Brief Artwork made from my own personal photograph collection.

The Challenge Rules

1). Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive. How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.

2). You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3). Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like and must include a clear and easy to see wireframe of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Wire renders/ Cell Shaded or Screengrab wireframes are acceptable. Any wireframes we cannot see correctly will be disqualified.

4). You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.

5). Post two images per entry which must be no larger than 1280x1024 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k.
1 image for your wireframes and 1 for your clay combined with a optional beauty render.
These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page.
Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials)
will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6). The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7). Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8). Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

9). The Winner must email jo@3dtotal.com to claim their prize.

10). Only 1st place can claim a prize.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!

nice, I'll participate this one for sure...

CG : what if I want to do real time rendering on the viewport? Doesn't say anything about on the rules...

ClassicGamer-3DT

I think that's ok, beauty shots are optional as it is anyway, just as long as there's the clay render that's ok.

LMAO i'm 6 foot 4 so my shadow looks nice and thin, but alas i'm not lol.

I can have candies..............just not much lol.

I did have a burger that evening after taking the photo's.......mmmmmmmmmmm....very tasty too.

I'm spoilt for choice on what to model actually there's so much.

By the way if this challenge proves popular it might return for a longer period after the monthly challenge, as it's really only just to tie you over until Monday :)

Go for a bumper car track, or a ultra-mega-crazy-shamona rocket rollercoaster.
Would love to be in, but my work agenda is more stuffed than a fat turkey on Xmas.

it's Christmas soon, and all the feasts. I'm on the other hand having trouble finding good reference again - seems everyone wants to take "artistic" photos, tripot, exposure set to few seconds by night and instant trash photo, but it's shiny and sparkly

i'll be making a ferris wheel but i can't get any kind of reference as to founding mechanism that holds it in place...

CG too much candies are also not good for your teeth dude. LOL! :P :D. BTW how is your tooth ache anyways?

Nice topic for the mini SMC. :)

ClassicGamer-3DT

avishek - Ain't that the truth lol

rocneasta - It's usally built onto a frame that's part of a truck trailer with a mountable generator that goes off to the side to rotate the wheel around.

I used the picture of ferris wheel in nottingham, added double compartments with benches inside to make it a bit more robust

overall SMC#78 proved more valuable than i thought -i changed my workflow with complex models and i x-refed my elements, made numerous blocks, and decreased all graphical values of graphical representation via screen to below bare minimum - hence i was able to model almost smoothly this time, taking into consideration my slow machine

all in all - 86 seats + 6400 light bulbs - and to think i ran out of time since when i wanted to add details to the waiting room and more light bulbs. it was supposed to be filled with arcade, seats for the waiting guests etc. i had in mind few railings for crowd control but this is it so far

i'll try to get some more models this during these 24 hours or so

Ha! i recognise that wheel - i live in Nottingham.

Think it's about time i start entering these little contests again instead of just lurking all the time so here we are.

Only got time for a quick entry but I've gone for one of those Bungee Slingshots

Ha! i recognise that wheel - i live in Nottingham.

i didn't have the best possible angle in the reference photo, but i did my best to have it look good, ofc in some parts i did bump it up a bit.

and to think i could have asked for some photos :)

Killer entry, rocneasta! Such huge object in two hours, I applaud

Now step aside and let me ride... and don't stop at the top!

rocneasta
30-10-2009, 09:09 PM
tnx bud, i'll make another just as i find one more reference angle to work with...

an idea occurred to me, we get our heads /or our keyboards-mouse together, get some BIG ASS travel agencies as sponsors for 3Dtotal.com and we host a challenge with the prizes of actually traveling to the place we modeled - for instance you model easter islands you win you get to travel and enjoy it first hand in RL

we call it "From model to RL" experience of a life time....

i'll stop daydreaming now, and return to flickr, google, etc

Hello everyone,

Tried to model one of the clowns in the reference photos provided.
time spent : 120 minutes
software used : 3ds max 09
Any suggestions and advice would be most useful - thanks.

rocneasta
31-10-2009, 06:00 PM
this model was far easier to make, had really good reference photos, and i devoted some of the time to actually make the setting of the fair - fence, steps booth...

hope you get the craving for the rides as i did while modeling

p.s. i did the chains to hold the chairs - made two, the rest were to be added along the line that connected the chair and the pivot point of the carousel. for the chair closest to the carousel pillar i had 386 chain pieces times 4 since 4 of them are holding the chair in place. Unfortunately the need for resources went up, so i was forced to only connect them with a thin cylinder that represents rubber. not the best solution since those chains really give authenticity. but i'll try to do it when i have an entire day to process it, or when i get a better spec to play with...

rocneasta
01-11-2009, 08:02 PM
just came back home, still an hour to go, anyone gonna post anything? i might do a bumper car if i get the chance to have some minutes of undisturbed modeling time...

rocneasta
01-11-2009, 08:59 PM
did the seat, electric pole and the connection to the bumper car, plus the model size before the missus felt some what we deduced to be false labor contractions... at least we're in that state of mind now...

ahh bumper car...

i just linked this thread to a member asking for funfair reference, and i realised my son was born two days after the competition ended, on 3rd of November 2009. it's a bit funny and at the same time amazing to look back retrospectively...
