The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified.

4). You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post two images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

and im sure anyone with cats would agree, they provide the best wake-up service :D

rocneasta

every time i see "texture time 2 min" "render time 5 min" and with such results, makes me take my life away for w8-ing 2h-12h for a clay render :(

cat is not by definition an alarm clock but can be more than that, including waking you up during the night, since she finds it fun to push things to the flow which in return makes a BANG-ing noise

Tank[NL]
10-09-2009, 11:46 AM

the trick is to use really low setting for the clay render. and a bit higher for the actual render in my case.

That was the plan.
Haha thanks!

I'm not satisfied with those puzzle pieces though..
Could I split up my modeling time?
Since I spent 44 minutes, use the 'remaining' 16 to fix up the pieces?
Or does the model have to be created in one go?

Zlatovous
11-09-2009, 06:14 AM
Thanks ClassicGamer, nice to hear those things in the morning :-)

It was quite easy to model once you put down on paper your topology first. I started with 16 sided cilinder, pick one top polygon, deleted the rest and then inserted few edgeloops to make base for cilindrical holes. Then it was same old 8-sided circle cutting and some cleaning. Finally, I cut the longer hole, deleted all unnesecary faces, placed extra edgeloops for crease and cloned it 15 times. Then just weld all vertices, turbosmooth and all done. The rest of the model was simple compared to this

You have too beautiful starter, modeling is very detailed and clean and the renders are very nice. I especialy like the little light, nice touch

Edit: [rocneasta] thank you for reminding me! I thought this challenge was 2 hours for some reason and spent that time so my entry is def. DQ'd. I was not trying to omit that information on purpose - if I really wanted to cheat I could have just said I spent 60 min :P. Anyway here is just the beauty and clay renders - crits welcome.

here is my entry, my Oregon Scientific alarm clock. Please note, I worked on a mesh for the casing and ran into difficulties (and even posted on these forums to find a workaround). eventually I gave up and started over (restarting project and time) . I am unsure if this is grounds for a DQ since I spent time on an "alpha mesh"

Well i had a bit of luck shine on me, otherwise i could not have done this model in time - i basically spent 50 minutes on fixing the profile geometry of this clock, since it's wooden and made out of a kit - meaning all elements have the same width so it was easy to model and a bit of a pain to construct it all. Fortunately i found a PDF file, broke it to vectors and used it as a huge help in drawing out the parts, mostly arrayed elements and concentric objects, lines etc

so in a nutshell
50 min to draw the profiles - by fixing the geometry imported or by redrawing some parts
8min 53 sec to assemble them all - again PDF contained step by step, numbered instructions on how to get it in working order
30 sec to rotate the bugger in place, since it grew in size on disk and strained my old craptop

anyway nothing fancy, but clean models

things i wasn't able to do are the numbers as shown in the reference pictures (made holes by subtracting half of a sphere) and really define the pendulum cord, so that part is a bit off, forgive me but i lacked in time

rocneasta that's awesome, only in autocad,
autocad is good at making this stuff, its awesome!
though the cog splines can be made faster in 3dsMax,
by just making something like a 50 (for example) sided circle, and deleting every segment exept 3, then remove the center one, and make the cog profile between the 2 spline parts,
then remove the outer parts, rotate the spline along its pivot (which is still at the center) for (1/50)*360 degrees, and weld all the connecting splines,

rocneasta
12-09-2009, 09:16 AM
yea acad is good, but i would like to dedicate a full year to learn how to model and texture in 3dsmax and then move to zbrush - reason being in acad you basically don't have smooth /in acad2010 you do but it's generic, not really sure about the results/ so what you basically do is proper profiles, and everything has to be made with precision, since autocad can model pretty decent, but when it comes to MODIFYING it blows.

not to mention the various effects you can apply to your 3d models where someone in acad if he hasn't drawn it out like that - well there isn't much help.

for example the grapes i did back in SMC#73 i had to draw the curved spline (curved by x,y and z axis) by defining it's coordinate points in x,y,z - so my piece of paper looked really covered with points which i measured with a caliper then noted the coords repeating the process around 30 times - that way i got a nice clean spline in 3D and made a profile by which i then made a solid object.
you can't really click on a spline and then move it by gizmo in 3d - doesn't work that way :(

BUT, to his defense i never use icons, toolbars, falling menus, palettes etc - all commands can be accessed via command line and the workflow for such a user is really fast - example A=arc, L=line, C=circle, REC=rectangle etc...

Here is my entry!
(sorry i didnt made the portal clock, might come later if i got some spare time before the deadline arrives)

I made a nixieclock, it mixes retro with modern looks

to make the numbers glow i increased the spline width, and applied a self illuminating material, no glowing external lights used for the number illumination

Also i had my computer render a closeup with a DoF (taking about 20 hrs),
Though it doesnt look good when its scaled down, so its not included,
If i am allowed (can i CG?) i'll post that render aswell in its full rez.

yeah, i gotta agree. this one turned out great. that thin wirecage is a really nice detail and it doenst really show up on the other render, which is a shame.

thumbs up, rachel

H2O - first i couldn't see the predator - thought it was where old people pee in when they can't get out of bed :o:o:o. few second later when i noticed the laser attachment a light went one :D.

Rachel - that's a cool clock - my favorite of em all so far. beautiful rendererd as usual.

hey i got a litte update,

i just completed the modelling of my portal alarm clock radio!

so the radio isn't a lie,
the cake however is a different story ;)

i might post it tonight or tomorrow, when i got it shaded and presentable with wires and stuff.

rocneasta

i started making a funny yet effective alarm system - ended up spending too much time on the clock it self so will make another go at it but with much simpler clock as a base for it.

uploading this after rachel is really counterproductive even if i made an awesome entry...

