Oh my! I was thinking about my next matte painting theme should be destruction, and here it comes this 2012 challenge!!
Added: 07/12/09
OK, here we go.
After much thought, I have decided to present this matte painting with a more technical challenge instead of a creative one. I wanted to to a invisible matte for this challenge and the story is pretty simple, moon breaks apart, meteor struck earth. So I keep the perspective simple and not too much fancy effects.

This is my concept, and composition, 30mins doodle in PS. Now I just need to find a plate that match the perspective. i wish I still live in Hong Kong, or New York, would be much easier to capture my own plate.

matte painter would be my ultimate goal. I just graduated not long ago, so I am happy to do anything CG related at the moment.

Yeah I understand..... I got to find a job myself too, I'd like to do cg but that's not my specialisation, I got to find a video editor job or anything in post-production....
I guess you'll find in London do you? Isn't a lot of cg companies there in London?

yes, london is where all the high end ones located, but it way too competitive, I can't even get in some of them as a runner. I guess its just supply more then demand at the moment due to the economy.

not even as a runner, damn, seriously? cuz your Dragon's Lair was really impressive, can't believe that they not takin someone as skilled as u r as a runner.... damn

skill is one thing, there are also opportunity, contact, and luck
If there is no job, there is no opportunity. People tend to hire people they know, thats contact. Plus you need to have the right skill, at the right place, at the right time, thats luck.
Junior matte painters are tend to be scouted by Lead artist or art director, and they won't pick someone that they don't know, and have no experiences. Plus I don't know anyone working in the industry, so its pretty damn tough.

Damn, yeah that's the same for post-production in general... well, we need a lot of luck in those industries....

where about are you located Dr.Rno? Are you into more editing or compositing?
Dr.Rno

In Paris..... well, I've just graduated from an audiovisual school where I specialized in editing.... and I did a few work in compositing too.... but I'm more an editor for now, cuz it's my specialisation....
But I had a not too bad knowledge on photoshop, and always been attracted to graphism, art, some like that.... then I fell in love with matte paintings a few months ago....
Now I have to learn by myself on that domain, and improve as much as I can each day to maybe one day be able to be matte painter pro.....
So more editing and a bit compositing..... Avid, FCP, After Effects.... no Maya, or 3d... damn I'd like..... I'll try...
By the way dude, if you know any post-production companies or somewhere where they take runner editors and/or compositor (compositing?), that would be nice, I'd like to do an internship in London....

you can have a go with the following studios
Cinesite
The Mill
Framestore CFC
DoubleNegative
MPC
They are the biggest post-production/production studio in london.
PS: If you really want to get into matte painting, you have to learn 3D I am afraid.

Finally i found a plate I can use. It matches the perspective and lighting situation. And its not a busy street! how rare is that!
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/1391/platehu.jpg (http://img12.imageshack.us/i/platehu.jpg/)
Here is how I breakdown this project:
background (the moon) will be matte painting, buildings at the back will be set extension base on the plate, and the foreground element will be completely CG, such as the foreground building, cars, road blocks.
I think this is roughly how live-action matte painting works.
I have three weeks to pull this off, here comes mission impossible! :D

I am afraid I can't anticipate this challenge anymore, too much work to do. But I think I will keep dabbing on it from time to time until I can finish it.
Congraz for Mattellis, Dennis and Eyecon for winning the last challenge!
