The Challenge Rules
1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.
2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified.
4). You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.
5). Post two images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.
8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.
10). Only 1st place can claim a prize.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

nice theme, so much options!
though are things allowed like farm animals?
or "different" types of farms, like a weed, ant, or even a crocodile farm?
...render farm? Joking :)

Hello everyone a big thanks to H20-3DT for closing down last night's SMC and launching this one, I wasn't too well, I had my Flu Jab yesterday and funnily enough felt worse for it lmao.
Anyway this one was my idea, Farm Life you can literally go nuts on this SMC, just about everything is fair game here, so you can opt for anything to your level of expertise.
If you are a beginner to these challenges or modelling you could model farm tools or a flour mill, if you are advanced and an old friend to these forums you can model anything from stables, farm cottages, farmhouses, water tanks, pig pens, heck even the whole countryside. Additionally you can model Pigs, Sheep, Ducks, Cows, Horses, Chickens, Foxes Attacking The Chickens, Lambs, Goats, Rams, Bulls, Geese, Turkey's, Mice, Gerbils, Rats, Water Voles, Sheep Dogs, Pet Dogs that live on the farm, you could model Tractors, Trucks, Combine Harvestors, Troughs, you could even model a farmhouse kitchen with farmlife view out of the window! (i'm doing that one lol) phew!!!
More importantly you can model realistically or opt for a cartoon look, you could even do a space farm with mutant 3 headed pigs with pet humans in pens, but try to keep it fairly close to the subject matter.
There's plenty to choose from, i've began starting on my first entry which will be a nice farmhouse. Remember you've got a whopping 120 mins and a whole 2 weeks for this challenge which might even be extended as after this challenge we'll be going onto the special challenges for the entire site.
Everything understood? Good!
Go get modelling and show us what you can do!

seems like this flue gave you extra strength and enthusiasm since you went all out on explaining this competition even down to the details and motives :)

We won't be going far from the current SMC, this new Monthly challenge that will spread across the entire forum, with the same theme. With all the current sections building different things. More will be announced after the site re design and then things will all become clear.
I've made a start of my Farmhouse Kitchen scene, i'm going to have fresh bread and a converted barn style kitchen with the split doors normally used for stables :)
The hard part will be texturing as always for me, but i'm enjoying the modelling part already, it seems a while since i've modelled properly and i've got the flooring, ceiling, door, door hinges, door locks, windows, window frames and handles modelled in 14 mins! i'm on fire lol. Still i've got another 106 mins left to play too :)

OK well here's my farmhouse kitchen scene, i've added some extra models to help dress the scene, of which aren't displayed in the wireframes. I needed the whole 120 mins because I took my time on this one. The dog, duck's head, cobs, bread, potatoes, carrots and tomatoes and kichten cabinets were easier to model because i'd modelled them before for my grocer's scene, but they are all modelled from scratch again :) That's the beauty of these SMC's is you get to model certain things from scratch over and over again and it get's easier and easier once you've done it a few times. The dog is from an old Odie homage I did a while back :)

This calls for some Orwellish entry. Let's see...
Great entry, CG! Very nice mood and those extra objects makes this scene come alive :-) Good to have you back and feeling alright
Lots of material to deal with. . . . be interesting to see some of the entries.
To make things infinitely easier on the mods, pick a single theme for the month, and let the various artists take a crack at it. Speed modelers, low poly types, sculptors and painters would all take a stab at the same topic for the month with the varying rule-sets each currently employs.
Would be interesting to see I think.
Just a thought :D

hey eydi,
next time when you post something make sure that you remove the picture from the quote,
also when you want to say 2 things when someone hasn't replied yet, please edit your first post
it makes the forum look much cleaner :haha:
and when you want to compliment people, just use something simple with bold text for the username like:
"hey Mr. lolcat, that entry looks awesome!!"

since beauty is an optional, you post 1 wireframe, 1 clay and an optional beauty render. but you may post wire + beauty that has the clay within itself

avishek - Looking good really cool scene with excellent models and I love that cartoon beauty shot :)
Hooray tommorow I finally get to see a Dentist! I can't tell you the pain i've had to put up with/suffer for the last month or two, the sleepless nights, the crying when the painkillers didn't work and going without sleep is no joke I can tell you. I'd gone without a Dentist for 5 years because my childhood Dentist Practice i'd been with since birth went private and I couldn't afford the yearly fee. And I hadn't had a problem until this year with my teeth and finally with some financial help from my nearest and dearest I get to go to the Dentist tommorow and get some treatment. Toothache is one of the most annoying and painful things i've ever had to endure and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy, I really wouldn't. At last I'll be able to get it sorted and be pain free yay!
This is why i've not been active very much here lately because i've been trying to catch up on sleep in the day etc.
On another note, keep the entries coming in guys and gals there are some really inspired creations.
Kind Regards

