View Full Version : Character: Ecthelion of The Fountain
This is Ecthelion of the Fountain, an elven warrior from the city of Gondolin, im modelling this guy using some sketches made ffor me by Mates Laurentiu (Avatar) > THANKS MAN!
its another neverending progress thread, so be patient...hehe
i started with a box (as usual) and builded the proxy mesh extruding and sucha and then i started building edgeloops.
hope u like it!! later on ill be posting some more background on this character.
First the sketches:
and the char as it is now (wires for the next time):
05-06-2003, 02:09 PM
well howdy there buddy,
As usuall the modelling looks very nice and although its just the start of the model the detail is of a really nice level. Though i tkae it your going to clothe him, so is that amount of detail nececery??? Still looks like one fine model. Nice drawings aswell to the artist.:D :D :D :xyz:
hehe, i was asking that myself....is that much detail necesary? i think its not, since almost no skin will be visible, (it will all be leather pants and boots, and armour)...the usual way would be to model the aproximation of the character structure, and the model the clothes over it...BUT everytime i see an artist model a character that will be full clothed i see thta he doies the same thing, first they model the character fully detailed, and then they dress him, although in this char for instance i guess i overexagerated the detail on the modelling, lets see how it keeps going...
cheers and thanks for pointing that out!!! it was ciruling my head but needed somebody else to say it! :D :D
PS: what happened with your proyect my man?
05-06-2003, 02:41 PM
i havent had hardley any time to work on my projects, but as ive said before they are just on hold at the moment.
As for the model bud just keep going with it that way if need be you get 2 models. Keep it up dude:D :D :D :xyz:
06-06-2003, 03:27 AM
Looking good there:) Nice modeling
I wish I could draw as good as him, nice.
06-06-2003, 11:14 AM
hey very tiny ass nice !!:D
06-06-2003, 12:36 PM
=) not you again.. hehe
This lookes like a heavy work.. But i think you can make it through
06-06-2003, 01:24 PM
Hmmm...Gothmog...Gondolin...Echtalion...Rage..are you plnning on doing the mighty battle at the "Fall of Gondolin!?!:D
Badass scetches...he looks as mighty as I imaniged him :D!
thanks to all of u buds!
rubberduck: drawing is a skill u can always learn! just start by going out with a sketchbook and copy nature! then do a drawing course of some sort (figure drawing or sumethin) and practice practice practice!!!:D :D
mac5er: hmmm well, i dont look at male asses...hehe
IDownupI: thanks my man! lately im surprised by your improvement...keep it going
Emperor: well, about the fall of Gondolin idea...well thats the whole point of all the things im doing!!!...Gothmog Lord of Balrogs and his mighty AXE, Gondolin and its fair towers and Ecthelion in shiny armour with shiny longsword and shield...hehe...it will be along run but ill make it! maybe just a couple of stills first, and who knows later!!
06-06-2003, 02:06 PM
You should at them before you draw them
you wouldnt find anyone with such a tiny ass.
maybe prince/ tafkap / tafkatafkap
te artist formally known as the artist formally known as prince
first of all, the drawing isnt mine, its form AVATAR, and second, its a stylized character, im not going for hyperrealism here my man, and third, its an elven character, so imagination is about 80 percent of the work here...hehe
well, the point is, its a stylized char, its not a hyperreal char and stuff...so real anatomy proportions are off the scope.
here are some updates and the wires...
09-06-2003, 01:15 PM
That's some really nice muscle definition Rage. Keep going like this and you will have a scorcher. :)
09-06-2003, 01:16 PM
hmmmm. one leg to kick them all?
corny, yes. but what the hey.
09-06-2003, 01:23 PM
lillypusher LOOOOOL :D :D :D
Hey Rage... you gave up with Balrog? :( Not good at all :(
Finish him man! :(
Vanamet: The Balrog as i said in other posts is on ice but dont forget that all these things im doing (Ecthelion, Gothmog (The Balrog Lord) and the City of Gondolin are part of the same proyect....hehe
Im focusing my efforts on this new char now...
lillypusher: LOL MAN! yes one leg to kick them all in the arse
MonteCristo-3DT: thanks myman, im trying to respect the sketches done by Avatar my man....maybe my char and your could have an affaire later when its done...hehe;)
Hey Rage, REALLY nice work. Don't worry about the amount of details, it's pays off when the clothes are flowing around the body. Mind to show us everything you've already done for this project in one large pic?
ill arrange all ive done in a pic as soon as i have some little time, by now u can visit the different threads about it in this forum:
Gondolin - the hidden city (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3861)
and my neverending Balrog (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41)
09-06-2003, 04:43 PM
Very nice work. If you carry on with the rest the way you did the leg this will turn out very fine indeed!
09-06-2003, 09:45 PM
Wow, rage, my man! Very nice! I bearly can wait until you'll show us some of the upper body and maybe some of the "gizmo's". And I'm curios to know if you'll make a head using my drawings or you'll use the one you already have.
here are some updates and some wires...enjoy!
Splurgus: thanks man!
Avatar: thank u bud! i started the upper body yesterday...it seem to go very smoothly...about the head i think ill model it with the style u sent me...im almost shure about it
well onto the images:
Sweeet! Except... I can't really see the kneecap.
Keep up dude!
excuse my ignorance my man...whats the kneecap?
10-06-2003, 02:02 PM
the bit in front of the knee. put your hand on your knee - yes, that's right. feel that but which u can move slightly? (and don't try 2 move it not slightly) - that's the knee cap.
and that was my 60 sec contribution to the world of anatomy.
o i see, i knew it but doesnt knew the english word...hehe :D:D
but its there! cant u see it???:grr: :grr:
10-06-2003, 02:13 PM
don't look at me! it was FCR who posted the non-knee cap post! i can c it! really! i can!! look! it's right there, capping his knee!
i can c it, it just seems..... not very pronounced. but it's the same as the sketches, so it must be just me. and FCR of course.
