here is first concept and rough blocking
The backpack's the big steampunk feature, my detail sketches are all on post-its so you'll have to wait :p

hey poop, it looks like you run in Max, I just wanted to ask, do you work your model in Edit Mesh 100% of the time or do you just use Mesh for extruding edges? I prefer to use Edit Poly but I can't seem to get that edit mode to extrude edges correctly, got any hints?
Also, looking good so far. I can't really tell what kind of impact will come from the back pack, but I'm sure it will be good.

thanks chaps :)
tarik2d : don't know, I haven't drawn the other side yet ;)
xxxcubanxxx : yes, lots of belts. mmm, straps
setschaos : cos she spends all her time wandering round a big ol post apocalyptic desert thing the backpack will have machinery and stuff for making water and cooling her down so there'll be plenty of spinny things and pipes (there's also the delicious irony of a steam powered machine needing water to run ;) ).
It'll be piled up with useful surviving gear like blankets and cooking stuff, she'll get a gun and a machete obviously but I'm not really going for mighty warrior. Just going to try and come up with something very large, practical(ish) and cool to look at.
technique wise, that came out of zbrush - its a retopo from a rough zsphere sculpt to get proportions etc. but to answer your question... No, I use editable polys for everything. Shift+drag has always extruded edges fine for me (the extrude button does something different)
more later. :)

I've decided her face is too small but it's an easy enough fix and im generally pretty happy with the way she's shaping up so far :D
straps will be leather for the most part but I think I know where you're heading and its certainly under consideration.

dhin - I considered it but dropped the idea for basically that reason.
aaaanddd,
whats the deal with marmoset? I had a quick prod at it a few months back but never tried to get anything specific into it then forgot about it.
Given that I have a fair bit of experience with game engines and the like do we reckon I can learn the necessaries for succesful export and shaders in no more than a couple of hours?
goast666
14-01-2010, 12:03 AM
you can learn marmoset in an hour or so. pretty simple all around really. But it won't cast shadows on the negative normal of a polygon and the shadows are pretty much butt if you have it in conjunction with another object. Really kinda flaky. Alphas are a bit wonky as well.
hey man looking good you should work more on her boobies tho' I'd imagine they would be pushed in some instead of how they are like now..
if that didnt make much sense to you let me know and ill make a quick paintover

bbox : that made perfect sense and it's in the pipeline.
Theres still another pass or two to go in zbrush for the organics but I want to get the hard surface / max modelling out of the way before I put any sculpting time in.
I've got a firearm in progress at the moment but it's friday night and I can't be bothered to post a picture so you'll have to wait :p
I'm a bit nervous of the bake on this one - i was going to try xnormal in anger for the first time but I'm not sure I want to waste time learning it properly when i should be modelling.

glove armour and some joints on the backpack mostly...
Warlock 279
18-01-2010, 07:12 PM
Looks good. I do really dig that back pack.
My eye keeps coming to the back of her hand, and I'm torn between saying, "leave it empty so the eye has a place to rest," or "put a strap or some studs/rivets on the back of it because its too empty."
poopipe
18-01-2010, 08:28 PM
i know what you mean - I may just paint something on it at texture time to break up the monotony a little.
Cant decide whether to ditch the hand armour on one side or not - she ain't going to be able to hold a gun with those things on but then again there's nothing to stop her taking a glove off if she needs to shoot someone.
I will post a pic of the revolver later. I'm going to do something with the boots now
Buzzy
18-01-2010, 09:00 PM
She is very symmetrical right now and removing one of the gloves would add some nice asymmetry. However, a single big glove has been done more than a zillion times (thanks in no small part to Hellboy) and it has become extremely cliched.
Lesser of two evils, and all that.
poopipe
18-01-2010, 11:06 PM
I blame michael jackson for that - the single glove was possibly greatest of his sins.
ok
here's a few backpack details and some gun
I forgot to do the feet

BiG ToE-3DT
18-01-2010, 11:18 PM
I'm going to have that gun made.
protect myself in 2012.
edit: Buzzy, if he makes it huge. Like, the barrel just kisses the ground, the handle should be large enough to fit the hand.
Buzzy
18-01-2010, 11:42 PM
Ah, I see....make the gun as long as her leg.
Do it.
poopipe
19-01-2010, 07:35 AM
just for you chaps :)
also - it's occured to me that if I drop the finger and palm armour on one side she could hold a gun without ending up with single iron fist cliche problems
and.
I wonder what it'd cost to have the gun built up life size at shapeways...
Cordero
19-01-2010, 11:50 AM
That's the kind of gun i like to call "hand cannon". Or maybe anti-aircraft gun...
edit: and of course, great work! i like the way you use wraps on all of your models!
Warlock 279
19-01-2010, 08:44 PM
You know, you really only have to get rid of the armor on her trigger finger. Maybe replace the palm armor of her shooting hand with a strap, and wrap that around to the outside of the armor, kinda like the armor's been modified to suit her needs.
...and I really dig that gun.

