This is Ecthelion of the Fountain, an elven warrior from the city of Gondolin, im modelling this guy using some sketches made ffor me by Mates Laurentiu (Avatar) > THANKS MAN!
its another neverending progress thread, so be patient...hehe

i started with a box (as usual) and builded the proxy mesh extruding and sucha and then i started building edgeloops.

hope u like it!! later on ill be posting some more background on this character.

First the sketches:

well howdy there buddy,
As usuall the modelling looks very nice and although its just the start of the model the detail is of a really nice level. Though i tkae it your going to clothe him, so is that amount of detail nececery??? Still looks like one fine model. Nice drawings aswell to the artist.:D :D :D :xyz:

rage
05-06-2003, 02:32 PM
hehe, i was asking that myself....is that much detail necesary? i think its not, since almost no skin will be visible, (it will all be leather pants and boots, and armour)...the usual way would be to model the aproximation of the character structure, and the model the clothes over it...BUT everytime i see an artist model a character that will be full clothed i see thta he doies the same thing, first they model the character fully detailed, and then they dress him, although in this char for instance i guess i overexagerated the detail on the modelling, lets see how it keeps going...

cheers and thanks for pointing that out!!! it was ciruling my head but needed somebody else to say it! :D :D

PS: what happened with your proyect my man?

wolfy
05-06-2003, 02:41 PM

rubberduck: drawing is a skill u can always learn! just start by going out with a sketchbook and copy nature! then do a drawing course of some sort (figure drawing or sumethin) and practice practice practice!!!:D :D

mac5er: hmmm well, i dont look at male asses...hehe

IDownupI: thanks my man! lately im surprised by your improvement...keep it going

Emperor: well, about the fall of Gondolin idea...well thats the whole point of all the things im doing!!!...Gothmog Lord of Balrogs and his mighty AXE, Gondolin and its fair towers and Ecthelion in shiny armour with shiny longsword and shield...hehe...it will be along run but ill make it! maybe just a couple of stills first, and who knows later!!

rage
06-06-2003, 02:13 PM
first of all, the drawing isnt mine, its form AVATAR, and second, its a stylized character, im not going for hyperrealism here my man, and third, its an elven character, so imagination is about 80 percent of the work here...hehe
well, the point is, its a stylized char, its not a hyperreal char and stuff...so real anatomy proportions are off the scope.

cheer dude!

Hey Rage, REALLY nice work. Don't worry about the amount of details, it's pays off when the clothes are flowing around the body. Mind to show us everything you've already done for this project in one large pic?

rage
09-06-2003, 03:34 PM
ill arrange all ive done in a pic as soon as i have some little time, by now u can visit the different threads about it in this forum:

Gondolin - the hidden city (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3861)

and my neverending Balrog (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41)

Wow, rage, my man! Very nice! I bearly can wait until you'll show us some of the upper body and maybe some of the "gizmo's". And I'm curios to know if you'll make a head using my drawings or you'll use the one you already have.

rage

here are some updates and some wires...enjoy!

Splurgus: thanks man!

Avatar: thank u bud! i started the upper body yesterday...it seem to go very smoothly...about the head i think ill model it with the style u sent me...im almost shure about it

Sweeet! Except... I can't really see the kneecap.
Keep up dude!

rage
10-06-2003, 01:59 PM
excuse my ignorance my man...whats the kneecap?

lillypusher
10-06-2003, 02:02 PM
the bit in front of the knee. put your hand on your knee - yes, that's right. feel that but which u can move slightly? (and don't try 2 move it not slightly) - that's the knee cap.

and that was my 60 sec contribution to the world of anatomy.

rage
10-06-2003, 02:05 PM
o i see, i knew it but doesnt knew the english word...hehe :D:D

but its there! cant u see it???:grr: :grr:

lillypusher
10-06-2003, 02:13 PM
don't look at me! it was FCR who posted the non-knee cap post! i can c it! really! i can!! look! it's right there, capping his knee!

:D

i can c it, it just seems..... not very pronounced. but it's the same as the sketches, so it must be just me. and FCR of course.

FCR
10-06-2003, 02:51 PM
No need to be annoyed. I only said that I can hardly see the kneecap, not that can't be seen. Sorry, but to me the knee area seems weired. But that could be just me. If I should be wrong about this, fine. I just try to help.

rock on rage!

only one crit: the troso (is that what it's called? above the legs, in the penis area) looks very square.

