About girlface research, bottom cranial volume for two asian and blond ones.
Two last nudes sketches are quite interesting, from real model or photo?

Hey washka, thanks for taking the time to write a comment, though I'm not sure I understand completely what you meant there... (might want to rephrase that) thanks for stopping by, cheers!
I'll be in Austria on a week long trip and I don't know if I'll have internet access while there.

Keep it up man, your sketch painting and research practice will drive you further.
20-04-2010, 03:18 AM

The sketches are all cool.
How do you do with the colors of the female? Do you pick new ones or do you just sample ones from the ref?
24-04-2010, 09:17 PM
hulahuga I mix them using the color sliders in Lab mode, thanks for stopping by.

First sketch in the latest pose has a really nice expression :). Any ref used?
06-05-2010, 12:36 AM
hulahuga My beautiful self :P
06-05-2010, 07:03 PM
Top right head sketch of your last post, when you're looking at you chin from a down point, it's an inverted V, It's kinda triangular, seem you've moved a bit there :), self-model is quite an hard task.
Your self painting is quite good, neck a bit long, but the face is accurate, good job there, keep it up. I think the mirror is an important tool.
Have you ever tried charcoal?
07-05-2010, 04:09 AM
washka thanks for the feedback, I did try charcoal, but I wasn't impressed.
09-05-2010, 07:59 AM
09-05-2010, 06:02 PM
The shaded one from the front looks cool :D. Seems you shortened her face a bit though.. And reduced the chin. No issue though, still looks neat :)
09-05-2010, 10:43 PM
hulahuga right, thanks for looking out :)
10-05-2010, 02:37 PM
with the Natalie Portman one I like the shaded one at the top of the post but for me it's the simplistic middle sketch that looks the most like her there. The above post .......no sure who she is but the perspective sketch is spot on, as for the side sketch is looks totally different, was the side sketch guesswork or another photo?
10-05-2010, 06:56 PM
Hmm, what you might want to do is smooth her curves out a bit, has to many sharp angles now to look real ;).
11-05-2010, 02:16 AM
hulahuga yeh that sounds right, cheers for the tip
chunkymunky Guesswork, thanks for the input
11-05-2010, 09:40 AM
Again with this Natalie Portman you're spot on with the side profiles both sketches and painting work but on the front profile you not too far off but her upper lip looks deformed and bubbley if you get my meaning, again I know it's guesswork but it's all learning I guess :) Love the simple trainer sketch too.
12-05-2010, 12:37 AM
chunkymunky thanks for the tip mate
12-05-2010, 07:27 AM
Lol that's a chef you really don't wanna hug lol!
12-05-2010, 07:18 PM

What will be your image format/size on your galleries?
21-05-2010, 06:27 PM

21-05-2010, 11:17 PM
i want to see the website, hurry man. :D
22-05-2010, 07:16 AM

22-05-2010, 09:40 PM
chunkymunky hehe cheers mate! when are you gonna open a 2d sketchbook of your own?
M_Cederstrom The registrars take a week to transfer my domain to my new host, so, unfortunately there's nothing I can do. Thanks for stopping by.
hulahuga Cheers for the tip, though I'm going for minimal need of clicks.
washka About 780px or less. Thanks for stopping by.
23-05-2010, 12:36 PM
Hmm, I actually meant a thumbnail... Just to attract the viewer... Doesn't mean more clicks, just an addition to the text...
24-05-2010, 03:20 AM
hulahuga i see, cheers!
24-05-2010, 09:11 AM
Like your last concept! I would erase the lighthouse on top right (or make it really smaller), because maybe the composition could breathe a bit more there (a bit more free space, a pinch).
Steampunk old sci-fi style?
24-05-2010, 11:47 AM
a sketchbook of my own! lmao no chance, I am so so poor at painting, drawing etc. Not gonna happen lol :)
25-05-2010, 06:24 AM
washka thanks for the tip
chunkymunky that's why a sketchbook is in order! work on it and youll be kicking my ass
25-05-2010, 08:11 AM
He he reminds me of Eddie from the Iron Maiden album covers :) Nice start.
25-05-2010, 12:57 PM
Haha, looking good :).
His torso pose looks a bit odd though...
25-05-2010, 07:11 PM
So how are the test going?
26-05-2010, 07:26 PM
chunkymunky had a poster of that one back in the day, cheers

