Hey there,
im gonna attempt to complete a SMC this time for once,
i hope i can manage this time.

This im gonna model a Casspir Armored vehicle.

You might know them from the film District 9 where they are used there by the MNU.

though currently its quite hard to get any blueprints or good reference photos
so it will be quite hard.
If someone knows a good resource where i could find Casspir photos/blueprints feel free to list them ;)

www.the-blueprints.com has a side view of a Casspir. they're usually pretty good for vehicles and guns etc. - both real and sci-fi.

yeah i got that one already, though its only a side view at low resolution,

btw this is a WIP of about 30 min's in,

Its quite a complex mesh, though i think ill add the armoured windows, on top as seperate models,
That way i dont need to cut into the geometry.

i think the suspension is gonna be the biggest challenge, since the pictures havnt got a good view on them and they are quite complex

here's a little update,
this is about 80 min's of modelling, still 160 left.

This time just some wires.

i could reuse all the windows on the side, also i tried to keep the mesh as optimised as possible.
It currently has just over 3100 polys

Feel free to comment ;)

Nice start!
I really liked the movie, cool pick for this :)
Best of luck

So far, so good, it looks like the original.

But because there aren't enough blueprints, i'd sugest to take just the base idea, and mix it with your own design.

that's the best option i guess, now i just guess every distance on the top/back plane

Also, there's a saying (no i just made it up):

The less reference there is online, the less people will be able to prove your mistakes.

Lol, you got a point there, that's why i'm looking for obscure vehicles for my new thread :D

ok, here's a little update,

i worked another hour on the project, and its shaping up quite well,
though it has a ton of small details, i hope i can fit most of them in before the deadline arrives :wall:

im 140 min's in, still 100 to go.

since the last time i added

the portholes on the side (all copypasta's)
i ajusted the top
i added hinges
i added back doors
i added the rear windows (using a different design)
i added the steps
i optimised the geometry a bit

feel free to c&c

btw have you seen my truck after last nights update yet?

I've seen it :), now.

It's comming along great, i've developed a strategy for smcs- i focus most of my details in one place. So when you look at it from 1 angle, it would look better.

edit: you have plenty of details in the back, i think it would be more impressive if you have most of the details in one place. The down side is that you have places with no geometry... But if you have time for texturing, you can solve that problem easily (normal maps)

haha thx,

currently im trying to just go past the blueprints in a semi-systematic way.

like, "where does this mess of polygons not look like my armoured truck?"
And then i fill that hole
Holes get smaller, and faster to fix as i progress

Since i havn't seen any Finals thread popup, i decided to just put them here already ;)

Here it is, it took me 235 minutes, though i had to hurry a bit in the ending,
hadn't had time for any proper texturing.

this is my entry,

its a Casspir APC, it is also used in the District9 movies.
Tough, you cant see weapons on them, it has place for 14 gunmen, they can shoot through those small hatches.
Probably the gunmen went out for dinner or something :smug:

Enjoy

i can see myself surviving being run over by this vehicle - like in the movies... nice ground clearance, suitable for all terrain...

too bad you couldn't squeeze in any artillery
