Gungnir is Odin's spear. Gungnir means "Swaying One". Gungnir ALWAYS hits it's mark and ALWAYS kills. I am 40 minutes into it. I still need to do a handle. I am trying to go more of an elegant spear since it is Odin's. I figure if its a God's spear then it doesnt really need to be very brutal looking. C&C please.

lol lotta views but not comments ?? :grr: anyways it looks cool right now but i would suggest u to make the blade look big or grand (in design) its ordinary right now but then u have a reason for that ??

Yea I understand about that. It does seem a little plain but I was trying to add some detail with the valknut symbols on the blade. I might try to make it serrated or something but I'm not sure.

Hello
I will post my opinion only because Krazy8 is asking, but its just my opinion and Krazy, please dont let it affect your creative process in any way. I will just say how I would approach the problem of Odins spear.

a) its spear of God
b) it never misses
c) it always kills

I am not well versed in Norse mythology, so what I write here is based ony my quick peek into wikipedia. Attributes of Odin are horse, spear, and raven. I would stick with raven as it flies and craves flesh (this it has in common with the spear). I would probably omit horse, as it may be too much for allocated time we have for modelling.

Next I would look at some nordic spears, and put the shape into consideration for making of the spear, even though it is likely most spears from that era will be melee spears used to keep enemy at distance till time came for taking the sword. I would go with broad blade, leaf shaped. It should be recognizable at first glance this is nordic/anglo-saxon spear. I would deffo avoid those back hooks you have there. Odin is God of intellect, magic and poetry. I doubt he would use spear that cant be quickly removed from the corpse without breaking its ribcage. In addition if you think of it, back hooks are used so the weapon sticks in the victim and stays there (like harpoons). Meaning the victim is not dead on the spot. Just a thought.
Anyways. Another thing I would do is make the blade, or the tip, dunno how its called, I would fashion it somehow in shape of the raven. Raven has perfectly menacing appearence to appear on blade of Odins spear. And now the final touch: raven has eyes, which should be alive on otherwise steely spear, indicating the spear itself is alive and that you cant escape it. Shape the tip as ravens head, thats what I would do.

I would also make the shaft more decorated and from one piece of wood, not three, and deffinitely not intertwined. Intertwining gives impression it is flexible, not straight (hence not accurate). Instead I would spend time on further decorating the shaft. But I would not overdo it. Its not highly decorative middle eastern spear. This is Norse spear. Decorations should go with the culture (and I would stick with stuff that wont interfere with aerodynamics of the spear). And if you really want to play with the picture later on, decorate the wooden part of the shaft with pictures of Odins deeds. Not in modelling time, just to add the touch to the beauty render with hand made texture :)

Please do not take this as criticism or guide what you should do. I just wrote what I would do if I chose to do spear of Odin. Its your spear and your imagination, and I am neither teacher nor judge. I hope something of this helps somehow. You asked for C&C and gfxengine was unhappy there are no comments...

Oh and Odin is God of intellect, like Athena. The spear should look anything but brutal. :)

I definately agree JAPO. I do thank you for your insight. I am thinking about redoing most of it to be honest. You bring very valid and good points.

The overall concept is looking really good, but (like my spear) the shaft itself is somewhat plain. Perhaps some rings or leather bands for grip may add a bit of detail to the area?

Also, further to JAPO's comments- an additional theme may help give you some more ideas. I especially like the idea of encorperating an animal like a Raven into the design (perhaps the blade could be partially shaped like a corvids wing?)

Well I was actually thinking about redoing it lol. To incorporate the more throwing style. This one isn't done though. I had not handle on it but all of the valid points kind of make it seem like a one time throwing spear/ thrusting spear lol.

Updated. I completely redid it. I have like 15min left but Idk what to do. I will post some more clays of the details on the spear head.

A big improvement in terms of looking like a real spear. Like you said- the hard part is going to be working out what to do with the remaining time!

These are lyrics to a song by Amon Amarth and I find it fitting to this spear well since they sing about it and Odin.

He hung on the windswept world tree
Whose roots no one knows
For nine whole days he hung there pierced
By Gugnir, his spear

Swimming in pain he peered into the depths
And cried out in agony
Reaching out he grasped the runes
Before falling back from the abyss

He gave himself unto himself
In a world of sheering pain
So that we all may live our lives
By the wisdom that he gained

Update. I'm not done just testing out textures and base colors.