poopipe
21-01-2010, 12:51 AM
erm
alright then..
I've been over some bits to sharpen them up, put some work in on the belts and I may yet drop some more armour from her right hand.
The gloves need work, foot armour needs work (I'll leave it much as it is I think but I have to sort out the strap/plate arrangements), the torso badly needs another pass although i did squash the boobies a bit
im tired and my neck hurts. it's also time to move to big computer
goast666
21-01-2010, 01:05 AM
I think wider hips. Her boob belt also needs something to keep it "up" the way it is. Right now it looks like the belt is holding her boobs and her boobs are holding the belt...if that makes sense.
Don't lose the armor on her right arm, that is really one of the main parts of the asymmetry that I like about the piece. She could probably lose the extra piece of armor she has on the palm of her left hand though. eh, my 2 cents.
poopipe
21-01-2010, 01:16 AM
:D
yes - more junk in the trunk is required
thats what boob belts do... It does need pinching in as it looks like friction is the only thing holding it up (they all do).
what i mean about losing armour is that I might have to lose some more finger armour to make it feasible for her to hold the gun.
I need to rebuild the scarf too - its crap.
I'm gonna have to start the low-poly pretty soon. theres not all that long left now...

poop - Alright, I can see the finger armor going bye bye. Hmm...she needs a wrench in there somewhere as well. And yeah, the scarf is crap...but I knew you knew that. :P
now that I look at it more I can't decide if I like the Gears of War cankle look she has or not. I mean, GOW by no means pioneered the idea of the shin to toe idea but...hmm. I think I like it, kinda anime / joe mad style in there.
Keep it. Not that you were listening to me anyway.

21-01-2010, 10:24 PM
replacement scarf - gonna fluff it up a bit so it meets her chin I think. it'll probably be woolly.

BiG ToE-3DT
22-01-2010, 12:27 AM
quick suggestion for the main boob strap. To get past the whole "whats holding it up" issue. I think friction would be just fine. All you need is to show some stress on the strap and possibly some under boobage, being squeezed out the bottom.
Buzzy
22-01-2010, 12:43 AM
I can't help but notice that the boob straps are not see-through. A shame.

thats the worst retopologised - the bad news is that she's at about 4k already.
I've been deliberately inefficient so there should be plenty I can strip out later.
My main worry is the deadline - it's awfully close...
Warlock 279
28-01-2010, 03:18 AM
Final high poly looks good, I note the gun is now properly holstered.
Ya, that new deadline creeps up in a hurry compared the old 5-6 week challenges we had.
poopipe
28-01-2010, 07:53 AM
I didn't help myself with the deadline to be honest. I knew damn well I'd only get about 30-40 hours on this over the month yet still chose to cover her in belts and straps, not really bother to concept things properly and insist on using a 3 year old laptop for everything (so i could watch tv) when I've got a big fat xeon workstation upstairs.
If I can get the rest of the low poly out of the way tonight I'll be ok - the unwrap should be a breeze, biped will do for rigging and I'm not worried about texturing.
looking at this....
I need to redistribute some of those polys - the shoulders have been given short measures and I don't think I need that many verticals in the fleshy bits of her tummy
anything else stick out?
Buzzy
28-01-2010, 01:10 PM
The low poly looks good so far.
Her butt, face, and boobs stand out to me as being dense. Her boobs are under a strap, so they hardly need any polys at all. And I think you over-modelled the belt loops around her waist
poopipe
28-01-2010, 03:36 PM
I was concentrating on the important bits ... :D
correct, correct and correct again. except maybe about the face - I want to get some facial morphs in at some point (post deadline) so I'll need most of them edges
poopipe
29-01-2010, 01:41 AM
this is taking forever
note to self...
make less interesting models in future
also its at 8k
which is not good, I wanted to be at about 7k for the body so there was enough left to do the backpack and gun.
Warlock 279
29-01-2010, 02:24 AM
Some places I think you may be able to clean up [keep in mind, highpoly/normal map isn't part of my work flow].
The belts around her torso, do they need that middle edge running the whole way around?
The back of the calves, they're awfully dense, since there's no need for deformation there, no?
The straps on the back of her thighs? Relative to the much large straps in the front near her ankles, the ones in back seem pretty dense for their size, I think you could knock some edges out there.
Not gonna save you 1k triangles, but its a start.
BiG ToE-3DT
29-01-2010, 04:19 AM
could you use a geo sphere for the wrist ball.
poopipe
29-01-2010, 08:09 AM
excellent points both of you. Other people's eyes are awesome.
I'll probably be able to ditch quite a few from the back in general since it'll be covered by backpack
poopipe
30-01-2010, 12:23 PM
the end is in sight at last.
I'm going to need a couple hundred tris from somewhere cos I can't see the backpack fitting in under 1000 but I don't anticipate a problem.
right. smoke, coffee then backpack.

Joseph Pomeisl
30-01-2010, 01:47 PM
if you get rid of the geo for the belt latch on each belt I calculate around 150+- tris; it doesn't seem neccesary to have them anyway. there's also that line of thin polygons on the side of each finger, think I know why it's there but probaly not completey needed.

actually my one big fear is that there wont be time to rig this before the deadline
The unwrap's going well for the body (halfway there already) but the backpack is looming on the horizon like some kind of horrible great ******* so depending on how that goes it'll either be rigged or not come deadline time.

Low poly looks fine, even if you did have to optimize it more than you'd like. Also the first time I think I really payed any attention to it, but you're characters silhouette is pretty sweet.
The fanning on the goggle lenses and the round bits on the back pack would concern from a smoothing standpoint a bit, but you know what you're doing, and its a quick fix if it does cause a problem.
poopipe
30-01-2010, 09:43 PM
those areas are flat with hard edges so smoothing shouldnt be a big issue - ive got ten spare polys in case i need em though :D
Joseph Pomeisl