No need to be annoyed. I only said that I can hardly see the kneecap, not that can't be seen. Sorry, but to me the knee area seems weired. But that could be just me. If I should be wrong about this, fine. I just try to help.
hehehehehe...*slaps hardly on its own face* i guess i need another coffe...sorry lillypusher...hehe
c┤mon FCR !! of course u only want to help! and every comment counts my man! every tiny bit of feedback is hugely helpful! thanks my man! and sorry if i sounded harsh....no hard feelings dude!!!:D :D
hehe KIT, you are the man!
rock on rage!
only one crit: the troso (is that what it's called? above the legs, in the penis area) looks very square.
maybe flat is a better word to use
could u paint over one of my images to show me? cause the torso is one thing and the penis area is another...hehe, so i dont know wich of the are u referring to....could u? pleeeeeeeease?:D
u where faster than me! hehehehe
yes its a bit flat, but thats because it where 2 am in the morning and i needed some sleep, so i threw the renders and went to bed...:D
I will work on them as soon as possible...thanks dude!
Would please anyone else say something about this knees? I'm dying to know if I'm right about this.
They're wrong, I'm right, you lose! :D :p :p :D
no problemo dude.
oh and one more thing, the heel sticks out too much IMHO
maybe it was intentional, i dunno:roll:
anyway, get your ass to bed:D
yes its intentional my firend im just following the sketch, and adding some stylish exaggeration of my own...
Yes! Finally I found out what bugs me. It's the gap between kneecap and thigh musculature. I hope this picture shows you what I mean. *crossing fingers that I'm not wrong* :p
it looks like u are riht...ill see what i can do...but i still like it the way it is
YES! WON! :p
Just in case you need a good excuse to leave it the way it is, you're modeling an elven character, not a human. Maybe their musculature is different.
Keep up this work man, I really like it. Though nitpicking is really hard on your models :D
OKOKOK you won my man! :D :D :D
but maybe i use the "its an elven character" excuse...;) ;)
10-06-2003, 11:03 PM
FCR, It's always wrong to asume fiction characters have the same body structures as human do. Maybe the elfs had no bones at all, did you ever consider? They were already "living between world". Every legend and novel said that they were only resemblant to humans, not humans. You're a german, you have a lot of legends about elfs.
Rage, I like what you have done so far. Keep it so and you have the recepy of amazement at your hand. Great modeling skills you have there. I can't wait for some updates!
thanks avatar my friend for the compliments!! lets see how it evolves tonight...
Hehe, I could discuss for ever about this, but this is a 3d thread and not an elf discussion board.
This whole discussion was mainly out of fun, sorry if it evolved into the wrong direction. Unfortunately for me both of you are beyond my skills. So ROCK ON!
11-06-2003, 01:47 PM
hey rage,.. great work tehre on your elf so far,, doing awesome stuff with the lower body
hope you dont mind i'm saving the front and back view cause its soo cool.. that friend of yours is an awesome artist
keep up the good work buddy :)
FCR: yes we could discuss it forever...but i got your commenst into account...thanks dude!
TyKeil: Thanks for the compliments man! and that friend of mine is avatar and he is showcasing a lot of artwork on this (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6670) thread! enjoy! its a must see!
well a new day, some new udates, this time its his butt, now a comment to myself... is the butt too high? i mean should i lower the buttcheeks a bit or is it fine? lemme know what u think!!!
12-06-2003, 01:00 PM
Oh my, what a cute butt..err I meant the modeling of course...
...errr..khmmm.... what was the question? LOL :D
wow! that was fast!
the question was if the buttcheeks are too high....
12-06-2003, 01:05 PM
Lol, looks like we're browsing in the same time.
They seem ok to me.
holy crap! that was fast again!! oki
butcheeks too high:0
12-06-2003, 01:09 PM
No problem, always glad to help :D
Fast as lightning Vanamet
12-06-2003, 01:20 PM
it looks very good so far. I think the calf's are too big, or?
I'd say they are too high.
12-06-2003, 04:42 PM
very good work Rage :D
keep it up
and i hope it won't turn to another never ending thread:cool:
j0haan: thanks mate...but refresh my anatomy english...WTF where the calfs?? hehe
FCR: 1 - 1
nadeemmar: thanks my man, thats a compliment....and i hope that also!
THANKS TO ALL OF U!
12-06-2003, 08:11 PM
Well, it looks good to me. There's something wrong 'do, but I cannot pin-point it. I will expect to see the entire body but I think the lower body it's to sturdy. Looks kindda heavy. It will do great for a human, but am elf should look lighter, slimer.
meybe u are roght my man, ┤cause i have made it a bit more wider than in your sketches...ill see what i can do...
i was afraid of this also....hehe
12-06-2003, 09:23 PM
Great so far, iv taken a real intrest into this! :D I did life drawing at college so maybe i can give you a few pointers ;)
( sorry for defacing your lovely render :P )
You have a good sense of where the muscles should be, but have defined them slightly wrong ing the folowing places...
1. just above the hip, its more of a groove, than a gentle dip as it should be, but it does depend on the belly :haha:
2. just above the knee, this contour should not curve upwards the way you have portraid it
3. as mentioned before, the calf muscles need to be flattened and extended down
4. pls pls do the feet :D i want to see what elfe feet look like, cant remember if they have shoes?, or just hairy feet !
And yes i know this is an elf, not a human and are not neccesarily
the same, but in my opinion, making it more into a human and then changing bits here and there then adding elven clothes etc, would be the route to take :) but thats just how i would do it, so just ignore silleh old me!
Keep us updated rage!!!
12-06-2003, 10:26 PM
Don't worry "rage", I'm sure you're gonne make it right. just keep working my man, the seat is boiling under me. It seems that it will be too long until I can see the entire scene (aldo I already imagined it).
12-06-2003, 10:33 PM
I have hopes off a scene with your character shooting some urakhai with his elven bow ! :D we know you can do it rage !
12-06-2003, 10:34 PM
hehe, this is going to be a long thread, there are quite a few tolkien fans here i see :D
ok, ok, ok....now you will think im a freakin tolkienite...AND I AM!!
from what i know the URUKS where an invention of Saruman the White, the Istari who fell under the shadow of evil and greed (for the ring of power). And that was at the end of the third age of middle Earth, say year 3000 of the third age (aprox), and Gondolin was destryed year 510 of the first age...and the second age lasted for about 3441 years...hehe thats makes a diference of about 6528 years between Ecthelion and the Uruk-Hai that u see in the movie...but it is told that the first Uruk-Hai were seen in the year 2475 of the Third age.
Ecthelion is the one who slew Gothmog Lord of Balrogs at the end of the first age before the war of wrath...
