I'll pop this thread's cherry.
I'm going to be away from my PC for several days, so I need to submit now. I Wish I had those few extra days to add some more detail into the textures.

Voting Time has come!
Here's how it's going to work, initially there will be a public vote to decide the top 5 places.
To qualify for voting you must have at least 50 posts to your name or be a competitor of the challenge you are voting in (must be the same stream too, so a matte painter cant vote in speed modelling for example, unless he has over 50 posts)
Please choose your top 3, your first place gets 3 points, 2nd gets 2, and 3rd gets 1. We will use these final entry threads for public voting also.
Public voting will be open for 1 week.
Then the top 5 will be judged by a panel (to be announced) to decide the final places, this will happen during the second week of the month. winners will be announced when all the judging is final
Ok people, get voting and good luck to everyone!!

My god, really difficult to choose best artworks. But here is my top)
1st place to Fbios, his model is very interesting and made in steam punk style
2nd place to armians. The model is really great, I like the color theme and style. Honestly it was really hard decision. If I be able I'll give 1st place to this work too :D
3d place to Levus. Great design and modeling.

Iv watched these 3dtotal contest for quite some time and always. The voting seems unfair.
It looks to be more of a popularity contest. The post below is one from GA that I pasted here
and changed up the name walrus to someone of similar rank
here on 3d total so the point can be conveyed correctly to everyone :
Right now the best voting system in all forums is Game Artisans. Why there are
many reasons to that to me hidden votes allowed you to vote anyone’s
entry which soothe your eye instead of following other
peoples likes or dislike,
What I means is if I know which persons Freespace-3DT voted, the first thing
strikes to my mind is that Freespace-3DT is a senior Indeed his
taste of choice will be purely professional and hence instead of
what I like the most I will likely to follow Freespace-3DT votes. And if somehow I don’t followed Freespace-3DT vote
my first impression will be
that I will check those entries first which Freespace-3DT voted
then even think of going and checking other entries
thus somehow visible voting to my opinion
is not much a fair game
Thus are more advantages to hidden voting
I know im going to get flamed for this but I know im not alone.

hello. to be honest, most of the authors dont even understand what steampunk is. (so as I). I decided to vote basing on equality of steampunk\quality of modeling.
1) Growl - nice detaling, and the character really looks like steampunk art - he suits in the clothes of the age when that artstyle was developed (so his clothes are modern and stylysh)
2) armians - very good modeling, close to steampunk and fresh idea - the alien creature trying to adopt a new world.
3) Levus - good modeling, close to style, but the textures a bit blurry.

You make a good point Clue, GA seems to have the best voting system for these contests. I like the anonymous system rather than posting who you vote for as it sometimes seems to start a a trend in the following votes

1. armians: Model and texture is really sweet, great work.
2. Growl: Looks very good, but armians texture work was a tad better.
3. Fbios: Nicely done, I especially like the face.
And Levus. High poly model looks amazing, really good. But the texture needs more work.
Ps. there is a lot of good work in this comp, but there are some people that do better than others. Thats why they get so much votes.
So if you don't get any votes it's not because you suck, it's just that there was people that did a better job in the challenge than you.
1. Tarik2d - your character looks a lot like the director from the architecture company i've worked lol
2. armians LOVE IT
3. Growl very real look
those are my votes, i agree with other type of voting, that would be a nice thing to doo, i'm really sure some peoples will get mad for my voting and if i voted other peoples other will get mad and so on, but this is my choice, sorry for the ones i didn't vote, you all did a great job and i wish you good luck

1 - armians : Great design, superb execution, clean construction. Textures could have more dirt/dust/grime.
2 - Growl : Absolutely screams "steampunk" to me. Really clean construction and excellent texturing. Textures could have more depth (better lighting could help). I would also like to see more poses.
3 - Fbios : I really like the clothing design, but not as "steampunk" as the other entries. Poses are very stiff.
Honourable Mentions
Warlock : Great work as always. Really awesome vehicle and technically fantastic work. I would love to see you get into normal maps.
Levus : Really good lowpoly and bake. But the sculpting and textures feel a little flat and "muddy" to me.
Insania : I love the colors and design, but it looks like you rushed the end result. Normal maps need to "pop" more.
Great job everyone!

Hey all! Very upset I didn't get to finish in time, but I'll see you guys at the next challenge ;)
As for the voting, I've been reading and also have thought about the voting system here. I admire the work and beautiful entries you guys finished for this challenge, I'd really like to see some certain people win of course, but I feel that this open voting system is unfair. By not voting, I feel I'm not leaving anyone out that I feel deserved a place. If the voting system were private, I'd leave my opinion then, but until that's changed, I cannot vote. I can only hope by luck now that you guys will win! Especially those of you that pushed yourselves beyond to submit a wonderful piece. Luck to everyone, and hopefully meet you again at the next challenge. :)

it's really hard to make choices, because that challenge is really beautiful, I really spent some time doing my combinations and my ratings ... I found that three quarters of projects are worth! a lot of talent here!
so here are my choices:
1 - Growl (awesome work for me!)
2- Armians (textures & style are so nice!)
3 - Fbios
4 - Insania, Warlock, Levus I like your project too but I had to choose 3 unfortunately.