You might wanna upload the clay render as well along side the beauty render, as stated in the rules.

The Challenge Rules

1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)

Rachel, where I can buy them? ;) Is nice audiophile alarm watch ;)

Rachel vd M
14-09-2009, 07:59 PM
hey Mak.cz
you can get them at chronotronix.com, though they are not very "cheap"

anyways entry time for me!! (again)

I made the alarm radio clock from the Portal game,
Also, i couldn't resist making the table, the mug and part of a typical portal testroom (this is how you first find the radio),
Though the extra props and set were made outside the challenge time.

Another extra is the background of the wire picture, it's a wallpaper i made in 2007, just after portal came out,
i made it in photoshop and its inspired by the monitors you see hanging in the game.

here it is, i hope you like it!

Rachel vd M: For this was a triumph.....
(I couldn't resist)
Very nice entries all,

le1setreter: Very nice clock, Love the inside contraptions. A quick tip: The speed modeling challenges are based a lot off of the wire frames, on your clock they are a bit hard to see, you might wanna try solid shaded wires frames (I think those are the right words). Or something like the other wire frames here. Just my .02$...

Rachel vd M: Your tube light glowing entry is awesome. And the render that took 20 h is amazing.
Classic Gammer: Nice second starter, very cool render.
H2O-3DT: Very photo realistic render, Nice idea, when the alarm goes off, do the lasers fire??

Big thx :o
After several failed "normal" alarm clocks, i was watching the governator of California in Predator :)
So i was thinking " you are one ugly....alarm? :)"

Now, i have to transform back to the evil moderator.
There are some DQ's right now.
Please take another look at page 1, and read the rules section carefully.

Lol, Its not evil moderatoring, its reminding people of the rules, which is nice so they don't get DQ.
A transformers alarm clock would be cool. (Saw your reference to transform, first thing that popped into my head.)

Hahaha, modeling inspiration comes form everywhere. Action movie----> Alarm clock :p

alarm, alarm system, punishment  i think i nailed the order from bad to worse when it comes to something that must awake you, abruptly most of the time.

This should fall on the border line of alarm system and punishment for "ever-so-sleepy" lot... :p

haha awesome entry,

though i see that the defenition of "alarm clock" is getting bigger and bigger ;)

maybe i could make nuclear missle, it goes off at 0:00 hours, and will surely wake you up

16-09-2009, 12:32 PM
well i had trouble in my younger days to wake up at all - long nights combined with the desire to sleeeeeeep in the morning regardless was i tired or not.

This alarm system would do wonders for me although i like it the way it was :) sleeping wise ofc :p

Tick tack tick tack... can you hear it? Its your biological alarm clock! And its IN YOUR CHEST!

I had many ideas how to make this entry... till H2O made that predator helmet. So I decided its time to hoist my colours :D

And I apologize, I really underestimated facehugger and the complexity of the model so its not much of a show this time. I wish I had more time. About 30 minutes would do the trick :)

So: created in 3Ds Max 2008 in 60 minutes.

TheBat

Finally found the time to participate again. Good practice! Too bad there's no more time left for texturing. It was loosely inspired by van den vos flip clock, and it makes a loud ringing sound when it goes off.

Very nice entries all, very high quality entries!

Hope to see you all next week!

Cheers

This is crazy, JAPO, this is crazy... How exactly would it wake you? By making some noise or jumping on your face and raping your throat with it's tail?

Just perfect, very nice model and render. How did you texture it? It is procedural or unwrapped and painted? Looks very nice.

And here is my entry-non-entry. I was thinking what to model during school and this challenge poped in my head. Well, as it was hard to track how much time I would spend on it, I just decided not to make this an entry and model it with no limits. So, ladies and gentlemen, this kept me awake during a lot of boring lessons. Hope you like it!

Well JAPO's model is a bio one, meaning that needle is attacked to either your heart or brain - it's length meats both criteria - so when the time comes for "it" to awake, it shocks, fuses wrong nerves together, or whatever the case may be and Voila - instant RUDE awakening :p

JAPO
16-09-2009, 10:13 PM
hehe thank you Zlatovous, but there are way too many things I am not satisfied with on my model :) YOu did perfect model with that wheel, rocnesta with his autocad madness (would take me a day at least), rachel with her fallout clock, like I said I like those cute reldersons wooden clock from the beginning, and I must not forget psychomantis and his clock that will probably eat you and your family if you dont wake up :D Oh and predator helmet that gave me the idea. Love this week entries and cant say I envy judges :)

Ad the clock, its not real facehugger, there is clock in the... reproducing area. You should be able to manufacture it, the coiled tail has enough area to keep the top stable. But yes, it may spring its tail and jump at you ( given the metalic parts in the clock, it may even give you a black eye). :D

Ad texturing, since I made the model today after work, I didnt have time for unwrapping, not mentioning painting my own texture. There is simple spherical UVW on it with SSS mental ray map. On first two skin layers there is some rough skin picture, adjusted to light green and light pink. I played with the settings for a bit so that light from the front and from the back goes through to some extent creating the wax surface. The reproducing area has the same material, only without the skin picture and slightly different colours.

You crazy cat lovers! Can't you see they are sneaky creatures, waiting for chance to drink all of your milk...

Anyway, here is my entry. It needs few things to match the reference pic, but ran out of time. But I may revisit it and finish my work someday, as I want to rerender it with new materials (they look bad, but for now I am wrapping things up).

very nice :)