13-06-2003, 02:20 PM
Excuse me while i read the appendices of all my tolkien books...
Whew, great background knowledge bud! Now don't say you're goin' to animate the fight Ecthelion vs. Gothmog Lord of Balrogs! If you should manage to do this really good, I would pay you for seeing it.
Good work so far! Especialy from the sketch, turning out very well.
One thing i never understood, though:
Why model the entire body if your going to cover it in armor, etc etc, anyways?
Just model the parts of the body you'll see and then stick armor and whatever on. The rest seems like really fancy pointless polys.
13-06-2003, 04:29 PM
S1DC - then it wont be an elfe then :D
dont model the body? what and miss out on a large part of the fun? not to mention experience... If your going to do something properly, then do it PROPERLY, always go the whole hog! :p
what would elron say... tsk
13-06-2003, 06:35 PM
oi rage, very good one
with good textures it will looks just great, keep it going man, i hope to see more. :D
13-06-2003, 10:44 PM
S1DC, think about this: what will happen to the armor and cloathes when the elf will move if there is no body to sustein them? A brute body is always needed if a character is designed to be animated. And then everybody should exercise one way or another.
rage, I starve for updates, buddy! I know you can not work that fast but I visit this thread every night hoping to see how the things are coming together.
well well well....after a long one week illness, im freakin┤ back, rocking and kicking!! i manage to do some more work befora and after i wen sick...so here is the freakin update dudes.
about modelling the body either way its not going to be seen, 2 reasons:
1. to properly model the clothes over the body mantaining the proportions and stuff
2. PRACTICE, as simple as that, plus, its reusable...
so, onto the images  :
note: the back of the character isn┤t laboured yet
24-06-2003, 02:50 PM
hehe i think his but cheeks are saggy =P
:D :D :D :D
well, i may ask my girlfriend to see if she find them attractive, i think they are ok....dunno...anywone thinks the same as TyKeil???
hey, Actually rage I agree a little bit with him but the reason i think so is that the inner butcheeks need to be pulled out a little bit. That might get rid of the saggyness.
...anywone thinks the same as TyKeil???
Yes, actuall I was thinking the same...
Everything except this look good
ok, ill handle all that
ill see what i can dio for the next update (past tomorrow)
thanks for all the comments guys!!! cheers!!
24-06-2003, 09:55 PM
Most excellent! Another work I passed over and didn't see. I went back thru this and saw your progress on it. Even though you said that hardly any of the body detail would be seen, I'm so glad you went ahead and put time and effort into the body. If you hadn't, we would have missed out on a great piece of modeling.
And thank you very much for posting the wires. Those are a great source of info on how the legs and all are modeled. I've said before somewhere that at times, I think a well made wire is a work of art all by itself and I get as much pleasure looking at one as I do the fully rendered model.
Now, if I could get mine wires looking half as good as yours, the head and body to the man I'm working on would look a lot better.
24-06-2003, 10:12 PM
Rage, you're back on duty! Happy to know that. Your character is looking great; I don't know about his butt. My problem is with those oblics (side muscles, near the abs). They need to be rounder. And much smaller.
25-06-2003, 08:57 PM
Hey great model you've got there rage i wish i could model like you. Do you happen to know any good tut's out there on the net for box modelling?
Great work man Keep them coming.
Rc2000: thanks a lot dude! im glad u like my wires!
Avatar: hey bud! i didnt tweaked the oblics (┐?) yet, but i will...thanks!
Doperman: thanks man. If u want some good models, then PRACTICE!! hehe cheers man and thanks.
Only a bit less than an hour yesterday..,:grr: :grr: so i only tweaked here and there and starteted the back muscles hammering...only the aproximate cause next setp is the copmpletion of the torso, further muscle detailing will be done once the torso is done...hehe, not much but, well, bear with me...
26-06-2003, 02:01 PM
Okay, I'll admit it---
I'm a -----------------
I'M A WIREFRAME JUNKY!
I feel so much better now that I have that out in the open. :D
if u want i can send u my wireframe collection ( a collection of awesome wireframe i collected during time on the internet), believe me, it helped me a lot!
26-06-2003, 02:14 PM
LOL Thanks, but I might O.D. on all those and have to join the W.A. -- Wireframes Anonymous. (grin)
But the wires posted here are excellent and I'm working on a small collection of these.
ok! as u say bud!
26-06-2003, 09:44 PM
I would like some more wireframes :) I collector of wireframes myself and you are right.. they really do help. I've learn almost everything about modeling jsut by looking at the wireframes. oh and good work rage. Keep the bad ass models coming.
Hey rage, ok now just to make the but look a little more manly instead of all round like that, you need to tuck the side where the thigh and butcheek meet, look at the picture i put on for you
yes rych i kow what u mean, ill attend it on the next update...thanks!
and morgoth u will got your wireframes
here is a bit of update....enjoy and critique please!!!:D :D
28-06-2003, 11:05 PM
Its coming along nicely. He's still to bulky around but I think you will take care of that. Keep us updated my friend!
thanks bud! but, could u point the bulky parts to me please? just draw over my rendering, please!:D :D :D
30-06-2003, 04:27 PM
exelent work man, i wish i could do that :(
Toys erotic (http://www.****tube.com/categories/1093/erotic/videos/1)
30-06-2003, 04:43 PM
keep up ur work man, looks very good..
because of some server problemsi cant upload the wires, besides its too big for emailing, as soon as i have them online i let u know in this thread. and im not working of this but i will soon..hehe
Gl2eEn: THANKS DUDE!
30-06-2003, 08:01 PM
Sorry for not thinking my self about showing the spot where I see trouble. Here it is. It looks to me is a little too flat in that area and it could be rounder. Your last update did not corected that.
Gosh, win to lotery and stay home to work I can't bear the ideea it will be some time until you'll finish this character!
yes! i knew of those areas, they┤re having some really heavy problems...hehe, ill attend them as soon as i can...
30-06-2003, 09:38 PM
Really nice work, nice detailed muscles:)
here is a little update on ecthelion body
now hge has arms! hehe yes yes yes i knoiw theyre too big...but i just put them there and welded them, now comes the tweaking part...and if u thought that those arms are quite similar to the ones on the balrog...THEY ARE THE SAME! why model new arms if u have some nice aprrximation already modeled? now comes the tweaking part...the bottom part of the has practically no detail at all...and they are some patrs that need some heavy tweaking...
