After the Smoke Clears: NeoHuman Race

Welcome to the Twenty-second Speed Sculpting Challenge. Whether you're new to sculpting, to the Threedy forums, or you're a seasoned veteran, come and join in on the Sculpting madness – there's plenty of fun and learning to be had by all!

http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww288/Freespace87/3DTotal/ssc022brief.jpg

http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww288/Freespace87/3DTotal/ssc_rules.jpg

1. The competition will run until the 31st of January 2010, 11:59 PM GMT+0 (For information about GMT click here (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/)); the time between now and then will be allocated to creating and submitting the entries, followed by several days of judging and voting for the entries – at which point the next competition should start.

2. You will be supplying your own base mesh for the competition, from which you will start sculpting. You can create your base mesh in any application ( 3dsmax, Maya, XSI, Cinema4D, Zspheres in Zbrush, etc ) using any technique, with no limits. Do not use an already made base mesh, you must build it specifically for this challenge.

3. There is a fixed time limit for your sculpting. Do not exceed the time limit, it is part of the challenge.

4. Do not add any meshes other than those sanctioned in this competition brief.

5. You will have to supply a wireframe screenshot of your base mesh/meshes along with your final entry image ( see rule 7 ).

6. No rendering, texturing, lighting or rigging – let's keep it all about the high-res sculpt! What we are looking for is the quality of the sculpt you can produce. If your entry is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable and on topic.

7. For your final entry, post a screen-grab from your software with your finished work in it, along with your screenshot of the base meshes used ( see rule 5 ). It's fine to present this stuff nicely, with nice labeling etc., but do not add any post-production to the images themselves. These images must be uploaded to our servers by using the "Manage Attachments" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external image files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

8. You can create multiple sculpts, but you can have only one final entry for each competition.

9. Do not create your own WIP thread. Simply post all WIP screen-grabs in here and your FINAL entry in the Final Submissions thread.

These rules apply to everybody taking part – there will be NO exceptions!

Subject: NeoHuman Race

A new year dawns over the Earth. The demonic invasion brought by Armageddon has taken the planet by force and has forever changed the order of things. Civilization has been utterly annihilated and what remains of humanity's great cities is now more like an alien landscape of dust, ruins and destruction.

The Demonic Overseer has moved its gaze unto other planes of existence, leaving our burnt world behind. But with the new year, after the smoke clears, comes the time of a new breed of life. A neohuman race. Our followers. Those that will become the new masters of what we left behind ( what's left of it ).

Your task is to imagine and design this new species that will become the dominant life on Earth. It can be one of the current species of our ecosystem, that has somehow adapted to the new conditions following the invasion. It can be a mutation between several species. It can be your vision of how humanity would possibly come out of Armageddon ( changes to our physiology, proportions ).

Bonus points for making an imaginative pedestal for it!

As before, there is no limit on the number of basemeshes, just on the time you spend on them and the sculpt itself.

As always, you can choose a realistic style for your sculpt, but you can also try your hand at a stylized version as well. You can do a head or a bust, but a full body sculpt is extremely recommended.

Let's try this out:
Download the free application CamStudio here (http://camstudio.org/), and record your progress on the sculpt ( set it to save about one frame per second ). You will not have to display it to the public, only to the judges in case you qualify in the top three. Of course, you don't need to complete the whole sculpt in one sitting, so just resume recording whenever you return to the sculpt ( multiple video recording files are acceptable ). Feedback on this idea is welcome!

Please read all the rules and brief carefully. If there are any further questions, ask and they shall be answered.

well if i were you.. i'd probably try and add some basic topology for the eyes and mouth area.. hold on i'll down the image and add some doodles for what i think.

ok i have added some text to where i think you should perhaps take the base mesh.. i've tried to keep it simple.. and others might have further tips that might aid you.. but hope it helps..

from what i gathered the time allowed in the limit.. is the time to spend on building the basemesh and the sculpt.. so you should include your basemesh with the rest of your work.. so if you have spent 2 hrs on a base mesh.. you only have 8 hrs left to sculpt

Here´s a WIP image of my charackter about 4h and 30 min in.

Question about Cam Studio: I´m having trouble with cam studio, I have lost two recordings due to file corruption and the program crashing when I try to save my recording. Also I cannot convert my saved files into SWF for later upload. Any thoughts, and will the lost recordings count against me in the comp?