Knut
10-06-2003, 03:21 PM
maybe flat is a better word to use

rage
10-06-2003, 03:21 PM
could u paint over one of my images to show me? cause the torso is one thing and the penis area is another...hehe, so i dont know wich of the are u referring to....could u? pleeeeeeeease?:D

rage
10-06-2003, 03:22 PM
u where faster than me! hehehehe

yes its a bit flat, but thats because it where 2 am in the morning and i needed some sleep, so i threw the renders and went to bed...:D
I will work on them as soon as possible...thanks dude!

oh and one more thing, the heel sticks out too much IMHO
maybe it was intentional, i dunno:roll:

anyway, get your ass to bed:D

rage
10-06-2003, 03:26 PM
LOL FCR!

yes its intentional my firend im just following the sketch, and adding some stylish exaggeration of my own...

FCR
10-06-2003, 04:10 PM
Yes! Finally I found out what bugs me. It's the gap between kneecap and thigh musculature. I hope this picture shows you what I mean. *crossing fingers that I'm not wrong* :p

rage
10-06-2003, 04:51 PM
it looks like u are riht...ill see what i can do...but i still like it the way it is

FCR
10-06-2003, 05:07 PM
YES! WON! :p
Just in case you need a good excuse to leave it the way it is, you're modeling an elven character, not a human. Maybe their musculature is different.
Keep up this work man, I really like it. Though nitpicking is really hard on your models :D

rage
10-06-2003, 08:11 PM
OKOKOK you won my man! :D :D :D
but maybe i use the "its an elven character" excuse...;) ;)

Avatar-3DT
10-06-2003, 11:03 PM
FCR, It's always wrong to asume fiction characters have the same body structures as human do. Maybe the elfs had no bones at all, did you ever consider? They were already "living between world". Every legend and novel said that they were only resemblant to humans, not humans. You're a german, you have a lot of legends about elfs.
Rage, I like what you have done so far. Keep it so and you have the recepy of amazement at your hand. Great modeling skills you have there. I can't wait for some updates!

Well, it looks good to me. There's something wrong 'do, but I cannot pin-point it. I will expect to see the entire body but I think the lower body it's to sturdy. Looks kindda heavy. It will do great for a human, but am elf should look lighter, slimer.

rage
12-06-2003, 08:17 PM

Stylus
12-06-2003, 09:23 PM
Great so far, iv taken a real intrest into this! :D I did life drawing at college so maybe i can give you a few pointers ;)
( sorry for defacing your lovely render :P )

You have a good sense of where the muscles should be, but have defined them slightly wrong ing the folowing places...
1. just above the hip, its more of a groove, than a gentle dip as it should be, but it does depend on the belly :haha:
2. just above the knee, this contour should not curve upwards the way you have portraid it
3. as mentioned before, the calf muscles need to be flattened and extended down
4. pls pls do the feet :D i want to see what elfe feet look like, cant remember if they have shoes?, or just hairy feet !
And yes i know this is an elf, not a human and are not neccesarily
the same, but in my opinion, making it more into a human and then changing bits here and there then adding elven clothes etc, would be the route to take :) but thats just how i would do it, so just ignore silleh old me!
Keep us updated rage!!!

hehe, this is going to be a long thread, there are quite a few tolkien fans here i see :D

rage
13-06-2003, 02:06 PM
hehehe
ok, ok, ok....now you will think im a freakin tolkienite...AND I AM!!

from what i know the URUKS where an invention of Saruman the White, the Istari who fell under the shadow of evil and greed (for the ring of power). And that was at the end of the third age of middle Earth, say year 3000 of the third age (aprox), and Gondolin was destryed year 510 of the first age...and the second age lasted for about 3441 years...hehe thats makes a diference of about 6528 years between Ecthelion and the Uruk-Hai that u see in the movie...but it is told that the first Uruk-Hai were seen in the year 2475 of the Third age.

Ecthelion is the one who slew Gothmog Lord of Balrogs at the end of the first age before the war of wrath...

FCR
13-06-2003, 02:48 PM

Btw: updates?

S1DC
13-06-2003, 04:23 PM
Good work so far! Especialy from the sketch, turning out very well.

One thing i never understood, though:

Why model the entire body if your going to cover it in armor, etc etc, anyways?

Just model the parts of the body you'll see and then stick armor and whatever on. The rest seems like really fancy pointless polys.