...now, maybe i begin with his costume (since he is wearing some heavy armomr, his body will be not visible at all, i just did it for practice and proportions)
next is the head and stuff...
19-08-2003, 08:53 PM
Great work, Rage! :D
The wire looks like it doesn't have ANY topology problems. Really well done!
Some muscles appear a bit blocky (like the biceps) though I sometimes can't decide wether they really are blocky or is it just the shading. Anyways, it's just a matter of tweaking. :)
Once again, great work... Simply great!..
19-08-2003, 11:14 PM
Youpeee!!! Rage is back. With updates!
Nice work budy, but the back looks a little too flat. But I think you'll take care of that after you finish all the character. Glad to have you back again;)
19-08-2003, 11:51 PM
here is a little update on the armour thing
avatar and insect666 ill take care of the blockiness/flatness as soon as i come to that part in armour building.
anouser: thanks dude! :P
20-08-2003, 08:49 PM
Sweet dude! Your such a poly keeper. Aldo it looks great your poly count must be reasonably low. Great work.
Wicked. Those details modelled! Wondering, what it will look like textured, with bumps.
hmm... maybe I should work on my leg again. Just to see if I can come almost close to you.
20-08-2003, 09:20 PM
Rage, you should write a tutorial on how you character model, i would love to see a detailed artical on your process!
20-08-2003, 11:01 PM
Hey rage, nice model dude.
I'd say you're coming along great.
Say, whatever happened to your balrog?
Did you finish it or what?
If so, i would like to see.
Coming along good my man. nice start with the detail in the armor. keep it up bro! can't wait to see more.
avatar: by the moment he is quite a low poly cage, but im reserving polys for the REAL detail...youll see....im counting with ecthelion being like 200-300 (thousand) polys at rendertime, and maybe more.
FCR: of course they are modelled! where is the fun if they where not?
anonuser: dunno a tut, but maybe an article would be cool
Jared: thanks man! the balrog...hmmm, thats a delicate matter...he is on the fridge right now, he will remain there untill he learns how to behave like a grownup and stop scorching my bedroom┤s ceiling every time he gets pissed (and thats often)...:D :D no really, he is on ice until i finish ecthelion
Goat: nice to see ya man! thanks bro!
thanks to ya all!
21-08-2003, 11:10 PM
Lol my man! What better place to a Balrog if not in ice!:D
hy there buds!
youre right Avatar!!
here is some little update, wrinkles are not entirely done yet and the folding parts needs some furtther detailing ("wrinkling")...
so enjoy dudes! as ujsaul a wire is thre too.
25-08-2003, 08:43 PM
Looks good and, put in perspective, is really beautifull. I would give you a advice if you're kind to bear with me: make the front part of the boots longer and pointier, even a little thinner to give the impresion of "easy boots".
25-08-2003, 09:06 PM
Awesome, but his feet look small..
hey Avatar buddy, i already tried that but the feet looked too big, ill se what i can do in between...tHANKS!
anonuser: i know it looks like if the feet where small, but they are ok, trust me...either way i guss i will try a bit what avatar said, that way they will look a bit bigger!
hey peeps, another update and done with the boots
now onto his pants and the bracers that fasten the protections to the leg...
26-08-2003, 05:57 AM
Nice work Rage:)
the wrinkles on the leg are ready (at least from the bottom to the knee) only thing is symetry correction (the wrinkles are the same on both legs) ill attend to that once i weld the whole thing together.
26-08-2003, 05:53 PM
very nice, shouldn't he have a head soon? :D
26-08-2003, 05:54 PM
now that is awesome.... if i was working with that many poly's .... it would be like... mesh prob galore.... very very nice :)
26-08-2003, 07:25 PM
Great attension to detail. Like the way the strapes indent the pants.
26-08-2003, 08:06 PM
I cant wait to see it textured!
26-08-2003, 11:41 PM
Let me tell you this: WOW!!! Man, you are really great! If you want to add some more detail you could make a small ridge on the bottom of the folded part of the boot. In rest, nothing to crit, its too perfect!
scott99 and DanielB, THANKS!!
RickStefani: thanks dude! i think i may make them a biut less hard'edged, dont you think?
anonuser: thanks m8, me neither!!:D :D
Avatar: thanks a lot bud...and remember, its your concept man! the ridges are a good idea dude. Thanks!
thanks to ya all, there will be more for ya tomorrow!!
27-08-2003, 08:46 AM
lookin good rage
i dig the shin plates and how they interact with the calves
i do have two crits for ya though
-the wrinkles behind the kneeds and on the shoe area seem a bit harsh and even, i'd soften them up a bit and have those loops turn in direction a bit more. i think that'd greatly enhance the cloth feel to it.
-the thighs of the character seem a bit thin. perhaps the character is elf like with a very thing build, but if you're going for the idealized physique, ala oscars statue type proportions then i think the thighs could use some more girth.
its coming along well, looking forward to seeing more updates
27-08-2003, 09:14 AM
I go away for a couple of days, and being taht i get slack from time to time and dont check out the updates, and i come back to this. Its truely awsome buddy, I just love the shin plates. It seems that you have made all the right cuts in all the right places. It looks very nice indeed dude. Looking forward to an update on this one.
SO has weta called you yet??????
:D :D :D :xyz:
kuman the man himself! thanks dude! i always found it very dificult to model the way u do the clothes...using the flow instead of perfect edgeloops...im a "quad-no poles-edgelooper" heheh, either way, ill see what i can do, and the pants are made of "spandex-leather" wich is hard and very tight...hehe...thanks dude!
Wolfy my buddy! how is it going bud! thanks a lot dude, and no, they didnt call...hehe
27-08-2003, 01:26 PM
I cant believe they havent phoned yet seeing as they only have a little time left to finish return of the king....
Im good thank buddy, just been a little slack of late with the show reel work, must get on top of it all.
I really cant wait to see an update of this thread bud. Keep it up.
:D :D :D :xyz:
27-08-2003, 03:08 PM
for some reason those shoes look dumb..
i dont know why.. mabe they dont "flow "properly or soemthing"
i just have this severed feelign when i look at them
TyKeiL: dumb? have u seen the conecpt art at page 1? i think that these shoes resemble a lot the ones on the concept, and they are not looking dumb, bah, at least they are not looking dumb fo me...anyone thinks the same as my man here? thanks for pointing that
wolfy: LOL my man! good luck on your reel dude.
