Quick mock-up of an idea. Let's see if I can engage the afterburners and actually get this finished.
17-01-2010, 06:54 AM
you need to try out the before-burners.

I'd suggest throwing in a an element or two of his before war life, you made the point to say he's an ex-fighter pilot, so lets see some airforce looking boots, or pants, or jacket, something to give him that history.
Seeing how fast you handled that whole DomWar thing last year, I'm sure you can get this chap finished up in time.

Thanks Warlock, I'm already on top of it.
I can't seem to shake the idea that this guy looks too similar to Frozone.

Testing color combos. Any preference?
18-01-2010, 03:39 PM
the two on the left.
18-01-2010, 05:18 PM
bottom 2 for me
18-01-2010, 07:04 PM
Ya, bottom two for me as well. I was liking the black and gold, kinda gives him a bee/hornet look, could always play that as mascot of his old AF unit or something. The white pops nicely tho.
18-01-2010, 07:17 PM
Warlock, that is a great idea. Maybe, just maybe, instead of the thick lines on the torso and arms, you do 3 or 4 smaller lines to represent the bee.
18-01-2010, 08:29 PM
please put little bee wings on his back if you do that - just for a giggle if nothing else

Afterburners are go!
Boy do I love holidays.
Clothes are going nicely. Haven't touched the sleeves yet.

Nice clean start

very nice, I like the contemporary feel of the concept. Keep it up.

an idea that might help is adding some accessroies that help the fighter pilot design. I looked at some images and they have what looks like suspenders hanging down in the back ( sorry I am sure there is a more technical term). Also having a mask hanging around his neck, but not on could be cool.
20-01-2010, 01:36 AM
fatninja: A mask is a pretty good idea. I've been contemplating something around his neck...like a scarf. But the mask might work. We'll see if I have time to make one.

Here's the bake for the character. Still some props to be done.
I decided to be a little crazy and make this a water-tight mesh. I'm not sure why...maybe I'm a masochist or something. That face/hood area is a topological disaster zone.
I guess he's not very steampunk...oh well, maybe I can do something with props or textures to improve on that front.

Looking good mate, where have you done the seams on this? dont worry posting if you busy :)
26-01-2010, 01:50 AM
Haha, water tight mesh, I'm sure that was a hassle. Looks like your bake is nice and clean.
As far as making it steampunk goes, I don't see an issue with giving him some props that suggest steam related elements, time period was left open, and not everyone in a steampunk world needs to be toting around their own steam tank.

Big ugly revolver. Loosely based on a Colt Anaconda.

Nice one :)

I'm calling it quits. I'm going to be out of town for several days and I won't have access to my PC. So I have to submit my work now. Another day or two would have been great, but at least I finished.
28-01-2010, 03:11 AM
Well, you might not have gotten it as finished as you'd have liked, but it looks pretty good none the less. Only thing that bugs me is the lack of pockets in his jacket, don't know why, but I really feel like there should be pockets there. Gun came out really nice.

Great character! Nice colors and pose.
28-01-2010, 07:18 AM