Stylus
13-06-2003, 04:29 PM
S1DC - then it wont be an elfe then :D
dont model the body? what and miss out on a large part of the fun? not to mention experience... If your going to do something properly, then do it PROPERLY, always go the whole hog! :p
what would elron say... tsk

Avatar-3DT
13-06-2003, 10:44 PM
S1DC, think about this: what will happen to the armor and cloathes when the elf will move if there is no body to sustein them? A brute body is always needed if a character is designed to be animated. And then everybody should exercise one way or another.
rage, I starve for updates, buddy! I know you can not work that fast but I visit this thread every night hoping to see how the things are coming together.

rage

well well well....after a long one week illness, im freakin´ back, rocking and kicking!! i manage to do some more work befora and after i wen sick...so here is the freakin update dudes.
about modelling the body either way its not going to be seen, 2 reasons:

1. to properly model the clothes over the body mantaining the proportions and stuff

2. PRACTICE, as simple as that, plus, its reusable...

so, onto the images  :

note: the back of the character isn´t laboured yet

Most excellent! Another work I passed over and didn't see. I went back thru this and saw your progress on it. Even though you said that hardly any of the body detail would be seen, I'm so glad you went ahead and put time and effort into the body. If you hadn't, we would have missed out on a great piece of modeling.
And thank you very much for posting the wires. Those are a great source of info on how the legs and all are modeled. I've said before somewhere that at times, I think a well made wire is a work of art all by itself and I get as much pleasure looking at one as I do the fully rendered model.
Now, if I could get mine wires looking half as good as yours, the head and body to the man I'm working on would look a lot better.
Great work!

Sorry for not thinking my self about showing the spot where I see trouble. Here it is. It looks to me is a little too flat in that area and it could be rounder. Your last update did not corected that.
Gosh, win to lotery and stay home to work I can't bear the ideea it will be some time until you'll finish this character!

here is a little update on ecthelion body
now hge has arms! hehe yes yes yes i knoiw theyre too big...but i just put them there and welded them, now comes the tweaking part...and if u thought that those arms are quite similar to the ones on the balrog...THEY ARE THE SAME! why model new arms if u have some nice aprrximation already modeled? now comes the tweaking part...the bottom part of the has practically no detail at all...and they are some patrs that need some heavy tweaking...

...now, maybe i begin with his costume (since he is wearing some heavy armomr, his body will be not visible at all, i just did it for practice and proportions)
next is the head and stuff...

enjoy!!

Great work, Rage! :D
The wire looks like it doesn't have ANY topology problems. Really well done!

Some muscles appear a bit blocky (like the biceps) though I sometimes can't decide wether they really are blocky or is it just the shading. Anyways, it's just a matter of tweaking. :)

Once again, great work... Simply great!..

avatar: by the moment he is quite a low poly cage, but im reserving polys for the REAL detail...youll see....im counting with ecthelion being like 200-300 (thousand) polys at rendertime, and maybe more.

FCR: of course they are modelled! where is the fun if they where not?

anonuser: dunno a tut, but maybe an article would be cool

Jared: thanks man! the balrog...hmmm, thats a delicate matter...he is on the fridge right now, he will remain there untill he learns how to behave like a grownup and stop scorching my bedroom´s ceiling every time he gets pissed (and thats often)...:D :D no really, he is on ice until i finish ecthelion

lookin good rage

i dig the shin plates and how they interact with the calves

i do have two crits for ya though
-the wrinkles behind the kneeds and on the shoe area seem a bit harsh and even, i'd soften them up a bit and have those loops turn in direction a bit more. i think that'd greatly enhance the cloth feel to it.

-the thighs of the character seem a bit thin. perhaps the character is elf like with a very thing build, but if you're going for the idealized physique, ala oscars statue type proportions then i think the thighs could use some more girth.

its coming along well, looking forward to seeing more updates

26-09-2003, 05:32 AM
so all those details you spent time modeling are going to be covered by an even more detailed armor??!! humm, interesting :!!!:

___ is the character going to take off his armor at somepoint in some animation u r putting together... that would justify why even build a body mesh with all the six pack and leg muscles so defined....

___ conver to subDs then reduce some details on the body mesh (like everything)... detail that are unnecessary.

why did u not use Nurbs?? i wonder why?? humm
but the model looks OK... not too organic, too stiff looking and artificial, but kudos on the dedication
ciao
that was my meager 2 cents

JORDAN: thanks dude! about 300.000+ at rendertime with meshsmooth on 2 iterations.

vladimirjp: heya dude! i modeled the body geometry just for practice, and because its so mush easier to build the armour over the real body, not just look to some drawings.
i dont understand what u said here:
___ conver to subDs then reduce some details on the body mesh (like everything)... detail that are unnecessary. what did u mean by that??
NURBS??????? nurbs suck man, they are so inferior to subdiv (at least for me) i find it much easier to do the localized detail in subd than in nurbs....thgough nurbs has some good sides too...
...do u think that it dosnt loook organic??? explain why dude...please! cheers!! :D

sup r

i like what you've done in this update man. i like how you've massaged the cloth around the back of the knees and on the boots. they feel much more natural now. good job there.