29-05-2010, 05:31 PM
See you are going for a real smooth shading, pretty neat :-)
31-05-2010, 10:13 AM
washka thank you
04-06-2010, 01:07 AM
you should add more blood on the last one. :D
04-06-2010, 01:13 PM
"Me is Mr Zombi" excellent grammar there lol.....just kidding lovely stuff as usual, I agree we need more gore and I'd personally like to see sections missing or decaying for a real Zombie :)
04-06-2010, 01:21 PM
the zombies hardly stand straight give him a hunch for appeal.
and chunky vatsel is a english teacher at the graveyard, if you tell the zombies teaching them wrong you know what i mean ,so play it along :p
and vatsel is damn right about your own sketchbook, lets start one together, maybe a vedio book , like drawing lessons for beginner stuff,if the beginner proves us wrong , our purpose is served. ;)
07-06-2010, 12:37 AM
M_Cederstrom - I might

premium cheers glad you had a laugh :)
chunkymunky my meaning exactly
17-06-2010, 06:50 AM
Like the Venise djin, (white mask).
I was asking myself about your zombie one, looking at the shadows, is the lightning orientation different on left and right side (skeletton and girl)?
20-06-2010, 10:57 PM
washka -thanks, there are just too many light sources in that one : o
21-06-2010, 07:54 AM
The Emma Watson it's off to a great start. Just pay attention the the ear a little more, and the left eye is a little larger than it needs to be. But up to your usual excellent standard :)
16-07-2010, 11:37 PM
chunkymunky thanks for the comment mate
17-07-2010, 12:31 PM
Hmm, proportions are a bit off at places so you might want to go over that, but otherwise the last one is a pretty cool concept :). Which looks good as well..
17-09-2010, 12:06 AM
hulahuga - thank you!
17-09-2010, 02:20 PM

A photo is already a projected perspective.
Memory build help your understanding of the image, but seems you achieve a better result when using the photo.
So my question is: Is it just for the understanding part? For a creative process? Or for technique?
05-10-2010, 07:28 PM
washka - it's for understanding, because when I paint from memory I basically paint from imagination but with a set goal, thanks for the comment

washka - cheers for the comment :)

Loads of sketches there (i.e understatement of the year ;P) some which are pretty good! :)
It is also very fruitful overall with contrast, so try to push it further going towards absolute black!
07-12-2010, 06:24 PM
all looks good
07-12-2010, 11:41 PM
Thats a massive update :)
You probably should add, "Contains Nudity" to the thread namn, just a tip.

Dope scene is reallife? :) Arms of the queen are big. About the queen:
There is also a trick when you're doing a standing pose, when you project the head center's vertically onto the ground, it's quite always between the feet. Upper part of the girl and lower part doesn't seem to be onto the same perspective.
You're making a good use of your eye, behind the eye is the brain, and it can be used as a tool too. (I remember your memory exercises)
Maybe that sometimes you should try to completly get out of your image, make something else, to get a fresh new view on it 10-15 minutes later when you come back to your work. There you'll usually have a new point of view, and you can see new mistakes that you've missed before.
Keep it up man!
And this one is not fail:
It's fail because you decided it's fail, you can make correction onto an image, there is a lasso tool, there is transform, there is color blending, in worst case there is even fluidity or erase and make over.
On digital painting, in my personal point of view, an image is never fail, it's not a crystal that you can't work on. If you want to start it with a new drawing: do it, but nothing prevent you to copy paste elements/layers on photoshop, and nothing prevent you to scale, rotate, and use all the tools your got on those.
In digital painting, we've got plasticity and we can use it in all possible forms ever! And it's a privilege!
It's good to dump when you think it's a trash, but for this one, it's really sad.
16-01-2011, 02:21 AM
washka - thank you very much for the detailed comment, I will keep these things in mind.
The portrait you quoted was from a 2 hour life drawing session, I just ran out of time on that one.

Lightning on your last selfportrait is really interesting.
"Fly" pop up better with new background, blue tones onto the shoulders trick my eye about the under structure (transparency).

Nice work on this sci-fi guy, volumes are starting to pop out nicely, like the intriguating athmos. Reflexion on the floor is a nice trick.
This square format is hard to work on (composition), I couldn't, I would double the image surface on top of it (with some amazing ceiling). How can you do that?

washka - yeah the composition is pretty bad. tbh I might just blur most of the enviro
thanks for the comment

Like the eyes there :)

I didn't mean it in this way: "bad", I mostfully wanted to explain that it's quite hard to work onto this kind of format. And you managed to get some interesting result on it.
And what I wanted to point out, it's that with the perspective there and the skills I know you've got, if (doubling the image height size) you add/paint some more old church/castle kind of ceiling (you know this kind of lightning you got into those dark old romanesque or gothic architecture, there is always plenty of details up there), you'll increase depth, details and athmos. You could even made a SCI-FI interpretation there, it would fit.
You know just this copy/paste technique (decrasing superimposed triangular shapes) that create a depth illusion.
I think it could improve greatly your image (and its athmos), but it's just a personal opinion.

Looking good :)
But like Hula said, The lips on that last one, aint looking right. It seams they are going out from the face, in and odd way. hard to describe =/

I liked this "wonky" lips, I would have used that to make her look a bit like a tricky monkey/lion, get some "animal" feeling there, it was a goooood mood.
Nice work btw (+ear).