Hi all
This will be my model.
A primitive herbivorous creature, almost totally blind. It uses all the other senses to find food and protect itself from predators. It lives on the dark woods of what use to be South America.
This is the first model i´ve made entirely in Zbrush.
15min zsphere base mesh, 45 minutes of sculpt till now.

Mastein's over 9000 again!

wasco: Cool and extremely probable idea. I'd imagine those demons had some "fun" while invading Earth. So a cross-species is a good way to go.

Neil: Don't forget to try to give it a sense of anatomy ( muscles / branches that work correctly ). It will give your sculpt a better impact.

Toxic_Boy: such an optimist sculpt for such an apocalyptic scenario :)

Dront: Sorry to hear you're having trouble recording. If the errors persist, just focus on sculpting and making the best character you can in the given time. I like how you've made it interact with the pedestal.

Hello folks.
First of all, have a great 2010 all of you!
I wish you all the best this year.

So, I liked the theme of the contest, and I'm here, after a long time without posting.

my base mesh - 15 min 3dmax
sculpting till now - 1h and 15 min.

Happy sculpting fellas, hope you enjoy my creature.

the bg story is something like....stand strong, where the weak have no chance to survive ;)

Thx for the response Freespace-3DT.

Nice to see the all the different approaches to the theme of the contest.

mastein: I really like the design of the character. He´s got a "Pan's Labyrinth" feel to him very nice.

Longhi: Nice start, looking forward to see the final result.

________________

Here is my character 9h in.

He is a human/dog and I wanted to him look like a sad dog rather than a angry demon spawn.

The story behind this creature:

He is the result of the treatment the humans enslaved by the Demons during Armageddon had to endure.
Treated like dogs and cross breed with demon spawns the human eventually turned into a form of human/canine that survives by scavenging from the dead.
Some escaped and are now walking around in the destroyed remains of our world.

ok so heres my concept and ref (not got the clothing ref yet also concept is still early wip) i wanted to go for something where the human race still looked reconginsable. what has happened is a virus infected the core of the earth which has transfromed the human brain to using 100% of its capasity which inturn has overloaded the body, making the genes work at a much larger rate making there physic deform and brains enlarge enough to crack the skull. imbedded is an insignia of the disease which is actually a control mechanism which at any point the demonic spirits can control like slaves. basically my design is based of a much more intelligent version of zombies. i no my concept looks zombie like and lifeless but im no concept artist. well hope you like it and sculpt will be up shortly :)

You can have as many meshes you want, and you can make accessories out of Zbrush and then import them to sculpt on. Most people do it this way. :)

Hi Everybody,
Here's my Base Mesh for the contest,
As i said before i'm new to this so please be nice (just kiding)
I screwed a litlle the mesh using the move tool to give the basic shape i wanted,
My creation guide line process is mostly done in this stage,
It was originasly made with ZBrush ZSpheres,
1 hour and 20 min of recorded video as asked on the item number 7,

The BG of this is:

1- Human race evolved
2- from the few survivers on the coldest areas of Earth
3- The weather was so hot, that the remaining humans had to stay
the hole day inside whater for many generations to resist to the high temperatures,
4- Humans evolved to a new Race, which can live under whater and out of it
5- Very adaptive and resistent Human, which can bread and take oxigen from the most dificult enviroments
6- among other things it developed two sensors comming fron its head,
which detects both electric signals and i is sonar

Hope you enjoy
Cheers

Are we allowed to polypaint our finished model?

For distinguishing a couple of colors from each other ( like skin/armor/blood etc... ) it's fine, but not for actual texturing. You can always continue working on your model outside of the contest, without any restrictions, once you've submitted your final entry.

Hi Freespace-3DT,
I also have two questions if you dont mind,
The first is if the pedestal for the sculpt must be included in the 10 hours?
And if can i add some acessory in the midlle of sculptibg, like if i decide to
do my creature with open mouth, can i add subtolls for the gum and teeth, which is not included in the base mesh?
Thanks and cheers
Fernando Kuhlmann

Freespace-3DT
17-01-2010, 09:32 PM
Hey Stoneking,

The pedestal is included in the 10 hours, and you should do it only when you're pleased with your sculpt. The sculpt is more important than the pedestal, but if you've got time, people will definitely love a well made pedestal ( especially when the character you sculpted interacts with it in some way ).

You can do anything you want with meshes and subtools at any time in those 10 hours.