Lookin great Rage. Awsome details.
29-08-2003, 12:32 AM
Very nice details there, the modelling is brill. I really anticipate the texturing dude.
GOJ: thanks bud, ill apreciate that
JOSHnigga: thanks a lot dude! i also anticipate the texturing part...hehe...its going to be a pian in the arse!!! :P
here is a lil update
i started the chest armour yestertday, its been quite a pain although it looks quite simple...
...im not quite happey with the leafs, and the lil things on the bottom look like they are floating on the armour but believe me, they are not
still a lot to do though, so check it out and send me some comments!!
and the last one...
...i owe u the wires... :P
26-09-2003, 01:51 AM
Pretty nice man! I luv it! How many poly ?
26-09-2003, 05:32 AM
so all those details you spent time modeling are going to be covered by an even more detailed armor??!! humm, interesting :!!!:
___ is the character going to take off his armor at somepoint in some animation u r putting together... that would justify why even build a body mesh with all the six pack and leg muscles so defined....
___ conver to subDs then reduce some details on the body mesh (like everything)... detail that are unnecessary.
why did u not use Nurbs?? i wonder why?? humm
but the model looks OK... not too organic, too stiff looking and artificial, but kudos on the dedication
that was my meager 2 cents
26-09-2003, 05:49 AM
cool stuff man, the chest plate looks great, and those boots are not shabby either. Keep it up, can't wait to see a head on that character.
26-09-2003, 01:12 PM
Looks great Rage
Nice Details :D
JORDAN: thanks dude! about 300.000+ at rendertime with meshsmooth on 2 iterations.
vladimirjp: heya dude! i modeled the body geometry just for practice, and because its so mush easier to build the armour over the real body, not just look to some drawings.
i dont understand what u said here:
___ conver to subDs then reduce some details on the body mesh (like everything)... detail that are unnecessary. what did u mean by that??
NURBS??????? nurbs suck man, they are so inferior to subdiv (at least for me) i find it much easier to do the localized detail in subd than in nurbs....thgough nurbs has some good sides too...
...do u think that it dosnt loook organic??? explain why dude...please! cheers!! :D
DanielB: thanks dude! i appreciate that....a head huh? patience dude....
Vitor: thanks a lot my man! hope it pays back in the end....the details i mean...
26-09-2003, 01:38 PM
Look good man luv the detail you put into him, his shoes have an odd shape look a lil squashed
is he going to be apart of a animation:???:
illusion: thanks dude! yeah maybe when i finish the armour i go back to the boots, to tweak them a bit...
about the animation, dunno.....maybe, hopefully....:D
26-09-2003, 02:42 PM
Dude, see i go away again and bang, you model some more and oh my god how cool is that amour, this is looking like a very nice detailed model. I just love the detail on the chest plate ans shin gaurds. YOu are becoming a great master of the polygon dude.
I have to say your meshes always look so clean, im sure ive said this before on other threads, but that in it self is an art. I will try and keep a look out for updates buddy.
:D :D :D :xyz:
26-09-2003, 04:09 PM
that look ssweetr
and the shoes only tickle my fasion sense now,..technically nothing wrong
lovely **** there matey... have another one
26-09-2003, 07:07 PM
woah.. coming along nicely dude, great armor details man, cant wait to see it done.. :D
26-09-2003, 11:52 PM
So the "Balrog Lord" strikes again, hum? Great work on the plate man! Are you gonna do all those details on the sketch? If yes, the you are truly insane and... you got my full admiration! Man, I found someone just like me!:D
27-09-2003, 04:46 PM
Good Work Man, i wait more up.
28-09-2003, 05:45 PM
Killer model you got there. I was looking over this thread, and those sketches on the first page are something else. Do you mind if I use them? or perhaps I should be asking Avatar this?
I really only need the body ones, I don't plan on making an ecthelion of my own. If so, do you have a side sketch as well? It could really help.
Thanks, appreciate any response.
wolfy: my man, ive seen your space pirate and it looks quite damn good dude...thanks a lot for the compliments and encouraging dude! good luck on your reel!!
TyKeiL: thanks a lot dude
Gl2eEn: thanks my man, i apreciate it
Avatar: yup, i strike back. thanks man. yup im going for the full details on this one, and YES IM INSANE! MUHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA...oops sorry\, got a bit carried away...THANKS!
enthombed: thanks my man!
Drew Carey: thanks dude! i donnt mind if u used them, u may ask avatar for his kind permission, he owns the thing...hehe, yes i jhavce a side sketch, but only if my man avatar permits it...hehe cheers dude!
thats it boys, update hopefully for tomorrow...
30-09-2003, 08:06 PM
Wow man, awsome is no word for your work, really.
I saw the Ecthelion char the first time at 3DZealots Forum and already at that time I admired your modelling skill but now... its fantastic. Those edge-structures are 99,9% perfect!
I'm looking forward to the next improvments.
Yeay!! More updates.
The armor is really lookin great. I see you're going to go all out on the decorations. Really great so far. Don't forget the chain mail. Thats going to be a pain to make.
02-10-2003, 04:31 AM
i like what you've done in this update man. i like how you've massaged the cloth around the back of the knees and on the boots. they feel much more natural now. good job there.
the one crit i have though is in its proportions so far. i guess in that render you posted from the pelvis down the character feels very light, thin legs, i guess elfish. but the chest plate seems to overemphasize the broadness and size of his torso. its a stylistic non technical suggestion (read ignore if you want to ;) ) but i'd say unify the feel of the character, is he big and strong, is he light and fast? i think it will really pull the image together and solidify it if you stylistically match the two components in terms of its proportions.
looking forward to more updates. good work so far :).
02-10-2003, 08:59 AM
read the other elf thread, detail for the sake of detail, and you might use the model for something else later ;). dont know how i missed this either, scary kewl detail on both avatars concept and the model, ill just go shoot miself :halo:
02-10-2003, 09:43 PM
When I made the character I was thinking than, being a swordsman and not an archer, the plate must be heavier, thougher, to endure much more "fire" than a leather armor of an archer. Ofcourse, we can debate the craftmanship of the elves in making lite armors and weapons, or about they fighting skills that cut the need of a heavy armor. After all it is rage's decision. He has my full "bless";) to modify the armor as he believe to fit the character. If he needs it I will make a liter armor for the character. So, rage buddy, if you need me, just give me a howl:)
02-10-2003, 11:17 PM
The model looks great so far. I have been using the pics you posted to help me out with mine. My only crit right now would be that his butt is slightly (VERY SLIGHT) saggy. Other than that, the guy looks great. Keep up the good work!