I agree so much with IntheClue and Longhi there about the public voting system. I'm new to this forum and I'm not one of those popular ones here. I'm reading what others are saying about this popularity voting system being unfair and I have a feeling it seems true. this does seem to be a very unfair voting system. It seems people vote for people they know or friends with.
This should be about voting for an art work that you really like and not voting for something just because that person is your friend like some people are doing I noticed. I'm not saying everyone is doing this but I notice some are this way.
If I have like 10 artists friends here in the forum that can vote and I tell them to vote for me and they did just cause they are my friends. Think about how that would be unfair to you. That's all I gotta say about this.

well there are 2 issues with what you said:
1: people don't look at the votes then make their votes. They look at the art, then make their votes. How can I say this. Well, when you load up the final entry page, the first thing you see is what, the art. So this means, you have an idea of what you like and dislike well before you make it to the voting.
2: Having your friends vote for you isn't helping you any, infact, it's making you worse. The only way to totally stop this friends voting for friends is to close the voting to a panel of judges. That removes the whole point of having a forum challenge, if the forum can't vote in the end.
Most of the time, the people who complain about voting are the people not getting any votes. All I can say to that is, keep practicing, as you get better, the votes will follow.

Just listen to the people were in it just as much as you are :
mastein - IntheClue:
I agree with you in 1 point. The vote could be secret.
But not cuz someone else vote will influence other votes...
In my opinion, people have to "think with their own head".
If someone is really influenced by others vote, well....i´m sorry about then.
DE3MOHD - I agree with you. Voting is not fair and sometimes looking stupid.
Dront - I agree with you InTheClue. Remove the public vote even if it´s just an indication for the judges and change it so that it´s just a unbiased judging panel who decides.
This will also speed up the voting process.
berendey - mastein +1
anima3d - Since theres no other reason that bublic voting came, just to speed things up, i have to agree that changing the current system sounds good and fair enough.
Appr_oved - change the dam system plzz. yea its good for building skill but if voting is involved then have a good system, thats all.
Stoneking - Hey Longhi - After reading your post i felt like you are 100% right,
I've already saw this kind of thing in many forums around,
So my conclusion is, it is dificult to make the voting sistem perfect,
Popularity can even interfere in the non public votes, so it is dificult,
BTW: Many thanks for the kind words master, means a lot

If anything changes, it will be that public voting is gone. Meaning the public will get no say in who did a good job. They will just have to accept the top 3 picks and be happy.

1 - armian, Best overall, very smooth and nice. Good texturing. Thinking a lot of Borderlands when I see it, but its all good :)
2 - levus, Nice style, he had a lot of attitude.
3 - growl, very neat model, almost took the second place, but it would have needed a bit more attitude. It was a nice idea with the gentleman thingy.
Runner up - fbios, good model overall, nice texturing as well.
I was very ambiguous when placing my votes.
Either way, there were all in all a lot of nice models this time around :D
Gratz to all participants

sad i didnt finish this one, great entries, heres my votes:
1 - Levus, even though steam punk is at the bottom of my list for visual beauties this one has made me like it a little bit more! The sculpt is Siiiickkkkkkk.
2- Armians, again another style I wouldnt see myself liking but it happened again ive had my mind changed, this is some SOLID texturing, impressive!
3- Fbios, if her legs were covered up by tight material including her butt this would of been a winner for me, shes awesome, execution and final renders are perfect. I just like my girls covered up and ready for battle lol good job dude.

I'll pass the word along to the top people and see what they say.
If anything changes, it will be that public voting is gone. Meaning the public will get no say in who did a good job. They will just have to accept the top 3 picks and be happy.
It doesn't have to be this strict, it could be an anonymous panel where not only the votes are kept secret, but you don't know the authors, that would make choices 100% based on the art.
My only real gripe is with the speed modelling contests where people submit textured models, it should NOT be allowed. It should focus on the model and have as little post production as possible.

I see absolutely no issue with the current voting system. In fact, I think it is superior to others. It allows us to not only vote, but it also allows us to discuss the artwork and give some final thoughts and comments. The point of these contests (and Threedy in general) is communal learning, not bragging rights. If you can't give comments with your vote, no one is learning anything.
Threedy has always had a "family" kinda feel. It's a very down-to-earth, friendly community. Changing the current voting system with lots of strict rules will harm that image.
EDIT:
that would make choices 100% based on the art.
I disagree. By making the votes secret, people are not longer held responsible for their choice and they can vote however the hell they want. People will vote for themselves, or vote for bad artwork just to be funny, or vote randomly etc.
EDIT2:
It seems people vote for people they know or friends with
Untrue. I'd like to think I'm a fairly well-liked guy around here and I don't have a single vote...heck, I don't even have an honorable mention in anyone's post. And Armians is relatively new and he's tearing up the voting. That's because my entry was pretty weak and his was exceptional. People are voting for him because of great art. And even if some people do vote for friends, secret ballots are not going to change that...it will probably make it worse.

This thread is now closed; This month we will try a new way for picking winners, without public vote - we will judge them across the professional panel made from moderators and members of 3dtotal.
The results will be posted on february 15th.
Thank you!