BUT in my case i just need to wait and it will save properly,
It says it is not responding but in a wile it saves it, just whait,
AND in my case the only program that plays the movie is
Media Player Classsic-Homecinema
Hope it helps
PS And you also can play the movie you already saved,
But it will be incomplete, with less time then recorded,
Cheers

Toxic_Boy - Im really liking this man.Though I think you should explore more matcaps.I feel like this one is sort of taking away from what this sexy beast really can look like with a diff one applied to him ya know.Look GREAT so far man!
Can't wait to see the final.

mastein - Such a clean finish.Im drroooooling waiting for the presentation shots man.DROOOLING!Lol.But seriously...I did.

2 hours and 40 minutes into my sculpt. So much to be done.Such little time. Its so fun though.I will definitely be joining more of these kinds of contest here on 3d total.

Oh and theres a 3d max render in there just for the hell of it.Basically it looked cool so I put it here with the rest.

StoneKing thanks for the advice, I will try Media Player Classsic-Homecinema.

One other question I have is about the base meshes. It sais in the rules we can have as many base mashes as we want, my idea is to portray how humans would evolve after the apocolypse and I thought I would use 3 base meshes showing a family of three. Is this allowed or should I stick to one character? I'll post my concept and my 3 hour sculpt so far. The plan is to clone the base sculpt to create a man, a woman, and a child.

hello everyone,
i'm from berlin germany, new to this forum and thought i should give my self a try and participate on this challenge.
Here are the thoughts behind this sculpt:
- after the invasion some minor daemos stayed on earth to enslave humanity as their hosts.
- these daemons infested the human race to live in kind of a symbioses. the human part provides mobility and ingestion of food. the symbiont is feeding from the human and provides him with extra oxygen filtered from the long antenna like gills.
- the daemon is linked with the brain of his host to keep him under direct control.
- whithout the daemon the human race won't be able to survive in this toxic enviroment earth has become.

Even thoug this is my first sculpt ever i hope to improve my work in further challenges.

I worked with Maya and Mudbox.

total time spend: 9hours 47min

Cheers!

Hah, yeah I hear ya man, retop's not exactly high on my fun list either. My sympathies, I'll likely be doing the same soon enough.

Hope you guys don´t mind that i´m still posting here.

Of course not! Your models ownsause dude, I want to see where this goes. ;)

Edit:

Well, here's my 5th hour. I didn't do a whole lot tonight, staying up late all week is starting to catch up with me. The good news is camtasia recovered that bit of vid I thought I lost in a crash I had last night. Most of the evening I spent encoding the vids...aka watching tv ;). I've loaded a compressed version on my vimeo if anyone's interested, but be forewarned, it's the whole thing, so even at x8 speed it's still about 43 minutes.

Here's tonights stopping point. I mainly worked on the upper leg & knees and the arms.

Cheers.

Spindraft : I've watched your video, you should have paid more attention to the rules :/
It's said : "Do not use an already made base mesh, you must build it specifically for this challenge."
Well, no big deal since you have time to redo it with your own basemesh.

So, continuing off the challange...
This was the first texture test in 3dsMax with a low and a mid poly model.
Left one is 8,6k polys and right one is 38k polys.
Again, its just a test, nothing is final!

Everybody's stuff looks great!

A couple more updates from me, I might as well finish what I started. Let me know if this is too many colours please. 7.57 hours so far. Also, is posing part of the time limit?

The story is that humans have evolved to live with the conditions left behind. The air is badly poisoned and the sun rarley makes it through the haze to the earth. Our mouths have formed a natural filter over them that opens sideways to reveal our mouths. The third eye acts like night vision and UV protection at the same time (our old eyes have grown very weak and sensative to light). There are also gills behind the ears (like in the movie water world). And the ears themselves have also formed natural filters to keep out the bad air. The atmosphere is so bad, we've taken to living in the sewers.

Hello All, Great entries everyone!
Love the challenge, It was my first time recording my own work, in the beginning its was a little weird but then I didn’t even remember XD 22 Camtasia video files

Anyway regarding my Character, after the smoke clears the human body evolve in to different forms. Many races were born. But the dominant of them all, was the Wing Race. Smaller body, big Wings, Sharp Claws that can cut anything and strong legs for speed take off from land make this Race invincible

Hehe, although when I began the model I was thinking of making a comedy version of it, but different references and different mood change the whole character of my model

Finally I have submitted my entry in the final Thread but I also want to update this thread …so here you go
