@ eyecon & KernAttila: Same here my friends. Its a honor to compete and learn from you guys.

I am gathering reference atm. I will start doodling tomorrow afternoon. I have a surprise job interview Monday and had to get my reel in order.

Initial thoughts:

The moon colliding with the earth... (from ground perspective)
Sun flare baking everything in site. (Space view maybe?)
Zombie apocalypse!!!!
Asteroids,...seems to be done a lot tho...
Alien destruction ( 'Independence Day' on steroids )

Thinking!

@ miledream: Thanks man. I'll be pulling for you to.
@Dr.Rno: Thanks my friend, Looks like you are off to a great start on your thread.

OK, I got over my interview and now I have to wait for the outcome. It took more time than I anticipated, but I think I am in the clear. Just one quick sketch of an idea I had( its ugly, but the idea is there). "aliens". I want them to appear 'virus-like'. I'll see if I can advance the story and come up with more ideas.

Some questions I have are: Does it have to be modern day earth? What about an alien planet or a fantasy world that meets its fate?

anywho,.. more to come.

I think since its 2012, it should look like modern day... making it look too advance might just make it look off topic, well that's just my opinion though. Although I like the direction your headed here. This actually could create some awesome contrast and that would be great!

If you don't mind, what studio interviewed you? Hopefully that went well for you... working is totally different from this stuff we do for ourselves. But it also brings some bacon to the plate. :)

i agree with Eyecon about topic. I think you should stick to moder day, but if you don't wanna do some major city, like most of people, do some cool landscape(i am thinking in that direction now :) ). Btw if you do city it can be good practice for upcoming job at any studio :)

Cheers

Thanks and true. Modern seems to be the theme on this one. But I want to stay away from the cities as much as possible. heres another look. Asteroid/earth thing. Camera is on the surface of the asteroid looking down on the earth. Ill keep looking at this one for tonight and see if it interests me to take it further. It has potential I think, but will need to be expanded upon.

Hey Denniz!

Awesome start, I am really liking the first two concepts. It really looks like the ships are hammers pounding the ground. Very cool!

Looks like such a gem of a spot mate! I love the look of those big old trees running along the banks.
Great to see the bass are still in there growing big and fat!

I had the same thought when trying to come up with an idea. Cities are so cliche when it comes to destruction, but that's just because we gauge disasters by the body count. It would be cool to have someone come up with an idea that could have a Hiroshima-type feel without including civilization at all.

Hi,

I like the last concept, the asteroid foreground.... that could be a great scene.... look forward to your updates

Hey guys

Sorry I haven't been able to keep up on my thread, its been very hectic here. Moving across country in less than 3 weeks is murder ( at DreamWorks Animation in Redwood city and I am totally geeked). But I am watching everyones threads and their killer ideas.

I hope to find a way to incorporate aliens into my matte. I think this will give me a chance to introduce some color into the bleakness of a space scene. Hopefully I don't tread into the 'Scifi' realm too much.

Also, congratz to Matellis, Eyecon, Miledream, and Andreas for placing in the Matte Painting finals! Awesome works that I will be studying for a long time to come.

And if anyone has some advice about living/working in the Redwood area, I would REALLY appreciate it it!

Best,
Denniz
