Hello all. First challange here at 3dtotal for me. Sounds like a great theme.
I am thinking more of a modern twist ala Reign of Fire scene, but not sure at this point. I'll start some design sketches tomorrow.

I am not so hopeful. We'd have heard about it long before now.Plus, I would probably have had to pay for a computer upgrade.

Wrong thread maybe?

Ahhh One of those,....

OK, My first version of the 'modern theme lair'.. Thinking I may go the fantasy route. Ill do a few more concepts before I decide.

Thx eyecon!

After a hundred thumbnails, I am liking the fantasy theme more..

'Dragons Kaldara'

"Smoldering volcano valley littered with treasure and long-dead heroes seeking their fortune."

Hmmm,..The trouble with the first one is that I am trying to find a way to have a greater variety of colors. Even the second one would have that issue, but I figure the 'treasure' would add a lot color.

Maybe a "Forest dragon lair,...thing..."?

Hi denniz !

I prefer the first one too, because the idea is very different and can be very nice !

Good luck !

yes, the first one's idea is more original, but I like the composition of second one :)

Thx guys.

I like the modern design also, but I just cant seem to nail a good perspective and interesting angle. Every thumbnail I do of a destroyed city with a dragons lair just looks like a 'destroyed city'. They could be anything but a 'dragons lair'.
Still pushing it tho.. I have 2 new possibles out of the thumbnail stage..

Forest Dragons lair (with guardians).. and a Shot from the dragons perspective looking out to see adventurers approaching.

I am still trying for something away from the norm.. Ill give myself 2 more days before I have to pick one and get things going.

What about the world of Thundarr the Barbarian? Furturistic, but fantasy-ish?

i think the second works better, first one, while interesting, doesn't say anything about a dragon :)

Thanks guys,

Havent posted anything new due to some client changes on another project(always fun).. I think I still have time to get something together tho.

Ill make a final decision today.

By the way, has anyone run across a tutorial that would help me paint large piles of gold coins? I am experimenting with some custom brushes, but still falling short.

I like the second sketch of your last post

wow, there are quite a few interesting idea. I prefer your forest dragon's lair in terms of your complementary colour. Perhaps you can bring in some strong foreground element to show that its viewing from inside the cave or something.

Thx guys.

OK,.. Its been awhile, but I think I finally got something going. I couldn't nail down a camera angle until I modeled a basic layout and just played with a camera.

The second pic is with the first texture pass. Still a lot of work to be done. Lava, cave, coloring, lighting, DoF work,...and so on.

Let me know what you think or if I am missing something!

Thx all.

i think if you create a rock bridge to connect the cavern and create some light rays casting on it, will create a more breathtaking feel to the landscape.

i love this idea! keep up the gd work. :)

I think the perspective of your cave entrance is slightly wrong, the line should be converging not parallel, the top end should appear wider.

Also, i think ur bridge or ur cave is facing the wrong direction.

i thought that might demonstration what I said a little better.

@ gioiwua: WTF? Spam I guess?

@miledream: Thanks for the comment. I I went back to check the perspective just to make sure. It seems correct so far. I think what is going on is the camera I am using is in the area of a 15mm lens. (A trick used a lot in opening up shots of car interior lighting.) and my camera is at an angle and to the right of the cave.I usually block out everything in 3D, as I will be projecting this back on the geo for a camera move. Not sure if this will happen for the contest, but for the near future. Hopefully, I can make the perspective feel better by the end of the contest.
Still LOTS to do. might have to pull an all nighter.

@miledream: Thanks my friend. Your C&Cs have been extremely helpful and appreciated.

FINAL

Story:
The idea is, no adventurer in their right mind would ever enter a dragon's lair through the front door,... Here is the map, although this path is still deadly in itself, at least you have a fighting chance through a secret passage. Good luck, and I hope you brought your climbing gear with you!

WIP Sheet and low res. attached:

GL all and see you in the lair...
