sooner the better for me too!
Pick mine, pick mine... and be damned! :D