Hi everyone,
After a rapid net search, I finally thought of making a flour grinder, that was usually used in villages in India long time ago. People in cities generally don't use this tool for grinding wheat coz its time taking and it needs a lot of strength to manouever. So I choose to make it, since it is very simple, infact it is simplest of all, and also I can't squeeze out time from my office hours to model something complex.
I hope you like it.
(Also there is a picture illustrating on how it was used. You use one hand to rotate the stone wheel and another hand to put in the wheat grains.)
BTW, the entire tool was made of stone.:haha:

silverflame & avishek - wonderful entries!
Disaster! my newly aquired Dentist phoned me up this morning her daughter has been taken ill and they've had to re-book my appointment for the 5th of November! that's the day before my birthday aswell, hopefully i'll be ok to eat birthday cake lol. Until then i've gotta put up with the pain I guess, luckily at the moment i've little/no pain at all, it'll be interesting to see how long that lasts though, it'll be back onto painkillers/salwashes/alcohol etc until then. These things are sent to try us I suppose lol. It couldn't be helped though, I totally understand that the Dentist's daughter comes first and it's just unfortunate circumstances. Oh well i'll just battle on lol.
Maybe I should get back into some modelling to take my mind off it.
I'm just wondering what to do though, maybe a tractor transformer like silverflames, or a super sheep lol. I'll see.
There's some brilliant creativity coming out on this one though, which is excellent to see.
Kind Regards

I'm afraid it isn't that simple here for me, that was the only Dentist I can get access to and the Doctor's hate people going to them with dental pain.
However if I go into town to the pharmacy I can get stronger painkillers to releif the pain completely. That's my other problem as I cannot walk far at the moment, i'm under strict orders to keep walking down to a minimum so I don't develop another foot ucler. If it get's really really bad though, I will geta taxi and get some stronger painkillers from the Pharmacy as they always work well for me. So all is not lost.
Sounds incredibly stupid doesn't it but this is the NHS in the uk for you. I have a friend in the USA that can go anywhere as long as you can pay and get anything done, but it's not that simple here, every other Dental Practice is private, strange but true i'm afraid.
Thank you all for your concern but for the time being i'm feeling good and in good spirits and more importantly pain free at the moment too :)
Now let's get back to modelling! Yay :)
CG.
man CG seriously i hope u get better soon. when i lived in the UK,
i once needed a treatment for 2 broken toes, but i couldn't get no appointment
and the painkillers didn't help after a while, but i had to work. so i understand u're feelings very well.

Hmm.
Oh I just found out some tips that might help if you can follow
Over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) may be used. Take these as directed on the package and around the clock on a schedule while you arrange a dental appointment.
Avoid very cold or hot foods because this may make the pain worse.
Relief may be obtained from biting on a cotton ball soaked in oil of cloves. Oil of cloves is available at most drug stores.
Asafoetida is a good home remedy. It gives fast relief from toothache. Take 3-4 tablespoon of lemon juice and a pinch of Asafoetida to it. Heat it in a low flame and allow it to cool. Take small cotton ball and dip it in the mixture. Keep the soaked ball over the cavity or the paining tooth.
Lemon juice
Lemon juice, lemonade is another effective home remedy for the toothache relief. Fruits like lemon, orange are rich in Vitamin C and hence keep the teeth and gums healthy and strong. People suffering from heavy bleeding from gums, or bad breath should take freshly prepared lime or orange juice. This is one of the important home remedies for toothache.
Pepper
Black pepper is also useful for the treatment of toothache. Make a paste of 2-3 tablespoon of black pepper and a pinch of salt in few drops of water. Apply this paste over the cavity or paining tooth. Black pepper helps in fighting against bad breath, toothache, bad gums, etc. If this paste is applied at least twice a day, it will keep gums and tooth healthy for life time.
Onion
It may sound strange, but it is true that onion is also an effective home remedy for toothache relief. Onion helps in killing the bacteria and other microorganism causing toothache and other related disease. Patient with toothache should chew a small onion for 4-5 minutes daily. This will clear off all the germs hidden between teeth and keep the gums fresh. Place a small piece of onion on the decayed tooth for some time. Onion juice will rinse inside the cavity and helps in killing germs and will relieve from toothache. Do this regularly.
Garlic
Similarly, garlic too is good for the treatment of toothache. Place 2-3 seeds of garlic mixed in salt over the cavity or the paining tooth. Garlic, like onion, helps in killing bacteria and other germs and gives relief from toothache, and poor gums. People suffering from bleeding from gums, or weak tooth should chew 2-3 seeds of garlic early in the morning. This is one of the useful home remedies for toothache.
Mustard oil
Mustard oil also gives fast relief from toothache. It also keeps the gums strong and healthy. Take 3-4 drops of mustard oil and a pinch of salt. Massage your tooth jaws, tooth gently with this paste. This sooths toothache and makes gums and jaws strong. Apply this before going to bed. One of the best home remedies for toothache.
I can understand that this thread is not the right place to discess this but I dont know where else to post. :( And I really wish for your good health. You can read it at your own free time. It might help.

