What exactly is involved in a Speed Modeling entry? Can I texture my scene? How is "speed" a factor?

You can read the rules of the archived old SMC, it's more clearly explained.

Speed modeling is a grand total of drawing that serves as a stepping stone for your modeling (base for future 3d objects) plus all the modeling/modifying you do in order to get your idea across.

Basically you think of modeling your idea/concept or any others idea/concept and do the detailing for last, since you might end up going across your limit; time determined for speed modeling

In the new monthly competitions, beauty render is mandatory along as clay and wires, but mapping, texturing, lighting and rendering are not involved in the time of the speed modeling, since getting the idea across and swiftness is only determined by modeling factor - better machines, or workstations provide for a shorter rendering time, so that's not included in the factor

hope i answered all your questions.

Thanks, rocneasta. :)

If I choose to do the "2012" Matte Painting challenge, can my art show the aftermath? Or does it need to be more "destruction in motion"?

Since the focus is to present a vision of the Earth's final days, the second before the destruction, few minutes in the destruction or aftermath would all fit into this vision. Final days covers a big scope of motives and angles... gl which ever way you choose

Thanks, rocneasta. Not sure if I'll have the time to enter the contest. But if I'm able to put together a worthy concept/WIP in time, I might just enter. I don't want to waste anyone's time with a half-assed idea or execution.

you're not wasting your time or anyone else - we are all here to work and learn, even Sathe :p

post your WIP, get C&C that at times is priceless, and come back another day when you can upon learning on the previous knowledge and input, produce a piece of art

Thanks for your supportive words, rocneasta. I hope I can put something together. I'm a big fan of science fiction and post-apocalyptic movies, so this is definitely up my alley.
