View Full Version : SMC M#01 - Pables - Legendary Weapon - Ancient Moon's Staff

Yesterday finally an idea broke into my mind. I'm still doing sketches, will post them this afternoon.
"The sages, the eldest masters of our Druids village, used to tell stories about a legendary Staff, carried by the greatest beast lord of all, the greatest king of the Forest, Orion.
It is said, that that staff was made by the spirit of the Forest itself, and to have the power to give life or death...
When Orion died, his spirit melted with the staff, and this land, which had ever been a desert, became the deepest forest"
:D Hope you liked that mini intro(inspired by a mixture of stories I like, haha). More updates this afternoon. Thanks for watching. Good luck to all mates!

Well, I couldn't connect to the forum during some hours. But finally here is my sketch, still need to finish the "foot" of the staff.
If you have any suggestion on something I may change on the design, please feel free to tell me.
Hope you like it. I'll try to start modelling as soon as I can.
look great, i bet the 3d version looks even better.
u gonna use modo ?

Thanks mate! Yes Iam going to use Modo, really love to use it, with 4 o 5 shortcuts you have all you need to model, and makes modelling so intuitive. But now I discovered a problem (well, is not a problem actually) but I have to solve how the half moon (the blade) goes trhough the staff xD... maybe doing a twin blade?, a twisted staff ...mmm, have to thought it seriously.
break the blade and connect the 2nd piece with a piece like the main blade.
edit: quick sketch

Design looks great. This should look really nice in 3D.
I would say either break the blade like bgen said, or make a hole in the handle for the moon to go through.
pables
04-11-2009, 09:49 PM
Yeah the three solutions seem nice to me.
1. As Bgen said, broke the blade
2. AS SR said, pass the blade through a hole.
3. ...make twin blades, each at one side of the staff... but this seem less elegant to me.
The thing is I don't want the concept of the blade- moon to get lost.
well, bed time, tomorrow I'll do some sketches and we will see if you like them.
Thanks for your opinions!

cool concept, one thing that i suggest is that the handle seems weak, looks that it can be easily broken in the first battle.

Thanks phoelix. yeah maybe, Ill try to give ir a more solid look.
Here is what I have atm (70 minutes). Tried to model it with a few polys, Im happy with the progress. Now only have to do the hilt, the hand protector (that thingy that looks like a leaf XD) and the feathers, if I still had time(I hope so), Ill try to do the gems.
Hope you like it. Coments and critics are wellcome, time is running out though, so if you have anything to say, better say it now :P
looks really good pables. u really kept truly to the design.
keep it up.

hi pables, thanks for your support on the zabimaru thread. Keep going with this. I love the witchdoctor look and the topology looks very nice and clean so far. Have you thought of any particular colours for this yet?

Looking good man. The only suggestion I would have now is maybe make the bottom part of the moon a little smaller, so it fits through the hole cleaner. What I mean by that is it isn't really centered in the hole, but by making it a little thinner at the bottom it should fit better.
pables
05-11-2009, 10:03 PM
Well, almost finished, only I have to lift a bit the bottom part of the hole as SR says, also Bgen told me that but I forgot. I will have to use some seconds more :)
Hope you like it, it was really stressing to finish under 120 minutes. The feathers, the gems and al that crap needed too much tweaking.
looks great the finished Staff weapon - i can imagen a Warden or Druid swing this this Axe/staff around while splitting some orc's head, chanting a spell to kill the next victim.
definitly looking forward to the texturized version.

Thanks guys for the comments, I'm really glad you liked it, but hoping you like it even more this beauty render test.
C&C are welcomed!
Thanks for watching

for a better view and more constructive C&C you might try to list the mats that would be used in RL or virtual to make this staff - since we could be arguing did leather come out right, but if you didn't want to portray any leather parts it's all in vain
one detail that's off to me is the central sphere, looks really flat - it could be shiny and giving some lighting effect on objects close to it without loosing the 3d feel
other than that the staff looks nice, gj

Hi pables, I've been quite eager to see this model turn out. I think its good, my only crit would be the weathering of materials. I expected this to have more cuts and bruises. Plus The feathers were such a nice touch, perhaps they could be given more attention with colour so that they are noticable.

Yes you both are right. The only things I really hand-painted myself were the blade and that green...stones? And in my opinion are the parts that came out better. Well, it was a test render, so I decided Im going to paint everything by myself, and not gonna use any images.
Thanks for the comments.
it's coming a long real nice. keep it up pables.

Just another test for the beauty render. Still not so familiar with modo shaders, but I think its coming out nicely. I think Im gonna start again with bigger res, cause I don't like the wooden part quality, I think I can improve it with better res, and I'm gonna fix the diffuse map for the blade, cause I made the cuts too black, and don't like'em.
rocneasta
16-11-2009, 10:33 PM
even though the wood is too shiny to say the least, i like the overall improvements...
pables
17-11-2009, 07:29 AM
Thanks rocneasta. Yes I agree with you, I don't know why the wood is that shiny, yesterday I was having some issues with my computer and maybe Modo bugged. Because I saw that reflections and turned off the wood reflections to zero. But the shine didn't dissapear. I will try to fix that tonight. But Im happy with the progress.

The textures are coming out great so far pables. Definitely turn down the glossiness on the wood, and you got a winner here. I just also hope we get a beauty shot where we can see the other side of that leaf. No sense in modeling it if we can't see it :)
Keep up the good work on this.

Well I started from the beginning with better res for the images. It's very similar cause I wanted the same style, but I like it a lot more now, it is definitely going where I wanted to. I think I will smooth a bit some of the bumps, they like too much hard for me.
Hope you like it!

Looking good so far, however I think you should fix the texture stretching towards the top of the wooden part before moving on with it. Keep up the good work!

the upper part of the staff is where the texture goes belly up - during the length of the staff everything is good, and i like the way you made it look.
perhaps the upper part is just some stretching going wrong...
pables
18-11-2009, 07:13 AM
Yes, thanks Levartho and Rocneasta. I'll try to fix that stretching this evening.
Thank you for your help and kind comments. Texturing has been always hard for me.

Good work pables, you deserved to rest now, sleep for two days with a smile on your face... textures came out nice

19-11-2009, 07:20 AM
Thx rocneasta! Still wanna add some minor texture detail to the blade, the leather handle and do a nice composition, but the overall work is done for me. I forgot to apply the "bronze"(-ish) material to that grey base under the green stones, and to the rings of the feathers(I was sleepy ha ha) but will remember that in next render :)
I like the result of the gems, I painted them as if I were painting warhammer gems :D
Thanks for comments!