the one crit i have though is in its proportions so far. i guess in that render you posted from the pelvis down the character feels very light, thin legs, i guess elfish. but the chest plate seems to overemphasize the broadness and size of his torso. its a stylistic non technical suggestion (read ignore if you want to ;) ) but i'd say unify the feel of the character, is he big and strong, is he light and fast? i think it will really pull the image together and solidify it if you stylistically match the two components in terms of its proportions.

looking forward to more updates. good work so far :).

Avatar-3DT

When I made the character I was thinking than, being a swordsman and not an archer, the plate must be heavier, thougher, to endure much more "fire" than a leather armor of an archer. Ofcourse, we can debate the craftmanship of the elves in making lite armors and weapons, or about they fighting skills that cut the need of a heavy armor. After all it is rage's decision. He has my full "bless";) to modify the armor as he believe to fit the character. If he needs it I will make a liter armor for the character. So, rage buddy, if you need me, just give me a howl:)

- couple of wrinkles done to the pants, not much and no happy with them, needs lotsa tweaking dunno if they will go on the final model cause they wont be visible, and theyre eating precious memory and viewport redraw capabilities.

- inner belts almost done (a pair of belst on the side are missing, next thing to do

- bottom part armour (i call them "ass-cover") nearly finished, a bit of tweaking is needed...and the openings and secure belt (how do u think he puts that thing on?) are also missing

THE MAN IS BACK!!! And with updates nonetheless! Great to see you again my friend!
As for the updates, there are some small crits:
the forearm need work (but its obviouse that you are already doing that); the legs seem to be too long but I thing that is only because the thigh are too thin. Try to give more volume to the thigh, work on that croch and everything will be ok.
That's it, nothing for now. I'm very happy to see you back and I hope you'll be around for a long time feeding us updates!

Very Very nice, but I would have to say the butt is bothering me. And from the back the armor looks a little plain compared to the front............there is no real definition. Course i don't know if you havn't touched that yet or what.

Welcome back it's been a while since this graet post didi'nt pop up!!!It's great to see you back !!!I love the modeling the mesh is pretty clear !!
Just one or tow thing thou ,the butt deems a bit to flat to my opinion and just an ethic question about the pointy part of the front armor seems bizzare to me...

Anyway greatr work hope we'll get quick updates !

its good to be back again!

most of tha parts that have no definition will be covered in cloth or armour (like the back of the armour or the ******, or the forearm....AVAVTAR my man....you are the designer of this, u should know better!!! hehehe :p

and about the pointy part pf the armour...i think its rather cool, i like it, but thanks for pointing that out

well guys see ya in the next update!

That is some amazing work Rage.

If you get the chance could you tell me how you modeled all those details in the armour and shin guards?

I was wondering if the detail on the armour was actually built off the exsisting polys, Or were they made seperate and then attached to the mesh.

Im still new to 3D, So I would think if they were built from the exsisting mesh, that meshsmooth would mess it up real bad.

Other than that.
Keep up the fabulous work.

Looking forward to seeing him complete.

really awesome I love your model (and the novels of tolkin, too ;) )
but there are some strange artefacts underneath the chest
(could be a strange shadow or gi artefact...) I marked them in the atached picture, I hope you don´t mind that I have painted on your picture so cruel...
Are these things (don´t know the right words :grr: )
before his little Ecthelion made of metal or leather?
If it is made of metal he could get serious trouble if he want to waive something from the ground.

i just realized that mysteriously my "scenes" directory and my "plugins" directory dissapeared, along with all the files from ecthelion, the balrog and ****, some of them i can recover from a backup (like the balrog) but some of them are missing for good, like ecthelion, my beloved superproyect.
Im pissed of like ****, so please i would thank some encouraging and backtapping.

WTF??? You lost all that stuff? That is total ******** man. Erm here's a thought. Get a piece of software called "get data back" for you system and run a search on your hardrive. Once I lost Lizabell because I accidentally formatted my harddrive. Anyhow this found it. There are other pieces of software that do the same job. Have a look here for a start:

http://www.tucows.com/filerecovery95_default.html

It may cost you a bit to do it, but probably well worth it ;)
Otherwise, I guess you'll have to start a new pet project.