03-10-2003, 12:28 AM
I like your model a lot, if you can finish it I think it will be grrrreat stuff!
Ah I almost forgot!...If you're feeling tired, and you don't have time to model don't give up! You can allways use the "terrible ogre inspired by the terrible wolf" techique. Fast modelling, ya that's what we all need!:D
03-10-2003, 11:27 PM
Drew Carey, if rage has agreed to share with you the body sketch of Echtelion I have nothing against that. So, as long as rage its ok with that, you can use the sketches.
04-10-2003, 08:03 AM
That's super, I'd really like to use those sketches!
Rage, if it's not too much trouble could you post the side pic? Take your time, I'm in no hurry.
P.S. Thanks Avatar! I appreciate it!
lil update guys, dont have time for reply to all the comments, will do that tomorrow, hope u can excuse me!
all comments are welcome and hopefully u can comment oon this lil update, not much, hope to continue tomorrow...
cheers and thanks to u all!
16-10-2003, 08:09 PM
Great, super clean mesh
16-10-2003, 10:32 PM
Awsome! I'm deliriouse happy to know that the elven king is still "hot". The armor and all makes him look slim and I'm sure that, after you'll add the kilt, he will look as intended. Keep amazing us buddy!
17-10-2003, 12:38 AM
Haven't kept up with this thread:o
It's looking great man, nice work:D Love details
17-10-2003, 01:03 AM
rage....i hate you! okay, i don't really hate you, but damn man, so good! that's it! i'm deleting my character and starting over. too many problems. too many stupid mistakes. too many etc etc :P
/me deletes character
whew. that felt good. yep. ... ... oh no what have i done!?!?!?
17-10-2003, 04:59 AM
its kind of amazing that you totally modelled the body in full detail and now have done the armor in full detail and it covers up the body! i see some dedication here :D ... well a lot of dedication
i hope my models start coming out this good one day :grr:  ;) :D
17-10-2003, 07:48 AM
Very good mate, You can definetly work those polys!!
Just one thing...I would add some more ripples on the fornt side of the pants to make it look more cloth like. Or are those the legs? If so...scratch my comment.
Can't wait to see him further along the line.
P.S. Do you think you can post those sketches now?
Appreciate it dearly.
17-10-2003, 01:26 PM
As always good sir i go away and come back and yet more detail has gone into this one. And the thing that impresses me the most is how clean the mesh is, there doesnt seem to be a single way ward vert. Really is looking nice my friend.
ANd your work always seems to get that little better every time, which can only be a good thing buddy. Keep it up and please take these stars as an insentive to work on him. *****
:D :D :D :xyz:
3Dragon: thanks dude! im working my ass off on this one...
Avatar: hehey m8! wassup? of course its hot! its hotter than ever!! it burns my head! hehehehe yes, the armour still looks thin and light, as an elven armour should be at least for me... cheers!
rubberduck: thanks my man! im glad u like the details...
Zytrex: what have u done man!! haha im glad my work inpires u in some way....truly
Borg: thanks man!
[X]treme: thanks my man, yup, lots of dedication, and remember, practice is the best teacher.
Drew Carey: thanks dude, yes those are his pants, if u check the previous updates u will see lotsa wrinkles in the back of his knee...and yes, its lacking detail there i guess but i will come to that dont worry...hehe...the sketches are on the start of this thread...:D :D
wolfy: wasssap dude! im making my best to mantain a good topology, although most of the armour is quite rigid...so it wont relally deform...
and about my work getting better and better, of course, thats the way its supposed to, i cant never stress it enough...practice makes the masters what they are, and i want to become one, believe me...
THANKS FOR THE STARS!!
thanks to all for the comments, now im back on the road starting max to continue my work...
17-10-2003, 04:40 PM
its pretty cool.....TOLKIEN MIGHT BE HAPPY IN HIS GRAVE!
17-10-2003, 04:42 PM
Come on Rage!! I was refering to the side sketch, you said you'd post it if Avatar would allow it, and he did.
He he, you are one silly man...
and here it is! the side sketch made by Avatar "pencilman" Mates Laurentiu. Sorry i missed it i thought i had already post it on the first page of the thread! enjoy!
- couple of wrinkles done to the pants, not much and no happy with them, needs lotsa tweaking dunno if they will go on the final model cause they wont be visible, and theyre eating precious memory and viewport redraw capabilities.
- inner belts almost done (a pair of belst on the side are missing, next thing to do
- bottom part armour (i call them "ass-cover") nearly finished, a bit of tweaking is needed...and the openings and secure belt (how do u think he puts that thing on?) are also missing
18-10-2003, 06:58 AM
Thanks a lot Rage, I'll put this to use as soon as possible.
As for the new wrinkles, I have to admit I'm not loving them, I'm thinking you may have rushed it a little, take your time with the ripples and wrinkles. Besides that, superb!
yes but having in mind thet they will be behind a kind of skirt he will have, i thing i might take them out, as i said before...
about the sketch....you are welcome!
18-10-2003, 07:30 PM
i think it would be a good place for wrinkles, but it just like theyre all being pulled to one center point
keep up the top notch work :p
19-10-2003, 10:30 PM
Men, keep in mind that in the end there might be an animation! And unless rage owns a render farm of some awsome power, with the balrog in it and the ruined city as a background, the scene will be a sistem burner!
Hey if you guys need to borrow a system for some render time i am more than willing to lend a hand, I have a Dual 2.8 gig system with a 256 radeon card in it ready to rock!!!
21-10-2003, 01:26 AM
What not big enough for you?
21-10-2003, 05:36 AM
this is , as beyonce says "Beautylicious"... this is a gr8.....the fountain rises again......
I wonder what an influence tolkien left in this world.......
By the way.... can you post some pictures of you balrog coz i cant get them from the thread....they dont open.... thanks bud!
