View Full Version : Terrabite - Steam Punk - Pinion

Hey guys! This is my first competition here, and I've decided to jump right in. I did a lot of research tonight and pulled together what I think is a nice concept.
Her name is Pinion (after a type of gear you could probably find on her). Not only is she a survivor, but a technical trendsetter. She came near to death when the bomb was dropped and radioactivity spread to her heart, but was saved when some people found a way to replace it, steam punk style! Now running in the dark, electric-less future, Pinion supply's her body with steam to live on.
She has a collar around her neck to keep the smoke from the pipes on her shoulders away, gears working to pump her heart, and scars around the insertions on her torso.

Hi! Nice gears! How did you make the black smoke from it? Looks great!

I'm liking the cocept, so the gears are supplying the steam for her heart.

bibhuti - Thank you much ^___^
Fbios - Thanks! The smoke is a brush set you can find on deviantart. Search 'smoke brushes' :)
buzz001 - Yes that's it :) Thank you!
Hey guys! Thank you for the support so far. :smug: I'm currently zsketching her body, hopefully have most of that done by tonight. Here are two options of colour for Pinion's outfit. The first being the traditional steam punk colour palette, the other a more modern steam punk palette. Let me know which one you guys like best. :lame:

I like the blue green look. since is a dark period in time I dont think that materials will be shinny. The colors are looking great, and thanks for the brush info.

look nice, I like the top color scheme, I think the warmer colors do it more justice

Tarik2d - Thank you muchly! :D
buzz001 - Ahh, I agree. And you're welcome. :)
ChaosDragonDZ - Thanks! And yea, I'll probably end up doing the gold. I personally like the blue more, but that's probably because I'm pale o_o -looks better in blue- and she's not -__-
Ihazard - Thank you! And thanks for the colour opinion. ^_^
D R E A M N T - GOLD it is! It was originally suppose to be shiny tattoos on her nipples, but if that's too showy, I'll make it into formed metallic plates with tattoos of the gear details on the sides.
Just a little sneak peak guys, both things are in the super beginning stages. I haven't done that many high poly sculpts yet....but with a little work, I think I can make this near perfect. ;)

I would definitely go with the gold plates over the nipples.A classier look though I kinda like the exposing idea too.Very Russian esq'.
Watch those subdivisions on that sculpt, dont wanna go too high too fast.Thats what always screws me up.So far so AMAZING,keep it up lady. You've come a LONG way.
Oh yea...and I saw you said you liked the blue version better.Maybe you should explore more color schemes and find a balance between the two.^__^

I like the traditional steam punk colour palette.
interesting concept! Looking forward for more!

D R E A M N T - Ok! And don't worry, I'm only using the higher subdivisions for small tweaks that are needed, always working on the lower ;P
xxxcubanxxx - Thank you much! ^__^
Appr_oved - Oh well thank you mister :D
SR_6274 - Yes...I'm definitely rethinking the colours. And thanks :)
Fbios - Thank you and you're welcome sir!

Hey guys! This is probably my third attempt at a realistic head. Final sculpting is still in progress, but let me know if you think anything is really off. :lame:

07-01-2010, 03:45 AM
yeah like said by the other guys, the overall shape looks good, you just got to tweak the features around ;) remember to keep a mirror handy even if you are not trying to make an exact copy of your own face it helps to just see the how shapes connect with each other. I'll be watching.

ChaosDragonDZ - I can't make her too perfect XD And thank you!
xxxcubanxxx - Thanks for the tip! That's actually a good idea, usually I just feel my face for the structure but a mirror would be more handy -___-
DannyCG - Thank you very much ^_^
Thanks for the help guys :) I'm nearly done with her face, have to tweak the eyelids a bit more, then I'm moving onto her cornrows.

looking real nice! loving the detail of the hair, and the face has a lot of character. My only suggestion so far would be to maybe rotate out the ears just a smidge, they seem veery flat against the side of the head at the moment

Ihazard - This material was just matcap gray. I rendered it to best so it gave a very refined look. And thanks! :)
Kirgan - Thank you, and I’ve adjusted them, hopefully to your liking ^_^
L3XICON - Thank you much! I’ve adjusted the ears, let me know if they look better :)
D R E A M N T - Tank yuuuuu! *.*
Thanks so much for the support everyone! <3 I refined the collar so it’s not so blobby and more hard surface, rotated the ears, and adjusted her eyelids. I’ve also added her soft clothing, gloves, and some of her accessories. Doing a whole lot more tonight so the next update will be HUGE!