Good luck bro!

@ Arkhar - gz on the first entry, but you have to post wireframe render of your model if possible, or SS

On the second picture, the white render with the wireframe in black is not good ?

in my opinion i don't think it's clear enough but you could w8 for either CG-3DT or H2O-3DT (moderators) to get back to you with this
quote from the rules

Yeah the wireframes should be much bigger, and remember you can have 2 images of both 1280x1024. A clay render and an optional beauty render.

welcome to the SMC sammuelsama
I finally decided to make an entry, after the picture someone posted about render farms, here's my own. I used reactor to position all the CPUs over the place. I hope that's fine to use CG...

thanks, actually, where I'm studying now, we're about to start a new project, make a 3D animation and we already started to think about the rendering process and use more than one computer to do it...so it came from there

Hey guys,
I'm new here with my first attempt at a speed modeling challenge. First attempt at volumetric lighting as well. Any critiques on how to make things look better that are feasible within the time limit would be appreciated.
See everyone next SMC :haha:

Hi DainR, welcome to the SCM . I am sure if you continue to participare here, you will learn how to complete job on time, and also you will get a lot of help from us, coz here everybody is willing to help you with knowledge and ideas. :)
Now let talk about your submission. Since its your first post, it is really worth it. I would personally like to suggest you some points.
Your models are all straight forward with no distortions on the walls and the roof bars. so too much segments are unnecessary. I hope this point will be helpful in your future projects. And for the atmospheric, did you use mental ray rendering? Use Scanline rendering.
Look at the screenshots I have created the simplest way to achieve Volumetric light effect.
BTW: I have also added an Omni light witha very lower intensity value. to give the effect of interior light bounce from the wall.
Remember it is the first step. you can do a lot of settings to get other fantastic effects. I hope it helps you learn. All the best.

welcome to speed modeling challenge Alisor, hopefully you're pumpkin won't be eaten quickly :)
I hope I am not late. I wanted to post this earlier but my internet connection was giving me trouble :( . Hope you like it, it’s a Farmers Workshop :)
*I had to make the image I posted quickly, that’s why it looks bad. :P

you're not too late, i guess i could be too late since i'll start modeling in roughly 10 minutes, but with the allotted time i think i'll manage
Yea...as soon as you finish the model post a picture. Textures can be done later !

I dont really think there is a JOB like that, but you could model stuff for a living, that exists and is still fun, besides you get to make really awsome/detailed models for movies and games ~

well this challenge was a blast, but it ended for me before it started since i had in my mind a scene in which i would model a bunch of tools, a wheelbarrow, few chopped pieces of wood, one wall or entire walls of a shed in the making, it's roof and perhaps a fence or two.
It went all well in the beginning, the wheelbarrow, chopped wood, straps to hold it all in place, but then it was time to model the walls... What better way to do it than brick by brick
by the time i was done, grand total of bricks in 4 walls was 2584 - meaning i waited 12 minutes to load layers dialogue, 10-17 minutes to save the file, 5-7 minutes to refresh the scene after every zooming in and out, not to mention the ordeal i had to go through just to get the camera right
in a nutshell i learned a lot on my way to 2584 bricks (all with soft filleted edges i might add)! I will never do it again! If i do it again it will be payed plus on a better PC than the one with the key feature of 1gb ram and 1gb free disk space etc...
So even if we fail we learn something. 2584 bricks = 29.7MB in file size
It took 34 min to model everything, it took 30 minutes to combine the walls into a room, and it took 2 hours to move things around the scene, set the camera, press SS and press to render 800x600 with lowest quality ever...
the most mind opening and frustrating experience ever, but i must say i have a smile on my face :)
posting my bricks, just as a warning to all those WHO DARE!
Nice Work !!! Rocneasta ~