22-10-2003, 12:59 AM
hey rych you should get virtual private networking cranking
actually having a 3dtotal virtual private network would be heaps good.. hmm must learn how
sorry kuman,.. you already know what i think of your model.. :o)
22-10-2003, 02:41 AM
Byonce actually says...Bootylicious...but its is that too...!!:o  :!!!:
07-04-2004, 12:52 PM
THE MAN IS BACK!!! And with updates nonetheless! Great to see you again my friend!
As for the updates, there are some small crits:
the forearm need work (but its obviouse that you are already doing that); the legs seem to be too long but I thing that is only because the thigh are too thin. Try to give more volume to the thigh, work on that croch and everything will be ok.
That's it, nothing for now. I'm very happy to see you back and I hope you'll be around for a long time feeding us updates!
Very Very nice, but I would have to say the butt is bothering me. And from the back the armor looks a little plain compared to the front............there is no real definition. Course i don't know if you havn't touched that yet or what.
07-04-2004, 02:18 PM
Welcome back it's been a while since this graet post didi'nt pop up!!!It's great to see you back !!!I love the modeling the mesh is pretty clear !!
Just one or tow thing thou ,the butt deems a bit to flat to my opinion and just an ethic question about the pointy part of the front armor seems bizzare to me...
Anyway greatr work hope we'll get quick updates !
07-04-2004, 02:33 PM
impressive modeling and detail:eek: im outa words
hehe thanks guys!
its good to be back again!
most of tha parts that have no definition will be covered in cloth or armour (like the back of the armour or the ******, or the forearm....AVAVTAR my man....you are the designer of this, u should know better!!! hehehe :p
and about the pointy part pf the armour...i think its rather cool, i like it, but thanks for pointing that out
well guys see ya in the next update!
cheers and thanks for the encouraging
07-04-2004, 09:41 PM
That is some amazing work Rage.
If you get the chance could you tell me how you modeled all those details in the armour and shin guards?
I was wondering if the detail on the armour was actually built off the exsisting polys, Or were they made seperate and then attached to the mesh.
Im still new to 3D, So I would think if they were built from the exsisting mesh, that meshsmooth would mess it up real bad.
Other than that.
Keep up the fabulous work.
Looking forward to seeing him complete.
WIP - Android 69
08-04-2004, 01:43 AM
Long time no see man :) Nice to see you again ;)
Looks great so far
He seems to like tight trousers :P
You're crazy, man. All this details modeled  He'll look awesome, if he ever gets finished.
Nothing to crit
Btw: nice to see you back. Gives me hope to see a balrog-update ;)
08-04-2004, 05:49 AM
very cool indeed, but 2 things bother me, his forearm, the muscles aren't quite right, and his elbow and tricep region, just seems kinda funky. Sides from that awesome work.
08-04-2004, 06:07 AM
very nice rage......very good muscles..
thanks to all the comments dudes!
some more updates
17-04-2004, 11:33 AM
Looks awesome, love the details;) Nothing to crit, other than you don't post enough updates:eek: :)
17-04-2004, 12:45 PM
Love the bracers and I agree with rubberduck. More updates would be nice my friend.
17-04-2004, 01:42 PM
really awesome I love your model (and the novels of tolkin, too ;) )
but there are some strange artefacts underneath the chest
(could be a strange shadow or gi artefact...) I marked them in the atached picture, I hope you don┤t mind that I have painted on your picture so cruel...
Are these things (don┤t know the right words :grr: )
before his little Ecthelion made of metal or leather?
If it is made of metal he could get serious trouble if he want to waive something from the ground.
thanks buds! im doing the best i can to squeeze some time for this baby...u know how it is...
vaang: those are shadow map artifacts, nothing to worry about....and that part is made of leather.
cheers dudes! see ya next time
i just realized that mysteriously my "scenes" directory and my "plugins" directory dissapeared, along with all the files from ecthelion, the balrog and ****, some of them i can recover from a backup (like the balrog) but some of them are missing for good, like ecthelion, my beloved superproyect.
Im pissed of like ****, so please i would thank some encouraging and backtapping.
10-09-2004, 04:27 AM
WTF??? You lost all that stuff? That is total ******** man. Erm here's a thought. Get a piece of software called "get data back" for you system and run a search on your hardrive. Once I lost Lizabell because I accidentally formatted my harddrive. Anyhow this found it. There are other pieces of software that do the same job. Have a look here for a start:
It may cost you a bit to do it, but probably well worth it ;)
Otherwise, I guess you'll have to start a new pet project.
10-09-2004, 04:30 AM
Maybe use the Freeware software called:
"Deleted File Analysis Utility 2.5"
This will list all of the recoverable items. That way you can see if it's possible, without financial risk. If you see your project there, then you can get some recovery stuff. Not bad eh??? :D
10-09-2004, 04:40 AM
DUDE! Thanks Monte. Does it work for full recovery? My dad would love this...so would I XD
10-09-2004, 05:06 AM
Ok, invariably you WILL lose some stuff.... Here's my limited understanding of how it works (I will use a Harry Potter style of description to fill in all of the blanks I don't know):
1. Hard-disks are made of lots of little pieces of magic. ;) :p When a piece of data is written, a lock-spell is put on that piece of magic to stop it being overwritten by other magic, good or evil.
2.Whenever you delete something the lock-spell is banished, and your computer now knows it can over-write the magic.
3. Essentially, the data is still there. A file is made up of lot's of pieces of magic. Imagine for example a Bitmap, let's say it's made of 2000 bits of magic... Ok, you delete the Bitmap, and download a smaller one, it may only be 20 bits of magic, but because it has overwritten some of the disk where the deleted bitmap was stored, only 1980 bits of that bitmap remain.
4. In some cases, this may mean a file is unusable, in others it may be partially complete, maybe a bit corrupt. This may often be better than nothing. When it comes to Max though, you want an untouched file probably. If like me you save all files incrementally and many many times, you will probably be able to return something. :D
10-09-2004, 05:09 AM
o_o I dislike Harry Potter. XD you lost me with all the magic..