Appr_oved - AIGHHTTT :D
xxxcubanxxx - I agree :P I have many little tweaks, I shall add that to the list! And thank you :)
Jerico - Thanks! :) Hmm, is there a specified year that the bomb dropped? I know it takes place 30 years later, but could that be in present day? And looking at the entries in the previous game art challenge, some of those look a bit in the future as well, most of them do actually. She has things that run as steam punk but she wants to look good too ^_^ I don't understand why most people are making their characters look like fashion went back in time. I know that if a bomb dropped today, we would not dress in early 1900's style clothing. :P
Updating later guys!
poopipe
13-01-2010, 08:10 PM
it's conventional to dress your steampunk characters in late 19th/early 20th century inspired fashions. No idea why.
crit wise...
her cheekbones are upsetting me slightly, they definitely need smoothing off.
Otherwise im quite interested.
:D

It's conventional to dress your characters in that late 1800's type of dress because that is the dress that was used when Steam power was at its peak. For some reason if technology doesn't change then neither do clothing styles :P
I agree with poop about the belly button. And I think the style of clothing you have there is fine, perhaps a bit too risky for what I would consider SteamPunk. But who says we can't all see SteamPunk differently
Tarik2d

TerraBite

Thanks everyone for the crits ^_^
I have a twist with steam punk, which defined on dictionary.com is: a genre of science fiction set in Victorian times when steam was the main source of machine power; also written steam-punk.
But it was not clear for the challenge that the style of clothing had to follow strict Victorian times. I plan to give her the traditional colours and technology with hints of the old elegant style built in, but looking at the entries for the last competition (Army of One), I just don't understand how it follows in regards to the time period. Things will definitely run on something other than electricity, but to follow the theme of the storyline, updating the looks seemed what it was asking for. Not trying to argue XD that's just how I perceived it.
Next post will be an update guys :)

She is looking sweet. The tubes connected to her lower chest cavity will affect her skin somehow because it looks to clean ( I know is still early ). I expect to see the skin bulging around the pipe because of the heat and connectors. Is a very good looking model with great detail.
poopipe
13-01-2010, 09:40 PM
I've got an idea re: the clothes.
don't worry about it ;)
seriously though - it looks like it fits the theme to me. That collar thing will be classic steampunk if it's lined with red velvet - it could maybe do with a bit of a chestpiece like on a jules verne style deep sea diver helmet or something but you're well within the confines of the genre as it is.
edit:
furthermore.
the brief doesn't state pure steam punk, it talks about improvised tech 30 years after the bomb drops. Like you say, we don't know when the bomb dropped.

I did a quick paint over of what I can modify her outfit to be (and with a lot more detail than the concept shows). I've rotated the pipes on her chest to face up, as if I were here, I wouldn't want smoke by my face. The chest/stomach area can be closed (but I don't think that's nearly as sexy), but I like that you can see where the pipes enter her chest and you will see that it's swollen. Please let me know what you guys think. Thank you for the support again! ^____^

Sculpt looks really nice. I like the logo on the dog tag. Really nice detailing in the gloves and and around the opening in the front of her outfit. I think you're missing the bones in the ankle?
I'll second the motion that the arms look a bit short, but I think its just an illusion cause by the height of the heels, making the legs look really long.

bah, dude is a relative term now :P I agree about the foot length. You should also push up the subD level on the knee pads, the slash brush didn't have enough polys to cut in there very well.
I'd take a look at the eyes again as well. She needs belts!!! lots of them. No clue why...too much anime probably.
Keep at it.

Hi! Nice foto! you are cute. besides greate scuplt and disign.
Buzzy
20-01-2010, 03:24 PM
Pretty nice work.
I like the hair alot. And I like the stereo-system-looking thing she has built into her torso. I'm sure they are supposed to be plugs or jacks or something...but to me it looks like she has subwoofers for tits and tweeters for abs...no matter what they are supposed to be, they still look cool. Maybe pinch the skin around them so they look more "implanted".
I don't care for the buttons. Rather than sculpt them, I would probably model them as a separate piece. You'll get a cleaner bake that way.
And I am very picky about hands. For me, hands and faces are the two things that must look correct because those are the two most expressive parts of the body. The face is good, and the hands aren't bad, but that pinky finger is killing me. Its too big and is sitting too far back on the hand. All the knuckles should be almost straight in line, with the pinky dipping just a little.
BiG ToE-3DT
20-01-2010, 06:39 PM
going off what Buzzy stated about the hands, I'm thinking they may need to be all around bigger. At first glance, they seem small. Maybe its just the length of the fingers. They seem short too. Try lengthening them and see how that looks.

ur work is amazing. u have to complete this model .
I think u got my mail also. The best way i found for retopo.
Use polyboost plugin for retopo and Xnormal for normals ,
1. first export all mesh with sub 3 or 4.
2. then import mesh in max.
3. and retopolize it using polyboost plugin in max.(low poly)
see video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmIv0bXwaQY&feature=related
4. Then unwrap low version.
5. and after then use X-normal for normals(this software is free).
X-normal is best software for normals. Only u have to import high poly and low poly in X-normal and after render u got best output of normals.
See by yourself go to X-normal site.
6. and u got good result.