MonteCristo

Maybe use the Freeware software called:

"Deleted File Analysis Utility 2.5"

This will list all of the recoverable items. That way you can see if it's possible, without financial risk. If you see your project there, then you can get some recovery stuff. Not bad eh??? :D

PhantomOokami

DUDE! Thanks Monte. Does it work for full recovery? My dad would love this...so would I XD

MonteCristo
10-09-2004, 05:06 AM
Ok, invariably you WILL lose some stuff.... Here's my limited understanding of how it works (I will use a Harry Potter style of description to fill in all of the blanks I don't know):

1. Hard-disks are made of lots of little pieces of magic. ;) :p When a piece of data is written, a lock-spell is put on that piece of magic to stop it being overwritten by other magic, good or evil.

2.Whenever you delete something the lock-spell is banished, and your computer now knows it can over-write the magic.

3. Essentially, the data is still there. A file is made up of lot's of pieces of magic. Imagine for example a Bitmap, let's say it's made of 2000 bits of magic... Ok, you delete the Bitmap, and download a smaller one, it may only be 20 bits of magic, but because it has overwritten some of the disk where the deleted bitmap was stored, only 1980 bits of that bitmap remain.

4. In some cases, this may mean a file is unusable, in others it may be partially complete, maybe a bit corrupt. This may often be better than nothing. When it comes to Max though, you want an untouched file probably. If like me you save all files incrementally and many many times, you will probably be able to return something. :D

how about,

A disk drive is like a very smart little squirrel. If you give him a bag of acorns (a bitmap or any other file) he takes all the individual acorns(individual bits of data) and hides them in the nooks of his favourite trees all through the forest (foresst=disc drive). The little squirrel is very smart so he always remembers where he hid each acorn and what was unique about it and what order they go back in the bag. He also runs around constantly to make sure no other squirrel is stealing the acorns. If someone knocks the squirrel on the head hard enough (disk error, or corrupt/deleted file) he'll forget where he hid all of the acorns or maybe just what order they go back in the bag, but all of the acorns are still in trees if you want to go looking for them and know his hiding spots. Those acorns will still be there unless another squirrel has come along and stolen them or replaced the acorns with his(the other squrrel's) walnuts.

AHHH HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAA! Yeeeeesssss the squirrel method; a most prestigious school of thinking. Very difficult to grasp for the novice though.

now that i see the 4 images in a single page i think i will redo the gauntlets, they look too small and there is something definately wrong with the thumb (and i also watched the WarcraftIII cinematic of evil prince arthas in full armor for the 1257653th time and loved those giant looking gauntlets, though my new ones wont be that large)

yes, the arms may be too big also, but its the whole point, a skinny looking character with the waist of a girl but huge back and muscled arms, im starting the gauntlets from scratch, the ones he has now are reused hands with a push modifier hehe, now im building them from scratch. thanks for the input dude!

hehe, good to see ya dude! happy u dropped by to see how ur little artwork takes a step into the third dimension.

here is a final update on the gauntlet. Modeled the seams and simplified the wrinkles a bit, i know that the seam is wrong on the thumb, but then again....whos watching??.

Now ill start with the dudes head modelling, here is the concept art also from Mates (AVATAR) with a few corrections to make the proportions fit on both views, hope u dont mind dude.

honestly, compared to the rest of the model the gloves are whack!
no doubt the modelling is good... but IMO they dont suit the rest of the model, they lack feeling... they are too static.
i know they are only hands but give them some soul man!

Avatar-3DT
08-07-2005, 02:31 AM
Well, personally I can understand both rage and you, skripturez... Ido hope what misses now on the glove will be completed later with good texturing, awsome shaders, illumination and a perfect bump map. Maybe, after you finish the basic modeling, you will pass it through Zbrush for detailing, rage. Ad ofcourse you can modify the concept as you need; I'm just anxiouse to see the results ;)

rage
08-07-2005, 06:31 AM
yes, they are just leather gloves skripturez hehe, and they look static cause they´re in a totally extended neutral pose, showing no spirit or character... and of course they will look a lot better with the leather texture, if not, maybe ill re-model them, cant get wnough practice of this project  .

thanks avatar for the encouraging! and about z-brush, never tried that app, maybe its time for giving it a chance...well see.

I started the head today, still a bit rough for showing it here in the forums, maybe ill post something tomorrow...

Here is what I think skripturez meant by "personality": a bit of nuckles, a bit of tendons. I would sugest a very detailed leather glove (complex model with some bump) but its up to you.

okey i know what he meant but these are gloves, not hands, all that detailing disapperas behind a thick layer of leather, thats why they look so simple, its just leather, i hope that when i texture them they will look a lot better.
