View Full Version : Myths and Legends - Speed Painting "The Hero" - Public Voting Open
BiG ToE-3DT
23-11-2009, 02:51 PM
Voting Time has come!
Here's how it's going to work, initially there will be a public vote to decide the top 5 places.
To qualify for voting you must have at least 50 posts to your name or be a competitor of the challenge you are voting in (must be the same stream too, so a matte painter cant vote in speed modelling for example, unless he has over 50 posts)
Please choose your top 3, your first place gets 3 points, 2nd gets 2, and 3rd gets 1. We will use these final entry threads for public voting also.
Public voting will be open for 1 week and will end on the 7th of the month at 2400 GMT.
Then the top 5 will be judged by a panel (to be announced) to decide the final places, this will happen during the second week of the month and end and winners will be announced on the 15th!
Ok people, get voting and good luck to everyone!!

1st - noundo
I love the atmosphere, I felt this one the most. The dragon slayer looks like he's been
through a long and tiring battle w/ this dragon, and he's mourning for all the people he
lost in the battle.. Though by looking at the skeletons in the background, the king and
his guards has been dead for quite a while, I'm real interested in learning the story
behind this piece.
2nd - Dalton Muniz
Really impressive, warm colors really sell the the scene. And the action lines are intact.
Though I have a hard time seeing it as a whole, I think the bright light source in the
background took over too much.
3rd - JB
Fun piece, very clean, point of interest is clear to see. The details are great.

Nice work everyone!
1)J.B. (Why are you first?)
2)Dalton_Muniz (Maybe some more details...)
3)vnmribaya (because I like da monster's concept, care girl's anatomy)
The third place is quite ex-aequo with noundo, alamear and Anders2000 because noundo's atmosphere is really awesome, alamear's work is quite genialistic, and I really appreciate the mood of Anders2000's work.
My originality prize go to Cederstorm because of da big hammer!
And tentacles!

This is some of the best I've seen in 2D on 3dtotal for a long time on the speed painting :)
Very close call here between the paintings... Good job everyone! :D
1. Dalton_Muniz (Extremely sensual girl :) Nice technique and style)
2. J.B (Very nice style, very close between you and the first. Love the idea and the overall style :) )
3. Noundo (Very nice walkthrough of your progress :). If you would have stuck with the dark colors from pic 9 you might have taken the first or second.. A bit like the Diablo 3 argument of their style ;) )

1-Alamear (Fantastic!) Beautiful composition and render. The proportions and
size relationships seem to be spot on and I see you weren't afraid to render rain
(A lot of artist aren't comfortable with this IMO).Don't know why you don't have
a TON of #1 votes (?) Nice.....Nice
2-dalton_muniz- Nice work! The entire piece is strong IMO because you spent the
time to address the spatial relationships. The only real crit I have is the lack of flushing
out the charaters (but it's a speedpaint so I really cant say that).
3-J.B.- Good illustartion...I like the characters expressions and the style of the paint.
Maybe more contrast though...deeper blacks and richer highlights.
These are my thoughts...Doesn't have to reflect on anyone else.... but I do think at times we take for granted this platform...This is the time to get your work out and have it seriously critiqued by hobbyist and professional alike. I don't see it to be any advantage to have friends vote for one another in comps (hope that's not happening)
on these forums. I know the judging is up to the viewer and that's the beauty of it, but I'm astounded that entries like Alamear (that as a speed painting could make it in any fantasy book) that dont get votes....
Just my take on it...

There were a lot of good entries like ALamear's, painting, speedpaintings, cartoons, realistic-like, comics/manga style etc...
The fact you've got a lot of different categories on this kind of contest is good, but It doesn't help for judging.
Everybody's got its own criteria and point of view when we're judging, and sometimes you want to defend something you respect in a painting that may seem completly out of sense for you but could have a great importance for another one, you're not always judging the technique. A lot of people judge the final result.
I completly agree with you that just voting for friends, not for the image, is really stupid because it kills the comp.
And I'm still waiting your gate demon from DWIV.

Hey polysmooth
Thanks for the Kind words mate and i appreciate it beleive me,but hear me out
I know what you mean about the whole vote rigging by getting friends to vote etc. If people out there need to do this to win comps then it's just a sad case that their work couldnt win on its own merot. It destroys the whole spirit of this thing all together which is to see some wicked art and have a little friendly competition together.
But I'd prefer to think that everyone here is more mature and settled in themselves and their work that they dont need to "ask" people to vote for them so they can win.
Now lets get this back to being a voting thread and see how things turn out.
good luck everyone
cheers mate