10-09-2004, 05:38 PM
Really? Cuz' I HATE Harry Potter :grr:  :p
10-09-2004, 06:44 PM
A disk drive is like a very smart little squirrel. If you give him a bag of acorns (a bitmap or any other file) he takes all the individual acorns(individual bits of data) and hides them in the nooks of his favourite trees all through the forest (foresst=disc drive). The little squirrel is very smart so he always remembers where he hid each acorn and what was unique about it and what order they go back in the bag. He also runs around constantly to make sure no other squirrel is stealing the acorns. If someone knocks the squirrel on the head hard enough (disk error, or corrupt/deleted file) he'll forget where he hid all of the acorns or maybe just what order they go back in the bag, but all of the acorns are still in trees if you want to go looking for them and know his hiding spots. Those acorns will still be there unless another squirrel has come along and stolen them or replaced the acorns with his(the other squrrel's) walnuts.
10-09-2004, 07:37 PM
AHHH HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAA! Yeeeeesssss the squirrel method; a most prestigious school of thinking. Very difficult to grasp for the novice though.
i tried the Deleted File Analysis Utility 2.5 and it found everything! including some dirs i didnt realized where missing. BUT it found no trace of any ecthelion files....i will continue and try some more softs...well see
thanks for the help dude, i really apreciate it!
11-09-2004, 02:55 AM
I wish you luck my friend. It would be a real petty to loose all that wonderfull work of yours.
hehe i used the actctive@ undelete utility and i recovered everything!!! hehehe including ecthelion! hehehe, im happy...thanks monte for all your help dude!
mybe it would be a good moment to continue my work on him.....:p
14-09-2004, 08:02 PM
Wow, I'm glad that you got your echelion back. I've been watching your thread, although rather quietly, and would hate to have seen all your work go to waste. I sure hope that you've backed up all your stuff ASAP though! Once you have your backups, lets see some more updates! Cheers!
14-09-2004, 08:12 PM
Good news Rage...now that we all know you still have him we'll be expecting some progress! :)
14-09-2004, 11:40 PM
Ahh, what a relief.
<ahem!> I require no payment; my payment shall be that justice has been done here. :D
Get cracking then dude. And back your work up onto CD this time!!!
15-09-2004, 03:12 AM
(singing) Oh happy day!!!
Get that Ecthelion on the road again and maybe the Balrog will get back so the hero will have somebody's a** to kick!
15-09-2004, 10:15 AM
great work rage!! :) :D :D
at last some updates on this one, found some time to keep working
comments are welcome! hope u like what u see
now that i see the 4 images in a single page i think i will redo the gauntlets, they look too small and there is something definately wrong with the thumb (and i also watched the WarcraftIII cinematic of evil prince arthas in full armor for the 1257653th time and loved those giant looking gauntlets, though my new ones wont be that large)
cheers, updstes again hopefully tomorrow
01-07-2005, 07:25 PM
Wow! Rage returns! I haven't seen you in ages! WB. :D Looking sweet mate. I suspect you may be right about the gauntlets though, either that, or it's the rest of the arms which are to big. :)
yes, the arms may be too big also, but its the whole point, a skinny looking character with the waist of a girl but huge back and muscled arms, im starting the gauntlets from scratch, the ones he has now are reused hands with a push modifier hehe, now im building them from scratch. thanks for the input dude!
here are the new gloves i did, some of the wrinkles dont look good i know but well...im tired of cutting new edgeloops hehe and i dont have a leather glove to put on and study the wrinkles...
and some wires
03-07-2005, 06:51 PM
Wow, the rage is back! Welcome my friend! I'm glad you're back on the forum and back on the project! May this be a good time for you!
hehe, good to see ya dude! happy u dropped by to see how ur little artwork takes a step into the third dimension.
here is a final update on the gauntlet. Modeled the seams and simplified the wrinkles a bit, i know that the seam is wrong on the thumb, but then again....whos watching??.
Now ill start with the dudes head modelling, here is the concept art also from Mates (AVATAR) with a few corrections to make the proportions fit on both views, hope u dont mind dude.
08-07-2005, 01:12 AM
honestly, compared to the rest of the model the gloves are whack!
no doubt the modelling is good... but IMO they dont suit the rest of the model, they lack feeling... they are too static.
i know they are only hands but give them some soul man!
08-07-2005, 02:31 AM
Well, personally I can understand both rage and you, skripturez... Ido hope what misses now on the glove will be completed later with good texturing, awsome shaders, illumination and a perfect bump map. Maybe, after you finish the basic modeling, you will pass it through Zbrush for detailing, rage. Ad ofcourse you can modify the concept as you need; I'm just anxiouse to see the results ;)
yes, they are just leather gloves skripturez hehe, and they look static cause they┤re in a totally extended neutral pose, showing no spirit or character... and of course they will look a lot better with the leather texture, if not, maybe ill re-model them, cant get wnough practice of this project  .
thanks avatar for the encouraging! and about z-brush, never tried that app, maybe its time for giving it a chance...well see.
I started the head today, still a bit rough for showing it here in the forums, maybe ill post something tomorrow...

Oh my God, finally a head? :)
hehe...I've been waiting for this phase for a while. Good concept.
Oh and the gloves look a little thin to me, but I'm not entirely sure.
Very good work overall mate, keep it up!
(and don't keep us waiting with this head :))

Here is what I think skripturez meant by "personality": a bit of nuckles, a bit of tendons. I would sugest a very detailed leather glove (complex model with some bump) but its up to you.

And here are a few wires that might help you, if not now, maybe later.

most amazing work, i love the suttle detailing that you've done on the armour. cant wait to see more, keep at it.

okey i know what he meant but these are gloves, not hands, all that detailing disapperas behind a thick layer of leather, thats why they look so simple, its just leather, i hope that when i texture them they will look a lot better.
thanks man for the reference, u can never have too much of it...
neo_mosher_zion and Drew Carey thanks for the encouraging!
here is a image of the head as it is now...
those smile wrinkles drove me crazy but i think i finally got them thanks to the tut by arild wiro (secondreality.ch) wich gave me some good wireframe reference on those wrinkles.
feel free to comment about edgeloop and topology though its still very WIP and "plain"...
Hey welcome back rage!! Good to see you were able to save everything. Keep it up.

Looking good! You still have the problem of the 5 side poly above the nose but I guess that's just temporary. And I'm attaching a few more references I found. Maybe they'll help you.

hey, sorry about that confusing post... i was a little tipsy.
as i said myself i know they are gloves, i am sure they will gain more life through texturing. the head is comling along nicely,
keep it up
